AT A GLANCE DETAILED ITINERARY

DETAILED ITINERARY: Friday 29th August

CALVIN COTTAR

The Cottar’s Homestead is on a private concession just outside the Mara, and offers exclusive off road drives, night drives and walks which are not possible within the reserve. The property adjoins the Lamai area which is unfenced and is an extremely active game corridor. Cottar’s ensures their clients exclusivity and the chance to get into the actual Mara Reserve and chase that elusive river crossing. Calvin Cottar and his team will discuss the detailed plan for the group. Daily activities may include, game drives, guided walks, spa treatments, a visit to a traditional Masai village, a visit to the Great Mara River and the infamous site of the great migration, a balloon safari, picnic breakfasts, leisure time in camp by the infinity pool, the Masai Warrior school for children, sundowners and beautiful vistas.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

A masseuse is available on a daily basis and if required, private body guards and personal exercise trainers can be made available. The area is amongst the best in Africa for wildlife viewing even in months when the migration is not present. In the hills behind camp, there are species that do not exist elsewhere in the Masai Mara including Colobus monkey, Verreaux eagle, Chandlers reedbuck, wild dog and occasionally greater kudu. The ideal time for a safari is either early morning or from 4pm onward, the midday temperatures tend to be too hot for animals to be out and about. Typically game drives usually last about 4hours but will be determined by the groups requirements.

EXTRA INFO

A safari walk offers a completely different experience. Closer to nature, it is about the less obvious wonders that are often overlooked when in a vehicle. At a comfortable pace the armed guides will share their knowledge of flora, fauna and wildlife. Scan for tracks, use your senses to detect wildlife on the plains, in the woods and valleys, and enjoy the sheer beauty of the area. The duration and nature of the terrain for the walk is determined by group.

AT A GLANCE DETAILED ITINERARY

DETAILED ITINERARY: Saturday 30th August This day will begin with an early morning wakeup call with tea and coffee followed by a 4am departure to the launch site to enjoy a balloon safari over the Masai Mara (weather permitting). The flight will last about an hour and upon landing, the group will enjoy a full breakfast with a traditional champagne toast.

CALVIN COTTAR

Upon arrival at the launch site, meet your pilot and receive a safety briefing, while watching the balloon inflate. At dawn you will board and take off, rising as the sun rises, floating in whichever direction the winds of the morning take you. The pilot can precisely control the altitude of the balloon, sometimes flying at treetop height, sometimes lower. At other times he will ascend to one thousand feet or more to see the enormity and wonderful panorama of the Masai Mara, offering a unique perspective and great photographic opportunities of the wildlife below.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

After breakfast, Calvin may plan to take you to the Great Mara River, the infamous site of the Great Migration, stopping off for a picnic lunch beside the river or alternatively back to camp for a leisurely afternoon for some and game drives or different activities for others.

EXTRA INFO

Hours can be spent relaxing in the Homestead, indulging in a spa treatmentmanicure, pedicure or a soothing massage or alternatively you can choose to do one of the additional activities which include: Masai village visits which gives an insight to a day in the life of the Masai, market visits where visitors may purchase handicrafts or a school visit to the primary school which Cottar’s Camp sponsors. A fantastic activity for children is the Masai Warrior School. The Warrior school is a 2-3 hour session of various activities such as bow and arrow practice, bush tracking, fire making and stone throwing led by one of our Masai Warriors.

AT A GLANCE DETAILED ITINERARY

DETAILED ITINERARY: Sunday 31st August The last and final day!

CALVIN COTTAR

This could begin with a 5:30 am wakeup call with coffee or tea followed by a half day scenic safari stopping off mid-morning for a picnic breakfast at one of the many scenic spots in the Masai Mara and then returning for lunch or one last safari walk. Cottar’s will accommodate most requests. The afternoon can be spent at leisure enjoying all the facilities Cottar’s has to offer. Sam & Karen Hackner will need to depart Cottar’s at 11:45 for their private charter to Nairobi at 12:00 to connect with their flight back to Johannesburg at 16:05

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The private charter for the rest of the group has to leave Cottar’s airstrip by 18:30 at the latest. This would mean arriving at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by 19:30, a 4 hour wait for the flight to Munich at 23:25, an hour longer than the required 3 hours before for the flight. A possible alternative is to depart Cottar’s at 16:00, fly to the airport, drive to the Grill Room at the Ole Sereni hotel which is approximately 15-20minutes away, for a private dinner, returning to the airport by 20:25, 3 hours before the check in. PLEASE NOTE – THIS ARRANGEMENT IS NOT IN PLACE. COTTAR’S, SUBJECT TO AVAILABLITY, CAN MAKE THE NECESSARY ARRANGEMENTS.

BACKGROUND ON CALVIN COTTAR Calvin has been guiding in the African bush since he was fifteen years old. Whether it be in vehicle or on foot travelling around the Maasai Mara with him is as similar as walking through a childhood home and pointing out locations that hold never ending stories of memories. He has been voted on several separate occasions as the Best Guide in Africa and has been interviewed by countless international reporters, travel writers, published authors, and conservationist enthusiasts.

CALVIN COTTAR THE GREAT MIGRATION

He has been a professional hunter, owned a wildlife management company and worked for the Kenya Wildlife Service in the community development department, where he initiated five district wildlife associations and now does private guiding. He is the owner of Cottar’s 1920’s Camp, works on the Cottar’s Wildlife Conservation Trust, and develops and explores new safari destinations such as South Sudan. Through a life time of accumulated knowledge and experience, having the highest KSPGA qualification (Gold) and his unparalleled passion for the wildlife makes any experience with him a memorable one, filled with knowledge, excitement, and deep enjoyment.

EXTRA INFO

"For those who find themselves hooked on Africa, there comes a time when they want something different …not every guide can take you there. Some do not have the taste for it and some do not have the know-how, but Calvin Cottar and his 1920’s safaris come with the kind of pedigree and promise that is hard to resist." ~Financial Times~

THE GREAT MIGRATION The Serengeti & Masai Mara are of the most famous of all the African wildlife areas. The “Great Migration has given the Serengeti & Masai Mara their place on the world wildlife stage - over one and a half million wildebeest, zebra and antelope are continually on the move in search of sustenance. The precise timing of the migration changes from year to year and is driven by availability of water and grazing.

CALVIN COTTAR

Although, ultimately moving in a clockwise direction, the migration is also not a continuous forward motion and the animals migrate forward and then back, milling around as they spread out on vast plains before massing together on the banks of the Mara and Grumeti rivers for the legendary river crossings. Their epic journey takes the animals through a variety of parks, reserves and protected areas where strategically placed safari camps and lodges allow visitors to watch the herds at close quarters.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The entire Serengeti ecosystem, including that section protected by the Masai Mara covers some 25,000 sq km (9,650 sq miles). It is through here that the animals migrate in a clock wise direction, moving from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains in October and November and then heading west and north after the long rains in April, May & June. The northernmost point of their movement culminates in the Masai Mara in Kenya.
