An Interview

Interview with Mr Thyagu Valliappa, Executive Director –Sona Valliappa Textiles Pvt. Ltd. We have patented “silk stretch” through National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) and have a joint venture with Central Silk Board, Bangalore, for establishing silk stretch with filature, dupion and spun silk yarns for the first time in India. We created this on a scientific formula against all odds.

MICROBIOZ INDIA: As a fourth generation entrepreneur in your family business how do you see the past helping you at present? Thyagu Valliappa: Throughout its rich history, SONA VALLIAPPA GROUP has always been the pioneer of all kinds of businesses and it has never stopped changing and innovating in all of its endeavors. Every futuristic idea formulated by the visionary founder Sri Karumuthu Thiagarajar Chettiar has turned into business success. The group is also known for taking the lead in the emergence of IT exports in India in the 1980s by housing companies like Texas Instruments in its Sona Towers at Millers Road, Bangalore.

17

MICROBIOZ INDIA: Could you tell us briefly about how your group evolved over the years?

MICROBIOZ INDIA: Has the group changed its focus in its activity to work in new-age industry?

Thyagu Valliappa: Sri Karumuthu Thiagarajar Chettiar started the business in a small way in 1920. With hard work, dedication and commitment he could scale up operations assuring quality products and building relationships with each level in trade. Not surprising that he has been the uncrowned king of the textile industry and in 1972 he was the largest spinner of textile yarn in the world. Over the years, his son-in-law Sri Chockalingam Chettiar established a large base of textile mills in Salem and with his son Sri. C. Valliappa established mills all over Karnataka. The textile mills thereafter grew rapidly under the care of the illustrious sons of C. Valliappa.

Thyagu Valliappa: As a group we started our activities in the field of education, construction, etc that helped us in the textiles operations. At the core was our main interest-TEXTILES. We have been seeing the trends and cycles of business in this industry for almost 100 years. Today Sona Valliappa Group is an organization renowned for original research in textiles and using technology to make variety of fabrics for various end use.

An Interview We have patented “silk stretch through National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) and have a joint venture with Central Silk Board, Bangalore, for establishing silk stretch with filature, dupion and spun silk yarns for the first time in India. We created this on a scientific formula against all odds. Various research organizations work with us in creating unique garment solutions as required by us. In recent days Sona Valliappa Group has integrated textile manufacturing from yarn to garment making. The special innovation is either fashionable or cost effective products. Today our focus is to create value added products for customers for each of its verticals be it yarn, fabric, garment or home textiles. MICROBIOZ INDIA: At the recent India Lab Expo in Hyderabad September 2017, you were displaying special fabric (garments) for Uniforms/Lab coats /Aprons. That was something different and new for the market. Please tell us more on these products. Thyagu Valliappa: As technology evolves, research also gets a boost and we see a synergy in our efforts to provide value to our customers by using fast paced research, high technology and an adopting/accepting market for the new types of fabrics with enhanced benefits on wear and use of our products. For example we have water repellent, fire retardant, blood resistant, wrinkle free, anti-microbial, stain resistant, anti-fungal, odour resistant, mosquito repellent, oil repellent, crease recovery, anti-fade, anti-sting, ( few more soon) variety of garments that can be adopted as aprons/lab coats/ dresses etc. All the finished products will be sold under the brand SONA MILLER

MICROBIOZ INDIA: That list is quite long and impressive. How do you propose reaching out to the market which seems to be in various industry segments? Thyagu Valliappa: Our Company believes in giving customers a product which they will buy and use it immediately. We trust we have been able to do a bit of analyzing, studying the needs of the consumer and keeping in mind the safety, health and other aspects of the customer. We assure comfort of wear in our garments, uniformity, guarantee of quality, healthy partnership building with trade and consumers, standard pricing, ease of buying using technology and apps, delivery tracker, interest free emi option, door to door delivery. For the key industry segments we will want to work with as many, but to start with they will be the pharma/health sector including labs/clinics/R&D centers/ manufacturing /production/hospitals/ testing centers, hospitality industry, chemical industry, manpower and security providers. Laboratory Business Edinburgh, U.K.-based NuCana, meanwhile, had been seeking a top $115 million IPO, but got a little less at $100 million. The cash boost should still be enough to help fund late-phase trials of NuCana’s reformulated cancer candidates, including a version of Eli Lilly’s Gemzar it hopes will supplant the veteran chemotherapy in some indications. The biotech has built its pipeline upon the same phosphoramidate chemistry approach that underpins Gilead’s hepatitis C blockbuster Sovaldi.

Those trials found 90% of patients either maintained or improved their visual acuity in the year after receiving the gene therapy. The biotech was originally spun out of the University of Oxford in 2014, starting life with a £12 million raise from Syncona. It pulled in a further £5 million when it named former Johnson & Johnson VP David Fellows as CEO early in 2015, with a $35 million series B round following later that year. NuCana has used the approach to add a phosphate group protected by groupings of aryl, ester and amino acids to existing drugs. In doing so, NuCana thinks it has created drugs free from the membrane transport, activation and breakdown issues that render cancers resistant to the products they are based on. The company was down to the last $16 million of its $57 million series B by the end of June, meaning this IPO was a key financial driver for its future, as it eyes later stage tests across a broad range of tumors. And finally Nightstar, which had filed for an $86 million IPO and managed $75 million, will equip the biotech to complete a phase 3 trial of its choroideremia gene therapy and advance two other eye disease candidates through early-stage clinical studies. London-based Nightstar, also known as NightstaRx, is set to move the choroideremia asset into phase 3 in the first half of next year. The therapy, NSR-REP1, is advancing into the 140-patient trial on the strength of data on 32 subjects treated in investigator-sponsored studies.

Thiel backs Peptilogics to move antibiotic toward IND Peter Thiel has invested in Peptilogics.

Peptilogics is built on a platform it dubbed eCAP (engineered cationic antibiotic peptide). Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, including Peptilogics cofounder Jonathan Steckbeck, Ph.D., have worked on eCAPs for years, publishing their results in a series of papers that suggest the peptides kill bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Sartorius presents a new system for laboratories needing low volumes of ultrapure water With ariumÂŽ mini, the laboratory and pharmaceutical equipment supplier Sartorius offers an especially compact ultrapure water system. This newly developed system delivers a flow rate of one liter per minute and is specially designed for ultrapure water requirements of less than 10 liters per day. This space-saving unit with a width of only 28 centimeters (11 inches) easily integrates into nearly any lab environment. Feed water needed to produce ultrapure water is supplied by the 5liter bag integrated on the side of the system. Originally developed for the pharmaceutical industry, this bag is optimal for storing purified water. The closed bagtank system prevents secondary contamination while ensuring consistent long-term water quality. Uncomplicated exchange of the bag also facilitates upkeep of the system and considerably reduces maintenance time compared with conventional tank systems.

The bagtank does not require any hazardous cleaning chemicals, further increasing user safety as a result.

Besides its unique bagtank technology, the system is equipped with a high-resolution, touchactivated color display. Easy-tounderstand icons guide the user intuitively through the menu. The Favorites function automatically stores the volume of ultrapure water last dispensed. This prevents errors during repeated dispensing of identical volumes, helping to increase the reliability and efficiency of lab work procedures. Users can choose between two model versions to suit their individual requirements: The standard version of ariumÂŽ mini is independent of a permanently installed water tap. Water is supplied to this system via the integrated bag, which is filled by a built-in pump. In the process, pretreated water is pumped into the bag automatically and is thus used as feed water for the production of ultrapure water.
