Jackson Retiree Regales Tales Of Police Life
By Jennifer Peacock Call him White Malik. In his storied 38-year career as a police officer, a “street cop,” he not only earned commendation upon commendation but earned the trust and respect of Newark’s black community that helped him solve dozens upon dozens of murders. Retired for 16 years now, that’s a message he wants to share with law enforcement and the public today. “I’m trying to bring a message out here for the police that are out here now, because it’s a tough job. I don’t know why it’s all about racism,” the policeman said. How did he do it? He was White Malik,
and people would talk, to him alone. But before that, he was simply Louis Portella Jr., the youngest of 4 and only son, “King Louis,” in an Italian American family who grew up in an Irish, Italian, and Polish section of Newark. He lasted nine days at the University of West Virginia on a football scholarship ‑‑ he missed home. (“You have to understand something about Italian culture. I had four mothers,” he said.) New Spray Park Open Weekends
By Catherine Galioto JACKSON – The newest edition to the township park system welcomes some romping around under its water hoses and sprays, as the Jackson Spray Park will open Ju ne 18 at the Just ice Complex. The township announced the park will only be open on weekends at this time, making the hours of operation Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The reason behind the weekend-only hours was to gauge demand before opening to expanded hours, officials said. “Since this is a new endeavor for Jackson Township, we want to ensure the demand prior to scheduling additional staff,” said township administ rator Helene Schlegel. “Once we determine the spray park’s level of success, we will re-evaluate the hours of operation.” Rules include: the park is open only to children 12 and younger, who must have adult supervision at all times. Bathing suits must be worn when in the Spray Park, and only individuals and families, not groups, are allowed to use the park. Diapers must be covered by swim diapers. Violation of any of the 25 rules should be reported to Department of Recreation. Violators may receive up to a $300 fine and 30 days community service. A complete list of rules is available on the township website and on-site at the park. The park is open to the public, not just Jackson residents. There is no fee to use the park. The sports-themed spray park is unguarded; it contains timed sprays and fountains and no pools or slides.
