THE FULL .5 EXPERIENCE
Each February, approximately 100 firstyear students begin at Middlebury as Febs. They’ve been accepted under the same high standards as those who enroll in the fall but have the chance to take a pause before enrollment to work, explore, or volunteer. The Feb program is a 50–plus–year unique tradition at Middlebury that includes a distinct class year designation (we add a .5 to your graduation year) and an optional skidown graduation ceremony!

Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Major
As a first-generation American, I came to Middlebury in part because its generous financial aid allowed me to earn my degree without financially burdening my family.
I knew I was interested in STEM but wasn’t sure what kind of science I wanted to pursue. My first on-campus research at Middlebury was in the ecology of Lyme disease.
That led me to explore research in a wet lab setting. I joined Professor Erin Eggleston’s lab working primarily on a coral host genotyping project.
Don’t be afraid to try things. Get firsthand experience to discover what you’re passionate about. Every experience will inform what you do next.
—Evan Fedorov ’21
After graduation, I joined a research lab at Harvard for two years, which thoroughly reinforced my interest in stem cell biology.
Then I took a pivotal course on stem cell biology and I found my passion. Through Middlebury, I was awarded a prestigious summer internship doing biomedical research at the Gates Center at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
I’m now beginning my PhD at the Yale Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences in their molecular, cellular, and genetics track.
