By Judy Smestad-Nunn OCEAN COUNTY – Five years after the surge from Superstorm Sandy caused ocean waves to wash over the barrier island and flush out Barnegat Bay, the primary challenges facing the 42-mile long estuary remain the same, said executive director of Save Barnegat Bay Britta Wenzel. While water sampling taken immediately after the storm might have shown decreased levels of nitrogen and phosphorus because of the flushing, non-point source pollution from developed land continues to run into the bay, causing algae blooms and killing off what was once a thriving shellfish industry, she said. Brick Joins Lawsuit Of Pharma Companies By Judy Smestad-Nunn BRICK – The township has joined other cities and states in filing a lawsuit against companies that manufacture opioids, and has retained the national law f ir m of Motley Rice, LLC who would receive no money unless they are successful in their litigation. During the Oct. 10 council meeting,

Mayor John G. Ducey said the grounds for a lawsuit is based on the opioid manufacturers’ claims to patients and medical providers that OxyContin was not addictive since it was a pill, and that only injectable or sniff-able drugs could become addictive. “So they said don’t worry, these are (Pharma- See Page 9)

By Chris Lundy TRENTON – A former Brick Township employee, and the daughter of the former mayor, pleaded guilty to stealing almost $1 million from the township’s health insurance plan, according to a press release from the state attorney general and the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor. Kim Bogan, 52, of Brick, pleaded guilty to theft by deception in a hearing before Superior Court Judge Linda G. Baxter in Ocean County. She is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 2. As part of her plea agreement, the state will seek a five year prison sentence, and she (Defrauds - See Page 11)
