the Characteristic of an Architect
House 101
I was born in a lovely family. My mom has a great interest in art. My dad was trained to be a civil engineer since high school, and now he owns an office of general contractor. Apparently, it’s my nature to love architecture.
I can still remember the day I learned how to use ruler from my mom. It’s so exciting since I discover that a tool can help me to draw a line straight. Then, I took out my pencil and crayon and drew my dream house and tried to pretend I was working like my father.
The image of my dad working in front of drawing desk is branded clearly in my mind because he always work with me in his arms. It fully explains why I can understand architectural drawings, such as master plan and sections when I was four. By the way, It’s never boring for a 4-year old boy to stay with his father when he is allowed to play with sand, wood and hammer.

House 101 - the First drawing of a 4-year-old architect
Like an architect, I projected what I have dreamed and what I have seen through the vision of a 4-year old kid, so I drew a pitched roof house with robots. Bathroom, bedroom, fire place with chimney and even robotic arms to deal with trashes were all portrayed scrupulously. Since this time, my dream to become an architect has been sparked.

Motivation
We were taught that “site context” and “concept” are the foundation for an architect to make decisions, and this is why we need architect. Without these foundations, the identity of architecture would be hardly manifested.
A TYPICAL ARCHITECTURE DESIGN APPROACH
In this research/study, I try to link up the design process: Site/Program, Concept, Form Finding and Digital Fabrication. Because I believe by doing this, the gap between a typical architecture design and digital fabrication can be filled up. And we can have a greater view in architecture by using digital tools.

Dongshan Station sits on a polarized environment with rural rice field on the Northeast, but facing elevations of orthogonal street blocks on the Southwest. It becomes a transition between natural opening and man-made scene.
Several records and researches showed that the high frequency rain of Yilan is due to its location, facing the monsoon from the Northeast. In addition, precipitation becomes greater in the afternoon. So, people of Yilan developed their unique living style to get along well with its rainy days.
There are 3 scales of relation between Dongshan and train station. On the Large perspective, station is blended into the Yilan plain. The roof of the station can be observed as landscape when we take a view on the mountain. On the Medium perspective, as we take a closer view, the concrete structure of station begin to dialogue with surrounded building. When it comes to smallest view, we can find out that station structure turns into a shelter for locals, providing an open space on the end of the streets.

Concepts BIG SHELTER To respond Yilan’s high precipitation, offering a big roof for locals can meet their needs of a sheltered space when it rains in the afternoon. Besides, creating a continuous freeform roof would follow the connection to the context like it was, a dialogue with open field and multi-peaked mountain. "A LIFTED STATION" CONCEPT SKTECH

LIFTED STATION
The initial demand of bridge is offering passengers to transfer between platforms. Sitting on the transition between nature and town, a bridge can also be an observatory which gives visitors an opportunity to see a greater views on both town and open field.
To maintain the continuity on ground floor, a lifted station will achieve this goal without interrupting the traffic through the station. Besides, it follows the similar direction of the first concept – Big Roof.

Guiding Design Progress by Accumulated Models
By study a series of physical models, I acquired greater overview than we checked simulated models on screen. Furthermore, once we regard physical models as the only media to present our idea, we are forced to take the simplest, the most decisive approach to construct those imagination into reality. It makes a design process solid. Even the task is about building up a complex freeform, these accumulated model really guide me to reach the final result.

Peak Study
The multi-peaked roof generation is according to the void on 3rd floor plan to portrait a flowing scale variation of emptiness which would bring visitor a gradual changing perception when traveling through station. In order to make it easier to identify roof as a symbol of mountain, four 1/500 models were built for study. The observation can be feedback to adjust algorithm in parametric tools.

In order to avoid unpleasant direct sunlight from the South, shrink the open area as much as possible and even extend an overhang on the edge. Contrarily, diffuse light comes from the North is welcomed, so the openings close to the North is bigger to take the advance of natural light.By responding lighting environment, a gradual change on opening is explored.

Light Receiver
Section
Dongshan Station establishes a three-layered section and features 4 kinds of spaces (concourse, two platforms, and ground floor public space) to meet the demand as a railway station. There space featured different spatial experience by filtering natural light. It’s easy to feel the subtle variation of lights by observation on physical models.
There are 3 layers (roof, concourse, and platform) in front of ground floor. Though there a several voids on roof and concourse, lights will be blocked by platform deck. As a community open space, insufficient lighting on ground floor become a problem. My solution is changing solid pavement on the platform in to translucent one. And surprisingly, the effort is successful. It’s proved when we saw bright dots on the ground floor of the model, -natural light can penetrate though roof and deck to the ground. MASTER PLANNING OF SANYIN METRO
a pure "BOX" "BOX" is the concept for interacting with our city environment. Its simplity, silence and clearity can not only mute the visual noise, but also hightlight the outline of every metro station itself. The simplicity of the box make the metro construction much easier. A station can be decomposed into three layers - structure, skin and roof. /Structure The layer of structure is constructed by modulized steel members. By utilizing the advantage of steel, all the members can be pre-fabricated in nearby factories. /Skin In order to present local feature, cladding the skin layer all over the box can manifest different characteristic of each place. LB01 -A LIFTED GREEN HOUSE
LB01 an Elevated Green House The main concept of agriculture is translated into a green house in LB01. White metal mesh is widely used throughout the station, so the simpilicity, the lightness and the transparency are well-presented. In order to build a place for plants to grow, the natural sunlight and wind become necessary. The void spaces on the metal made green house possible - the sunlight and air can easily penerate the station. Besides, the metal mesh is also a good surface for plants to grow on.

"Tree of Earth" is the concept for LB08, the hightlight station. Due to its history of pottery industry, YinGe has become the one of famous tourist spot in Taipei. Therefore, "tree" and "clay" , which orignates earth become two elements to represent YinGe local feature. Tree structure becomes our first option of structure system. Because of its clear hierarchy, a tree is decomposed into trunk, branch, leaves and tree crown.

LB08 is between YinGe railway station and Museum of New Taipei City, so a passing route is requested by government of New Taipei City. A senario of passing experiences is set to respond the concept of "Green Transportation". The existed landscape of YinGe become a nature advantage. By adding some vertical vegetation along the handrail, travelers whoever enter or leaving LB08 can enjoy this vital green experience.

Renovation of Zhongzheng Military Community Center - Intern works
Summary
an Old Militery Theater
In the 3rd year of my college, I got an intern opportunity to participate a renovation project in Miss Lin’s office. Even though the duration is only about 70 days, as a beginner of historical building, it’s good enough to get a close view on how renovation project works in an architecture studio.
Zhongzheng military activity center were built in 1963. It was built to meet temporary needs for military families as community center after work. So it was designed as a movie theater to play movies for entertainments. After 1990, troops were withdrew from Bade district. The initial living needs for military were on longer existed, and the building condition decay through time. In 2007, Taoyuan city government nominated Zhongzheng military activity center as historical building for preserving its value as a record of Taiwanese military building typology after 1950. Besides, they expect Zhongzheng military activity center can be fixed and reopen to local people.

Public Library
The renovation are taken over by Lin’s team. To meet current needs in local communities, theater is renovated as a public library. Regarding it was a movie theater, part of auditorium are enclosed as a smaller multimedia Room. The stage (movie screen) is transformed into bookshelves and the most of seats which were for audience are now served for readers. By doing this, the memories of theater can be preserved and the function of public library can still be offered. The tectonic of roofing is emphasized. 70-year-old roofing craftsman were invited as a consultant for this project, to make sure the roof are preserved as it was. In order to remind local people their own military history, several learning camp were held in Zhongzheng military activity center to show people how the building was built and inspire children the senses of architecture. The renovation is no longer about fixing and preservation but strengthen the connection between architecture and people.

Modeling My responsibility is to build a model which can present as more detail as possible. The model would be a media to communicate with craftsmen and community for better renovation. At first, I have to build up initial theater model with box office, simulated texture of bricks, tiles and roof. This part is regarded as a foundation of preservation. Then input new function which is brought up by architect into this model. Every proposal are removable but the initial model itself cannot be damaged after replacing newer objects by time to time.

Installation Art Jan-Mar,2013 Lighting Device Design PSSDL (Photonic System Simulation Design Lab) National Taiwan University of Science and Technology
Summary
PSSDL (Photonic System Simulation Design Lab) built a cabin with light collecting bricks all over its roof. This mile stone proof that they can use replace artificial light by using collected nature light indoor. This natural lighting transportation system is matured, but irony, they need a lighting device to emphasis what they accomplished. So PSSDL asked me to design a decorative lamp, a lighting device, can put inside the cabin. Due to its limited space inside the cabin, the volume of this device should be under 30cm*30cm*30cm. However, it must be eye-catching and reminds visitors those skylight outside were all utilized in this ending device.

Light Vase Different from architectural design, this time, the final
product would be filled up with light, so the most of the material are either transparent or translucent. PSSDL offered me a beam splitter cube– a transparent cube which can split a beam of light in two colors- , and a bundle of optical fiber in different radius. The Light Vase origin from beam splitter cube at the bottom as a light source, then splitting blue and yellow light into two bundle of optical fiber. With the flexibility of fiber, it’s easy to weave a turning vase by two colored bundle of fiber. After connecting to light tank, the twisted void can be rendered as a light vase by illuminated pipes.

Youth Commuity
Housing has become a critical problem in Taipei, especially for who cannot afford a proper house young man. In order to solve the problem, Chin-Nian social housing project was funded by Taipei City Government. It is requested to accommodate at least 250 young families. These living units are only for renting. Picture frame is proposed as our concept. Hundreds of new, colorful lifes can be captured by these picture frames. At the same time, the colorful frames emphasize the energy of young people to this newborn social community.

3D Illusion
With in lack out government funding, practically constructing a 3D framing become unavailble. Therefore, the predicament force us to find an alternative - a 3D illusion. By painting a single color into three different brightness, observers from a distance would regard them as a protruding face. The contrasted brightness become a illusion of the bright/dark surfaces.

Why tall?
The appearance of high rise building is to solve the lack of living space in modern city. Now, the height of skyscraper face greater challenges in physical environment, such as greater wind pressure on higher level. It’s well known that the urban heat island (UHI) in inner city is more significant than in seacoast city. Generally, we believe that sea water can cool down the air nearby. Because of the poor air circulation, heat island become much more serious in inner city or basin area. Now, we place a stack-like skyscraper in Taipei basin. And solving urban heat island by strengthened the air circulation because of the feature of high rise building.
Why tree?
Trees play two roles in nature.
CONCEPT DIAGRAM TREE AS A CHIMNEY TO EASE URBAN HEAT ISLAND (UP)
To outside world, trees purify air and provide oxygen for another creature.
UTILIZE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE FORMING OF TREE AS A SKYSCRAPPER STRUCTURE SYSTEM (DOWN)
To inside world, trees are the shelters for small animals. So, “tree” can be a biomorphic form to high rise building. To outside world, lower down the urban heat island. To inside world, become a new type social space.

Respond to Site
Da-an park (well known as the lung of Taipei) is on the west side of the construction site. There is an expressway between the park and the site. We try to extend the green field into the site to make our skyscraper like a real tree planting in the park. We set a sky bridge flying over the expressway. The sky bridge can be a gateway between the park and the skyscraper just like roots connecting a tree to the earth.

Functionality
A public library which provides spacious reading space and book shelves. Library also includes a small exhibition hall, a multi-media center, some offices and cafeteria. All of these massive spaces become like fruits hanging on the tree. The hanging-space-system provides people a new possibility of space experience.Jogging people in the park might wonder the activities taken places in colored massive space in the skyscraper. For the people in the building, the experience is just like reading under a tree shadow.

Form Generation Generating parametric form by using grasshopper as follows: 1. Determining the basic plane. (Define five control points O, A, B, C, D on plane) 2. Offsetting base surface 70 levels.4 meters height for each level. 3. Rotating every plan on axis +Z vector. in sequence with 90 degrees in the end. 4. Using function graphic to control magnification of every plan on axis +Z vector. 5. Lofting contour line on every level in sequence.

Sustainability We regard this high rise building as a “solar chimney of Taipei city. A
solar chimney can provide low pressure zone in building and activate indoor ventilation. In addition, it forms a comfortable reading place inside the building. In order to balance lower pressure inside the tower, urban airflow can run through the openings on building envelope. The gigantic solar chimney can strengthens urban air circulation and reducing urban heat island (USI).Besides, the series of rotated plans along the height of building creates a spiral stair ecosystem. This spiral stair ecosystem can also provide biologic continuity to the site.

Concept Providing a convenient connection between two places is usually considered as a guideline when we talk about bridge design. This time, contrarily, we try to break this idea by illuminating the bridge-crossing process. Adding a series of viewing EVENTS into this bridge-crossing route, just like arranging movie scripts into this route and trying to realize Le Corbusier’s idea - Architectural Promenade -, into bridge design.
CONCEPT DIAGRAMS -CONTINOUS GREEN ROUTE
Curved Route It would be interesting if a bridge plays as a new role, a freeform curve, on the grid system of Taipei city. Different from orthogonal traffic system on the ground surface, PROMENADE BRIDGE provides a new route, which guides pedestrian to participate diverse viewing events.
CONCEPT DIAGRAM -WALKING UNDER THE TREES
A curved route offering exciting city-crossing experience to people. The route starts from Da-an district office and lands on the green field of Daan park, keeping pedestrian to continue his/her journey. In drivers’ point of view, PROMENADE BRIDGE filters skylight and renders into leafyshade lighting texture. It’s just like walking under a tree.
CONCEPT DIAGRAMS -COURVED ROUTE
Structure System BOX The BOX is the basic cell for constructing this freeform curved bridge. Despite the fact of freeform curve, all the framing of BOX are all unified. By utilizing parametric design tools, we can mass customizes different length of components in different BOXes.
A BOX UNIT
BOXES Linking BOX units by high strength bolt accomplishes the freeform route in space. The dead load is sustained by 70 cm-depth beam under BOXES. Loading can be deliver to ground floor by the beam. CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

Roofing
the Harp
Promenade Bridge is located between urban and park. It represents a transition between artificial scene and nature. So, we try several way to portrait this walking sequence by adding pattern on the roof. The roofing of BOX try to replicate a leafyshade image. It extends the walking experience down the trees. Let the light falling through the ceiling can be filtered into some meaningful image, an image that reminds people of nature.
As an ethereal light curve floating above the streets of Taipei, we decided not to use columns to buttress Promenade bridge. To emphasis its lightness, we choose a harp tensile system to hang the bridge. The main post of the harp can still play as an attraction in park, For the rest of the part, extending beams against the surrounding buildings can hold the rest of dead load of the the bridge.
