SWEET AND FUNNY: Rotary Club Fundraiser A Big Draw

By Judy Smestad-Nunn BRICK – What could be better than chocolate and laughter?

That is the winning combination used by the Brick Morning Rotary Club for its annual fundraiser, A Comedy Night and Chocolate Tasting, held at the VFW Post 373.

Local vendors donated chocolate items such as candy, cake, and cupcakes while comedians Richie Byrne and Joe Fernandes provided the fun and laughter to over 315 attendees, who each paid $20 for tickets.

Other prepared finger foods were also donated, and there was a gift basket raffle and a 50/50 drawing.

According to Morning Rotary Club President Howard Schwartz, the event grows every year. In the past, the chocolate tasting featured a puppeteer as entertainment but now they hire the comedians through Uncle Vinnie’s Comedy Club in Point Pleasant Beach, which has proven to be very popular.

Each year, the Brick Morning Rotary Club funds four, $1,000 scholarships to a high school

student from Brick High School, Brick Memorial, Brick Vocational Technical School and MATES. “Sometimes we follow some of the deserving high school students who go to college and they could continue to get scholarships,” Schwartz explained.

One of those students, Kirstin Smith, 20, attends the nursing program at Ocean County College and was helping with the gift auction at the event.

“Actually, I’m floating around and helping where I’m needed,” she said. “I love the Rotary because it has become a very big part of my life; they have been helping me and I got another $1,000 for college,” said Smith, who is a junior member of the Morning Rotary Club.

Schwartz said that the Rotary organization is the largest service club/organization in the world and it is the only club with a seat on the United Nations.

Each year the local chapters make a donation to Rotary International who invests the money, and within three years, triple the amount comes back to the local chapter as a district grant, Schwartz said.

This year the grant money was used to throw a Christmas party for Providence House, a non-profit organization whose mission is to

transition homeless women back into society.

“We give away everything, we go down to a zero balance,” Schwartz said. “We’re not in it for a profit.”

The Brick Morning Rotary Club runs two food drives annually around Thanksgiving and Easter.

“It’s amazing what people give. We give most of the food to the Visitation Church food pantry, and we also give to their pet food bank,” Schwartz said.

There are two Rotary Club chapters in Brick, The Rotary Club of Brick Township and The Brick Morning Rotary Club, comprised of local business owners and others who work in Brick and surrounding towns. The only difference between the two clubs is the time they meet, Schwartz said.

The Brick Morning Rotary Club has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local Brick non-profit groups and to Rotary International since 1994.

Schwartz said the local chapter is always looking for new members. The club has a weekly breakfast meeting at the Brick Diner, 906 Route 70 on Wednesday from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m.. For more information about Rotary, call Gene-Ann Pesano at 732-239-6928.

Howe, a pro-suffragist, wrote her Anti-Suffrage monologue in 1912 – eight years before women won the right to vote.

Her fictional speaker is a charming, guileless enthusiast who believes that her efforts as a “womanly woman” will keep the home intact and save the nation from anarchy.

The program will celebrate Women’s History Month with crafts, games, comics and will spotlight the heroic character that has been a source of inspiration for young people for decades.

POLAR BEAR PLUNGE

–Photos by Daniel Nee SEASIDE HEIGHTS – An estimated 6,000 plungers – and 25,000 onlookers – came out for the annual Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights, raising more than $1.6 million for the cause. Organizers said it was the most successful plunge yet, and with air temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees for the day, it was the water temperature that defined the winter event, with the average February sea temperature at 40.8°F. The tremendous crowd took the plunge in their summer bathing suits, but also creative costumes, before heading back onto the boardwalk to enjoy the day. Seaside Heights businesses, anticipating the annual crowds, open for the day as one of the first major events of the year.

Editorial Celebrate New Jersey’s History February is honored as Black History Month, and March for Women’s History Month.

Our wonderful local community groups, schools and libraries have set up a great variety of events geared around the history of both these groups, respective to the months.

If you haven’t checked those events out, there is still time to do so.

But also take a moment and learn about the current and past individuals right from our communities who are a part of that rich, diverse history. The libraries and historical societies in our neighborhoods can help you learn more about the men and women who make up our towns’ past, and who deserve recognition for their efforts.

Here are just two stories: The first black fire chief in Ocean County was Garland Griffin, who served as chief of Manitou Park Fire and Rescue Squad from 1959 to 1976. According to the fire company’s history, the plans to have a firehouse on 3rd Avenue and 4th Street in Manitou Park came shortly after its founding on paper in 1959. By 1960, Manitou, with an all black membership of 32, went house to house in a fund drive to purchase block to lay the foundation. Building materials and the work of its members came together to build the firehouse, and over the next two years the squad compiled its first firefighting equipment and vehicles.

According to the squad history: at first, certain fire companies in the area and township officials did not want to recognize the fire company, and gradually the squad volunteers became frustrated and began to quit.

Seven firefighters remained in 1967, when the suggestion came that Manitou should disband and sell the firehouse to the township to store road department equipment. But Chief Griffin instead launched a recruitment campaign that paid no mind to the racial divide. “A man doesn’t care what color a fireman is when his house is burning” was the slogan Griffin used to recruit new members. He was right; and membership grew.

For Women’s History Month, Ocean County has a proud distinction. In 1915, the state had a referendum question on the ballot, the first vote on womens’ suffrage, asking voters if women should have the right to vote in New Jersey.

Every single county in New Jersey voted no – except Ocean County, where more voters said yes. Obviously, the vote failed that day. But, five years later an amendment to the U.S. Constitution was adopted by New Jersey and the other states that would give women the right to vote in the United States.

Letters To The Editor Grave Concerns Over Area Pipeline For the past year, hundreds of citizens from Bordentown to Upper Freehold have spent countless hours and sleepless nights organizing, attending town meetings, writing letters to the NJ BPU, FERC, and the local and Federal legislative delegates that serve this portion of New Jersey.

Why? Because of the very grave concerns that NJNG’s so-called “Southern Reliability Link” (SRL) has raised, its route to course over twolane county roads within 100 feet of residents’ front doors, churches, schools, town halls and emergency response garages, past historic areas dating to the Revolutionary period, past three cemeteries, in township roadways that traverse in front of NJ Preserved Farmlands where U-pick operations are located, and last but not least, invades a section of the NJ Pinelands that is overlain by the Joint Base – McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Additionally, there are over 15 crossings of streams, most of which are tributaries of the Crosswicks Creek which drains to the Delaware River, and potential impacts to mature trees and threatened and endangered species of turtle and fowl.

This gas transmission pipeline would have its terminus in Manchester in Ocean County. Its stated purpose as presented in the petition before the NJ BPU was to enhance resiliency, and reliability of the gas supply should there be another event

such as superstorm Sandy, or disruption in the current Texas Eastern supply system.

Manchester, Lakehurst Borough, and Plumsted have all been curiously silent during this whole time period and I have to wonder if anyone in Ocean County understands the concerns that we in western Monmouth and Burlington County have regarding this unnecessary infrastructure.

As a former 20 year resident of Ocean County, I understand the public relations campaign that NJNG puts out for public consumption.

But I am not so naïve as to think that NJNG just wants to enhance reliability of the gas supply. They really want to enhance the reliability of their income stream through system growth and by placing this infrastructure cost on its ratepayers – and make us Burlington and western Monmouth County residents suffer the consequences should anything go wrong either before, during, or after its construction.

Will you join us by raising your voices loudly against the NJ BPU’s recent approval of this project? This is not a “done deal.” There are permits required and there is also an interstate pipeline extension and new compressor station (also problematic), to be operated by Williams/ Transco, which are needed to service the SRL in order for anything to become viable. It should also be noted that this is tied to PennEast’s project which is being challenged by 70 municipalities along its route all the way to Hopewell

Bombs of Hate

Imagine that as you sleepily go out to retrieve your morning newspaper you find a small bag on your lawn. Curious, you pick it up and find that it is a weighted bag with a leaflet. “Harmless trash,” you may think. Trash it is, but harmless it is not. It is a small “bomb of hate” meant to frighten you with its message against minorities.

More of these hate notes are now appearing in Monmouth County and throughout the state. The perpetrators seek to frighten their targets and to recruit more members for their groups.

We on the Monmouth County Human Relations Commission deplore this hate literat u re and the spreading of its vile message. Even though it may not be illegal, it can be dangerous in its purpose of inciting crimes against minority citizens and immigrants.

Silence encourages the tormentors. If you are a recipient, report the incident to your local police department. A littering complaint is also a possibility. If you see someone dropping these bags or in a similar activity, try to get a license number or as much description as possible of the car and occupants.

Our goal is to alleviate the current tensions and conflicts in our communities.

Hate groups are attempting to inf lame relations with racial minorities, religious minorities, immigrants and between the police and the community.

Meat Industry ‑ 9, Consumers ‑ 0 The “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” released recently by U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services mark the ninth time in a row that the meat industry has successfully suppressed scientific findings recommending reduced meat consumption. The reduction was recommended by the government-appointed Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee in a 571-page report based on review of thousands of studies.

Reduced meat consumption was first recommended in 1977 by the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs in “Dietary Goals for the United States,” a precursor to the Dietary Guidelines.

The meat industry forced the Committee to destroy all copies of the report and to remove the offending recommendation from a new edition.

That wanton government sell-out to the meat industry has replayed itself with every new edition of the Dietary Guidelines since then.

“Dietary Guidelines for Americans” shape school lunches and other government food support programs and underlie public health campaigns to lower rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Fortunately, American consumers are not easily duped. Sales of plant-based meats, cheeses, milks and ice creams have skyrocketed, and every grocery store provides seemingly countless choices of fruits and vegetables.

Mayor John Ducey BRICK – At the most recent Township Council meeting, the council and I had the privilege of presenting representatives of several community service organizations with donations through our Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG). This program, which is funded by the United States Department of Housing Development, gives us the opportunity to help these organizations in their missions to improve the quality of life of the

citizens they serve.

The CDBG program has been in existence since 1974 when it was enacted

by President Gerald Ford.

It is one of the longest running programs of the Department of Housing Development and, according to the HUD website, “provides com munities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs.” Ever y year, the Township of Brick receives funds through the CDBG program and we distribute them to local service organizations that have applied to the Township for funding. This year, we distrib-

uted a total of $43,000 to service organizations.

This year’s CDBG funding recipients are Community Services Inc., Meals o n W h e el s ($10 , 0 0 0), Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanit y ($9,250), Ocea n Cou nt y Hu nge r Relief ($4,000), Dottie’s House ($3,500), Providence House Domestic Violence Services ($3,500), I n t e r f a it h Ho s p it a l it y Network of Ocean County ($3,000), Jersey Shore Council of the Boy Scouts of A m e r i c a ($2 , 0 0 0), The ARC, Ocean County Chapter ($1,500), Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey ($1,500), Ocean’s

Harbor House ($1,500), Church of the Visitation ($1,250), Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ocean Count y ($1,000) and STEPS - Solutions to End Poverty Soon - ($1,000).

I cannot overstate the value and importance of these organizations. They all provide ser vices to people in need that they would not otherwise be able to receive. These organizations serve people of all ages, genders and races. They serve the most vulnerable members of our society. The council and I view the opportunity to support these organizations through the CDBG

program as an absolute privilege.

One of the things that all of these organizations have in common is that they rely heavily on volunteers and the generosity of donors to succeed in their work. I encourage anyone who is interested in giving back to the community and making a positive difference in people’s lives, to learn more about these organizations and contact them to see how you can help.

There are many things that can be done to help. You could make a monetary donation, offer to volunteer some time, hold a food drive or a school supply

d r ive. T here a re ma ny ways to give back and every effort is appreciated.

I would like to commend the work of the township’s Planner, Michael Fowler, who ser ved a s t he co ordinator of our CDBG program this year. In the past, the township utilized the services of an outside f ir m to ad minister ou r CDBG program at a substantial cost. This year, Fowler administered the program in-house. It is another example of this administration working to be more efficient by using our existing resources to facilitate state and federal programs.

NEW JERSEY – Congressman Tom MacArthur and Congressman Donald Norcross reacted to the President’s base realignment and closure (BRAC) request: “It is irresponsible to consider a BRAC without knowing all of the facts,” said Congressman Tom

MacArthur. “The 2015 Defense Bill required the president to give Congress an estimate of current excess infrastructure and he has not done this. Instead, the president continues to be hell-bent on shuttering military bases without updating a now ten year-old study.

Base closures result in huge upfront costs, destroy local communities and diminish our ability to project strength abroad at a critical time in our nation’s history.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I fought hard for Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehu rst and successf ully added amendments in our Nation’s defense bill to prohibit a BRAC and protect the KC-10 refueling tanker from an early retirement.

We cannot put the burden of another BRAC on taxpayers, while simultaneously compromising our nation’s military readiness.”

“We can’t risk compromis-

ing our nation’s security and fix our economic problems by considering more military base closures. While we recognize the need to st reamline our defense budget and reduce excess cost, I cannot and will not support a process that has historically done little to save the Department of Defense money and instead devastated local economies and left a trail of abandoned military facilities requiring extensive environmental

cleanup,” said Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01).

“As the largest employer in Southern New Jersey, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst remains a critical part of our region’s economy and national defense. That’s why I’ve taken meaningful actions in Congress to protect the future of the Joint Base, the brave military men and women who serve there, and their families.”

man Norcross during the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to ensure South Jersey’s Joint Base McGuire-Dix-McGuire was protected from a future BR AC and the early retirement of the KC10 tanker. The Burlington County Times Editorial Board has said the partnership between “MacArthur and Norcross [is] a prime example of how things get done when legislators work together.”

Senators Ask For Funding For Water Infrastructure Projects NEW JERSEY – U.S. Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-N.J.) and Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. (N.J.-09) outlined legislation they w ill i nt roduce i n bot h Houses of Cong ress to address New Jersey’s and the nation’s aging water infrastructure, while creating jobs and economic opportunity.

“Flint has taught us all

that ignoring our aging water infrastructure has dire consequences,” said Sen. Menendez. “We’ve under-invested in our inf r a st r uct u re, cer t ai n ly we’ve underinvested in water systems, and now we’re paying the price.

These systems are old and badly degraded. Many of them are waiting to fail, and they need to be fixed.

We can’t sit back, do noth-

ing and fail to address the public health dangers of an aging infrastructure.”

“The fact that we are jeopardizing the health of our children and families in communities like Flint due to lack of adequate investment in our nation’s cr umbling water inf rastructure is simply reprehensible,” said Sen. Booker. “This legislation is one step to help finance crit-

ical water infrastructure upgrades by facilitating private investment in projects that will create jobs, spur economic growth and most importantly protect the health and safety of our communities.”

Rotary Club Donates Toward Superstorm Sandy Relief

BRICK – Members of the Rotary Club of Brick Township presented a check for $3,000 for the purchase of tools to restock the Visitation Relief Center (VRC) Tool Lending Library. This is the fourth time since Superstorm Sandy that the club has made a donation to help those affected by the disaster.

Through the District Grant program, Rotary District 7500 and the Rotary Club of Brick Township have partnered to raise and donate over $33,000 to the Visitation Relief Center.

The monies have been used to fund the Tool Lending Library, purchase an ATV and to support other VRC efforts.

VRC is a “one-stop” recovery and relief

center for individuals and families affected

Free Shuttle Service Between Medical Centers

LAKEWOOD – Local residents now have access to a new shuttle that will transport patients, visitors and guests back and forth from Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, to Long Brach’s Monmouth Medical Center, thanks to a partnership between Bikur Cholim and the two health care facilities.

Open free of charge to those in the community, the shuttle provides easy access for those in need of a ride to get to either campus or to travel between campuses. Bikur Cholim, which translates to “visiting the sick” in Hebrew, will provide the vehicle service to operate the van.

“At Barnabas Health, we are committed to building healthier communities,” said Frank J. Vozos, president and chief executive officer, Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. “This shuttle will do more than keep us present in local neighborhoods – it will give patients an opportunity to access the care and support they need at either location, as well as make commutes for visitors and guests much easier.”

Free US Citizenship Prep Classes For Adults

LAKEWOOD – Ocean County Library’s Lakewood branch, 301 Lexington Avenue, will host a free, seven session class to prepare people who want to take the test for US citizenship.

The class is appropriate for adults 18 years and older who have lawful and continuous permanent residency in the United States for a minimum of five years. Those attending should have been physically present in the United States for 30 months, with at least three months living in the same state or district.

The class will instruct the students on all topics covered by the test for US citizenship, including civics and American history, and offer practice exercises on English reading and

written vocabulary.

The test itself will not be administered as part of the class. The test for US citizenship is only administered by US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The class will be held on Wednesdays: March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, April 6 and 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the branch.

Registration is required because of the limited class size.

Library To Examine Human Trafficking

OCEAN COUNTY – Human trafficking generates $35 billion annually worldwide and ranks as the second largest criminal activity, tied with arms dealing, according to the agency Prevent Child Abuse New Jersey.

Ocean County Library branches will host the program “Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking and Prevention in New Jersey,” to examine the issue.

The program will provide an overview of human trafficking with an emphasis on the commercial sexual exploitation of children. It will include information about the scope of commercial sexual exploitation, risk factors for exploitation, indicators for identifying victims, state and national resources and prevention strategies.

The program will be presented by Prevent Child Abuse of New Jersey, the programs will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the following library locations: at Toms River on March 14, Jackson on March 22 and Lakewood on April 11.

These programs are funded through a community collaboration of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Ocean County Youth Service Commission, the Ocean County Health Department, the Ocean County Superior Court Juvenile Probation Division, the Ocean County Library, the Municipal Alliance Project and the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Free Professional Development hours are offered and beverages are available.

According to the NJ Human Trafficking Task Force, nearly half of human trafficking involves prostitution. Other trafficking offenses include domestic servitude.

It is estimated between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked into the United States each year and 50 percent of them are children.Approximately 800,000 people are trafficked worldwide each year.

LAKEWOOD – BlueClaws games will return to the Shore Sports Network again in 2016, according to the club and Townsquare Media. Property Tax Rebate Program Is Now Live

POINT BORO – By using a dedicated “rewards” card while dining or shopping at participating local businesses, a deduction on residents’ property taxes will be applied based on how much you spend and the participating business’s discounted amount.

Not a property owner? Don’t live in the Borough of Point Pleasant? No problem.

While only local businesses can be a part of the program, there are no such requirements for shoppers. Renters and anyone living in the surrounding area that frequent Point Pleasant merchants can have a card, and instead of a deduction on property taxes, a rebate check will be mailed at the end of the year.

The borough will be collaborating with FinCredit Inc., a third-party program administrator, and will be able to offer this program at virtually no cost to its taxpayers. Program fees will be paid for by the participating businesses, not the borough, and are expected to be just a few cents per dollar.

FinCredit, Inc. will provide all required software and hardware, website and enrollment information, set up and support for merchants, handle transaction processing and provide customer service.

“We congratulate Mayor Sabosik and the entire borough council for their “thinkout-of-the-box” approach to economic development. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to assist the Borough of Point Pleasant with the launching and

the ongoing administration of their Point Boro Bucks Property Tax Reward program,” said Carmine De Falco, president and CEO of FinCredit Inc. According to Mayor Robert A. Sabosik, “The program will promote local shopping while allowing card holders the opportunity to reduce their property tax bill. Shoppers will earn property tax credits every time they provide a Point Boro Bucks Card at the time of purchase at a participating merchant. Those credits will be applied to their property tax bill, or in the case of a renter or out of towner, a rebate check would be issued. Further, you are not limited to only one card per household. Mom, dad and the kids can each have a card that is linked up to your block and lot.”

Mayor Sabosik continued that “The borough council and I want to strengthen our business district. We want to keep money local. We want to help our taxpayers. With this program, we are achieving all of those goals. As I stated when this program was introduced, we are always looking at ways to save taxpayers money and this is certainly a win, not only for the taxpayers, but for the business community as well.”

Council President Joe Furmato said, “We would be remiss if we did not thank the four original sponsors of our Point Boro Bucks program. Because of them, all the cards that were ordered are free to whomever wants them. Investor’s Bank, Clark’s Landing, Manasquan Bank and

Travelsmiths each chipped in and sponsored the program, providing 10,000 cards without using tax dollars.”

Council President Furmato further went on to explain that “This cooperation was possible because of the increased communication between Borough Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. What you have here is a borough government that is actively helping and promoting the local economy. This is going to make the Borough of Point Pleasant an attraction for businesses to want to set up shop here.”

Chamber of Commerce President Jim VanNostrand stated that the cooperation between the business community and Borough Hall recently has been very good and this program is proof of that.

“When you have a local government that is actively supporting local businesses, everyone wins. This is the type of environment where you want to live, shop and run a business.”

Five Medical Factors That Could Lead To Hearing Loss

While hearing loss is most commonly caused by prolonged exposure to loud noises – also referred to as sensorineural hearing loss – a number of medical conditions can lead to hearing impairment as well. Fortunately, some of these medical conditions are reversible, allowing hearing to become fully restored.

Current research is finding strong associations between hearing loss and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, smoking, obesity and dementia. But many lesser-known conditions can impact your hearing health in potentially serious ways. Here are a few of them: 1. Blood Conditions: Poor blood flow is typically the result of circulatory system troubles and can restrict the flow of oxygen to the inner ear. Conditions affecting blood flow include sickle-cell anemia, diabetes and heart conditions. Things like high blood pressure, hypercoagulability and polycythemia can also cause blood related hearing loss.

2. Infections: Meningitis, a bacterial or fungal infection of the brain and spinal cord, can cause sudden hearing loss. Hearing loss is also a side effect of treatment of tuberculosis – though it is possible that the medication used in treatment is what causes the impairment. Both hearing loss and tinnitus are common side effects of Lyme disease (carried by ticks), as well as some STDs, like syphilis.

3. Disease: Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the fluids in the inner ear, is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. Its root is unknown, and the disease typically affects only one ear in individuals between

ages 20 and 50. Other issues known to affect hearing include hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), kidney disease medications, Paget’s disease and autoimmune inner ear disease, which results in sudden onset hearing loss and must be treated as a medical emergency.

4. Hereditary Conditions: Hearing loss may run in your family. Some serious genetic disorders, such as Waardenburg syndrome, cause the head and internal organs to develop differently, which may result in hearing loss that is difficult to correct through treatment or surgery. Other conditions, like otosclerosis, affect the bones in the middle ear that conduct sound to the cochlea; some of these conditions are correctable with surgery.

5. Tumors and Cancer: Cancers of the head, neck or ear areas can affect the inner ear, but cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, are also notorious for causing hearing loss. Some recent research out of the U.K. suggests that aspirin can help prevent permanent hearing loss as a side effect of the cancer drug cisplatin, but further research is necessary. Acoustic neuromas and tumors that grow on the auditory nerve can cause hearing loss or tinnitus, and they may put pressure on the brain, leading to other conditions. Both are usually benign and can be removed surgically.

Brace Yourself: Your Thyroid Lab Test Is Probably All Wrong

The current medical system isn’t on your side. Some physicians don’t stay current with the literature, or if they do, they are reading drug-funded studies. Some docs actually still believe what they were taught 30 years ago in medical school.

How does that help you?

When a physician uses knowledge from an outdated toolbox, you pay the price.

Case in point, I received this email from someone, name withheld: “Suzy, I’ve had all the tests for thyroid but they all come back fine, yet for years I’ve been losing hair on top of my head, and I have no leg or pubic hair, the driest skin and dry eyes. So on and so on and now my bladder is overactive. Do you think I have a thyroid problem?”

So does this person have thyroid disease? Probably, although, we’d need lab tests to confirm. If you go to 100 doctors and ask them to test your thyroid, about 98 of them will use the standard “TSH” test and if it’s normal, they will tell you that you do not have thyroid disease, like my anonymous reader above. They will treat you for everything but thyroid!

The TSH test is old and outdated and if you base your life on the results of this test, you’ll never get well. You’ll be prescribed 10 different drugs to smack down all the symptoms of thyroid disease, rather than ever treating the thyroid disease itself. Imagine the arcade game Whac-A-Mole!

If your physician uses only the TSH

test and it is normal, you may be told you have fibromyalgia and be given analgesics for the muscle pain and you’ll be diagnosed with either depression or anxiety and be prescribed either Zoloft or Xanax (or both). You’ll also be sent to the pharmacy for Rogaine for the hair loss and Detrol LA for the overactive bladder. Good luck getting well. All this expense and misery, because your TSH came back normal. A TSH can be normal and it’s still very possible that you have some degree of hypothyroidism, or you are genuinely “thyroid sick” as I refer to it in my book, “Thyroid Healthy” available at my website and Amazon.

Maybe instead of 10 drugs you need one drug as in thyroid medicine or maybe natural thyroid dietary supplementation, or a combination. A good doctor will know.

Forget about the TSH test, it’s just okay.

It’s part of a bigger scenario. The most important tests are the following: Total T3, Total T4, Free T3, Free T4, TPO and TG Antibodies, Reverse T3 and Ferritin.

Libraries To Offer “Gang Wise” Series

OCEAN COUNTY – The Ocean County Library will offer gang awareness programs for teens, parents, educators, clergy and other concerned adults about the growing menace of gangs.

This series is designed to educate and present strategies detailing how residents can deal with gangs. Local police departments, township and educational officials will have the opportunity to discuss gang presence with their local residents and what is being done to combat it.

Edwin Torres, a retired New Jersey police lieutenant and juvenile gang expert, will explain the warning signs of gang presence in a neighborhood and why kids join them.

He will also give a brief history of gangs and gang markings, such as colors, symbols and clothing used to mark out territory and distinguish each other from rival gangs.

property on the street, and since Sandy she always has over three feet of water in her backyard.

“We have been told there’s a township plan to raise Knoll Crest Avenue and I’m concerned that there will be more water pouring down to the south end of the street,” she said at a recent council meeting.

Before the township installed a bulkhead on Bay Shore Drive in 1998 (the street that runs parallel to the bay), water would flow into the bay, but as a result of the vinyl bulkhead, the water pools there and floods her property, Argyris said.

“When the flooding began, the township initially came down with a fire engine and pumped the water over the bulkhead a couple of times, and then came and put two holes in the bulkhead, but that did not give enough outflow and created a huge lake in front of my house, which then floods onto the property,” she said.

When the holes didn’t work, the township put in a U-shaped retention drain system underneath the south end of Knoll Crest Avenue, but it never had the capacity to absorb all the water, so the drainage system fills up and the street fills up, resulting in more flooding on Argyris’s property.

Not only that, but the bay water dumps sand debris on the south end of Knoll Crest Avenue, and it has clogged the retention

basin, rendering it nonfunctional, she said.

“I’m hoping that we can work together and find some resolution about the town ordinances that say you’re not supposed to flood your neighbor’s property, and to be able to avoid health hazards with standing water,” Argyris said.

The standing water is a big concern to Dr. Catherine Hanlon, an emergency room physician and former Air Force flight surgeon who shares a property line with Argyris.

“After spending four years in the military doing global medicine epidemiology...I am deeply concerned over the fact that we’ve had our first confirmed death in Monmouth County due to West Nile Virus,” she said to council members. “If there is a day with winds of less than four miles per hour, you’re going to have this is Ocean County in a heartbeat.”

West Nile Virus has no current treatment and it kills one-third of the people it infects, and leaves another one-third permanently disabled, Dr. Hanlon said.

“If you do get infected, you’re lucky lucky if you’re the one-third that survives it intact,” she said.

The water problem on Argyris’s property is a health hazard to neighbors because it’s standing water, and does not have the ebb and flow of a tidal pool that responds to tidal surges that prevents the West Nile mosquitos larvae from hatching, Dr. Hanlon said.

Mosquitos that carry the West Nile Virus and malaria have a genetic mutation that

renders them resistant to pesticides and spraying, she said.

“You will not get rid of this by spraying; the only way to deal with this from a health standpoint is by draining all standing water,” she added.

She said she can’t sit outside on her back deck during the spring because it’s not safe, nor it is safe for the entire township if the West Nile virus is spreading.

“Whether the township wants to address this from an engineering standpoint, or whether the township wants to address this as a health hazard, something needs to be done because the township is facing a great deal of potential liability if this is not addressed and someone gets infected in Brick from this,” Dr. Hanlon said.

The township has hired CME Associates of Howell to investigate elevating Knoll Crest Avenue to alleviate the flooding issues within the right of way (the township-owned property that the road exists within), said Consulting Engineer Doug Rohmeyer.

As soon as the Brick Municipal Utilities Authority is finished replacing water mains there in the upcoming weeks, surveying crews would be deployed to map out the existing conditions, and determine the specifications at the existing right of way.

“We want to gain an understanding of, what is the road elevation at now?”

Rohmeyer said in a phone call after the council meeting.

The road elevation varies from two to

three feet, and using tide data, last week the entire bay was elevated over two feet, he said. CME would look at historical data, the frequency of flooding in the area, and how high the water is to recommend improvement.

“The problem has existed for a long time... the road is very low-lying and there are areas that are covered or breached by the bay on a regular basis,” he said.

After the survey is completed, probably by the summer, CME Associates would develop concepts that are constructible and permittable within the available right of way, and then present those concepts and cost estimates to the mayor and council, he said.

“Our main concern to this project is the circle on Mandalay Drive to Hamilton drive, because it provides the only access in and out of that neighborhood,” Rohmeyer said.

He said that CME Associates and Brick Township have worked together on similar projects, and any modifications to a road have to take into account how it would affect private properties.

There is only 33 feet of right of way in front of Argyris’s property. The options there would be controlling the water with a concrete curb, a swale, or some type of pipe system, Rohmeyer said.

“It’s going to be our number one priority to manage the runoff so that it does not run onto private property,” he said.

Obviously Not A Golfer Dear Joel, I moved from Queens, New York into an over-55 development in Monroe Township. Although my husband always enjoyed golf, it has now become an obsession of his. I sometimes feel as if I would have been better off staying in New York. I am bored and lonely while he is out enjoying himself. I sometimes feel as if I would have been better off staying in New York.

Answer: In as much as it would be nice for your husband to be spending more time with you, he doesn’t have any obligation to do so. Many people would be very happy that their spouses have found pleasure in their retirement years.

My suggestion to you is to find some-

thing that you enjoy.

Many women in the over-55 developments play golf. I am certain that there is a school in the vicinity and you too can be swinging a club and enjoying the links.

You gain nothing by blaming him for your boredom. Try something new and if that isn’t enjoyable try something different.

You too deserve happiness in life. Our blaming others for our unhappiness gets us nowhere.

Bowl For Kids’ Sake Fundraiser

OCEAN COUNTY – The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ocean County are holding an Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake event on February 28 at Playdrome, Toms River starting at 10:30 a.m. and March 6 at Thunderbird Lanes, Manahawkin starting at noon.

Each bowler is asked to pledge a minimum $50 donation that they may personally donate or collect from family members, friends, co-workers and/or their employers.

The money raised from this event will be used to support BBBSOC’s one-to-one youth mentoring programs.

As a chef with restaurants on three continents and the good fortune to travel and eat my way around the world, I am always fascinated to see how so many dishes that may at first seem unique to a particular cuisine actually have close cousins in other countries.

Fried chicken, for example, is undeniably all-American; yet, I grew up eating wonderful skillet-fried chicken in Austria, and chunks of crispy chicken are popular bar snacks in Japan. Then there’s my grandmother’s pot ato -and- cheese-st uffed du mp lings, remarkably similar to Italian ravioli and Chinese pot stickers.

Now consider the sandwich. It may owe its name to the English nobleman who, because he couldn’t be bothered to tear himself away from the gambling table, asked his meat to be served between two slices of bread. But that doesn’t fully explain why so many countries today claim sandwiches all their own. Take the panini, Italy’s own signature pressed sandwich. Yes, people across Europe and North America have enthusiastically taken to it, coming up with all sorts of variations involving different breads, cheeses and other fillings and seasonings. Still, other countries have their own griddled sandwiches.

There’s America’s lunchtime classic, grilled cheese, for example.

One of my favorite panini cousins, though, is the Cuban sandwich, which originated about a cent ur y ago among Cuban im mig rants in southern Florida. It’s one of the most generous grilled sandwiches I have encountered, featuring cheese and a generous assortment of cured and cooked meats, plus pickles and mustard, cooked not between two slices of bread but inside a length of long, slender French bread. Better still, the sandwich is weighted down to press it as thinly as possible, to produce a wonderfully crusty, crunchy exterior that complements the hot, rich filling bound together with melted cheese.

This is no ordinary panini.

Yet, as special as it sounds, a Cuban sandwich is still incredibly quick and easy to make at home. You can use any assortment of fillings you want, including roast pork or other leftover meat. Just be sure to include yellow ballpark-style mustard and sliced dill

pickles to achieve just the right tangy f lavor. The other key is to not just to cook the sandwich inside a panini grill, but also to weigh down the grill with a brick or heavy cans (placing them carefully for even pressure and so they don’t slide off ).

You’ll be amazed by the difference these few little secrets make to the results. And I predict that, once you try it, you’ll make Cuban Sandwiches a regular part of your own home cooking repertoire.

CUBAN SANDWICH Serves 1 1 length French or sourdough baguette, cut to fit your panini grill 3 to 4 tablespoons mayonnaise 3 to 4 tablespoons yellow mustard 2 to 3 thin slices Swiss cheese 4 to 6 thin slices smoked or cured ham 4 to 6 slices salami 6 thin lengthwise slices dill pickle 3 or 4 slices roast pork, or other meat of your choice 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened Preheat an electric panini press or a hinged electric counter top double-sided grill.

With a serrated bread knife, cut the length of baguette horizontally in half. Evenly spread both cut surfaces of the bread with mayonnaise, then mustard. Arrange the bread halves coated side up on a work surface.

Layer the bottom half of the bread with the Swiss cheese. Then, in even layers, arrange the roast pork, salami, ham and pickle slices.

Press the top piece of the baguette onto the filling, compacting the sandwich evenly. Brush the top of the bread with butter. Place the sandwich in the preheated panini grill.

Weigh down the top of the panini grill with a brick wrapped in foil or with two large cans of tomatoes or other canned goods, placing them for even weight distribution and to avoid them possibly slipping off.

Cook the sandwich until the filling is heated through, the cheese is melted and the bread is well browned and very crusty, about 5 minutes.

If you want to cut the sandwich in half, use a serrated knife and a sawing motion to avoid squeezing out the filling. Serve immediately.
