Engaging with communities, taking on internships, and making personal discoveries that can last a lifetime.

1
IMMERSION IN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE The Language Pledge®, pioneered by Middlebury’s summer Language Schools, is a cornerstone of immersive language study and a key part of our study abroad programs. When students sign it, they pledge to speak only the language of their host country while there. Exceptions exist, but they are few. 2
By signing the pledge, students embrace both the challenge and authentic experience of a study abroad program in every respect—academic, social, and even professional when they undertake internships. Sticking to it requires self-discipline, creativity, fearlessness in the face of mistakes, and a sense of
humor. The reward is rapid progress in gaining proficiency and self-confidence in language learning. Many of our students major in areas other than foreign languages, yet all are committed to linguistic development and cultural immersion.
“I was completely integrated because in Yaoundé, there is no choice but to go about daily life as locals do. This is what made the Middlebury School in Cameroon a truly unforgettable experience unlike the typical study abroad program.” —Arjun Mehta, Bowdoin College Yaoundé, Cameroon
3
AUTHENTIC ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY With a few exceptions, courses are taught in the host country’s language and conform to its educational approach. Universities in most other countries expect students to exercise a high degree of self-determination in their learning, and courses therefore may have a

different structure than U.S. students are used to. Students adjust to a new teaching style and way of learning, which is an education in itself. On-site Middlebury staff are there to help ease transitions as students navigate university systems and policies.
“ Being with the Middlebury program inspired me to take advantage of my host university experience and to think about my U.S. education in a completely different light.” —Minah Choi, Pomona College Buenos Aires, Argentina
“ The program’s immersive approach of enrolling students directly at the university gave me the opportunity to experience a completely new academic setting, style, and structure, and thus allowed me to grow greatly as a student.” —Nick Wilbur, Wheaton College Florence, Italy
5
GUIDED INDEPENDENCE An important part of the Middlebury study abroad experience is helping students discover their interests in a new place—engaging with their community, exploring culture and history, and making personal connections. Internships and extracurricular activities can further understanding of the host culture and help students gain professional experience, boost language proficiency, and make local connections. On-site staff help 6
connect students to activities, internships, volunteer work, and research projects tailored to their interests. Past students have been involved with the following: Museums and galleries
Education
Theater companies
Community sports teams
Media and entertainment
University choirs
Environmental organizations
Governmental agencies
Research organizations
Health care
“ Learning to navigate and communicate in such a large and densely populated city provided constant opportunity for meeting new people and stepping outside my comfort zone.”
“ We were provided with an excellent balance of support and guidance along with independence to learn and explore on our own.” — Celinda Chang, Tulane University Tokyo, Japan
—Daniel Morris, Middlebury College Delhi, India

MIDDLEBURY SUMMER PROGRAMS LANGUAGE SCHOOLS Middlebury has led the world in full-immersion language studies since the launch of its first summer program in 1915. Today Middlebury Language Schools offer seven- and eight-week summer sessions from beginner to advanced levels in 12 languages. Middlebury also offers graduate programs in Vermont and abroad; these programs can be completed in 15 months or in four six-week summers. The Middlebury Language Schools prepare students and teachers, scholars and artists, entrepreneurs and political leaders every summer to achieve their language goals and so much more, offering a year of college-level language learning (9–12 semester hours of credit) in one intensive summer. Before going abroad, students can gain the language skills and confidence necessary to function more independently. When returning from abroad, students can further their study of languages or begin graduate work.
All of our students pledge to communicate only in their language of study for their entire time in the program. With the Language Pledge®, students are immersed in language 24/7, enabling them to make remarkable progress in their studies. They are surrounded by world-class faculty who will help and support them both in and out of the classroom, joining them for meals and cocurricular in-language activities that enhance their cultural and contextual understanding. Need-based financial aid and merit-based fellowships are available.

SCHOOL OF THE ENVIRONMENT
MUSEUM STUDIES IN OXFORD
The Middlebury School of the Environment is a six-week summer environmental studies and leadership training program in Yunnan, the most biologically and ethnically diverse province in China. Students take three courses investigating community-based sustainability initiatives in the rural and urban contexts of Dali and Kunming.
Middlebury Museum Studies in Oxford features two credit-bearing courses with weekly seminars and guest lectures, an intensive week of experiential learning at a local stately home, special tours of Oxford’s renowned museums and archives, and numerous field trips to sites in London and farther afield. Students live and study in the heart of the city of Oxford, with access to the Bodleian Library system. They gain an unparalleled insight into the structure, management, and activities of museums as well as a critical introduction to the unique British approach to historical preservation.
Nationally recognized environmental faculty and mentors lead the interdisciplinary courses both in and out of the classroom. Students participate in leadership training workshops and field experiences to build a toolkit of leadership skills. In addition, students participate in a Mandarin workshop during the session. The program awards three Middlebury units of credit (equivalent to nine semester hours of credit), and need- and merit-based financial aid is available.

The academic program ensures the closest possible collaboration between tutors and students, including a small-group seminar that culminates in the production of a substantial research essay and a one-on-one “Oxford-style” tutorial tailored to students’ academic interests. Access to the Bodleian Library resources guarantees that students will always have a vast amount of reading material at their disposal. Need-based financial aid is available.
