–Photos by Jennifer Peacock American Idol semifinalist Gianna Isabella is interviewed by Jackson Memorial High School Class of 2018 advisor Michele McCann during a pep rally in Gianna’s honor February 9 (top). Above right, Chris Petrone, Gianna Isabella, and Brenda K. Starr talk to reporters afterward. Gianna’s larger-than-life likeness was seen all around the JMHS auditorium at the pep rally. By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – In some ways she’s a perfectly average teenage girl from the burbs: she has a crush on Keith Urban, she argues with her mother about what she should
wear, she laughs at her own corny jokes, and she poses for photos with her friends. But, Gianna Petrone has sang for Keith Urban, taken a selfie with Justin Bieber while roaming around Hollywood, has

Jackson Schools To Join Sustainable Jersey
By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – The district is already doing things to be green, so why not get the recognition and grants? So said Edward Ostroff, the Jackson School District director of building and grounds, when he spoke to the Board of Education about joining Sustainable Jersey for Schools. The school certification program, launched in 2014, is a “nonprofit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs.” Individual schools or whole districts may enter the certification program, Ostroff said. The Board of Education adopted its resolution of participation at its regular February 16 meeting. Each building principal then may register his or her school with the group and form a mandatory “green team,” the guiding group that will coordinate activities to achieve certification. The schools receive 5-40 points for each sustainable practice it adopts from a list of possible activities. For example, forming the mandatory green team earns a school 10 points. Performing an energy audit may earn the school 5-20 points. Implementing “Education for Sustainability K-3” can earn a school up to 40 points. Schools can achieve two certification levels right now. A bronze certification means the school has completed two out of 11 priority actions—community education and outreach; school wellness council; indoor air quality review; energy audit; building efficiency measures; professional development for sustainability; education for sustainability;
