County Considers Move, Closing Its Jackson Garage

By Jennifer Peacock OCEAN COUNTY – Ocean County government is looking to build a garage in Manchester, and would likely close the county garage in Jackson as a result. The Board of Freeholders heard plans during a recent pre-Board meeting to construct a county road department garage in the Ridgeway section of Manchester Township. While the Freeholders’ talked about “smart growth and future savings,”

the exact potential would come from consolidating the Toms River facilities to Manchester. “I know the County bought the property at the 547 end of Ridgeway Road and got Planning Board Approval to create a satellite facility there. In fact, I received an e-mail from code enforcement…indicating there was a large area of garbage and debris on the front of the property and was asked if there was anything we could do. I was advised (June 28) there were dumpsters on site.” (Mobile - See Page 5)

By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – Residents did not wake up July 1 to a 23-cent gas price hike. While that reprieve is likely temporary, the Jackson Township Council has said they are against such an increase. Council passed a unanimous resolution recently rejecting the proposed increase, which Governor Chris Christie supports but Senate President Stephen Sweeney did not advance due his perceived lack of support to get the bill approved. The proposed legislation would have raised the gas tax from 14.5 cents to 37.5 cents per gallon, with the state then gradually lowering the sales tax from 7 percent to 6 percent by 2018. According to state officials, the raise would have replenished the Transportation Trust Fund. Because the legislation did not move forward, the Governor’s office ordered the stoppage of “nonessential” DOT and NJ Transit projects around the state. The work, under executive order 210, stopped at 11:59 p.m. July 8 for at least seven days. “As Governor, I am entrusted with the responsibility to protect the health, safety, (Gas - See Page 4)
