MIDDLESBROUGH v BRISTOL CITY
SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY 11 JULY 2020, 3PM
OFFICIAL MATCHDAY MAGAZINE FREE ONLINE
NEIL WARNOCK Welcome to Bristol City and their caretaker manager Dean Holden. It’s another tough game here at the Riverside, with Bristol City having an outside chance of the Play-Offs and our own battle against relegation. It certainly looks like both will go right down to the wire. I can’t say how proud I was the other night, not just about the performance, which was excellent, but the way we went about it to get a result. I’m sure it surprised a few of our fans after the QPR debacle, but
that’s how we are at the moment I’m afraid, very up and down. The position in the table shows that we haven’t had the consistency that we need in this league, but the attitude has been fabulous and we will be trying our best to get the right result to cling on to our Championship status because, believe me, no one at this club can contemplate going down. But like everybody else we have no divine right to stay in this league. We have to earn that right
by hard work and commitment to get the points, and I’m sure all you supporters will be really behind us watching the games and listening to the radio. I can assure you all I’ll be doing my absolute damndest to retain our Championship status. Be lucky, Neil

NEWS
The ‘New Norm’
There have been many changes to ensure that we have been able to re-start and work towards completing the football season. While many of those changes are recognisable – not least the fact we have been unable to play in front of crowds – there have been notable changes behind-thescenes, too. Here at the Riverside, to ensure social distancing measures are complied with, our visitors have been unable to use the normal away dressing room. So, where have they been going? Well, we’re fortunate enough to have a sizeable media suite adjacent to the tunnel which is currently being used by our opponents. Away from home, while we were able to use the normal
away dressing room at Hull City, at Stoke we were housed on the main stand concourse. Meanwhile at Millwall, we were housed in an indoor football facility to the rear of the away end at the Den. Another new development has been the replacement of media conferences with Zoom calls, with our pre-match conference chats held in an empty media room at Rockliffe. But that was nothing compared to Wednesday at Millwall where our experienced manager clocked up a first when his post-match media Zoom conference was held on an empty team bus moments after the final whistle!
See the manager’s pre-Bristol City media conference, here...
BORO FANS BOOST THE TEAM
Last season our opening day trip to Millwall was watched by a crowd of 15,056 – on Wednesday around 20,000 Boro fans watched our 2-0 win at the Den. The viewing figures have been remarkable with an average of 15,000 individual streams watching our games since the re-start, and Neil Warnock was quick to pay tribute to our streaming support after our midweek win. “I know they can’t wait to get back in the ground and to support the team, but it’s fantastic that they’ve been able to watch and support us in this manner,” he said. “I know they weren’t there in person at the Den on Wednesday, but they were there in spirit and I’m sure they’ll have enjoyed it.”
Youngster signs from Sunderland Young marksman Cole Kiernan has joined the club from Sunderland. The 18-year-old striker signed a professional contract at Rockliffe last week. Hartlepool-born Cole was on a scholarship with the Black Cats, having joined them from York City as a schoolboy. He enjoyed a whirlwind 2019/20 season, making his debut for the Republic of Ireland U18s in a friendly against Austria and followed that by making his Sunderland debut in the EFL cup tie win over Grimsby in early October.
He also clocked up 15 appearances in Sunderland’s U18 side, scoring five goals, and also featured once for their U23s. Boro’s Head of Academy Craig Liddle said: “Cole was a player we wanted to sign a few years ago, and we’re delighted to be able to bring him to the club now. “We’ve been following his progress and his development at Sunderland, and when the opportunity came about to sign him on a professional contract we were keen to do so. “Cole joins a number of our other young players who have progressed facebook.com/MFCofficial

US Vs. THEM BRISTOL CITY Today is the 80th meeting between the two clubs. We have won 32 to City’s 24, with 23 ending in draws... LAST TIME HERE A first-half goal from Adam Webster condemned us to defeat here as we fell out of the top-six for the first time since August. The win lifted Bristol City up to fourth in the table, but like ourselves they came up short of a Play-Off spot in the final reckoning...
EARLY ENCOURAGEMENT The 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate back in August saw us denied by a City equaliser in the final 10 minutes after Britt Assombalonga appeared to have put us on the road to victory.
You can watch more here...
PROMOTION PARTY A crowd of 12,000 packed into our old Linthorpe Road ground in April 1902 to celebrate our first ever promotion sealed by a 2-0 win. Teenage goalkeeper Tim Williamson made his debut – and went on to play a record 602 games and be Boro’s first England international.
TEESSIDE TOUGHIE While Bristol City haven’t fared too badly at the Riverside in recent years, it wasn’t always like that. At one point they had won just twice in 83 years, their first in 1907 and their second not until 1993 when a Brian Tinnion penalty proved decisive.
HAT-TRICK HEROES Brian Clough and Uwe Fuchs are the only Boro players to hit hat-tricks against City at home. Cloughie’s came in a 6-3 win in February 1960; Uwe’s in a 3-0 victory in March 1995 – the last ever hat-trick scored at Ayresome Park.
DID YOU KNOW? When Wes Burns scored a last-gasp goal for City against Boro at Ashton Gate in January 2016, it was the first goal against us in 897 minutes. We went into the game with nine clean sheets in a row, equalling the record for this division.

BORO ICONS From being at Valencia, in Rome with Lazio, Barcelona, then moving to Boro – that would seem like a crazy move to a lot of people. How did that come about? I was asked that a lot, not so much now but especially at the beginning from people close to me when I finally decided to sign. But I had it really clear from the first moment I spoke to Steve McClaren and he showed me the project and the players that were going to be involved. Like you say, it might seem a bit odd, but at that moment and time in my career I need something different. Middlesbrough fitted perfectly, going to a club that had a really ambitious project – rather than waiting for the big clubs to come calling, why not go to a club that maybe did not have the same history but was really chasing success? That’s where I saw myself, becoming part of the club’s history and putting them on the map – and that’s why I say people don’t ask me so much now, because they see what we achieved. After a difficult time in Rome in particular, is it fair to say the move was about enjoying your football again? That was part of the decision. I had Barca in between which I had enjoyed but that chapter had finished, and I wanted to continue playing regularly. For the project
14
Gaizka
at Middlesbrough we had quality players and were looking to play a similar style to the Spanish, quick passing football, and I was excited to be part of that. Steve McClaren said you were the club’s most important signing since Juninho. It must have felt good to have that backing to take the team to the next level? Middlesbrough had always had great players – Juninho Emerson, Ravanelli, Boksic... What they lacked in the past was maybe the project itself and the structure to allow those players to make the impact they had hoped for. I think when I got there, they had more of a whole, which also really helped me to enjoy my football and give as much as I did. It’s difficult to do things individually, I had teammates around me who were speaking the same language of football. How did you find the adjustment to English football, as at the time it had a reputation for being more physical than Italy or Spain? I found it easy! Especially compared to Italy. It was very intense – that surprised me in training and the first game, which I think was at Leicester away – but I was able to find space. Especially with the players we had, and it made it easier to make runs, find people
and unlock defences. The Premier League was made for attacking footballers. The fans really took to you at Boro, and saw what you were trying to bring to the team? Of course you have to work hard to improve, but I felt from the first moment I clicked with my teammates and with everyone. I remember getting the ball and always having options to create an opportunity, so I knew I could bring something to the team. I think the fans enjoyed that, that’s what they expected from me – the passing, creating and scoring goals. That vision on the pitch is what British fans love in a player. And in that first season, you won the Carling Cup and made history – you remain part of the biggest moment in the club’s history. It’s like it was yesterday! It was great for me, and I have great memories. At the time I still had hopes of playing for the Spanish national team, and it was more unusual then for a Spanish player to move abroad. In that final, I was playing for Boro and Bolton had two or three Spaniards, so it became a big game back home for that reason. I think I became the first Spanish player to win a trophy in England. I was talking with Bolo (Zenden) not so long ago, and we agreed that
we were better prepared in that game and it showed with the start we had. We wanted to win that game so badly, and we didn’t give Bolton a chance. The knockout competition was always going to be most important for Boro, and by winning that cup, I think a lot of people had to take their words back and they could see the potential of the project. It was one of my highlights, that’s for sure. There was an interview with FourFourTwo magazine where they made reference to a joke we’d made on Twitter, that winning the Carling Cup would be the highlight of your career. But despite what you’d achieved with Valencia and Spain, did Boro’s victory feel different and special?
Yes, definitely. As an athlete and a footballer, wherever I’ve been that was my aim, to be part of history wherever I went, and luckily I did it in most of those places. And it was one of the reasons I went to Middlesbrough. Winning the Carling Cup, all the ingredients made it special and even to be talking about it today shows how much it means. The fans were so passionate, so loyal to the club for so many years, so to be able to win something for them, the very first trophy, it’s one of the happiest I’ve been to give it to the fans.

MATCH-WORN SHIRTS RAISE THOUSANDS OF POUNDS An online auction raised over £6,000 as generous bidders clamoured to get their hands on a match-worn or match-issued shirt, or a mascot package. The auction began at kick-off of the game against QPR last Sunday and while the result wasn’t what anyone of a Boro persuasion wanted, fans were undeterred in their support for the Foundation and the chance to own a unique item as bidding continued through to Thursday afternoon.

DAY A SWINGING SUCCESS
It was the first time the Foundation logo had been on the front of the Boro shirts, with season-long sponsor 32Red generously allocating their space on the white band. The money raised will help the Foundation maintain a high level of provision for the communities of Teesside and East Cleveland, and occasionally beyond, not just in these troubled times. Programmes that help young and old, school leavers and the older members of society, those with disabilities, lonely, hungry without hope or the confidence to try and make things better. They will all benefit from the sums raised. Head of Foundation Helena Bowman thanked everyone for taking part: “Whether you won a shirt or the mascot experience, or were maybe outbid right at the end, thank you so much for taking part. the communities of Teesside in so many different ways, but we can’t do that without your help. “As well as the money raised, this has helped raise the profile of what we do, of what we’re about, and our work will continue for as long we can and where it is safe to do so.” Britt Assombalonga’s shirt received the highest bid, raising £429, with those of George Friend and Hayden Coulson not far behind with £357 bid for their shirts, Ashley Fletcher’s shirt raised £356 and Marcus Tavernier’s £355. MFC Foundation would like to place on record their thanks to the club for making this happen, especially kitman Peter Darke who had the responsibility of organising the shirts after the match, 32Red for their generous allocation of front of shirt space and auction organisers matchwornshirts.com

SAM OVERCOMES ADVERSITY TO SHOW WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED Sam Duffield is a remarkable young man who has overcome odds that often seem unfairly stacked against him. Far from backing down, or giving in as many might, Sam continues to fight and with a little help from MFC Foundation he’s still smiling. There have been six FIFA20 tournaments hosted by the Foundation, all for the participants who have been missing out on their social interaction and physical activity they normally get from PL Kicks programme. There has also been a joint inclusive FIFA tournament with Hull City – exclusively for registered PL Kicks disability participants from both clubs. Sam won both the Foundation U16 tournament and the joint one. He explains what it meant during this difficult time for everyone. “During Covid-19 having the tournament to play has kept me socially communicated with other people and has helped me with my frustrations I endure with my medical interventions. “This gave me an incentive to work towards being the MFC online U16 FIFA player as it has always been a dream of mine to become a football player for MFC which I have so much passion for.” Sam’s determination to succeed is clear for all to see, and admire, as he outlines physical problems that would get the better of many. “My disabilities, illness and medical interventions have always affected my ability to play for a team. I had a tumour at the base of my spine at 13 months old which left me fighting for my life and resulted in me having sepsis which led to me ending up with a neuropathic bowel and bladder and impaired mobility. “Only this year I found out in January that I have Type 1 diabetes which I have had to get to grips with and learn how to give insulin to myself. “This tournament has helped me so much and achieving being an online
player now makes me feel proud of myself and has meant a lot to me. “I am a season ticket holder with my family and I was buzzing to have won the tournament. I thank MFC Foundation for this opportunity and I look forward to playing online anyone wants to play.” If you have any questions regarding the PL Kicks programme, email liam.watson@mfc.foundation.co.uk

CAPTAIN TOM STARS IN RIVERSIDE MURAL Wasn’t it great to see Captain Tom Moore back in the limelight as the NHS celebrated their 72nd birthday last Sunday? To give him his new title, Colonel Sir Thomas Moore, granted under MOD protocol, entered the Guinness Book of Records after raising an estimated £33m for the NHS days before his 100th birthday. He was also made an honorary colonel early in a summer no one will ever forget. When fans are allowed back into the Riverside, those in the GRFZ will be met with an outstanding piece of work made by pupils from Skelton Primary School with Captain Tom at the heart of it. Walk from pitchside up the tunnel in the North East
Corner and you can’t fail to see the fruits of the labours of schoolchildren who were asked to make a collage with tiles, on which would be images of what they remembered from what has proved to be the early days of Covid-19. The concept was the brainchild of MFC Foundation Boro Bus coordinator Lee Harding who said: “I am really pleased with how it’s turned out, as were the children who helped. We wanted to keep it simple and left the ideas to them. “When we can all get back into the stadium we’d encourage as many as possible to go and have look, maybe get your photo taken next to it. “The pupils and teachers worked with great
enthusiasm and this will be a lasting tribute to the NHS – and Captain Tom, of course – and a reminder
of how everyone pulled together to help each other.”
‘THANK YOU’ LUNCHES CONTINUE IN EAST CLEVELAND
You can’t tell, but underneath the masks these ladies from East Cleveland Primary Care Hospital in Brotton were smiling from ear to ear after receiving a free lunch from Chef Matei Baran. MFC Foundation has been working with the MasterChef: the Professionals quarter-finalist throughout lockdown and each Friday hot lunches are delivered to NHS staff and key workers as a way of saying “thank-you” for what they have done and continue to do. That will take a step up this coming week when 180 meals will be delivered to school workers throughout East Cleveland who have worked with the Foundation throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. “It’s just a little something to say thank you, an appreciation for what everyone is doing,” says the Foundation’s operational support officer Charlie Bell. “They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, well yes there is and these are well deserved.” SUPPORTED BYBY SUPPORTED

AYRESOME MEMORIES This season is the 25th since we left Ayresome Park, our home of 92 years, to move into a new Riverside Stadium. SHAUN WILSON looks back at the old ground, its matches, players and stories...
A NINE-GOAL THRILLER
Despite defeat away to Charlton Athletic the week before, Boro were sitting fourth in the Second Division table as the 1959/60 season moved into its final third. Bristol City were the visitors to Ayresome Park and started the game brightly, attempting several spirited wing raids in the opening minutes. However, it was Boro who opened the scoring in the sixth minute when prolific striker Brian Clough found the net. In the 27th minute City left-back Alec Briggs brought down Derek McLean in the penalty area and Bill Harris stepped up to double Boro’s lead. Five minutes later McLean
scored a third but City pulled a goal back four minutes from the interval when Jimmy Rogers headed a brilliant goal. At the start of the second half the away side were the better team out of the blocks and Malcolm Graham reduced the arrears in the 54th minute. Boro then recaptured the initiative and Clough and McLean both grabbed their second goal in a scintillating spell midway through the half. The visitors got a third goal when Tommy Cavanagh scored a penalty, but two minutes from the end Clough completed the scoring to grab his hat-trick and Boro’s sixth goal in an entertaining game.
FLASH IN THE PAN
A rare bright spot in the otherwise disastrous 1965/66 season came in the home game versus Bristol City in March 1966. A crowd of 13,744 saw Jim Irvine score twice and Ian Gibson also get his
30
name on the scoresheet as Boro ran riot to go into the half-time break 3-0 up. Dicky Rooks grabbed a fourth after the interval, and despite two goals from City’s John Atyeo, Boro held onto win 4-2 to move the side into the heady heights of 16th in the Second Division. Unfortunately, though, the side struggled to gain any momentum from the victory and were ultimately relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in the club’s history. The death knell came just two months later after a 5-3 defeat at Cardiff City, despite an unlikely hat-trick from Dicky Rooks. The club took stock under manager Stan Anderson and roared back to Division Two at the first attempt just 12 months later.
CUP BLUNDERS
After coming through a trilogy of FA Cup games versus Hull City in 1967/68, Boro had been given a home draw versus fellow Second Division side Bristol City.
In a bad-tempered game, quality was at a premium and both the goals in the game were the direct result of defensive blunders. City wing-half Gordon Parr, in a moment of fatal indecision, sidefooted past his own goalkeeper to put Boro ahead after just eight minutes. Half an hour later Don Masson, later to be substituted, inexcusably pushed a square ball into the path of City inside right Chris Garland, who crashed in the equaliser from the edge of the box. Three days later Boro went down 2-1 in the replay at Ashton Gate with the hosts going on to play Leeds United in the next round.
PROMOTION PEDIGREE
Boro recharged their 1968/69 promotion batteries with a clear-cut victory over Bristol City.
The man behind the side’s return to form was big John Hickton, who recently had a transfer request turned down when he couldn’t get into the first team. Hickton clinched the points with two first-half goals, the first in the 18th minute and the second from the penalty spot four minutes from half-time. It got better in the second half when Derrick Downing buried his face in the goalmouth mud to head home a hard-and-low cross from George Kinnell in the 56th minute. Then on the hour mark Eric McMordie chased a lost cause and – after a mistake by Gordon Parr – the Irishman ran past the keeper to fire into an empty net. However, the side were robbed of the table’s top slot when Gerry Sharpe scored from long range two minutes from time, so had to be content with being behind Derby County on goal average.
BACK IN THE BIG TIME
New signing Andy Payton made an instant impact at Ayresome Park after signing in November 1991, but it was a man making his 300th firstteam appearance who earned Boro all three points versus a lively Bristol City side. Stephen Pears played a first half blinder making five magnificent saves to keep City at bay. This after Boro had taken the lead after just four minutes when Payton ran onto a Curtis Fleming through-ball, and then rounded the keeper to score. On 29 minutes Boro went 2-0 up when Bernie Slaven forced the ball home after Russell Osman had blocked a shot on the line. City pulled a goal back through Bob Taylor before Payton was carried off after he fell awkwardly. The tactical switch made Boro a much more potent force and – after Stuart Ripley and Robbie Mustoe hit the woodwork – Slaven grabbed Boro’s third when pouncing on the rebound after Paul Wilkinson’s header also hit the bar. City ended the game with 10 men after Osman was dismissed after a second booking for a foul.
Many thanks to the book Ayresome Memories, written by Eric Paylor and John Wilson, for help with anecdotes and research in today’s column.

BRISTOL CITY WHO ARE YA?
Bristol City were founded in 1894, and have played their home games at Ashton Gate since 1904. The club’s highest-ever league finish was second in the top-flight in 1906/07. They were FA Cup runners-up in 1909, and won the Welsh Cup in 1934 despite being an English team. The club have also won the second tier title once, the third tier four times, the Anglo-Scottish Cup once, and the Football League Trophy a record three times. The club’s nickname is The Robins – a robin featured on the club’s badge from 1976 to 1994 and from 2019 onwards.
AT THE HELM Dean Holden is in temporary charge following Lee Johnson’s departure last weekend. An experienced defender of over 400 games at 10 clubs, his previous managerial experience came during a stint at Oldham Athletic in 2015.

Korey Smith
HOW’S IT GOING?
WHAT TO EXPECT
City picked up their first win in 10 games in midweek when Hull City were beaten 2-1 at Ashton Gate. It brought to an end a ninegame run of two draws and seven defeats that led to Johnson being relieved of his duties. City had suffered four straight defeats after the season re-started, three by a single-goal margin. They are currently six points away from the top-six.
With Holden in temporary charge, it could be a new-look City we come up against. Like our own Neil Warnock, Holden has had little time to work with his players on the training ground, but the decision to appoint a “different voice” in the dressing room paid immediate dividends with
WHO’S WHO
Dean Holden
Jamie Paterson
City have plenty of experience and some real quality in their squad. Tomas Kalas is no stranger to Boro fans, as a promotion winner here in 2016, while Jack Hunt is another well regarded defender. Korey Smith pulls the strings in the middle of the park while Jamie Paterson scored and had an assist against Hull in midweek. Strikers Benik Afobe and Marley Watkins both stepped off the bench in midweek to emphasise the quality at Holden’s disposal. facebook.com/MFCofficial

the home win against Hull in midweek.
IT’S A FACT Bristol City are one of the few clubs to be managed by both father and son. Gary Johnson was the club’s manager between 2005 and 2010, before his son Lee took over in 2016 until his recent departure.
ONE TO WATCH Nahki Wells The ever-reliable Wells, now 30, has 18 goals this season – three in City colours after arriving in a reported £5m deal from QPR in January. The Bermudan international has been prolific throughout his career, particularly at Bradford and Huddersfield before a short spell at Burnley led to his move to QPR.
