Share the Fun entertains audience Six Share the Fun acts by Boone County 4-H members were judged at the Boone County Fairgrounds on Monday, July 15. Share the Fun provides 4-H’ers with the opportunity to share their talents to entertain the audience. Acts range from skits and dance routines to instrumental groups, and vocal solos. The contest is judged on presentation and entertainment criteria. The acts preformed before the modeling of fashions purchased or sewn by 4-H members and judged as part of Fashion Day activities. Three acts were selected by the judges, Jeremy Bethards of Urbandale, Mary Carpenter of Madrid, and Janelle Tungesvik of Boone, to represent Boone County at the Iowa State Fair. Acts selected for State Fair included group percussion act by the Bluff Creek Wranglers titled Post Fair Stomp, by Lillie and Lance

Longhorn, Angelica Moody, Katie Ross, Aaliyah, Bryce, Ebony, Vanessa and Viatris Scott, Emma and Claire Whalen. The second act selected for state fair was an Irish Dance by Claire, Delaney and Emma Aitchison. Our third act selected to represent Boone County at the State Fair was a clarinet duet by Braeden Weyhrich and Dagney Paskach. Natalie Bretey, with her vocal solo title Jar of Hearts was selected as a State Fair Alternate. Purple ribbons were presented to the following acts: “What Love Really Means,” a vocal solo by Hannah Heckman. Blue ribbons were presented to the following acts: “Musete,” a piano solo by Claire Smith. Superintendent for Share the Fun is Melody Bethards of Madrid.

4-Hers selected to communicate at State Fair Thirteen 4-Hers have recently taken part in one of America’s greatest fears . . . public speaking. These youth prepared educational presentations to educate their audience as well as took part in the public speaking and extemporaneous speaking events on July 8th at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Four communications acts were selected to represent Boone County at the Iowa State Fair in August. Three educational presentations from Boone County will be presented at the Iowa State Fair on August 10th. The 4-Hers selected for State Fair, along with

their 4-H club and the title of their presentation are: Josie Noland, Peoples Guys & Gals, Brain Aneurysms; Aaron Swanson, Madrid Duets, Beekeeping Basics; Emma Toms, Luther Livewires, Les Miserables. Additional Educational Presentation participants received purple, blue and red ribbons. Receiving a purple outstanding ribbon was Lillie Longhorn, Bluff Creek Wranglers, Popular Ways to Tie Scarves. 4-Hers receiving blue ribbons were Summer Crocheck, Luther Livewires, Gluten; Madelyn Ostendorf, Madrid Merry Makers, Ready, Set, Pop!;

Landra Reece, Montana Miners, Wind Energy. Participants receiving red ribbons were Lance Longhorn, Bluff Creek Wranglers, Tie Dyeing T-Shirts; and Spencer Toms, Luther Livewires, The Fog. The Boone County Farm Bureau annually supports the 4-H educational presentation program by donating award money to the State Fair winners to assist with costs of presenting out of county. Two senior age 4-H members entered the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. Each member drew a topic and had thirty

minutes to prepare a four to six minute talk on the topic. Selected to represent Boone County at the Iowa State Fair was Zach Martin, Luther Livewires. Bryce Scott, Bluff Creek Wranglers, also took part in this event and earned a red ribbon for his efforts. Four junior age 4-H members participated in the Public Speaking Contest. Each member chose one of three topics and came prepared with their 1-3 minute speech. This is a Boone County only contest. Spencer Toms, Luther Livewires, was selected as an outstanding participant in this category and it earned him a

purple ribbon. The following 4-H members received Blue ribbons for their efforts: Lillie Longhorn, Bluff Creek Wranglers; Lance Longhorn, Bluff Creek Wranglers; Hannah Sackett, Peoples Guys & Gals. The 4-H members are evaluated on content, delivery, and results. The judges for the contest were Cari Higgins of Ankeny and Carla Schaefer of Coon Rapids. Five volunteers made the program a success. They were Zach Martin, Emma Whalen, Haley Bethards, Hannah and Karen Sackett. Melody Bethards of Madrid is the 4-H Communications Superintendent.

Working exhibits Three 4-H working exhibits were selected to advance to the Iowa State Fair during 4-H Extravaganza at the Boone County Fair on July 19. The purpose of working exhibits is for 4-H members to develop their communication skills through interacting with their audience. They must attract the audience and involve the audience in a hands-on learning experience. The following 4-H’ers were selected by the judge to represent Boone County at the Iowa State Fair: Turtle Fun by Kenna Redies and Makenzie Weyhrich of Boone; Balloon Rockets by Matthew Kordick of Boone; Texture Rubbing by Carissa and Amanda Brown of Boone. Additional working exhibits receiving blue ribbons were Sizzlin’ Suncatchers by Braeden Weyhrich of Boone and Bottle Cap Magnets by Micki and Ariel Charter of Woodward and Elizabeth Weyers of Bouton. Communications superintendent was Melody Bethards of Madrid.

49 Boone Co. 4-H exhibits selected for State Fair One-hundred-ninety (190) 4-H members entered a total of 890 4-H family consumer science and special interest exhibits at the 2013 Boone County Fair on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. Fourteen judges visited with 4-H members about their exhibits during conference judging. Members talked about their goals, steps they went through to create their exhibits, and what they learned. The judges shared comments and suggestions with each member as exhibits were evaluated. 4-H exhibits are judged to educate, encourage, and evaluate the youth about their project work. 4-H members who have completed fifth through twelfth grades are eligible to have exhibits selected for the Iowa State Fair August 8 - 18. Mary Clancy, Boone County ISU Extension and Outreach Program Coordinator, announced the winners in the Herdsmanship Contest at this year’s Boone County Fair. All clubs with livestock exhibits at the county fair are given a herdsmanship score each day according to the following criteria: cleanliness of alleys, stalls, and pens; arrangement of exhibit area; and appearance of animals. This year’s herdsmanship “Club of the Day” and species awards were sponsored by Vision Bank.
