Vanities and basins play a huge part in determining the overall style of your bathroom.

While the all-in-one basin and vanity unit remains an ever popular and extremely versatile option, the vessel basin is experiencing a strong resurgence. It enables both design flexibility with your bench-top surface, and twin bowl options for different bathroom users. Toilet Suites are rapidly moving towards two main styles; back-to-wall suites tend to be chosen by clients wanting a more classical appearance without the cleaning complexity involved with close-coupled units. Wall-hung systems are the preferred option for new builds due to their smaller footprint and ease of cleaning.

It may be hard to imagine using anything but vinyl, since it’s almost the only material that doesn’t mold up. However vinyl shower curtains can release more than 100 different toxic chemicals into the air. Consider trading your toxic bleach cleaning products for vinegar also. Finally for the serious greenies: This living moss bath mat will absorb water and dry your feet.

TAPWARE UNPLUGGED WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR? To understand what you pay for in a tap, it is useful to note that prices can vary dramatically. Some can be priced over $1000 and some can be as low as $45!

There is a certain amount of truth in “you get what you pay for”.

When you invest in a high quality piece of tapware you will enjoy a product that is made of quality brass, has a high grade cartridge, quality design and sound packaging. You will be provided with a clear installation guide, often with additional fittings, warranty and support.

In most cases cheaper nondescript products come with cheaper fittings, less brass and less back up. Often the plumber will take longer to install the product and may need extra parts.

The tapware needs to reflect how grand or modest the home is.

The key is to not overcapitalise on tapware in a modest bathroom but also not to completely undervalue your bathroom with tapware that is too cheap or basic - ideally purchasing somewhere in the middle price range is a wise investment, costing you less in the long run.

UNDERSTANDING THE PRESSURE Shower tapware is the single most important decision when selecting fittings for your bathroom. Why? Get this wrong and every day you will not only feel disappointed in your decision but you’ll start or end your day with frustration!

Shower tapware requires planning and a good understanding of the household’s needs before selection can take place; for example a family bathroom shower needs to have an element of water efficiency for high use and also deliver a good shower in a short time frame. Often a misty typed shower can give the appearance that you will save more litres per minute BUT how long do you need to be in the shower to actually rinse your hair out? Another example could be that your water pressure is less than desired and the pressure will reduce even more with a mains pressure mixer. FUTURE PROOF SHOWERS PLANNING AND INSTALLATION - a good opportunity to future proof.

When you’re at the planning stage of the bathroom, consider all options for the shower area and acquire the services of a reputable installer.

IMPORTANT - the shower needs to be water tight against the walls. All shower options available in New Zealand will stand the test of time, providing they are installed correctly and offer a NZ safety standard for the glass.

Planning is imperative before you purchase or start selecting materials.

It gets increasingly expensive to make changes, as each stage is completed.

TIP - put extra bracing in the walls if you think you may want to add a grab rail, shelf or seat later on. A glass door or screen requires good bracing.

Stand in the space to mark out where you want the shower nozzle to come from and a comfortable height for the mixer. You may want a spacious shower but will you be warm with all that airflow around you?

Planning the outflow of water is also as important as the inflow of water. For example, the shower might deliver 38 litres of water a minute because you have two monsoon shower heads going at once. However your waste may only be able to remove a portion of that per minute.
