Former Major League player Cody Decker says anti-Semitism is ‘rampant’ in pro baseball Former pro baseball player Cody Decker said that anti-Semitism is “rampant throughout baseball” and that an Oakland Athletics coach should be suspended for making a Nazi salute after a game. Decker, who played briefly for the San Diego Padres and for Israel’s national team in the World Baseball Classic, spoke candidly on the topic with TMZ Sports on Aug. 8. He detailed several instances over the course of his career in which he was singled out for being Jewish and called Jewish slurs by fans and teammates. Decker said that while playing a minor league game against the Frisco Rough Riders in Texas, several members of the opposing team called him and fellow Jewish teammate Nate Freiman “kikes.” He also said he was fired from a team the day after being called into a coach’s office to “explain my Judaism to him because he was born again Christian.” And in 2012, Decker said he was at a bar with teammates when a group of girls asked him to leave the table when they found out he was Jewish. The talk was spurred by a recent incident involving Oakland A’s bench coach Ryan Christenson, who was widely criticized for making a Nazi salute — he claims “unintentionally” — after a recent game against the Texas Rangers. “In the world today of Covid, I adapted our elbow bump, which we do after wins, to create some distance with the players,” Christenson said in a statement last week. “My gesture unintentionally resulted in a racist and horrible salute that I do not believe in. What I did is unacceptable and I deeply apologize.” Decker said he accepted Christenson’s apology but that he should be educated on the issue and suspended nonetheless. “Actions have consequences. That’s not cancel culture, that’s life,” Decker said. Decker took issue with the A’s response for saying it “looked like a Nazi salute.” “No, he did a Nazi salute. He did a Nazi salute twice,” Decker said. “Let’s

Israeli protesters in Washington call on Netanyahu to resign Protesters outside the Israeli Embassy call for the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Aug. 9.
By Eric Schucht Staff Writer
F
orty-five people gathered outside the Embassy of Israel in Washington on Aug. 9 to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption. “It’s scary for me because I’m not sure that the Israel that I know will still be existing when we want to go back,” said Yoni Charash, an Israeli who has lived in the United States for three years. “Bibi is corrupting everything. He’s ruining the country. He’s not thinking about 4

us, the civilians.” Bibi is Netanyahu’s nickname. Charash is the coordinator of the Washington demonstration, one of six in the United States organized by the UnXeptable movement. The demonstrations, in New York City, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco, were held to support the larger protests against Netanyahu in Israel, which have been ongoing for weeks. Turnout for a protest outside the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem on Aug. 8 was reported at 15,000. Some put the number as high as 32,000. In Washington, protesters waved signs reading “Game over Bibi” and chanted “No doubt, Bibi out” and “We all
live in an expensive submarine” in reference to a Beatles song. Yehuda Lukacs, of Alexandria, attended the protest. An Israeli who has lived in the United States for more than 30 years, Lukacs said Israelis are angry at Netanyahu, who is on trial for bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Netanyahu is alleged to have received lavish gifts from billionaire friends, including cigars and champagne. He’s also accused of exchanging regulatory favors with media moguls for positive coverage. Netanyahu, who heads the right-wing Likud party, was sworn in for a fifth term as prime minister in May. That same month his trial began, but has since been

postponed until January due to the coronavirus pandemic, Politico reported. Lukacs said Netanyahu should resign, as “it is impossible that he can be both a prime minister and the defendant in a trial.” “Many Israelis [are] feeling that the democracy in Israel is slipping away,” Lukacs continued. “And therefore, we need to protect our future and the future of the next generation. So that’s what
this demonstration is all about.” Lukacs said protesters are also upset due to the government’s response to the pandemic and Israel’s related economic crisis. Coronavirus cases in Israel have surpassed 82,000, with 592 deaths as of Aug. 8, according to Al Jazeera. Unemployment has risen to more than 20 percent. Lukacs added that many of the demonstrators are also opposed to the proposed annexation of parts of the
West Bank. Motti Tadmor, of Potomac, has lived in the United States for 15 years. He said if Netanyahu is innocent, as he claims, then he should stand trial and prove it. He also pushed back against those who have criticized anti-Netanyahu protests. “People like myself, who served in the army, who gave their best lives to Israel, are being called traitors or losers, and we’re nothing but people who love
Israel and care about it,” Tadmor said. “The way that the prime minister is portraying everybody who thinks differently from him is as traitors, as people who are enemies. And it’s just frustrating. He gave a lot of years to this country. We appreciate that. It’s time for him to get up and leave. Do the right thing. Stand trial.” WJW eschucht@midatlanticmedia.com @EricSchucht

CONSIDERING HOMESCHOOLING? This mom has some tips. By Rachel Kohn Special to WJW
W
hen Stephanie Frumkin discusses homeschooling as an option for families in her role as an education consultant, it is not only as a mom with experience homeschooling two children during their elementary school years. The Kemp Mill resident is also a former elementary school teacher with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in leadership in teaching and school administration. Frumkin never planned on homeschooling her kids. “In my mind, I was very much in that traditional school model,” she said. “But I found that school was not working for my children. One of my kids was a very much out-of-the-box learner, so I needed to find something alternative for that child.” She eventually moved her younger child to homeschooling because not only was it working so well for the oldest, but the younger sibling wanted in on the experiences they were sharing. “I really did note I was so involved in one child’s education and I wasn’t involved in the other and it was kind of an uneven family dynamic, so we just decided to homeschool both of them at a certain point.” Frumkin offered the following advice for families exploring the idea of homeschooling for the first time:
Don’t focus on trying to make homeschooling like conventional school.
Frumkin’s academic training and work experience came in handy as a homeschooling mom, but she also found it a challenge to break free of the mindset of a classroom teacher. “I had to unlearn certain things, and learn new things,” she said. “This idea of ‘school at home’ … being like trying to take what would normally be in a traditional classroom and moving into the home environment” is not a path she recommends. Take school hours, for instance. If a child is dead to the world in the morning and full of energy in the afternoon, there is no universal law that demands they sit at attention from 8 a.m. onward. Make school hours work for them (and for you). And tests? “Because you’re working so closely with your kids on a daily basis, I see no need for tests,” said Frumkin. If you’re working with 12 kids, it might be different, she joked, but in her case tests did not feel like a necessity — so they were out.
Connect with the community.
Frumkin recently started a Facebook group called Exploring Jewish Homeschooling (MoCo). With more than 180 members, it has drawn both experienced homeschoolers and people contemplating the option 6

Jack Stratton, 6, reviews math problems with his mom, Teresa. for the coming school year. But her group is not a novelty. “There’s lots of homeschooling groups out there,” said Frumkin. “There are a lot that are local, so I would search in your area.” There are also many niche groups, she added: gifted students, nature lovers, students looking for a Jewish education. Members of the homeschooling community can also direct families to resources such as online secular and Judaic classes for children and pre-packaged curriculums for home use (although Frumkin recommends personalizing the latter if you use them).
Individualization is key.
In a traditional school setting, Frumkin said, “It’s, ‘Here’s your curriculum, that’s what you get,’ and you follow it in more or less lockstep with other teachers of that grade.” Homeschooling offers freedom and flexibility missing from that top-down setting, and she takes advantage of it. “You can look at each individual child and their learning style … and really tailor it to their individual needs,” she explained. She not only incorporates her children’s interests as vehicles for engaging classwork and activities, but considers what is interesting to her so she can enjoy the homeschooling experience as well.
Familiarize yourself with state and county requirements.
Can you hire someone to homeschool your kids? “I hear
U.S. Air Force photo by Kemberly Groue
that kind of question a lot these days,” said Frumkin. “In Maryland, there are laws that give specific guidelines for homeschooling, and you have to oversee and be responsible for your child’s education,” she said. “That doesn’t mean you can’t hire someone to do it, but you can’t hire someone to totally take over it and not be involved.” You also can’t just decide to homeschool in Maryland or Virginia without filing paperwork with local education officials or joining a state-approved homeschooling “umbrella group.” The Coalition for Responsible Homeschooling Education shares state-by-state requirements on its website, responsiblehomeschooling.org.
It’s not for everyone, but don’t assume it’s not for you.
Homeschooling may not be a fit for every parent — but, in a way, every parent is already homeschooling, said Frumkin. “I think people are a lot more involved than they realize in their kids’ education. You play music with them, you read books to them,” she explained. “There’s definitely things that were challenging,” she added, “but overall it was a very positive experience for our family and something I never imagined to be our lives.” WJW emailrachelkohn@gmail.com @RachelKTweets

Pollin wanted to get to the root of societal problems By Elisa Posner WJW Intern

“They always knew that the
osh Weinberg knew Irene Pollin from a young age. His father, Rabbi Joseph P. Weinberg, was senior rabbi of Washington Hebrew Congregation in the 1980s and 1990s, and Pollin was a member there. Josh Weinberg said Pollin was interested in getting to the root of societal problems, solving those problems and “being humble after solving them.” Pollin, former co-owner of the Washington Wizards and Capitals and Mystics, died in Amherst, Mass., on July 28. She was 96. Pollin was known for her philanthropy, including her involvement with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Yachad, which works to preserve affordable homes and revitalize neighborhoods in the Washington area.
important thing was to look out for the whole community.” —Josh Weinberg
“She was interested in asking all kinds of questions, wanting to know what made people tick, and what kept them ticking,” Weinberg said. Weinberg, a member of the Yachad board, said he, Irene Pollin and her husband, Abe Pollin, worked together on Yachad projects. As the Pollins developed real estate in the Washington area, they worked with Yachad to ensure the residents who already lived in those areas
were not left out of the redevelopment process. Weinberg said that the Pollins were deeply concerned with the well-being of the residents who already lived in the areas they sought to redevelop. “They always knew that the important thing was to look out for the whole community,” he said. “They were these incredible humanitarians who also happened to be incredibly smart business people.” Two of the couple’s four children died from a heart condition. Irene Pollin, who was also a psychotherapist, founded Sister to Sister: the Women’s Heart Health Foundation. Abe Pollin died in 2009. Irene Pollin is survived by her children Robert (Sigrid) and James; grandchildren, Emma Grock (Paul) and Hannah Pollin-Galay (Asaf); great-grandchildren, Ruth, Leah and Leila; and niece and nephew, Howard Goldstein (Jill Schick) and Ilene Ellenbogen. Walk to Israel participants to help campus organization By Eric Schucht Staff Writer

S
upporters of the campus outreach organization Meor D.C. are trying a new way to raise funds. They’re walking to Israel. Well, they’re walking or running to Israel in spirit, having promised to put in 100 miles each within 30 days. “I’ve been walking more than I ever have,” said Rabbi Yosef Edelstein, the director of Meor D.C. and one of eight on the team supporting his organization. As of Aug. 11, he’s walked 34 miles. Walk to Israel is the creation of the international Jewish organization Olami. The project addresses three activities halted by the coronavirus pandemic: fundraising, trips to Israel and face-toface gatherings, according to Michal Nordmann, Olami’s director of marketing. “There’s no community centers,” Nordmann said. “There was no going to shul. There’s no college campuses in the same way. So how do you keep the community
feeling like a community? So we came up with this idea. If we can’t fly to Israel, then we can walk there.” Nordmann said the goal averages out to four miles a day or 10,000 steps. The
30-day stretch was chosen to build an exercise habit. Walk for Israel kicked off on Aug. 2 and has raised more than $2 million for participating organizations, Nordmann said.
Meor D.C.’s team has committed to walk 715 miles collectively and raise $7,500. As of Aug. 11, they had walked 189 miles and raised $744. Meor is based at George Washington University in the District. Edelstein said he wants to use the money his team raises to send books on inspiration, meditation and mindfulness to Jewish students. To do that, he’s looking for additional runners. “We have a lot of quality on the team, now we want to expand the quantity. So people should jump on,” Edelstein said. Madeleine Tasini is a runner on Meor D.C.’s team. Now living in Florida, she attended Meor D.C. Shabbat dinners while she was studying at American University. She figures she can walk to Israel from anywhere. “I just wanted to exercise, and it’s hard to get out during the pandemic. So it’s a way to get out of the house,” Tasini said. Q & A With Dr. Naor Bar-Zeev
‘A vaccine is not the be all or end all’ By Carolyn Conte
W
What are your thoughts on the states’ response to safety concerns?
It’s difficult to tell one is right and one is wrong. States are doing the best they can to optimize the response. The critical issue is contact tracking, tracing and isolation. And for the public, they need to be wearing masks when out.
What have you learned about a possible vaccine?
I’m not doing any direct work with development. I work on distribution once it is available. Once the vaccine is available there will be an issue of making it available in large enough numbers to vaccinate everybody. There will be a high level of manufacturing [but] if we wait until [enough are ready] we will lose even more people. We’ll be lucky if we have 2 billion doses by the end of 2021. Countries will have to sort how to distribute it and once that decision is made, decide on individual locations. And then they have to decide a good mechanism of delivery to children, or what about high-risk communities? They will have to be engaged in the discussion, too. The vaccine has to be safe for the community. Whether that means making it available to shuls or schools or the local town hall. Logistically, we don’t want people congregating. Whether it’s possible or feasible is one thing, but the ideal would be a shot 8

hen will we have a vaccine for COVID-19? How effective will it be? Naor Bar-Zeev, a n associate professor of international health and vaccine science and deputy director of the International Vaccine Access Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a pediatric infectious disease physician and statistical epidemiologist, spoke about vaccine development and the country’s response to the pandemic. This interview has been condensed. delivered in the mail. But we’re not quite there. We have to design delivery with the communities. We have to make sure the vaccine is safe itself, too, and test the surveillance of that [to keep an eye on results]. And it will have to be adaptive to where the hot spots [of breakouts] are.
At the soonest, when do you predict a vaccine will be available to the U.S. population?
We have [vaccines], but they just need to be proven effective. That means a wide trial with all ages. Then it goes through licensing after all the data is collected. Then it can be manufactured. Realistically, it is hard to pinpoint, but it is unlikely that you can get one by the end of 2020. Maybe, for health care workers, by 2021.
Do you believe there will have to be a difference in dosages for older adults?
The main issue is that older adults have the most responsive immune system. What is generally not safe may be needed to be effective for older adults. It would be wonderful to have one vaccine, but it’s possible we will need different ones for older adults, or more frequent dosages. We also don’t know how long the vaccine’s effect could last, and if that could be different for different ages. If it wanes
and we’re back to where we started, that would be no good.
How reliable are the current tests on chimpanzees for predicting whether it will work on humans?
It is a necessary step. If it’s safe to one animal similar to humans, meaning primates, it’s a good indication to move it to human trials. Then we need to demonstrate on humans that it’s safe and efficacious. The more it’s evaluated, the more I will be comfortable to say it’s safe. There’s only been 1,500 people vaccinated so far. We need many more people before I can say something is safe. So we’ll increase the number again soon; the next trials will vaccinate 30,000 each. The worst thing is if [we went straight to testing on] people to cut corners and that causes harm. That would be terrible for all vaccines, because people’s trust in vaccines would go down.
What will that next phase of testing look like?
So we break it into Phase 1, 2 and 3. Before Phase 1 of human trials, you have a whole bunch of experiments, then to animal testing. We haven’t seen the results of Phase 2 yet, but are expecting to move to 3 soon. At the end of Phase 3, we can roll out the vaccines and begin a Phase 4. But when we get there, it also raises an ethical concern: What if the vaccine kills one in a million?
Would you still give it to children? These are not black and white questions, but there is a lot to consider.
What other challenges and questions like that must we consider?
So I already told you about distribution: who will get it first and how do we distribute it. Equity means everyone will be protected equally. But also, what if we have 1 million doses and people over age 50 require two? And how are we affording it? And what if 70 percent is efficacious, or even just 50 percent? Do we still spend the money on it? And what if there is no other option for a long time? The Rotary [International] vaccine in the ‘90s caused a condition in children, but it took 10 years for a new vaccine to come around. You have these questions of what is practical versus the specifics of it. Above all, though, people must remember: A vaccine is not the be all or end all. It won’t make coronavirus go away. Obviously, we still need a vaccine. But, really, the idea of social distancing, washing your hands, being careful — this will still be crucial. South Philadelphia Shtiebel closes prayer space, looks ahead By Jesse Bernstein
T
he Philadelphia synagogue founded a year ago by Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah’s former rabbanit is leaving its prayer space. It’s not the end of the world, said Rabbanit Dasi Fruchter, of the South Philadelphia Shtiebel. It was simple financial sense for the small congregation, which doesn’t have plans to meet in a small indoor space any time soon. “Heartbreaking” as it is, Fruchter said, the congregation had already outgrown the space. I’m really grateful that we were able to make a move,” she said. In the meantime, congregants will continue daily prayer and learning sessions, with the occasional outdoor, socially distanced event at nearby Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School. A year ago, the South Philadelphia Shtiebel was celebrating its first Kabbalat Shabbat, attended by
about 100 people on a day that was about 100 degrees. Over the course of the year, the congregation grew as the shtiebel offered more classes and created greater opportunity for engagement. Much of it was centered at the physical space. Frustrating as it is to lose the space, Fruchter said, it simply didn’t make sense to keep paying rent. “This,” she said, “is not going anywhere. COVID-19 is here.” Indeed, the pandemic has left its mark on the congregation. Fruchter herself is recovering from COVID-19. But offering classes on Daf Yomi and Pirkei Avot, along with the occasional lecture, has enticed many that may have once wished to stay at home. Now, they can do both. The shtiebel has also held a few outdoor services at Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School, a practice that Fruchter hopes to continue as the pandemic endures. “We commit,” she said, “to continuing to doing what we do well, which is helping people connect and helping
people bring love into the world, and connect with Torah and Judaism.” And though the shtiebel’s space will no longer belong to the shtiebel, it will belong to some “shtieblers,” as Fruchter calls them. Orrin Leeb and Bryan Kravitz, co-owners of Philly Typewriter, will take over the space within a year. Their store, which sells and repairs typewriters, is now a few blocks away from the shtiebel. Kravitz, who was married to his wife by Fruchter, said that he and Leeb were looking around for a new space when Fruchter reached out to them with a proposal a few weeks ago. “It was very, very, very fortuitous this all happened,” Kravitz said. It’s “a perfect move, for us,” Leeb added. WJW Jesse Bernstein is a writer for the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent, an affiliated publication of Washington Jewish Week.

How do you approach caring for dogs?
How did you make that shift from an office job to this business?
By Anna Lippe Special to WJW

att Oberman has always loved dogs. He turned that passion for furry friends into a business: Bone Voyage, a dog walking and cage-free boarding service in Montgomery County. A graphic designer and photographer by trade, Oberman, 45, worked in the corporate space for years. He’s glad to have left that dog-eat-dog world behind.

What do you love most about dogs?
I love the fact that they ask for so little in return, and the fact that the bond that you create with a dog is tight. It’s fantastic. They let you forget about everything else that’s going on in the world. I get to spend my days with these beautiful, friendly dogs. People laugh when you tell them that you’re a dog walker, but I’ve never been so happy. I can’t tell you how many times I told myself, “I can’t
When I worked in corporate America, I would come home from work and I’d be in a terrible mood. I wouldn’t want to go to work. I would find myself at work just going online and looking at dogs. My wife is from Gaithersburg and we moved to Maryland about three years ago. And when we first moved here, I told her, “There’s no way I’m going back to corporate America. I can’t. It’s taken years off my life.” I took a job as a dog walker. And I was like, “Where has this been my whole life? This is just amazing.” I worked and walked for somebody for a little over a year before I started my own business. The actual act of starting a business takes a little bit of grunt work. I’m lucky because I’m a graphic artist and I made all my own marketing material. If I see somebody with a dog, I just start talking to them. It’s not even to drum up my business, it’s just because I like their dog.
What is cage-free boarding?
It’s like an Airbnb for dogs. My house is completely open to them. As long as the dog is potty trained and up to date on shots and gets along with my dog. I have a fenced-in backyard. I have water stations throughout the house. Feeding time is always supervised. Dogs can sleep wherever they want. I’ve had dogs sleep in bed with us. I always send multiple texts throughout the day with pictures and updates. You have to love these dogs like they’re your own. I also provide peace of mind when boarding people’s dogs. I can’t tell you how often customers tell me how much more they were able to enjoy their vacation knowing their dog was well taken care of.
Are you involved in the Jewish community?
We belong to Temple Beth Ami. Both my daughters go to the Hebrew school. I think instilling a sense of Judaism into your kids is important. You have to find that balance of letting them explore and enjoying it by themselves at times, but also guiding them along the way.

For somebody to trust you with their dog is a really big deal. And I approach every dog as if it were my own. I am a neurotic dog owner and I don’t think that’s a bad thing because I want what’s best for my animal and therefore whenever I walk someone else’s dog, I’m their advocate. I want what’s best for that dog. Every dog is different. There’s a lot of responsibility that goes into this. After every walk, I send the customer notes and photos. I enjoy taking adorable pictures of dogs because they’re so expressive. It is literally like a daycare.
Oberman worked in the corporate space for years. He’s glad to have left that dog-eat-dog world behind.
We celebrated my dog’s Bark Mitzvah. When he turned 13, I ordered a little tallis and yarmulke for him on Amazon. I don’t want to say he enjoyed it, but he didn’t put up a fight.
Do you have any advice for people looking to follow their passion?
I would absolutely encourage anybody to start doing what they love, but also be smart about it. Don’t just quit your job with no money in the bank and pretend like this is a movie where everything ends great. You need to be smart and think about
the future. I am extremely lucky that my wife wants me to be happy and I absolutely could not have done this without her. If you honestly think that you could do a better job than what’s out there, then you should give it a try. You need to find something that separates yourself from everybody else. If you find something that you love to do, you just become happy. WJW Anna Lippe is a Washington-based writer.

Why Ilhan Omar’s primary became the Jewish community’s most watched pre-November vote By Gabe Friedman

Committee, and Lacy Clay, a Missouri congressman whose challenger, Cori Bush, had expressed support for the BDS movement. The dynamics of the Minnesota primary are different in that the challenger, not the incumbent, is seen as friendlier to Israel. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed Omar, meaning that anyone providing resources to her opponent would be working against the Democratic leadership, a potentially costly move. Some Democratic and nonpartisan Israel advocacy
the Star Tribune reported. Omar raised slightly over $1 million in each of those periods. Melton-Meaux donors included NORPAC and Pro-Israel America, two political action committees that tend to lean right on Israel policy. Those groups have been critical of Omar because of her comments about Israel. In 2012, before joining Congress, she tweeted that Israel “hypnotized the world.” As a new member of Congress, with the tweet under renewed scrutiny, she
o matter what the results of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s primary on Tuesday, one thing is clear: Some Jewish voters in Minnesota and across the country will be deeply disappointed. Omar (D-Minn.) has the support of some local and progressive Jews who are excited about supporting a member of “The Squad,” a quartet of prominent progressive first-term congresswomen that also includes Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib. But Omar — who represents Minnesota’s 5th District, which includes Minneapolis — has repeatedly angered a large segment of the pro-Israel community and other Jewish voters with comments that critics say promote anti-Semitic tropes about American Jews and Jewish influence on politics. Her challenger, Antone Melton-Meaux, describes himself as a pro-Israel progressive and has made Omar’s comments on Israel a key part of his campaign. He has drawn major support from national donors in recent months as a spate of high-profile congressional primary upsets have emboldened those who would like to see Omar serve only one term. Polls have shown Omar with a commanding lead. An upset would demonstrate how damaging and divisive Omar’s Israel narrative has become — but an Omar victory would add another signal Rep. “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” she wrote in a tweet that raised eyebrows. gressional trip, they were denied entry. A 2017 Israeli law entitles the state to deny entry to boycott Israel activists. It was the first time that the Jewish state refused to allow in members of Congress. Several people in Omar’s district have since said that the congresswoman began a dialogue with the Jewish community in the wake of the controversy but failed to see it through. Local Jews said that they were not assured by a meeting she held with them about her 2012 tweet, before her AIPAC comments. “She didn’t apologize for the tweet, she didn’t say she would take it down and she tried to put it in the context of the Gaza dispute, but it was unsatisfactory from our standpoint, from my standpoint, that she didn’t seem to recognize the seriousness of the trope,” State Sen. Ron Latz said. Rhona Shwaid, a Minneapolis attorney and MeltonMeaux supporter who met with Omar and a group of local Jews following the AIPAC comments, echoed that sentiment. “She was nice in the meeting and commented that ‘this is the beginning of a conversation,’” Shwaid told Jewish Insider. “But we never heard back from her, and after that she made additional comments that were questionable and some of her votes have been questionable.” Avi Olitzky, a local rabbi who has met with Omar

Many took her words to mean that Omar believed AIPAC pays American politicians to be pro-Israel. The comments earned her national rebuke, including from many of her Democratic colleagues. In a subsequent op-ed for The Washington Post, Omar defended her critiques of Israel as calling for a more “balanced” policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but she also called Israel the “historical homeland” of Jews. But when she and Tlaib tried to visit Israel on a con-

We need a representative in Congress who both hears and listens to us — someone who is willing to absorb our concerns and advocate for us in Congress.” Olitzky said later that he was “beyond dismayed” by an Omar mailer that called out three Jewish donors to Melton-Meaux’s campaign — and no one else. Melton-Meaux, a mediation lawyer, has caught the eye of the Jewish community in other ways. Following law school, he earned a master’s degree in theology, Hebrew and preaching at the Union Theological Seminary, Jewish Insider reported. He also worked at a senior living center, The New Jewish Home in New York City, and delivered a d’var Torah at a 2012 Jewish Community Relations Council meeting in St. Paul. Omar, who is Muslim, is the first Somali American in Congress and the first Black woman to represent Minnesota in the House. She has local liberal Jewish support, including that of the activist group Jewish Community Action. “I value the close relationship I have with leaders throughout the 5th District, including members of the Jewish community,” Omar said in 2019. “I look forward to continuing a relationship based on open dialogue, mutual respect, and combating hatred and intolerance towards all persecuted communities.” WJW —JTA News and Features

Promoting e-commerce growth in Israel T
he novel coronavirus is testing our resources and creativity in ways we never imagined. We look to government for support; we turn to communal social service organizations for assistance; we look to our scientific and medical community for innovation and answers; we look to our schools for creative educational approaches; and we look to one another for patience and understanding. Each of these relationships calls on a sense of mutuality — we are all in this together, so let’s work together to solve the problem. Governments around the world have tried various approaches. Most include a financial infusion designed to help newly unemployed citizens through difficult economic times. In Israel, for example, the government has distributed the equivalent of $300 million to Israeli families. That has been a significant investment, and more will be needed. But is money alone enough? Israeli venture capitalist Michael Eisenberg has proposed a different approach, which he argues will allow the government to provide needed relief support, while at the same time upgrade what he sees as Israel’s faltering e-commerce platform. In a recent series of tweets, Eisenberg suggested that the Israeli government support for pandemic-burdened citizens be in the form of vouchers instead of cash, and that the vouchers be tied to e-commerce activity, like online shopping. His goal is to promote more local e-commerce activity and, through competition, help build Israel’s e-commerce infrastructure and competitive edge. “The world operates on incentives,” said Eisenberg, managing partner at the Tel Aviv-based Aleph Venture Capital. “If you
give people money, they’ll stay at home. But if you give them money that they have to spend, they’ll spend it. And therefore proper channeling of money can jumpstart the entire economy.” Eisenberg asserts that the e-commerce experience in Israel is lagging: “User experience is poor, as is customer service and logistics.” He posits that a little competition, spurred by government-sponsored relief vouchers, will help improve e-commerce and encourage brick-and-mortar stores to elevate their game and compete by investing in e-commerce technology. It will also help Israel wean itself from reliance on U.S. and Chinese online markets. “The citizens of Israel are in need of jobs and investment in the infrastructure of the future,” Eisenberg tweeted. “Stop handing out money and start investing in the future — the future of business, the future of infrastructure, and the future of employment. It is happening with or without us. We will be better off taking part in the game.” We think Eisenberg’s idea is worth exploring. His voucher suggestion could benefit those in need, help build business opportunity for those who innovate, and ultimately bring value to consumers and growth to the economy. And the idea of government money doing a form of “double duty” by helping those in need and promoting innovation and growth has the potential to be a win-win experience — a very rewarding approach for the start-up nation. t is a rare accomplishment for a rabbi to have his name attached to the word “Talmud,” the corpus of Jewish law and lore that has been the subject of Jewish study and scholarship for close to 2,000 years. But becoming identified with his eponymous translation of the Talmud was only one of Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz’s many accomplishments during a life of making Jewish texts accessible to all — from casual reader to scholar — without compromising the rigor of his analysis. Steinsaltz, who died in Jerusalem on Aug. 7 at 83, was well known for his sharp intellect and tireless work ethic — with reports indicating that he regularly put in 17-hour workdays. Steinsaltz’s path to elevated Jewish scholar status was a bit unusual, as he was born into a secular family, and wasn’t drawn to religion until his teenage years. He eventually became associated with the Chabad Lubavitch movement, but was better known for his erudition, prodigious work product and overall scholarship than his Chasidic association. In 1965, when Steinsaltz was in his 20s, he began a translation of the Talmud from Aramaic into modern Hebrew. That project, which became his life’s work, took 45 years to complete. In the process, Steinsaltz added his own commentary to each page — a move that courted some degree of controversy, since it was seen by some as an effort to elevate his teachings to the level of Rashi, the preeminent medieval commentator whose glosses on the Bible, the Prophets and the 14

Talmud appear with those traditional texts in a script that bears his name. But Steinsaltz was undaunted, and in the process made much-welcomed technical innovations to his new Talmud texts, adding punctuation and paragraph breaks to make the ancient block texts (with no punctuation) more open to the modern reader. For a haredi Jew, his innovations were seen as radical, even heretical, by some. And perhaps those concerns contributed to Steinsaltz’s rock-star status in the Jewish world, where he was lionized as a “once-in-a-millennium scholar” who could “converse and relate with ease to the most brilliant scientist and the smallest of children equally,” as Rabbi Pinchas Allouche, a colleague of Steinsaltz, put it. Accessibility and broad-mindedness were the hallmarks of Steinsaltz’s work. In addition to his writings, he established a network of schools in Israel and the former Soviet Union that helped advance his goal of making the entire canon of Jewish texts accessible to all, irrespective of knowledge and background. Later in life, Steinsaltz Hebraized his surname to Even-Israel, but it is the Steinsaltz name — associated with this most humane, modest, prodigious, erudite scholar — that has become so well-known, honored and respected. Adin Steinsaltz was a hero to the Jewish people and a scholar of our generation. May his memory be for a blessing. WJW

Peter Beinart, Seth Rogen and the future of Judaism In his article, “If you are not Zionist or Orthodox, are Beinart and Rogen the ‘woke’ handwriting on the wall for Diaspora Jewry?” (Voices, Aug. 6), Eric Mandel sharply criticizes Peter Beinart and Seth Rogen for their criticism of Israel and warns that only those Jews who are Zionists or Orthodox will survive into the future. Peter Beinart, a long-time liberal Zionist, wrote in The New York Times that, because of Israel’s continued occupation of the land that advocates of a two-state solution saw as a future Palestinian state, he now advocates a “one-state solution” in which there would be equal rights for all, whatever their religious faith or ethnic background. The alternative, he argued, would be South African-type apartheid. In the case of comedian Seth Rogen, who spent his youth attending Jewish schools and camps, he said he had been repeatedly lied to when he was told that Palestine represented “a land without a people for a people without land.” Instead, he discovered that when Zionists began to settle in Palestine in the late 19th century, it was, in fact, fully populated. In his article, Mandel asks “...whether these are indicative of where the American
fight strongly even without a Jewish state.” Political Zionism, argued the philosopher Martin Buber, “...blasphemes the name of Zion. It is nothing more than one of the crude forms of nationalism.” Mandel may not be aware of the long history of Jewish opposition to Zionism. Judaism has made an extraordinary contribution to the world. The Hebrew Bible is an intrinsic part of both Christianity and Islam. It is to trivialize that great contribution and tradition to tie it to any state, as he has done in this attack on Peter Beinart and Seth Rogen. ALLAN C. BROWNFELD Alexandria The writer is the publications editor, American Council for Judaism.

Despite the claims of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israel is not the “homeland” of American Jews. Indeed, Zionism, which places the State of Israel, rather than God, as central to Judaism, represents a form of idolatry, similar to the Golden Calf in the Bible. The divide between the values of most American Jews and those embraced by the Israeli government is becoming increasingly clear. American Jews believe

In 1938, alluding to Nazism, Albert Einstein warned an audience of Zionist activists against the temptation to create a state “imbued with a narrow nationalism within our own ranks against which we have already had to

Israel may not top progressive agendas now, but tensions with the pro-Israel community will persist By Ron Kampeas
T
he Israel issue isn’t necessarily toward the top of the progressive to-do lists at the moment, but that doesn’t mean elements of the movement are any less at odds with the pro-Israel community. That was evident in an interview last week that the Democratic Socialists of America’s New York City co-chairwoman, Sumathy Kumar, gave with the news site Kings County Politics. Here’s the passage involving Israel: Kings County Politics: I noticed in the DSA questionnaire given to all local candidates looking for DSA support before this year’s state races that they were asked if they support Divestment, Sanction and Boycott (BDS) the state of Israel for their policies regarding Palestinians. Does the DSA support BDS as a policy plank? Kumar: The DSA is in favor of BDS and believes everybody has a right to their home. Obviously in New York City, we don’t have that much that we’re doing around that here, but we have a national organization that focuses on international affairs. KCP: So does the DSA support the existence of the state of Israel? Kumar: I feel like that’s not really relevant to this conversation. That’s a tough stance to back in a country that’s still overwhelmingly pro-Israel. But it’s worth noting that not all progressives feel this way. Ritchie Torres, a progressive being backed by pro-Israel groups who secured the Democratic nomination last month in a Bronx congressional district, did not think the exchange made much sense. “The leadership of the DSA declines to affirm that the state of Israel should exist,” he said on Twitter. “’Insane’ is the word that comes to mind.” Last week, four Democrats whose Israel positions rile the pro-Israel community — notably Sen. concentrated poverty and others did not.” The pro-Israel community may take some comfort in the absence of the mention of Israel, but as the Kings County interview shows, it should not. Compelling narratives of class struggle are what is winning elections for these candidates. And when their Israel-critical posture emerges, it will be inextricably woven into those narratives, in no small part because of the tendency of some pro-Israel activists to make enemies of these folks. Bush removed from her campaign website the page in which she endorsed BDS. Still, Clay made it an issue — he sent around a mailer that highlighted her BDS support and his own pro-Israel record. Russel Neiss, a St. Louis-area Jewish educator and technologist, analyzed the mailing and said it went mostly to an area with large concentrations of Jews. Pro-Israel PACs spent $1.5 million in a bid to defeat Bowman, a similar amount to defeat Sanders and millions in an effort to replace Omar. The only thing protecting Tlaib from a similar onslaught was her primary rival’s associations with Louis Farrakhan, who has spewed anti-Semitic rhetoric over the years. Powerful Jewish women face vicious tropes — they’re being used against Biden’s VP choice, too By Meredith Jacobs
R
egardless of who Joe Biden names as his running mate, we know what she’ll face. In the last few weeks, there have been leaks about “allies” warning Biden about naming Kamala Harris as his running mate because she “had no remorse” for the gall of actually competing in the primaries. Or comments that Harris “rubs people the wrong way” but that Karen Bass doesn’t. Or that Susan Rice should smile more. It’s a trope as old as time — reframe a strong, ambitious woman as a bitch. Pit two women against each other. Tell a woman to smile. What’s next? Publicly worrying that once a month she might become “hysterical”? Add racism, and all of this is heightened further if the candidate is also a woman of color. If this is what we’re hearing from allies of Biden, what’s going to happen once the Republicans weigh in? Get ready, folks. The tap of misogyny has opened and the floodwaters are about to pour forth. My own organization, Jewish Women International, represents more than 120 years of standing and fighting at the forefront of social justice issues — violence against women and girls, access to health care, systemic inequity. Through it all, we have had to continually push back against negative stereotypes that seek to diminish us. We think back on our early years of raising the issue of domestic violence in the Jewish community only to be told it didn’t happen — or were countered with stories of “nice Jewish boys” and their “nagging” wives. We are at once the loudmouthed, overly ambitious troublemakers and annoying, anxiety-producing mothers living only through the success of our children. We are the backbone of our community organizations and passed over as unqualified for the top seats. We are Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, yet are mocked as Sylvia Fine (“The Nanny”), Susie Green (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Mrs. Wolowitz (“The Big Bang Theory”). For those of us who work to end intimate partner violence, we know that at the root of violence and aggression is power and control. And nothing is more threatening than a powerful woman — not even a powerful man. A powerful woman is somehow emasculating. Think of these early critiques of the possibility of Harris as Biden’s running mate. How dare she have successfully challenged him during the primary debates! Had a man made the same provocations, his being named as the
VP candidate would have been lauded as a brilliant algorithms are created to amplify incendiary content. We expect better, especially from Facebook, whose move. Hillary Clinton faced this in 2016. Peter Beinart, in COO Sheryl Sandberg, herself a Jewish woman, boldly the October 2016 issue of The Atlantic, reported pins at exerted us to “ban bossy.” In fact, her site banbossy.com the Republican National Convention that read “Trump explains on its homepage: “When a little boy asserts 2016: finally someone with balls.” And, “Life’s a bitch: himself, he’s called a ‘leader.’ Yet when a little girl does don’t vote for one.” Even a T-shirt reading “Hillary sucks the same, she risks being branded ‘bossy.’ Words like bossy send a message: don’t raise your hand or speak up.” but not like Monica.” Of course, there are also the quieter, more subtle remarks — “she doesn’t look presidential” or “there’s just something about her I don’t like.” And don’t get us started on the fashion critiques, or the slut shaming that our young women share during our workshops on campus sexual assault. We faced the wrath of online trolls just a few years ago when we were working on a program to prevent Left: Words said about female presidential candidates and politicians. Right: A stock get abuse in the Jewish image of women. Design by Laura E. Adkins for JTA/Getty Images community and were trolled on our Facebook Sandberg understands. And more than the whis- bossy or whiny or petty or don’t smile enough. So then pered “concerns” about likability that are festering and why isn’t she doing more to raise awareness on her growing in the back rooms of political consultants’ own platform? LOCAL DAY SCHOOLS GEAR UP FOR THE FALL
It’s a rite of growing up to be impatient for school to let out in the spring and be sad about the passing of summer as school opens in the fall. Not this year. “I’ve had more students than ever before tell me that they can’t wait to return to school,” said Rabbi Mitchel Malkus, head of school at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. “But it reinforces for us why in-person learning is really the standard to reach for.” And that’s the problem. As Jewish day schools across the Washington region finalize plans for fall classes, the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic have led to some drafting multiple scenarios. While most administrators interviewed for this story want, like Malkus, to be able to convene classes in person, they have opted to go entirely virtual this fall. There’s no question that, with experience they 18

Gesher Jewish Day School
Gesher Jewish Day School in Fairfax has pushed back its fall start by two weeks to Sept. 8 to allow for additional facility training and building renovations. Head of School Aviva Walls said the school is knocking down walls to enlarge classrooms. That will leave fewer rooms, but more space for social distancing. Gesher is also upgrading its ventilation system, and buying PPE, hand sanitizer dispensers and soap.
All students and teachers will be required to wear face masks during the day and remain six feet apart. Walls said the school building is large enough to accommodate the 135 students. “We’re a small enough school with a large enough space to be able to fit everybody into the school with more with six feet in between all the students and the staff,” Walls said. “We took the advice of local health officials and doctors and that’s why we decided that we can do it safely.”

Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School of the Nation’s Capital plans to hold classes inside as well as virtually, according to Head of School Deborah Skolnick-Einhorn. The school has 475 students enrolled and will start classes on Sept. 1. Skolnick-Einhorn said the school wants to have pre-K and kindergarten classes meet inside its building, but as of Aug. 7 it hadn’t determined if it can do so safely. Older students will be outside, and will be organized into groups containing no more than 11 students. Outside lessons will include hikes, nature-inspired

scientific exploration and team-building challenges. To increase outdoor space, the school plans to rent camps and parks that would otherwise not be in use, Skolnick-Einhorn said. What if it rains? Or snows? “We’re looking at properties that have coverage for that,” she said. “A big part of our plan is to have some kind of cover.” The school will require health screenings for students and staff before any outdoor program. Temperatures will be checked upon arrival and frequent handwashing and hand sanitizer use will be part of the day. It goes without saying that mask wearing is required. “We really like the model of having them learn outdoors. It’s just a really good risk mitigation for them and for the teachers,” Skolnick-Einhorn said. “We have
gotten really beautiful support from our community. What I keep hearing is we understand how complex this decision is. We understand there’s no good answer. There’s no answer that will make everyone happy. But people seem to really appreciate that we’re going an unusual route.”
Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School
CESJDS in Rockville is going entirely virtual for its 916 students. Classes will begin Sept. 1 and Malkus said students will be taught via livesteam and from recorded video lessons. The videos will give students
and parents more flexibility in when to study. He added that the school is going this route because some families and faculty raised health concerns. “I have a lot of families who want the school to be cautious,” Malkus said. “And we want to make sure that they’re comfortable returning.”
Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy
Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy in Rockville also will be all virtual when classes begin on Aug. 31. The school will implement an expanded version of the program it launched in the spring for its 650 students, said Sarah Sicherman, director of marketing and communications. “Basically we try to create an experience that was as similar to a school day as possible,” Sicherman said
Students taught under the “Berman at Home 2.0” model will be instructed through a four-day schedule via Zoom. Berman’s preschool and kindergarten will open for in-person instruction. Sicherman said the school is also exploring small group outdoor activities. Virtual learning does have its upside, Sicherman said. Nobody has to worry about how far they are from anyone else, or wear a mask. But it is harder for teachers to connect with their students. “It’s not the same as seeing your child’s face in person and being in the classroom with them and forming that connection,” she said. “It’s hard to accept that this
is where we are, but I think people are trying to make the most of it.”
Winter is coming At the same time, the schools are working on plans for how they’re going to transition classes back into their buildings. Earlier this summer, Berman was planning on having in-person classes in the fall. Those plans fell through on Aug. 5, when Montgomery County Health Officer Travis Gayles prohibited private and religious schools from opening until Oct. 1. Even though the order was rescinded, Berman decided to stick with distance learning, at least for the fall. Berman plans indoor instruction in the winter if allowed by state and county guidelines. Students and teachers will wear masks while inside the building, according to a document Berman released in July. Classrooms will be set up to accommodate six feet between each student. Dismissal times will be staggered to keep everyone from crowding hallways at the same time. Milton has plans to bring students back indoors incrementally, according to Skolnick-Einhorn. CESJDS plans to review conditions in November and, if possible, begin the transition back into its building starting with the youngest students, according to Malkus. The school is looking into a model similar to Berman’s, where students would have indoor instruction depending on their grade level by the day or week while the rest are taught virtually. Like schools everywhere, Jewish day schools in the Washington area have spent the last half year improvising, adapting. In preparing for a new school year, they’ve made plans they may never use as they balance their mandate to teach with their need to keep the school community safe. All of it will be put to the test at the end of this month. WJW Other area day schools did not respond to requests for interviews for this article. They include: Leo Bernstein Jewish Academy of Fine Arts, Yeshiva of Greater Washington and Torah School of Greater Washington. eschucht@midatlanticmedia.com @EricSchucht

LAURA ZAM TAKES ON SEXUAL HEALING IN By Lisa Traiger Arts Correspondent
‘The Pleasure Plan’
Laura Zam hated sex.
With a passion. The District-based solo performer, writer, public speaker and, most recently, sexuality educator suffered for decades from painful intercourse, but suffered even more from not talking about it. “We [women] don’t talk much about sex,” she acknowledged. “One reason is that we think there’s something wrong with us … and feel it’s a shameful thing to bring up, especially if we’re in a partnered relationship” and privacy is a consideration. These days, she’s found her voice, and her pleasure. Zam, 57, learned much on her years-long journey to sexual healing, which she originally recounted in “Married Sex,” a 2012 one-woman play that premiered at Theater J, before moving to New York and other locales. This spring, she returned to her exploration of the sex industrial complex — a years-long investigation that took her into EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, a therapy used in trauma victims) and EFT (emotional freedom techniques, using acupuncture-like touch points), a hypnotist, a tantric sex coach, trauma therapy, group couples’ workshops, a pelvic floor physical therapist and a range of gynecologists for her troubling diagnosis of vaginismus. The result is “The Pleasure Plan: One Woman’s Search for Sexual Healing,” a bright pink-covered book by Zam that is both an autobiographical confessional and self-help manual about her quest for sexual healing. She wrote it to empower women to speak up, seek help and take charge of their sexual health, and their sexual pleasure. In Zam’s breezy, frank — and sometimes explicit — prose she shares her deepest pains, traumas and intimate moments, in the bedroom, the examining room and the therapy office. “I decided I was going to write about this issue because 20

I just saw it as an opportunity to heal myself, to force myself to heal,” she said. “As a performer, I knew how to make art. I didn’t know how to heal myself of this past trauma or whatever it was that was affecting me.” In the book, Zam recounts her childhood history of sexual abuse — two pedophiles who lived on her Brooklyn street, and a teenage handyman all molested her at a young age. The vague memories and flashbacks continued to weave in and out of her subconscious over ensuing decades, marring her intimate relationships. Zam also experienced generational trauma: Her mother survived the Lodz ghetto, two concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and a death march,
while her father suffered from untreated depression that kept him isolated from his family for much of her youth; these experiences haunted her for decades. In fact, while she had a few boyfriends over the years, she didn’t marry until 46, partly, she admitted, because of effects from residual trauma. “As Jews, we have a complicated relationship with trauma. Individually we have our own traumas that we’re dealing with … and then how are those traumas and processes informed by this collective Jewish trauma?” she wondered. “There are some old ways of thinking about trauma,” Zam said, “because … the Jewish people are trauma survivors. Of course, the biggest trauma survivors are Holocaust survivors.”
She alludes to her mother, noting that treatment of trauma and PTSD in the post-war 1950s and ‘60s was often inadequate or nonexistent. “My mother never went to therapy,” she noted, “but when I was in my 20s, I did. But even I thought it would be bizarre for my mother to go to therapy and talk about Nazis,” when Zam said she used therapy to talk about boyfriends, work problems and other problems a woman in her 20s faced. “My concept of Holocaust trauma was that it was something so huge that you couldn’t even talk about it,” she said. “And you certainly couldn’t process it. It’s too big to process.” But while traumatic memories thread through her book, it’s a purposefully light and uplifting read. “I took this risk. It was an experiment to create this first as a play, to see where it would take me.” She called the result miraculous. “It gave me courage to step outside of the morass and the confusion and pain of [the diagnosis]. It gave me an ability to look at things from a playful angle, an improvisational angle, a creative angle, a highly imaginative angle, a humor angle.” Zam hopes that women, young, middleaged and older can find ways to connect with her story and with their own bodies: “First understand what … pleasure is for you … and own your pleasure.” WJW “The Pleasure Plan: One Woman’s Search for Sexual Healing” by Laura Zam, published by Health Communications Inc. and distributed by Simon & Schuster. ICELANDIC JEWISH COOKIES:
A dessert with a fascinating story to tell By Rachel Ringler

Y
ou’ve heard of the wandering Jew, but have you heard of the wandering Jewish cookie? As Jews move from country to country, they pick up recipes, spices and dishes along the way. Sometimes, even after a Jewish community is no more, their food remains, an echo of a world that once was. Such is the case of the “Jewish cookie” from Iceland. Recently I learned of a cookbook, “The Culinary Saga of New Iceland, Recipes From the Shores of Lake Winnipeg,” compiled by Kristin Olafson Jenkyns, a writer with forbearers from Iceland. Her book documents the history and culinary traditions of immigrants from Iceland who settled in North America at the end of the 19th century. Many of them moved to Manitoba, Canada, on Lake Winnipeg, where they formed a community that came to be known as “New Iceland.” In the section of the book titled “Cakes and Cookies,” following classic Icelandic foods like skyr, smoked fish and brown bread, are recipes for cookies traditionally eaten on Christmas. Their name in Icelandic is gyðingakökur, which translates to “Jewish cookie.” How did “Jewish” cookies end up in a cookbook filled with the food of Icelandic immigrants to the New World? You can be sure that there weren’t many, if any, Jews among those settlers 150 years ago. Yet there are three recipes for Jewish cookies nestled between other traditional sweets like Vinarterta and ginger cookies. Olafson Jenkyns is not sure how they came to be part of the culinary canon of the New Icelanders. Her guess is that the Jewish cookies came to Iceland by way of Denmark. For hundreds of years, Iceland was closely tied to Denmark; traders and merchants, some of them Jewish, moved back and forth between the two countries. Perhaps the cookies came via that trade route. And how did those “Jewish” cookies land in Denmark in the first place? According to Gil Marks, author of Encyclopedia of Jewish Food, Jewish butter cookies originated in Holland. Many of the Jews who were expelled from Spain and Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries found a safe haven in Holland. There they merged, “…their Moorish-influenced Iberian fare with the local Scandinavian cuisine. Instead of olive oil, they used the butter found in great quantity in Dutch cookery to create small rich morsels, still called Joodse boterkoeke (Jewish butter cookie) in Holland.” Until today, Dutch Jews serve those cookies on Hanukkah and Shavuot and at other dairy meals. From Holland, the cookies spread to Denmark where they became a traditional pre-Christmas treat. As is the case with all immigrants, when the Icelanders left their homeland in 1875 for the New World and created the community of New Iceland in Canada, they brought their culinary traditions with them. Gyðingakökur were part of that tradition. “The cookies must have been popular for them to have made it from Denmark to Iceland to New Iceland,” said Olafson Jenkyns. In scouring through old cookbooks from the New Iceland
community, Olafson Jenkyns found these three recipes for Jewish cookies – slightly different one from the next but all most definitely known as “Jewish.” One recipe was from a cookbook, circa 1915, from Reykjavik, Iceland. The other two came from community cookbooks from New Iceland from the middle of the 20th century. In Gil Marks’ book, the Jodekager, or Jewish cookie recipe, was attributed to Denmark. His recipe is very similar to the Icelandic ones — all have lots of butter, all are rolled out into a thin dough, and then cut into rounds. And all are topped with a wash and a sweetener that combines sugar and nuts. Are the cookies Icelandic? Canadian? Dutch? Or Danish? No matter where you find them, the name is the same, hearkening back to a Jewish presence and the Jewish bakers who created them. This recipe for gyðingakökur comes from “The Culinary Sage of New Iceland, Recipes From the Shores of Lake Winnipeg.”

The new foodie normal
Instead of travel and tours, one-on-one chef video lessons By Karen Chernick
T
EL AVIV — The reservations were rolling in, and Inbal Baum was preparing for her busiest summer yet of food tours through Israel’s famed open-air food markets. Her decade-old tour company and its team of more than 20 guides were ready to lead thousands of international guests to markets in places like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where they would try curated samples of foods ranging from hummus and bourekas to lachoch bread and ma’amoul cookies. That was before the coronavirus pandemic.
The platform offers tailored classes in cooking, baking, mixology, cake decorating and food photography. Many of the instructors are Jewish, and many of the courses are Jewish-themed. When Baum compiled a wish list of culinary celebrities and started reaching out to potential instructors, she was surprised by how many of them said yes. “Really insanely great chefs were very open to doing this,” she said. “A lot of these chefs see their own futures in some kind of online format, and so this is a perfect way to give them a platform to start off that process.” Instructors include Michelin Star restaurateur and sommelier Etheliya Hananova, James Beard AwardShoppers are back at Israeli outdoor markets, such as this one in Tzfat, pictured July 15, 2020, but Delicious Experiences lives on. Photo by David Cohen/Flash90
First, the arrivals of tourists slowed. Then restaurants closed. Then, finally, so did the markets. Baum’s company, called Delicious Israel, was out of work. And yet, she noticed that people seemed more interested in food than usual — they just weren’t flying anywhere to try new dishes. Instead, they were cooking, baking and pickling in their home kitchens nonstop. So Baum thought of another avenue to reach her foodie clientele while simultaneously supporting other food industry professionals who, like herself, found themselves floundering overnight: In late May she launched Delicious Experiences, a website that connects home cooks with leading chefs and culinary experts (mostly U.S.-based, some international) for one-on-one private workshops via video chat. 22

winner Nate Appleman, and a range of Israeli chefs, including Nir Mesika, Roy Ner and spice maven Lior Lev Sercarz. Kevin Fink, a Texas-based chef on the platform, says that classes are “always something that I get asked to do, and traditionally, we just don’t have time.” In the age of COVID-19, reaching clients online is more feasible for some chefs. Beyond the time factor, these types of live private experiences were never a high priority in the food industry. “It’s actually something that’s super uncommon in the food world. Well, was uncommon,” adds New Yorkbased Jake Cohen, another chef on the platform and author of the upcoming cookbook “Jew-ish: A Cookbook:
Reinvented Recipes from a Modern Mensch.” “It’s something that’s changed drastically. Almost overnight we saw this complete shift in how people reacted to food and what they were craving.” Shiry Yosef, an entrepreneur in Tel Aviv who loves drinking cocktails at bars and restaurants but had never made one at home, tried a craft mixology class on Delicious Experiences with Singapore-based bartender Joseph Haywood. They decided to focus on gin and whisky. “It’s not a substitute for travel or for dining out,” Yosef said. Still, she added, “I actually loved that I was in my own kitchen with my own ingredients. It made it feel like something that I will repeat at home.” When Baum tried the cocktail class herself, she also felt it was an advantage being in her own kitchen — despite the fact that she doesn’t have any cocktail-making tools. “We don’t have a shaker,” she said. “He’s like, ‘Do you have a water bottle?’ And right behind me was my daughter’s sippy cup, and the chef was like, ‘That’s perfect! You can even strain it.’” Baum argues that doing these workshops at home, in the same kitchen clients use daily, makes them much more likely to recreate the dishes later. She claims, as someone who regularly takes cooking classes overseas when she travels, that the dishes are always tricky to reproduce at home since you never have the same tools or ingredients. “But all of a sudden, when you do it in your kitchen, you learn that you don’t need a rolling pin — you can actually just use a wine bottle or a paper towel thing,” she said. “Or, in Israel we don’t have half-and-half — it doesn’t matter. It’s something that a recipe’s not going to tell you. When there’s a chef on the other side they’ll tell you what to mix, part cream, part whatever.” Israel’s markets have opened back up again, despite a rise in COVID-19 cases across the country — but what people want has changed, Baum says. Going out to restaurants doesn’t seem to hold quite the same appeal. “Now you can still go out and you can still order in. But none of us really want to as much anymore,” Baum said. “The kinds of experiences that we might have done before are maybe a little less exciting or appealing right now. But we still want do things.” Cohen sees being a foodie as meaning something different now. “This new world has created an environment in which, if anyone prioritized good food in their life [before], that means that now they have to prioritize learning how to cook at home,” he said. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz made the Talmud more accessible By Ben Harris

R
abbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz, the acclaimed scholar whose landmark translation of the Talmud enabled a vast readership to access one of Judaism’s most canonical texts, has died. Steinsaltz died Aug. 7 at 83 in Jerusalem. Steinsaltz’s monumental translation of the 63 volumes of the Babylonian Talmud made the arcane rabbinic debates and folkloric tales easier to comprehend, unlocking the wonders of Talmud study for those lacking a high-level Jewish education. The project took 45 years to complete. Steinsaltz not only rendered the forbidding Aramaic text into modern Hebrew, but integrated his own commentary into the sparse language of the original, filling in gaps in the text that had previously required deep familiarity with the internal mechanics of talmudic discourse to decipher. A new English version of the Steinsaltz Talmud by the Koren publishing house, and a free version of the translation available on the website Sefaria, further expanded Steinsaltz’s reach. “The Talmud was never meant to be an elitist book,” said Arthur Kurzweil, the author of two books about Steinsaltz and a board member of the Aleph Society, which raises funds to support the rabbi’s work. “It was meant to be for everybody.

category alongside Rashi, the medieval French scholar whose commentary on the Bible and the Talmud, composed 1,000 years ago, is considered the most authoritative. But Steinsaltz also wrote another 60 books on topics ranging from Jewish ethics to theology to prayer to mysticism. He also helped establish educational institutions in Israel and the
former Soviet Union. Born to secular parents in Jerusalem in 1937, Steinsaltz embraced Jewish practice as a teenager. Though his father was an irreligious socialist, he sent his son to study Talmud with a tutor at the age of 10. Steinsaltz’s intellectual gifts were evident early, when he became the youngest school principal in Israel at 23. In 1965, Steinsaltz founded the Israel Institute for Talmudic Publications, the same year he began his Talmud translation. His work was driven by a desire to educate large numbers of Jews about their heritage. “Let my people know,” was his favorite slogan. “The Talmud is the central pillar of Jewish knowledge, important for the overall understanding of what is Jewish,” Steinsaltz told JTA in 2010 on the occasion of the completion of the translation. “But it is a book that Jews cannot understand. This is a dangerous situation, like a collective amnesia. I tried to make pathways through which people will be able to enter the Talmud without encountering impassable barriers. It’s something that will always be a challenge, but I tried to make it at least possible.” The completion of the translation was accompanied by a global day of Jewish learning connecting 360 Jewish communities in 48 countries. since become an annual affair. Steinsaltz’s work was long deemed controversial. His Talmud departed from longstanding conventions, introducing punctuation and paragraph breaks, altering the pagination and placing his own commentary in the space around the main text that had previously been the domain of Rashi. Rabbi Elazar Shach, a leading haredi Orthodox rabbi in Israel, called Steinsaltz a heretic and forbade his followers from reading his works, apparently out of concern for some passages in two works on the Bible that Steinsaltz subsequently agreed to modify. Shach insisted that all of Steinsaltz’s work was heretical; however, another eminent 20th-century authority, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein,

approved of the Steinsaltz Talmud. In 1998, Jacob Neusner, a Conservative rabbi and noted scholar of Judaism, published a 250-page book entitled “How Adin Steinsaltz Misrepresents the Talmud.” Steinsaltz was also criticized for accepting the leadership of a modernday Sanhedrin, a recreation of the ancient rabbinic body. Steinsaltz resigned the post in 2008 out of concern for potential breaches of Jewish law. But none of that slowed Steinsaltz’s embrace as an unparalleled scholar of Judaism, both in the Jewish world and beyond. He was awarded the Israel Prize, Israel’s highest cultural honor, in 1998, along with the inaugural Israeli Presidential Award of Distinction, the French Order of Arts and Literature, and a 2012 National Jewish Book Award. He was invited to deliver the prestigious Terry Lectures at Yale University and was a
scholar in residence at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington. In 2016, he was invited to a private audience with the pope. Among his best-known works beyond the Talmud translation is “The Thirteen Petalled Rose,” an introduction to Jewish mysticism first published in 1980. A follower of the Chabad Chasidic movement, Steinsaltz also authored several books on Tanya, one of the group’s core texts. In 2018, he published a translation and commentary on the Five Books of Moses. Despite his massive intellectual achievements, Steinsaltz often appearedslightly disheveled in public and had a playful streak. Kurzweil recalled an appearance at a Long Island yeshivah at which Steinsaltz encouraged the students to do everything they could to make their teachers’ lives miserable, and even suggested a source book where
they could find difficult questions sure to flummox them. “He’s a troublemaker and he’s got a gleam in his eye at all times,” said Kurzweil, who served as Steinsaltz’s driver during his visits to New York. “He’s up to mischief sometimes. He likes to question everything.” Long plagued by ill health, Steinsaltz suffered a stroke in 2016 that left him unable to speak. “Jewish learning is created by the Jews and is also creating the Jews,” Steinsaltz said in 2010. “When you learn, you learn about yourself. So learning one page of the Talmud is equivalent to two or three sessions with a psychoanalyst. That’s why people are interested — Jewish learning is a mirror into our soul.” WJW

Climbing the Blessing Mountain By Saul Golubcow Special to WJW This week’s Torah portion is Re’eh, Deuteronomy 11:26 – 16:17.
“B
ehold,” Moses opens Parshat Re’eh, “Today I set before you a blessing and a curse.” To represent visually this recurrent choice before the Israelites, Moses designates two side-by-side mountains. Now, imagine you are looking up at those two mountains. Toward which mountain would your gaze linger? “Of course,” you answer, “I would gaze toward the blessing.” But in making your seemingly easy choice, reflect upon the responsibilities a nd efforts Moses lays out as the Moses draws conditions by which the Isra- a dire picture of elites, who are what can occur about to cross by sacrificing the Jordan into the Promised “burnt-offereings Land, will gain in every place blessing. that you see.” To merit “blessing,” the Israelites must rise to the challenge first issued in God’s command to Abraham at the beginning of Lech Lecha. God tells Abraham to leave not just the safety of his father’s house and homeland, but to take upon himself the incipient Jewish journey. To willingly say, “Hineni — I’m here.” Now Moses is challenging the Israelites to say, “Hinenu — We are here and willing to exert the effort to achieve our blessings.” As a master teacher, Moses instructs the Israelites on the nature of these efforts. Repeatedly in the parshah, Moses tells them to bring sacrifices and offerings (prayers) to a centralized place of worship. Why this insistence? Is Moses indicating that obtaining a blessing doesn’t come easy? Consider the planning and exertion it would take to travel several times a year with one’s family, produce and animals to join others in a community that worships together. But also consider
the pride and satisfaction of having completed the journey and, as Moses offers at the end of the parshah, experiencing the blessing of joy. Anticipating aspects of human nature that impel toward the “easy way” but away from the blessing, Moses draws a dire picture of what can occur by sacrificing “burnt-offerings in every place that you see.” Separated from their community’s central rituals and conventions, the Israelites might become susceptible to the enticements of pagan religious practices and the lure of false prophets. Moses fears that apart from their own community who “rejoice” in seeking God, the Israelites will be “ensnared” by the perversions and abominations practiced by local inhabitants who “burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.” What greater curse could the Israelites ever experience? Moses also teaches that freedom itself is a blessing. But to be free, the Israelites cannot take fortune for granted. Their memories must link to the time they were slaves in Egypt. They must accept that “freedom to” does not include external defilement of their bodies or internally compromising the rules of kashrut by what they ingest. They must adhere to the obligations of observing festivals three times a year, understanding that freedom doesn’t exist if one is endlessly shackled to the mundane. And while Moses commands the Israelites to take care of the needy through tithing, extension of credit, loan forgiveness and bondsperson manumission, these acts deserve merit only if the benefactor is free from “a base thought” of resentment. Thus, in Parshat Re’eh, Moses poses the following to the Israelites: To find joy and to experience full freedom, are you willing to make the hard climb to the top of the Blessing Mountain?

THE VOLUNTEERING LIFE WITH
Matthew Mutterperl By Eric Schucht Staff Writer
T
he first time Matthew Mutterperl was invited to join his synagogue’s brotherhood, he said no. He also said no the second time. Then came the third time. “I felt it was time,” Mutterperl says. “And my wife pushed me into it.” That was six years ago. In June, at a virtual Shabbat service at Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria, Mutterperl was named the brotherhood’s Man of the Year. It was recognition that he had “worked the hardest and contributed the most to Brotherhood and/or Beth El throughout the previous year,” as the synagogue puts it. Mutterperl learned that he would be receiving the honor back in April at a brotherhood board meeting. (He’s the group’s first vice president, which includes the office of vice president for catering.) While he appreciates the gesture, he said it takes more than just one person to make all the events possible. “I knew I do a lot for our temple, so I wasn’t shocked. It’s an honor to receive it,” he says. “Even though it’s a single award, it’s really about everyone coming and helping to make things happen. Not just one person.” Mutterperl says he was initially reticent to join the brotherhood because he was so busy volunteering for other synagogue activities. Since joining Beth El Hebrew Congregation 12 years ago, he’s chaired or co-chaired Beth El’s Evening with Friends, a dinner and fundraiser held at members’ homes, several times. He’s helped out on numerous religious school activities, recruited ushers for Friday night services, been a primary organizer for the annual religious school picnic and served multiple years on the Beth El board of directors, 26

Brother, brother If all men in a brotherhood are brothers, what does it take to be a good brother? Matthew Mutterperl, the man of the year, offers these tips. A good brother is supportive.
“A lot of [being a brother] is about supporting each other. For example, this year for Purim, everybody helped out except for one brother who was on vacation.”
A good brother is a team player.
Photo by David Stuck including two years as vice president. “I always enjoy volunteering when I can so that I can help people reach a goal,” Mutterperl says. “And making a community happy is a good thing too.” He carried that attitude with him into the Beth El Hebrew Congregation Brotherhood. “Matt can always be counted on to help serve or clean-up at Brotherhood’s catering and program events [and] co-ordinate and deliver Kiddush cups at multiple B’nei Mitzvahs,” according to an article in the Beth El Bulletin, which also noted his “easy-going personality.” For the sixth consecutive year, he chaired the brotherhood’s annual Purim carnival. Mutterperl grew up in Rhode Island and moved to Washington in 1988 to attend George Washington University. There, he met his future wife, Emily. The couple eventually settled in Lorton, where they are raising four sons.
He worked in the security industry for 16 years, but more recently started teaching Spanish to adults in Fairfax County Public Schools. Mutterperl says he discovered Beth El Hebrew Congregation when he was studying at George Washington University. The synagogue was close to campus, so he attended a few High Holiday services there. He became a member later, when his eldest son became a bar mitzvah. “And I’ve always loved the community there. I think they’re always very welcoming,” Mutterperl says. “And that’s another reason I joined.” As the hardest-working man at the synagogue, Mutterperl can’t slow down now. WJW eschucht@midatlanticmedia.com @EricSchucht
“If everybody puts in their fair share, good things can happen. We can make big events happen. It’s about reaching out to people and getting them on board, buying into things like the Purim carnival. I think this year we had 93 people volunteer. And that’s just amazing. And it’s all because you have your motivation to do something bigger than yourself. “
A good brother gets involved at his synagogue.
“I have met some Jewish people that aren’t involved at all in the congregation, but I think it can be very rewarding. They may be missing out on something. A lot of younger people don’t want to associate with that kind of organization for whatever reason. But I think it can be very rewarding. They should at least give it a shot.”
A good brother shares his knowledge with others.
“Helping educate people is very important. And I always feel good about teaching kids. You hope in some way to touch their lives. And for the adults, I always hoped that by teaching Spanish, they’ll get something out of it and be able to use it. I think it’s a good quality to share your knowledge with others.” WJW
