Land Navigation: Book Review--"The Ultimate Navigation Manual" by Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue (MiBSAR): Special Operations Blog on Monday, 23 January 2012 at 07:05 Heads-up land navigation aficionados! I just received an awesome land navigation book from across the big pond. Six years in the making, The Ultimate Navigation Manual: All the Techniques You Need to Become an Expert Navigator was just released under the Collins imprint of London by HarperCollins Publishers, the world's leading publishing group. Written by Lyle F. Brotherton--a mountain searchand-rescue expert with decades of experience who has taught land navigation to over 135 mountain rescue groups, SAR teams, and special forces units from 24 countries--this 368-page, richly-illustrated field manual is loaded to the gills with useful land navigation information.
Need a reason to learn land nav... "Navigational errors are the most common contributory cause of mountain accidents," according to Sir Ranulph Fiennes, a British Army counter-insurgency veteran and world-renowned adventurer. Such errors are often "the first link in a chain of events that can lead to catastrophe."

Sir Ranulph (Ran) Fiennes, pronounced "Fines" (1944-)
And Fiennes, who wrote the preface for The Ultimate Navigation Manual, should know: he holds the titles of being the first person to visit both the North and South Poles by surface means, and the first person to completely cross Antarctica on foot; and he's regarded as the world's greatest living explorer in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The Ultimate Navigation Manual is the first field instructional manual, according to Fiennes, to bring together the navigational best practices of search-and-rescue teams and special forces units worldwide.
Contents Whether you're just delving into the subject of land navigation or you're a pro at it, The Ultimate Navigation Manual has something for everyone between its covers. An expansive table of contents and a thorough index allow readers to easily and intuitively find what they're looking for within its five, highly-organized sections...
