MIDDLESBROUGH v SHREWSBURY TOWN

CARABAO CUP FIRST ROUND FRIDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2020, 5.30PM OFFICIAL MATCHDAY MAGAZINE FREE ONLINE

NEIL WARNOCK Good evening to everybody for our first competitive game of the season, this Carabao Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town. Shrewsbury are a team who have always done well in the cups, and I also remember going up there with Cardiff one pre-season and getting a proper pasting so I’m hoping we can give them more of a game this evening! The lads have done well in preseason. They’ve worked extremely hard and although we’re all disappointed we haven’t been able to bring in any signings beyond Grant Hall, I’m not too deflated at all. I just feel that sometimes you believe in fate and I’m sure we’ll get three or four players in over the next few weeks.

I’d like to welcome Grant who will be a super addition to the squad. When I had him at QPR he had a great attitude and the younger lads around him will relish playing with him. After tonight, we have no more “pre-season” games, and move on to what’s going to be a tough fixture next Friday away to a Watford team that will probably start the season as favourites – but at least you’ll be able to watch the game live, whether that’s on our live stream or on Sky. The attitude of the players since the end of last season has been fantastic and I can’t wish for a better response than we’ve had. Now we’ve got to put it into practice when the serious stuff begins. That’s what

myself and the staff are trying to achieve, and what we’ve all been working hard on. Finally, it’s been a terrible time with this awful virus and there’s been a lot of changes to life as we know it, but I am hopeful that it won’t be too much longer before we can welcome some of you back to the Riverside, and I can’t wait for you to come in and get right behind us. Be lucky, Neil

Neil Warnock unveils new Teesside Airport partnership Ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup Round One tie, we used Teesside International Airport to host the season’s first pre-match press conference. Speaking to local and national press via Zoom from inside the airport’s main terminal, the boss also announced a major new signing for the club – Teesside International Airport. The airport logo will feature on the back of our shirts for the 2020/21 season, and the sponsorship deal is the latest agreement in a long-running partnership between Teesside International Airport and the club. The club have been a huge supporter of the airport, with our new boss delighted that he is now able to leave the Riverside Stadium dugout and jet to his home in Cornwall direct from Teesside International using the Newquay service. The summer flights to Newquay proved so popular that, after just two weeks of operation, Eastern Airways had to deploy a larger aircraft to meet the demand. Also, due to the high levels of forward bookings, the flight has become a year-round service. The Boro manager said: “The airport has been an absolute life-saver for me and is one the reasons I’m here. It’s an hour and 10 minutes for me to fly home when otherwise it would be a six-and-a-half hour drive. “Teesside is a wonderful airport to use, and with the

service and destinations that are now on offer we’re all lucky we can have the best of all worlds.” Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “I have always said our airport is about more than just holiday flights – and hosting a football press conference is a first for us! “It was great to welcome Neil Warnock back to Teesside Airport today for the press conference. I know he and the club have been a big supporter of the airport, especially with our extremely popular Newquay service which they have used regularly, and this is another great way of giving us their backing. “The shirt sponsorship agreement is also huge for the airport. Middlesbrough FC is Teesside’s most well-known brand and the fact that Teesside Airport will now be seen by fans across the country can only be of huge benefit. “It has been a difficult few months for all airports, but we are fighting back with more domestic services – including a new Heathrow route – making us better connected to the world than ever before, and we are carrying out improvements to the arrivals hall and security which are supporting local jobs and businesses and ultimately making the airport a better place to be. “Boro have a 100 per cent record when flying from Teesside Airport, and I hope that continues this season as the club starts to fly up the Championship table!”

Neil Warnock with Teesside International Airport managing director Shaun Woods.

ON TEESSIDE TONIGHT

SHREWSBURY TOWN

This will be the 16th meeting, the fourth in cups but the first in this competition. We have recorded nine wins in all competitions with Shrewsbury winning three and three ending in draws... LAST TIME HERE  Our only previous meeting at the Riverside was in the FA Cup in 2012, Shrewsbury’s first appearance in the Third Round for nine years. The Shrews dominated the first half but didn’t take their chances, and just before half-time Marvin Emnes made them pay, scoring the only goal from a Malaury Martin cross.

WE HAD TO SIGN HIM  It was always written in the stars that we would sign Nigel Pearson – primarily to boost our survival chances if it all got a bit tight. Pearson was the Shrewsbury captain when they relegated us in 1986 and three years later he was wearing the Sheffield Wednesday armband when they too sent us down on the final afternoon.

QUICKEST STRIKE

DID YOU KNOW? THE ONE AND ONLY  Ray Hankin scored his only Boro goal in the league in a 3-1 win in March 1983.

 The 4,044 who turned out to watch our game against Shrewsbury Town in December 1984 represented our lowest ever league attendance to date. Sadly, such were our struggles at that time, that figure was eclipsed twice more in the coming weeks. facebook.com/MFCofficial

MFC FOUNDATION

APPLEBRIDGE PROJECT STEPS UP TO THE PLATE

One of the most ambitious and ultimately successful short-terms projects ever undertaken by MFC Foundation has reached its goal. Supporting an initiative set up by Applebridge CL, last Friday saw the last of a staggering 30,000 meals delivered across the region at the end of a six-week project designed to cover the majority of the school holiday period. “It has been a staggering operation,” reflects Head of Foundation Helena Bowman. “We’re so proud of and so thankful to everyone who has played a part in making this happen. Applebridge’s commitment has been incredible and we’re honoured they chose us as the vehicle to make their vision come to life. Quorn’s donations of sausages has been amazing and we

18

really appreciate that. Middlesbrough Council helped us identify areas in the town in most need; out in East Cleveland we had a lot of help pinpointing areas and the effort there too has been substantial.” Meals were prepared in the Riverside’s kitchens, packed and loaded into Applebridge vans and delivered to hubs in areas stretching between the Newport district in Middlesbrough to Skelton. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the volunteers from the

club, especially all the chefs, while the work of our staff and that of the Applebridge family has been exemplary and ensured this was a project that really did deliver. “It truly has been a team effort.” It is estimated that it has taken around 1,800 working hours spread across 30 days – five days a week for six weeks – to ensure the project’s success, what it set out to do, what it promised and what it delivered.

MFC FOUNDATION

A GRAND ACHIEVEMENT

MFC Foundation is well over £1,000 better off thanks to the efforts of five walkers and the generosity of their sponsors. Having seen first-hand the work of the Foundation and the difference it can make to the lives of so many, photographer Tom Banks wanted to help. Tom has photographed many Boro games at first and Academy level, as well as working on occasional projects for the Foundation. He came up with the idea of a sponsored walk linking Boro’s two main centres of operation, Rockliffe and the Riverside. After several weeks in the planning stages, Tom – along with the Foundation’s health coordinator Paul South, and massive Boro fans Kevin Leavesley, Karen Ross and Leigh Fisher – completed the close-on 19mile (30km) walk in just over five-anda-half hours, with the group raising a total approaching 1,200 when they 20

touched the Ayresome Park gates. There to meet them was Head of Foundation Helena Bowman, Gary Phillipson from BBC Radio Tees, ex-Boro star Neil Maddison who now works the club and the BBC Radio Tees, as well as their very supportive friends and family. “This was a fantastic effort from all involved,” commented Helena. “Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored them too, we like to think we can help make a positive difference to the lives of so many

across Teesside and you have all helped us to keep doing that.” As for Tom, a few hot baths later and pride has settled in to replace the stiffness felt after his exertions. “I just wanted to do something to help,” he says humbly. “I’ve seen the work the Foundation do and I wanted to help in some way. I never expected we would make as much as we have and have such a good time doing it. There was a lot of good chat along the way and a lot of money raised, not a bad way to spend part of your day is it?” There’s still time if you want to add a pound or two to the pot, all donations gratefully received and put to very good use. LOVE OF TEESSIDE INSPIRES ART COMPETITION ENTRIES

There were over 300 entries of all shapes and sizes. We saw canvases, computer-aided graphics, line drawings, models, oils, photographs and water colours. Entrants were asked to depict Teesside, how they saw it and what it meant to them. It’s fair to say the competition was both a success and an insight into the artistic talent on Teesside... The winner in the Over-18 category was Kevin Palmer for his depiction of Cochrane’s Foundry. The Under-18 winner was Barney Rhys Grant for his portrayal of the Transporter and love of Teesside.

“It was a fantastic art competition,” says Boro-fan and internationallyrenowned artist Mackenzie. “Thank you to everybody who entered. The entries we had were brilliant, there was just so much to choose from, we could have had a hundred winners. “The winners’ work really summed it up, you got the passion, the power and the strength of Middlesbrough the town. “This has warmed my heart, thank you very much.” The prize winners will receive four tickets to a Boro home game, when it is safe to return to the stadium and tickets are available.

Mackenzie will invite the winners to his Arthaus Gallery in Richmond, when he is there next, or a public event - again, when it is safe to do so. Arthaus Gallery will give each winner a Boro themed and framed Mackenzie Thorpe poster, which they can get signed when they meet Mackenzie and a tote bag containing Mackenzie gifts. Malcolm Hepper Framing will frame the prints.

Lingdale Primary School came fourth.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS ENCOUNTER S

SHAUN WILSON looks back on earlier meetings with tonight’s Carabao Cup opponents Shrewsbury Town...

FIRST MEETING

The first time Middlesbrough and Shrewsbury Town met was back in the 1961/62 season when the two sides were drawn together in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Excitement was high in Shrewsbury as the Third Division side were expecting a record gate for the all-ticket clash with 2,500 Boro fans expected to make the journey. The game itself saw Alan Peacock shoot Boro into the lead from a Billy Day cross after just five minutes. The home faithful were ecstatic when player-manager Arthur Rowley was fouled in the penalty box and the referee pointed to the spot – but his spot-kick hit the upright. Town were made to rue this miss when Peacock doubled Boro’s lead a minute before the half-time interval. Whatever Rowley said at the break worked as the home side roared back out and he himself headed his side back into the game after 58 minutes. The comeback was sealed five minutes from time when outside-right Mike Kenning ran onto a perfect pass from Rowley to crack

30

the ball into net to send the majority of the 14,534 crowd wild with delight at a 2-2 draw...

...AND THE SECOND!

The replay back at Ayresome Park saw the away side shell-shocked as Boro opened the scoring in front of a bumper crowd of 34,751 through Bill Harris after just 11 seconds. However, the Shrews gamely hit back and had the ball in the net on two occasions – but the referee ruled both Jim McLaughlin and Graham French offside. Veteran Arthur Rowley, who went on to a record 434 league goals in his career, nearly grabbed an equaliser just before half-time, but his shot went a fraction wide of the post. The second-half prompted a goal avalanche as the home side extended their lead in the 55th and 58th minutes

with goals from Eddie Holliday and Arthur Kaye. In the 75th minute Kaye got his second goal, but Shrewsbury reduced the lead when Rowley scored from the spot after Dick Neal brought down French. Holliday applied the coup de grace with a brilliant solo dribble and goal two minutes from time to earn Boro a 5-1 win and an away tie at Blackburn Rovers in the next round.

MISSED CHANCES

The 2011/12 season saw Boro avoid a shock in the FA Cup as Marvin Emnes strike ensured Shrewsbury’s impressive performance at The Riverside proved in vain. The away side had their chances – particularly in the first half, with the best one falling to Gareth Ainsworth, whose effort went wide of the mark with the goal gaping. Yet it was Boro who took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Malaury Martin crossed a ball towards the back post where the Dutchman showed neat control to bring the ball down before slotting past goalkeeper Chris Neal.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS Nigel Pearson’s career is well known for his time at Boro – but earlier in his career he served Shrewsbury....

Boro looked a completely different side immediately after the interval, with Bart Ogbeche forcing a save from Neal.

GAY MEADOW RELIEF

The final day of the 1984/85 season saw Boro travel to Gay Meadow, knowing they needed to beat Shrewsbury Town to avoid relegation to the Third Division for only the second time in the clubs history. There were jubilant scenes in the away end at the final whistle with Boro manager Willie Maddren hoisted onto the shoulders of the players after a turbulent 2-0 win. Goals from Peter Beagrie and Brian Laws sealed the game in Boro’s favour, but the side finished the game with only 9 men, after Beagrie and Gary Hamilton were both given their marching orders. The game proved to be Dutch midfielder Heine Otto’s last in a Boro shirt after four years of sterling service. We’ll also skip over the corresponding fixture exactly 12 months later, when this time Boro’s luck ran out and a 2-1 defeat DID see Boro slide into the third tier of English football...

Nigel Pearson started his playing career with non-league side Heanor Town before joining Second Division Shrewsbury Town in November 1981. He made his firstteam debut for the Shrews versus Oldham Athletic on the opening day of the 1982/83 season and went onto become a regular starter. His next two seasons were blighted with injury but he returned to become a key figure in the side before signing for Sheffield Wednesday for £250,000 in 1987. His time at Hillsborough was a successful one, captaining the side to victory in the 1991 League Cup final. He also skippered the side to two cup finals in 1993, but broke his leg in the League Cup semifinal, which ruled him out of both Wembley showcases. As the new Boro boss, Bryan Robson made Pearson one of his first signings in 1994 and immediately made him captain. He famously skippered the side to three domestic cup finals and two promotions, after which he retired in 1998. He has since become a successful manager, most notably at Leicester City and Watford, where he controversially lost his job in July 2020.

PLEDGE TO RENEW

SEASON CARD RENEWALS 2020/21

MFC can now confirm the process for those fans still wishing to renew their Season Cards for the 2020/21 campaign. With an anticipated capacity of around 10,000 and current sales standing at 7,900, we have approximately 2,000 Season Cards available to fans wishing to renew. The club has considered several options to ensure we maximise capacity at the Riverside in the fairest and safest way possible for the 2020/21 season. We have consulted with, and sought feedback from, representatives of fan groups including the Middlesbrough Supporters Forum during the process and taken forward the views expressed. We’ve also welcomed the EFL announcement that Season Card Holders who renew before the deadline will receive a free streaming pass for all home matches.

PLEDGE TO RENEW All 2019/20 Season Card Holders are invited to ‘Pledge To Renew’ at their Early Bird price. The Early Bird pricing renewal window re-opened at 2pm today (online only). Telephone bookings will be available from 10am on Monday September 7 and all bookings will close at 4pm on Wednesday September 9. Please note the ticket office counter will not be open. A computer-generated ballot will take place for the remaining 2,000 tickets – those fans who are successful

will have their renewal processed and will be informed of this by email on Monday 14 September. Those who are unsuccessful will be offered a season pass for the live streaming of all our home fixtures, and midweek away fixtures, in accordance with EFL guidance. Any further tickets that become available during the season will be distributed in ballot form to the unsuccessful ‘Pledge To Renew’ fans. ‘Pledge To Renew’ fans will later be issued with a pro-rata refund based on the number of games they were not allowed to attend. Fans who are unsuccessful in the first ballot and do not wish to receive a free streaming pass or remain in any further ballots should additional tickets become available can be refunded. Fans wishing to claim a refund should email their requests to ticket@mfc.co.uk no later than 4pm on Wednesday 16 September. It is strongly advised to help facilitate maximum capacity levels that all fans who are able to sit within their own social bubbles should do so following the guidance provided around this (maximum of six. from a maximum of two households). Supporters should email bubble requests to ticket@mfc. co.uk no later than 4pm on Wednesday 9 September. This process is only open to 2019/20 Season Card Holders who haven’t yet renewed. We recognise that some fans may

feel vulnerable in attending fixtures during these times and taking this into consideration, we can confirm that all 2019/20 Season Card Holders will retain their privileges and carry forward to 2021/22 irrespective of whether they renew for 2020/21. Loyalty points to be abolished for the 2020/21 season, all priority points from the 2019/20 Season will be frozen.

CREDITS Fans wishing to use credit from the 2019/20 season must do so via telephone, this cannot be done online. However, it is advised that fans with outstanding credit amounts request a refund at a later date due to the high volume of calls expected to the ticket office. We are currently in the process of fulfilling the current sales within guidance set and information for those fans who have applied for car parking will follow.

STREAMING A streaming pass for all home matches will be available to Season Card Holders during the period they are unable to attend matches due to the restricted capacity. All Season Card Holders will be eligible to receive free streaming access to midweek away league fixtures. Match-by-match streaming will be available at a cost of £10 in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the EFL.

We’d like to thank all our fans for the patience they have shown in recent weeks. 32

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTS...

SHREWSBURY TOWN WHO ARE YA? Shrewsbury Town were formed in 1886 and were elected to the Football League in 1950. The club has since competed in each of the lower three tiers of the Football League, in addition to the 2003/04 season in the Conference Premiern. It has also competed in the Welsh Cup, winning it six times. Between 1910 and 2007, the club was based at Gay Meadow on the banks of the River Severn; since 2007, the club have played at the New Meadow – a UEFA Category One stadium with a capacity of 9,875.

THE HISTORY BIT Shrewsbury’s halcyon days were arguably the 1980s when Graham Turner led them to the old Second Division and the likes of Chelsea, Leeds, Newcastle, and West Ham were among the teams to come unstuck

in league football at Gay Meadow. The Shrews also relegated us on the final day of the 1985/86 season. They were relegated from the second tier in 1989 and have yet to return.

AT THE HELM Experienced defender Sam Ricketts cut his managerial teeth at National League Wrexham in August 2018 before joining Shrewsbury four months later in the December. His playing career saw him clock up over 500 appearances, notably for Hull, Swansea, Bolton and Wolves.

At Shrewsbury’s former Gay Meadow home, such was its proximity to the River Severn that local coracle maker Fred Davies used to station himself in his coracles during games and would retrieve any stray balls which sailed over the stand and into the drink.

ONE TO WATCH Aaron Pierre Defender Aaron Pierre was named among the Shropshire Star’s leading performers last season for the Shrews. Captain of Grenada, Pierre is a leader at the back and also a threat with the ball. He scored four goals in 37 appearances last season, including a 25-yarder to secure the FA Cup meeting with Liverpool.

HOW’S IT GOING?

Sam Ricketts

Shrewsbury ended last season placed 16th in League One, with 41 points from 34 games. Memorably they held a young Liverpool side to a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup – but lost six of their 10 league games after that, winning just two until lockdown curtailed the campaign. facebook.com/MFCofficial
