This fall marks Mid-America Christian University’s 70th anniversary as an institution of Christian higher education. Many things have changed since 1953 – such as our name, our location, and our leadership.

What has not changed is our commitment to train leaders for ministry in the Church of God (Anderson, IN) and in schools, businesses, nonprofits, and communities. We prepare people to do great things for God and His Kingdom!

When Max Gaulke told his wife Isabelle he would start a Bible school in the Fall of 1953, only God knew how many lives would be impacted. Thousands of alumni in Houston and Oklahoma City experienced transformation in class, chapel, residence halls, and on courts and fields. Our stories span time and distance, but our work as Evangels remains the same as we spread the good news of Christ wherever we go.

At MACU, we honor the saints on whose shoulders we stand. We hope you will join us this fall in Houston and Oklahoma City for special celebrations and for Homecoming in November. We invite you to participate in honoring our past and strengthening our future by joining one of our 70th anniversary giving clubs.

Throughout this past year, many people have been praying fervently about God’s vision for our future! What will our University look like on our 75th anniversary? How will we

impact the world for Christ over the next 30 years when we will celebrate our centennial?

We invite you to join us in dreaming God’s dreams. If you find yourself asking, “Wouldn’t it be great if...?”, we invite you to share your ideas by emailing wibgi@macu.edu. Over the coming months, we will be sharing dreams for reaching new students, adding new programs, building new facilities, and endowing scholarship funds for future generations.

But we need your help. Please consider making a financial gift this fall. Please pray about including MACU in your estate planning. Please pray for our students and ask God how you can give your time, talent, and support to bless students and leave a legacy.

We invite you to be a part of MACU both in-person and online. Visit our campus and our website (www.macu. edu) to see the GREAT THINGS God is doing. Watch chapel online (www.macu.edu/chapel) or watch livestreams of our amazing athletic teams (www.macuathletics.com). Lives are being changed and students are being prepared to follow God’s call upon their lives, just as we have experienced for the past 70 years… and we pray the best is yet to come!

3 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

COMMENCEMENT 2023

Nearly 500 students made up the Class of 2023 in MACU’s historic seventieth Commencement Ceremony held downtown at the Oklahoma City Convention Center.

MACU celebrated the achievements of close to 500 graduates during the 2023 Commencement on May 6 at the Oklahoma City Convention Center.

Peter Greer, President and CEO of HOPE International, delivered the keynote address. In his speech, Greer encouraged graduates to remember: “Your motivation matters.”

Greer said when a person centers around God instead of themselves, they start to love unconditionally, begin to

truly listen, and learn to respond with compassion.

During the ceremony, an honorary Doctor of Divinity was also given to Vice President for University Advancement Rev. Steve Seaton, who retired from MACU this summer.

President Phil Greenwald expressed pride in the Class of 2023, whose graduating year coincides with the University’s seventieth anniversary.

“Our graduates are the culmination of MACU’s 70-year mission to impact the world for God’s glory,” said Greenwald. “I am so excited to see where the Lord leads them in this exciting new chapter in their lives.”

MACU SERVES

This Summer, our students lived out the University’s mission in their work serving and ministering all across the world.

Founded in Houston in 1953, Mid-America Christian University’s rich heritage includes thousands of alumni from Gulf Coast Bible College and MidAmerica Bible College. Upon moving to Oklahoma City in 1985, we continued to train thousands more students both on campus and online. Today, we serve over 2,700 students every year through 26 degrees and more than 157 program options. Our graduates carry the torch of knowledge and faith, impacting communities far and wide.

The 70th anniversary marks a testament to MACU’s unwavering dedication to our mission, expanding its programs to meet the dynamic demands of the modern world. Throughout the past seven decades, our University has remained deeply committed to our core values – recognizing the authority of Scripture and the Lordship of Christ in all that we say and do.

Amidst celebrations and reflections of our history, the University looks towards the future, ready to continue the work of preparing people to do great things for God and His Kingdom!

A Living Legacy

As a member of 1953’s Pioneer Class, Mary Ruth Collins has been a part of the last 70 years of this University’s great history.

It was the summer of 1953, and young Mary Ruth Collins had a decision to make.

She had already been accepted into Southwest Texas State Teachers College (present-day Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas, where her two older sisters graduated. But after hearing about a brand-new Bible college set to open its doors in Houston, she felt the unmistakable hand of God guiding her there.

“I really sensed that was where God wanted me to be,” Collins recalled. She withdrew from San Marcos and applied at the newly-formed South Texas Bible Institute, where she was accepted as a member of what has lovingly become known as the “Pioneer Class” – the first 26 students to ever attend the institution.

Studying Christian Education, Collins also made her mark on the school as a member of the first girls’ musical group, the Gospel Echoes Ladies Choir.

MID-AMERICAN / 70th ANNIVERSARY EDITION 12
ALUMNI FOCUS PHOTOS PROVIDED WRITER: WHITNEY KNIGHT

She fell in love with fellow student Paul Kendall, a member of the boys’ group Kings Four, and went on to marry and start a family with him.

The institute would continue to be a part of their family’s life for generations: their sons, Gary and Brad, both attended Gulf Coast Bible College, where they met their future wives. Two of the Kendall grandchildren, Jeremy and Luke, went on to graduate from MACU.

“I don’t know where I would be today without this institution,” said Collins. “It became my foundation. I had grown up in a Christian family, so I loved the Lord from the time I was a little girl. But when I came to the college, I really learned more about sanctification and tried to bring my life in line with more of a biblical life. The Bible courses, the professors I had – they made the difference in my life as I began to grow and I believe my life took on a totally different trajectory because of my being there.”

Collins said she is incredibly blessed to be a part of the institution’s 70-year history.

“I am so thrilled with what the University is doing now,” Collins said.

“This is an amazing heritage. When I think of that tiny little campus that was South Texas Bible Institute and what it is today as Mid-America Christian University, I just know that only God could do this. To Him be all the glory.”

Seaton Retires

After nearly two decades of service as a professor, mentor, and disciple, Rev. Dr. Steve Seaton, Vice President for University Advancement, retired this summer.

From the bustling dormitories of MACU’s residence halls to the batting cages of the O’Brien athletic facility, one would be hard-pressed to find an aspect of the campus that hasn’t been directly impacted by Steve Seaton.

Since coming to MACU nearly 20 years ago, Seaton has played a critical role in fundraising and organizing for many major projects on the MACU campus – but it is his role as a teacher, mentor, and disciple that has made the greatest impact of all.

“God has blessed me with a deeply rewarding career,” Seaton said. “I have had the opportunity to meet, develop relationships with, and even disciple many of the young men and women at MACU. It has been a privilege to help students attend and stay in school through scholarships, and to have played a role in shaping the campus’s growth over the years to give them the best possible experience at MACU.”

After serving as an ordained Church of God pastor for 22 years, Seaton joined MACU in 2004 as a professor in the School of Ministry. He came with a vision to develop a Practicum in Pastoral Care program. That program is thriving today, giving first-hand experience in local hospitals to nearly 300 students so far.

“Steve is truly a man of God’s own heart,” said President Phil Greenwald. “Each and every one of us here knows how deeply he impacts our campus on a daily basis. The work he does is in fundraising, but his mission is to pour into the lives of our students on a daily basis. Thousands upon thousands of students and alumni have been changed through Steve’s ministry.”

In his retirement, Steve Seaton looks forward to spending time with his wife, Rhonda, their children, and their grandchildren.

We are deeply grateful to Steve and everything he has done for MACU students over the years!

Music Electives Return

Staying true to our roots, MACU is bringing back music courses.

There is much to be excited about leading up to the first day of classes, but one thing in particular is the reintroduction of music curriculum being offered to students.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer the opportunity for students to take music classes as a part of their program, as well as a creative outlet that will help them serve,” said College of Arts and Sciences Dean Esther Rehbein.

Over the last 70 years, music has been a core part of our institution’s culture and our students’ experiences. It is that

rich history – coupled with increased student interest – that led University faculty and leadership to breathe new life into the study of music.

Christian Worship, Basic Musicianship, and Music Appreciation and Fine Arts are three classes set to be offered.

“Bringing back music enriches the liberal arts core, allowing students a more complete education,” said Dr. Coleman Patterson, a faculty member advocating for this proposal.

SOCK IT TO ‘EM!

Students in the MACU School of Business collected socks to break a Guinness World Record and help Oklahomans in need.

Our business students worked together to raise money in order to purchase and collect socks as a part of their goal to set a new Guinness World Record.

More than 5,000 socks were gathered to create the “World’s Largest Sock Word” world record by spelling out “MACU.” Afterwards, the socks were distributed to charities, churches, and shelters across the OKC metro.

Spring graduate Ryan Reed served as the initiative’s project manager.

“The project gave us all real life experience with implementing strategic management,” Reed said. “Most importantly, it provided those in need with socks during the cold Oklahoma Winter.”

Campus Updates

In January, our campus store was converted into Evangel Corner, a Starbucks-serving coffee shop that’s become a centerpiece of the University. Evangel Corner is also your one-stop-shop for Evangel merch, including the new “Collections” line launching this Fall!

Another recent addition to campus is The Scraper Center, a counseling center named after First Lady Stephanie Greenwald’s parents. The Scraper Center provides students with free counseling and support while also serving as a training ground for graduate students in MACU’s Counseling Program.

We also invite you to join us in Café 14:12 and experience our new “HOME” mural. It’s the first of four art pieces dedicated to our ENDS Policies, which encompass our mission and vision. This mural reflects our commitment to ensuring that students have a greater awareness of local and global issues and reflects the various cultures, traditions, landmarks, and places our students call “HOME.”

1-

Open every weekday, Evangel Corner serves smiles and Starbucks to our students, employees, and guests while providing a cozy atmosphere.

The Scraper Center is a 1600-squarefoot counseling center located on the second floor of Fozard Hall. The Scraper Center provides free mental health services for MACU students.

Designed with the home cultures of MACU students in mind, the “HOME” mural is the first of four art pieces to be featured on campus. Visit www.macu. edu/mural to learn more.
