New from Harper Collins is the modestly titled Ultimate Navigation Manual, a 'how to' which is designed to cater for all levels from raw beginners through to search and rescue professionals. What makes the book different from other nav resources, says the publisher, is the professional background of author Lyle Brotherton, who has spent six years working with search and rescue teams in 24 countries and instructs special forces worldwide in advanced navigation techniques.
New aims to provide comprehensive guide to navigating for all levels of experience.
The contents certainly sound pretty comprehensive with chapters covering everything from the basics right through to specialist sections on navigating through Arctic and jungle environments. And, as you'd expect, there are chapters on using GPS equipment. It's all designed to be as accessible to beginners as well as full-on nav geeks and professionals says Harper Collins and the contents list suggests that it's pretty wide ranging in scope. Contents include using environmental clues, basic stellar navigation, how compasses work and how to choose the right one for you, relocation procedures – what to do if you are lost basically – and those special environments mentioned above, so the best techniques to use in deserts, jungles, coastal areas and so on. “It has been my privilege to spend years researching best navigational practice all over the world.,” says the author. “I am personally absorbed by emerging technologies, but just as enthusiastic about the simplest of techniques used by experienced navigators to maximise safety. I wanted to bring all of these into the book so that people can extract whatever information is relevant to them and their circumstances.”
Author Lyle Brotherton has worked with search and rescue teams and special forces.
