Dinner And Auction Raise Funds For Vets Memorial
–Photo by Jennifer Peacock Veterans from all branches were asked to go up to the dance floor when their respective branch anthem was played. They and the guests sang God Bless America once assembled. By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – More than 250 people gathered at the AMVETS on Toms River Road on October 15 to honor all veterans while raising funds for a memorial doing the same.
The Veterans Memorial Garden held its third annual dinner, dance, and auction to raise money for the memorial that sits at Commodore Boulevard and Jackson Mills Road. The memorial is unique in that it honors all, not just combat or killed, veterans.
With the help of family, friends, and local businesses, Charles Garofano and Kenneth Bressi hosted the evening, which featured door prizes, a gift auction, a buffet dinner and dessert, a DJ and dancing. One veteran (Dinner - See Page 6)

Fees Now Waived If You Sign Up For No-Knock Online
By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – Some residents are out the buck, but homeowners interested in joining the township’s no-knock registry will likely have the $1 fee waived from now on. The issue of the fee—which covered the cost of the envelope and postage to mail the no-knock decal to residents—came up when municipal clerk Ann Marie Eden announced the township upgraded its website to allow for residents to fill out and submit the no-knock form entirely online. Residents previously could download the form, fill out the applicable information, and either mail or drop off the form. The decals were free to pick up from the clerk’s office. Only those who had it mailed had to pay the $1 fee. Despite that upgrade, the township didn’t have a system for residents to pay that fee online. Eden asked the council to consider waiving that fee. The new wording to the township code, which is up for a final vote on October 25, will waive the fee for all homeowners seeking to join the no-knock list. The first decal is free for everyone. All previously issued decals are in full effect, officials said. (No Knock - See Page 5)
Questions Raised About Drinking Water Safety
By Jennifer Peacock and Catherine Galioto OCEAN COUNTY – He walks Manchester town hall with a cup in his hand. It’s not filled with electrolyte-infused designer water or Hawaiian volcanic water or even the water bottled in Maine. No, Manchester Public Works director Al Yodakis fills his cup from the municipal water fountains that dot town hall’s hallways. The town’s water is safe, officials said. Resident Hank Glen asked officials about a report circulating that the township’s wa-
ter supply is tainted with Chromium-6, or hexavalent chromium, which the National Toxicology Program reports is carcinogenic when ingested. The report conducted by the Environmental Working Group out of Washington, D.C., with an office in Oakland, Calif., showed that Chromium-6 is in the drinking water for more than 200 million Americans in all 50 states. The Environmental Protection Agency ordered that local water utilities test for the
compound, and from 2013 to 2015 more than 60,000 water samples were taken across the country. According to EWG, 75 percent of those samples tested positive for Chromium-6. California, the place where Chromium-6 entered the national consciousness thanks to the Julia Roberts’ 2000 film Erin Brockovich, depicting the real-life battle of contamination in Hinkley, Calif., set the maximum acceptable level of the compound (Water - See Page 5)
