Pedley joins Mid-America staff Laura Schnabel and Kyle Hegtvedt

Schnabel, Hegtvedt to wed in August

Laura Schnabel, Winterset, is the daughter of Lester and Eva Schnabel, Sheffield. She is a 2007 graduate of SCMT High School and a 2012 graduate in medical laboratory technology from Hawkeye Community College. She is employed by Madison County Health Care System, Winterset. Kyle Hegtvedt, Rockwell, is the son of Dan and Laurie Hegtvedt, Mason City. He is a 2003 graduate of Mason City High School. He is employed by Dedicated Logistics, Inc. The couple will marry Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton.

In this issue:

The Hampton Chronicle had its second new face join the staff in as many months last week. Nick Pedley joined new Chronicle Editor Jeff Forward in the Hampton office on Wednesday, May 30. He is replacing outgoing regional news editor Travis Fischer, who is moving to California at the beginning of July. Pedley will cover Fischer’s former territory in southern Cerro Gordo County and northern Franklin County. He’ll also cover some additional stories around Hampton and the surrounding area. Pedley is a 2013 graduate of the University of Iowa. He earned bachelor of arts degrees in both Journalism & Mass Communication and Political Science. Pedley is no stranger to the newspaper business by any means. His family has owned his hometown publication, The Ocheyedan PressMelvin News, for more than 60 years. His grandparents originally purchased the paper in 1950 and his parents later bought it from them in the early 1990s. Pedley worked at the paper in high school and during two summers in col-

lege. “I definitely bleed ink, he said. “I’m very proud of the newspaper tradition in my family and glad that I could keep it going. He also had stints at The Daily Iowan and The Kalona News while in college.

Though he enjoys editorial writing most, Pedley’s handled nearly everything in the newspaper business. Be it sports, hard news, features or photography, there’s not much he hasn’t dealt with in some capacity or another. “Nick’s enthusiasm for the busi-

ness is infectious, said Ryan Harvey, publisher of the Chronicle. “For a young man his age, he is in the unique position of understanding community journalism. He’s an exceptionally gifted storyteller who I believe will fit in wonderfully in the newsroom in Hampton. Rockwell, and Sheffield. Pedley enjoys following baseball and fishing in his free time. A selfdescribed sports masochist, he’s a fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Seattle Mariners, and the Detroit Lions. He also enjoys spending time with family and friends and tailgating at Iowa Hawkeye football games. Though he’s only been in town for a little more than a week, Pedley said he’s looking forward to his new position in Hampton. “It seemed like a pretty proactive community when I was checking things out, and I think it will be good fit, he said. “I’m excited to be back in a small town again. Feel free to stop by the office or give Nick a call at 456-2585 ext. 131 or send him an email at nickpedley.map@gmail.com with any story suggestions. He’s eager to get to know the community and welcomes any suggestions.

April showers bring May flowers! Actually, if memory serves me right . . . it was April snow showers! It was May snow and rain showers. And now it’s June . . . and the rains still cometh! I’m not sure . . . but I thought as I was going down the road the other day I saw some folks building an ark! Probably just my imagination. Anyway . . . here on the work front its great to have an indoor job. Been busy as usual. We have three presses here, and two of them stay busy most of the time. (When not working on the newspaper.) I probably shouldn’t say this . . . but I really haven’t had anything break down in quite a while! Probably because of the good maintenance I do! Or not! I just need to take a day and clean, oil, grease, whatever it takes, to make sure things keep running. The way it looks, that will take place the second Thursday of next week! Home . . . not much going on there . . . again! Didn’t make it to Altoona, but talked to Little Lid on the phone. That’s just not the same as being there . . . but cir-

cumstances prevented it. Thought about taking the bike out for a spin. That’s all it took was to think about it . . . and it started to rain! I know I won’t melt . . . but I could shrink! Washing a vehicle is out of the question . . . unless you only care if it stays clean for up to 24 hours! There is a good aspect to the rain, though: I don’t have to water the flowers! Spent some time in the garage cleaning and polishing this and that. Don’t have to clean the two-wheeler as it hasn’t left the garage in a couple of weeks. Other than doing a little cleaning in the house, and ironing a few items . . . the week end disappeared rather quickly. Tried also to get a few odds and ends done at work on Saturday. That always makes Monday morning a little easier. And it’s also hard to break a habit that I did for many, many years. This week end I will go south to see the younger generation. Looking at the weather on my computer . . . I won’t be taking the motorcycle . . . and I will be driving a dirty car. In other words . . . yes, it’s forecast to rain . . . again! Be good, Kids+! It’s Showtime!

The men oh yes they were real men full of vinegar anyway awaiting the command from General one Tom Severe that is. He said, “Men no snafu today, put your game face on and don’t rub it off until hole #18. There were 18 soldiers of fortune, seeking that ultimate crown of Kings of the Course. Doug Siems, displaying everything his dad taught him, teamed up with his dad and Kim Wills to fire a sold 77 rounds of ammo. Doug used double clutching on his cart, Kim just always looked up after a shot and ol Ed right in there whistled his way around. Their win entitled them to free driving lessons from Dean Capasius on January 5 on the driving range‌.all hinges on whether they can talk Dean into it or not. Second place went to Don Greimann, Jim Saylor and Dennis Foss with a 79. Donnie the Greims catapulted his drives into the atmosphere high above the clouds and landed within 150 yards of every green. Now folks that’s not a lie because Barney told me so and he never fibs. Dennis Foss III was on his A game, well maybe a sold C but hey give him time, he’s a rookie. Jimmy one sailor Saylor type used a plum bob (sp) on every putt and they never missed. Third place and into the till were Cliff Cameron, Barney Dougherty and DeanO Peter with an 82. Wow that doesn’t say much for that group but hey they won money and big money at that. They won a free ride on the paddle boat, “DEANO of the Lakeâ€? that’s a ride around Dean0’s pond. Cliffy had the drive of the day as he put a dent in the bridge on number 8 and folks it’s only 20 yards from the tee box. He blamed it all on Barney for talking while he was swinging, well if Cliff only knew he ol Barn was laughing not talking. Dean managed to hit one over the creek on #6 and folks that’s nearly impossible... it is waaaaaaaaaay out of bounds. The second shot he almost hit into Larry Olk’s bedroom but was not out of bounds. Cliffy said they had a gimme put to par the hole‌well Bill Nolte clarified that and said it is a Bohach not a gimme anymore. It is so awesome, heartwarming and special to have something named after you by your peers. Jim (outta the field) Dorenkamp, Gary ol Nellie Nelson and Daveee old Levitt type finished with 84 hollow point golf balls to win nuttin. Levitt hated getting his cart dirty and sobbed all the way around, Nellie right in there had fish on the brain and Jimmy well he was counting the seeds to a hill. Tommy one Severe type combined with Duane (out the field) Dorenkamp and Billy Billiam Billy-Bob Nolte fired 85 rounds and just enough to capture them a trophy. The trophy is a replica of a guy hitting his ball into the water, another hitting into the trap and one more hitting out of bounds that was their game. There always must be a last place group, yup and old Dicky Dichard Brown, Bobby GI Shreckengost and Larry Lockinwood managed to fire 92 rounds, can you imagine. Their clubs were smoking from swinging so many times but they did have fun, I think! So ends one more chapter in the book of, “Gone with the Skill, on With the Fun.â€?

I shall exit via real Grayhound Bus as we are truly that gray and also white. It’s not what’s on top of your head it’s what inside. Well ours all seem to rattle a tad but then who cares we are vertical and moving. Severe told me that his Biology instructor told him Bowel was like A, E. I, O, or U. Cliffy said his nurse told him that Post Operative was a letter carrier. Ever wonder how your house can burn up and burn down at the same time, and how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same? Okay Bazinga is calling I have to answer the phone. The phone was Billy Boy Loeffelhardt wondering what Bazinga really means, I told him to call Dave Levitt.

West Fork FFA Hosts Ag Day for Elementary Children The West Fork FFA chapter held their annual Ag Day Wednesday, May 15. Kids from Sheffield and Rockwell elementary schools came and learned about agriculture and ag safety. This year’s Ag Day was centered around ag safety. Yes, agriculture is interesting but there are many dangers on a farm. Different stations taught the kids about agriculture, allowed them to interact with animals, and gave them opportunities to ask questions. The animal stations included beef and dairy cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, small animals, and chicks. Madison Steenhard from the West Fork FFA said, “I taught them safety, health, and what you get from cattle. It was a great learning experience for all the kids.

I reminded them to thank a farmer when they saw them.” There were also safety stations including ATV safety, lawn mower safety, tractor safety, and grain safety. It was a great day for the FFA members to teach the kids what they know and for the kids to learn and have fun. The kids also got to enjoy some yummy ice cream, made from dairy cows of course! Amy Symmens a teacher from the Sheffield elementary said, “I was impressed with the organization and the way the high school students taught the younger students about agriculture. We enjoyed the interaction with the animals and they also enjoyed the snacks. I hope they can do it again next year.”
