No Playground, No Problem

By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – The request was likely a first in Jackson according to officials. The kids won’t be getting a playground, and everyone seemed okay with that. Cassville Estates off Route 571 on Aidan Lane was approved back in 2004 and over the years has about 28 homes, the last of which was built around 2014. The original plans called for a retention basin, which was constructed, and a playground, which was not. The engineering firm that had the application, PDS, requested that the planning board allow the plans to be amended to take out the playground. Ian Borden, president of PDS, said an (Playground - See Page 5)

A Day That Will Live In Infamy By Judy Smestad-Nunn OCEAN COUNTY – A local WWII veteran was honored, and was also a guest speaker during a ceremony held on the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lakewood resident, Jim DiPiazza, 91, who served in the Pacific theater during the war, was presented with a proclamation by Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari that called the December 7, 1941 attack “a defining moment in the history of the United States.” During a two-wave, two-hour attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese warplanes, which began at 7:55 a.m. on a Sunday, over 2,400 people were killed, another 1,000 were

wounded, 21 American ships were sunk or damaged, and 300 airplanes were damaged or destroyed, most of which were still on the ground. Nearly half of the casualties were on the naval battleship USS Arizona, which was hit four times by Japanese bombers and eventually sank. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Before introducing DiPiazza, Head Reference Librarian Elizabeth Cronin said that “commemoration requires remembrance,” and that many who were there during the (Veteran - See Page 4)

By Jennifer Peacock JACKSON – The school district is getting its own “Fame,” suburban style. A fine arts academy, housed at both Jackson Memorial and Liberty high schools, will welcome its fi rst freshman class in September. This specialized academy will join the four Jackson already sponsors: Air Force JROTC; Digital Media; STEM; and Jackson Academy of Business. The district has been percolating this idea for two years, under the suggestion of superintendent of school Dr. Stephen Genco.

Assistant superintendent Nicole Pormilli called it a “school within a school, a small environment in a larger environment.” The school, which does not have an official name as of press time, will have what the professionals called “strands”: instrument/ vocal music, theater/drama, art/graphics, and dance. This year’s eighth-graders interested in a specialized curriculum will have a chance to apply and audition for a spot in one of those four strands. They’ll still be required to take core academic subjects. (Academy - See Page 5)
