MIDDLESBROUGH v QUEENS PARK RANGERS SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY 5 JULY 2020, 2PM
OFFICIAL MATCHDAY MAGAZINE FREE ONLINE
NEIL WARNOCK Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome my old club QPR, Mark Warburton, his staff and players. Unfortunately there won’t be any fans here. It might have been one of the few occasions that I wouldn’t get booed after I had a fabulous time there when we won promotion to the Premier League. It is strange not having the fans around but it’s something we have to do to get through this difficult period. Once again, we made it hard work the other afternoon at Hull after a good result at Stoke. We somehow managed to lose a game that was there for the winning, but that’s football and I know from experience that it’s going to go right down to the wire. Everyone else is winning
down there and I don’t expect that to change, so we’ve really got to put our own house in order. Today sees my old club coming and they’ve had a half-decent season, and I know how difficult it will be having played them before while I was at Cardiff. I was asked by Steve to come and help here and that’s what I’m doing. I’m trying my best with Kevin Blackwell and Ronnie Jepson to get sufficient points on board for Middlesbrough to retain our Championship status. I knew from day one it wasn’t going to be easy and the ups and downs of the first week have convinced me that is going to be the case. While it’s strange there being
nobody in the ground, I know all the Middlesbrough fans will be watching the live stream and I’ll be doing my utmost to get you the right results between now and the end of the season so that when you do come back in numbers you can get behind the team. I think it’s so important that the club retains its Championship status for the future. Finally, I’d like to thank everybody since I’ve been at the club. From everyone I’ve seen around, while social distancing, to the friendliness of the area, and the individuals I’ve met – I can’t thank you all enough, and it’s made me even more determined to help us through this difficult period. #UTB

We welcome Neil Warnock A CAREER OF SUCCESS
Neil Warnock arrived at Rockliffe boasting a wealth of experience in the game including a record eight promotion successes as a manager. Boro becomes the 17th stopping point for the 71-year-old, who first cut his managerial teeth at Gainsborough Trinity back in 1980. The first of his eight promotions came in 1987 when he guided Scarborough into the Football League. Two more followed at Notts County when he guided them from the third tier to the top division in successive seasons and he also enjoyed success at Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle. He enjoyed an eight-year stint at his boyhood club Sheffield United that culminated in him leading the Blades
Lieutenants join the new manager
back to the Premier League in 2006, where they stayed for one season before Warnock resigned after they were controversially relegated. His next job saw him save Crystal Palace from relegation to the third tier, but he was soon back on the promotion trail, leading Queens Park Rangers to the Premier League. His most recent success came at Cardiff City where he led the Bluebirds to the Premier League in 2018.
Neil Warnock has been joined at the club by two of his long-standing trusted lieutenants. Kevin Blackwell and Ronnie Jepson are reunited with Warnock at Rockliffe, the trio having recently worked together at Cardiff. The pairing both have a long association with the club’s new manager, having played for him before joining his coaching staff in later years. The 61-year-old Blackwell, a former goalkeeper with over 400 career appearances, was assistant to Warnock to Sheffield United before he followed his own career in management that saw him take Leeds United to within touching distance of a Premier League return. Blackwell also managed Luton, Sheffield United and Bury before rejoining Warnock at Queens Park Rangers in 2015. The 57-year-old Jepson was a prolific striker in a playing a career that included 36 goals in a century of starts for Huddersfield Town during Warnock’s tenure as manager of the club. Jepson, who had stints in charge of Gillingham and Bury, first worked on Warnock’s staff at Crystal Palace before joining him for spells at QPR, Leeds, Rotherham, and Cardiff City. The duo are joining Leo Percovich and goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne on the firstteam staff at Boro.

Retained List: youngsters to depart A number of our younger players will become free agents this week when their current contracts expire. Young professionals Mitchell Curry, Nathan Dale, Enes Mahmutovic, Layton Watts and Stephen Wearne are all departing the club; along with third-year scholar Nick Hood and second-years Harold Essien, Harry Flatters, Isaac Fletcher and Andrew Wilson. Mahmutovic is the only departure who has played first-team football for Boro, having made two Carabao Cup
appearances in 2018, while striker Curry had a loan spell with Inverness Caledonian Thistle last term. Wearne also tasted life with the first team when he featured in a number of preseason friendlies. With the Sky Bet Championship season now due to finish on 20 July – 20 days after the 30 June contract expiration date – a number of senior players who would otherwise be out of contract have agreed extensions to play the remaining games of the 2019/20 campaign for the club.
Out-of-contract players Adam Clayton, George Friend, Marvin Johnson and Ryan Shotton have all signed July extensions and will remain available for selection for our final seven games. Jonny Howson was the club’s other senior player whose contract was due to expire this week, but he has taken up the option of a further one-year contract extension (see below). Rudy Gestede and Daniel Ayala have both left the club with their contracts due to expire last Tuesday.
HIGH FIVE EARN PROFESSIONAL DEALS A quintet of Boro youngsters have all signed their first professional contracts with the club. Daniel Dodds, Harry Green, Jack Hannah, Joe Ridley and Jack Robinson have all taken another step on their career paths by putting pen to paper on professional deals after progressing through our Academy. The club’s Head of Academy Craig Liddle was delighted to offer the youngsters terms. “The boys have all deserved this opportunity,” he said. “Signing a professional contract is a big step for a young player, but as we always say, this is where the hard work really starts. “Yes, the lads have worked very hard to get here, but they must keep doing that and rise to the new challenges that lie ahead.”
Youngsters put smiles on faces Nathan Wood’s mum Jacqui and her team from ITU James Cooke Hospital have been overwhelmed by messages of support from our Academy boys. Jacqui said the images have helped to put a smile on the staff’s and patients’ faces during a very difficult time.
Howson takes up contract option Jonny Howson has taken the option of a one-year contract extension with the club. The 32-year-old is now under contract until 30 June 2021 after signing the extension. Howson has made 132 appearances for the club since joining from Norwich City in the summer of 2017, and is enjoying his best season in a Boro shirt. Having signed as a midfielder, the Leeds-born player has been utilised as a central defender and as a full-back this season, and former head coach Jonathan Woodgate couldn’t speak highly enough of his contribution to the team. Described as a “model professional” by almost all who have worked with him, Howson is delighted to extend his stay with the club.
MOST WATCHED We had the biggest number of supporters of any Championship club watching the live stream last Saturday. Over 10,000 individual streams were used to watch our 2-0 win at Stoke City. We also had over 12,000 individual steams the week before for the Swansea game equating to an estimated audience of around 17,000 Boro fans. Thanks for all your backing!

US Vs. THEM QUEENS PARK RANGERS Today is the 53rd meeting between the two clubs. Honours are even on 18 wins each with 16 ending in draws... LAST TIME HERE
A QPR FIRST
First half goals from Jonny Howson and Ashley Fletcher secured us a 2-0 win against QPR at the Riverside last season...
QPR had never won at the Riverside until their 3-0 success in February 2011. Their manager that day? Neil Warnock.
You can see the best of the action, here... A TRUE CLASSIC Our 3-2 win at QPR in 2016 proved a huge stepping stone in our quest promotion...
DRAWS AT A PREMIUM This fixture has not ended in a draw for 43 years – and has only been goalless twice, in 1973 and 1975.
Here’s how it panned out... LOCAL LAD IS BACK
SUPER SATURDAY
Jordan Hugill will be back at the Riverside once again, albeit in the colours of QPR this time. Dubbed the “Hemlington Hitman” along with the over-used “former Dickens Inn barman”, Jordan spent last season on loan with his hometown club before returning to West Ham last summer.
A 2-1 win in October 1982... With a new Boro chairman, secretary and manager all appointed on the same morning, and probably the only time in history that the visiting manager (one Terry Venables), was upstaged by the one about to take over, Malcolm Allison, sporting his fedora for the occasion.
DID YOU KNOW? When QPR won 3-1 here in 2014 it was to be five more years before we tasted defeat again at the Riverside after taking the lead. Ravel Morrison scored QPR’s third in the 90th minute.

NATIONAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING AWARD FOR ‘BOYS IN BLUE’ CLUB A ground-breaking scheme to encourage teenage boys to look after their mental health has won a prestigious national award. We support Unity City Academy and PCSO Lindsey Blackburn on a programme called Boys in Blue, an informal weekly after-school activity where the lads meet in a safe space allowing them to form friendships and talk about any issues which may be affecting their mental health. The initiative has now won the Health and Wellbeing category of the national AET (Academies Enterprise Trust) Remarkable Lives competition 2020. Foundation and he said: “It’s great to be recognised for the work we have been doing, but what’s even more rewarding is the difference we are making to these young boys’ lives. It’s so important that these lads feel they have a safe space to talk, make new friends and have fun in a safe environment.” The Boys in Blue club was the brainchild of PCSO Blackburn who explained why she had done it. “I set up the club to reinforce the message that there’s no stigma attached to mental health issues and that it’s okay to open up if the teenagers are struggling with mental health, relationships, cyber-bullying or drug and alcohol issues. “The work I’m doing with UCA and MFC Foundation is all about building trust with these young men, to break down barriers and challenge any perceived stigma regarding mental health. “The support from both parties – and the students - has been second to none and I’d like to thank them all for this. We all agree that the young

people who take part have already seen great benefits. “Although sessions haven’t been able to run as usual under the Covid-19 period, this award has come as a real boost for everyone involved.” Among other activities in the club, the young men can play Xbox and table football and occasionally listen to guest speakers. Lead for UCA’s Retreat, Tracey Connor, commented: “The Retreat is extremely proud of being a part of Boys in Blue. The Retreat looks after the mental health, social and emotional needs of all students in UCA, so this fits in perfectly with Boys in Blue after school club. “The club has gone from strength to strength and is really making a difference to our young male students. They are becoming much more confident in talking about mental health issues and with each guest speaker they are made aware of how other people have got through their own difficulties. Also about clubs, charities and agencies that can help support them if needed.”

‘STEPPING UP’ PROJECT ADDS A ‘WALK OF FAME’ Transitioning from primary to secondary school can be a daunting experience, with many questions asked as youngsters take what can be a scary trip into the unknown. MFC Foundation are the pioneers of the Stepping Up Transition project and during the week two members of the Foundation made a national presentation to other clubs in the EFL Trust. The project has been running for four years and is recognised as the industry standard. Starting in May 2016 after consultations with schools and local authorities, it was recognised that the gap from primary to secondary school was too big for some vulnerable young people. The project initially started with three secondary schools and 12 primary schools; it has now grown to four secondary schools and 28 primary schools. As a result of the Covid-19
pandemic and subsequent closure of schools, staff have created a menu of support for young people to access to aid them with their transition to secondary school. This year in particular is going to be especially challenging, so the importance of having a ready-made mentor is going to be even more beneficial. This year, many Year 6 students will miss out on the traditional celebrations that serve as a rite of passage and signal an end to their time in primary schools. This is sad for these children, as they will not get the opportunity to reflect upon the wonderful things they have achieved during their time at primary school, as well as share their favourite memories and funny moments with their friends and teachers.
So, we have created the Stepping Up primary school walk of fame, where Year 6 students can design their own Walk of Fame star and decorate it how they please to celebrate their time in primary school coming to a close. We encourage students, parents and teachers to share via social media completed Walk of Fame stars so that this year the Year 6 students still have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements in primary school. For more details and a free transition pack, please email steven.bell@ mfcfoundation. co.uk Or look here on the Foundation website: https:// mfcfoundation. co.uk/coursesand-programmes/ education/ stepping-up/

TODAY’S MATCH-WORN SHIRTS TO BE AUCTIONED FOR MFC FOUNDATION Today is a landmark game for two reasons. After away games at Stoke City and Hull City, this is the first home game for Neil Warnock. It’s also a game where our fans will see a slightly different Boro top as seasonal shirt sponsors 32Red have donated their front of shirt to MFC Foundation as a one-off gesture aimed at raising substantial funds for the charitable arm of Middlesbrough Football Club. Every one of the match-worn shirts will be up for auction, with the funds raised donated straight to the Foundation via the website matchwornshirts.com
Immensely proud, this will be the first time the Foundation has been on the front of Boro’s shirts. This is a unique opportunity as these shirts will not be worn again and obviously there can’t be another first home game for the new manager. The auction will start from kick-off at 2pm. *After the game, all shirts will be screened and passed through a UV process first used by Real Madrid to remove any traces of DNA. The process is germi-cidal and is also known as Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation and is applied to each shirt inside and out.
PLEASE HELP US TO HELP YOU
This photo was taken outside the GP’s practice in Loftus, but it could have been anywhere in East Cleveland or indeed across Teesside. For it is a scene which has been replicated throughout lockdown, as we strive to reach and help those in need and sometimes, as is the case here, just to thank those who have been helping us. Delivering a hot meal is just part of
22
what we have done from the earliest days of Covid-19 taking a grip on this country as, working with Chef Matei Baran, we deliver hot and cold food throughout East Cleveland, to care homes, hospitals and individuals. The bigger picture reveals big numbers, through Teesside and East Cleveland we have delivered in excess of 25,000 food parcels, made up from donations and purchases, 2,400 of those have been hot meals. Over 230 treat packages have been delivered to care workers, 130 PPE deliveries made and over 400 calls
made to elderly and vulnerable Season Card holders. We’re doing what we can where and when we can and we would love it if you could do the same and help us to help others. We would be grateful if you could make a donation into our virtual bucket. But only if you can afford it, we insist on that. Thank you.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS WHO ARE YA?
QPR were founded in 1886 after the merger of Christchurch Rangers and St Judes Institute. After their original home of Queen’s Park, London, they played home games at many different grounds, until settling into Loftus Road, renamed Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium at the beginning of 2019/20. The club’s achievements include winning the League Cup in 1967, and being FA Cup finalists in 1982. Their highest ever league finish was in 1975/76, as runnersup in the top flight.
AT THE HELM Mark Warburton took over 14 months ago. His began his coaching career in the Academy at Watford, before moving to Brentford in February 2011, serving as a coach and sporting director until being appointed manager in December 2013. He led the club from League

One to promotion to the Championship and finished the following season with the club’s best second-tier placing for 80 years. He managed Rangers, winning the Scottish Championship and the Scottish Cup in his first season before joining Nottingham Forest in March 2017 and QPR in 2019.
HOW’S IT GOING? The Hoops lost their opening three matches since restarting the season. Single goal defeats to strugglers Barnsley and Charlton were followed by a midweek reverse to Fulham, after Boro lad Jordan Hugill has fired QPR ahead. With 50 points on the board, Warburton’s side be looking for one more win to secure their Championship status.
WHO’S WHO
Mark Warburton
Warburton’s side have often opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, although last time out at Fulham reverted to a back three. Liam Kelly is the regular keeper, with former Brentford man Yoann facebook.com/MFCofficial
Barbet joined at centrehalf by Grant Hall or Conor Masterson. Angel Rangel offers experience at fullback, where Ryan Manning and Todd Kane are also regulars. US international Geoff Cameron has established himself in a deep midfield role alongside Dominic Ball or Luke Amos. Creative midfielders include Eberechi Eze, Bright Osayi-
Samuel and Ilias Chair and Marc Pugh. Former Boro loanee Jordan Hugill leads the line.
WHAT TO EXPECT Goals! Rangers are the highest scoring side outside the top three – but only Luton Town and Hull City have conceded more.
ONE TO WATCH Eberechi Eze England U21 cap Eze, now 22, started his youth career at Millwall before moving across London to QPR. He impressed on loan with Wycombe Wanderers in the first half of 2017/18 and became a regular at Loftus Road after returning in the January. Quick on the ball with an eye for a pass, he has 12 Championship strikes and eight assists to his name this campaign.

AYRESOME MEMORIES This season is the 25th since we left Ayresome Park, our home of 92 years, to move into a new Riverside Stadium. SHAUN WILSON looks back at the old ground, its matches, players and stories...
BORO SWITCH TO ORANGE
An orange shirt was a hastily arranged necessity for the Boro team, after we were forced to wear it when visiting Loftus Road to face QPR in March 1983. Due to a spate of last-minute postponements due to poor weather, the Match Of The Day cameras decided to travel just around the corner from their studios in Shepherd’s Bush to cover the game. Shirt advertising was still in its infancy and the BBC wouldn’t allow sponsors to be shown in any televised game. This meant Boro were unable to wear their McLean Homes shirts which they brought with them, and instead had to borrow some of the home side’s training strips! The game on QPR’s infamous plastic pitch itself proved to be a nightmare for the Boro side. The Hoops quickly went 2-0 up in the first half, and although Mick Kennedy renewed hope with a converted spot-kick on the stroke of
30
half-time, the home side scored four unanswered goals after the break to send Boro into the relegation zone. (The picture shows QPR wearing the shirts themselves in an away game.)
READING MATTER
In 1978, QPR visited Ayresome Park with both sides struggling to kick start their First Division season. The game saw the visitors come away with a shock 2-0 victory, thanks to a fine display by mercurial winger Stan Bowles. However, the game is best known for an iconic shot by Evening Gazette photographer Brian Robinson... QPR had just won a corner in front of the Holgate End when the programme of the day was thrown onto the pitch. Bowles picked it up and proceeded to read it along with teammate Ian Gillard. A low crowd of just 12,822 saw Rangers come away with another away win at Ayresome Park. Rachid Harkouk scoring after just four minutes with a Peter Eastoe goal on 70 minutes clinching the points. The result, though, ultimately proved of no great value to QPR, as they were relegated at the end of the season.
EARLY CUP MEETING
The 1912/13 season saw Boro drawn at home to Queen’s Park Rangers in the FA Cup Second Round. A decent crowd of 27,774 were present to see First Division Boro take on the West London non-league side. With Joe Hisbent and Don McLeod on the injured list, reserve full-back Allan McRobbie was recalled to the side. Rangers started the game strongly but the home side scored first when George Elliott notched from a free-kick. James Birch equalised from the penalty spot after a handball infringement but Ninty Eyre pounced shortly after to see Boro regain the lead. Ten minutes after the restart Archie Mitchell brought down Jackie Carr just outside the penalty box. Carr took the free-kick himself but saw Rangers goalkeeper Charlie Shaw pull off a great save. Unfortunately for the away side
custodian Elliott was quick off the mark to put in the rebound. Shortly afterwards Birch pulled a goal back in identical circumstances but Boro held on to earn an away tie at Burnley in the next round. Home programmes from this era are very rare but featured (below left) is one such one from that home campaign, along with a team group photograph (above) from that season.
MID-’70S MEETINGS
Pictured here are programmes from two top-flight games at Ayresome Park between the clubs. The first is from the 1976/77 season when relegation-worried QPR proved to be the better side on the day and came away with a 2-0 victory. Rangers midfielder Don Masson played particularly well against his former side and it was he who set up Ron Abbott for the first goal after 29 minutes. In the 58th minute Stuart Boam
hooked the ball off the Boro line where after it had hit the post, but Man of the Match Masson followed up to head home and wrapp the game up for QPR. The second programme is from the season after, when Rangers again took a first-half lead – Martyn Busby scoring a minute before half-time. Boro played a lot better in the second half and nine minutes from the end, Graeme Hedley hit the equaliser through a crowded Rangers goalmouth when most Boro fans had settled for a defeat.
BACK IN THE BIG TIME
In 1988 Boro were enjoying a return to the top-flight for the first time in six years after successive promotions attained under inspirational boss Bruce Rioch. Against QPR in November, Mark Brennan scored his first goal for Boro and earned them a fifth consecutive win. Brennan, a £375,00 buy from Ipswich Town, made his mark in the
first half with a brilliant left-foot drive into the corner of the net. Boro were well on top in the opening 45 minutes, with Boro goalkeeper Stephen Pears being virtually unemployed in the Boro goal. After the interval, Boro held firm as Rangers came back into the game. Trevor Francis was showing plenty of his old speed with darting runs on both wings. Mark Falco then came close on two occasions, shooting tamely at Pears. Boro, however, were still looking dangerous and both Colin Cooper and Bernie Slaven saw close-range shots being blocked by Rangers’ stopper David Seaman.
Many thanks to the book Ayresome Memories, written by Eric Paylor and John Wilson, for help with anecdotes and research in today’s column.
