White raises $6m at start of 2012
I
N JANUARY 2011 the music analytics website Next Big Sound was named most innovative B2B company at the midemlab competition. In September of that year, Next Big Sound CEO Adam White was named one of Businessweek’s Best Young Entrepreneurs in America. In December, White was listed by Forbes as one of the 30 most-talented under 30’s in the music business. Back at midem one year later and fresh from having raised $6.2m for his company, this time Alex White is on the jury for the 2012 midemlab competition. Speaking to the midem News, White said that while technology has transformed

things completely for the music industry, “the underlying methodology of how the music industry operates and human nature has not changed”. He added: “I think there is opportunity to survive and flourish any time you notice that there is a discrepancy between how people operate and what technology now allows people to do.” The recently Next Big Sound State of Online Music Report found that there were 64 billion new plays, 3.5 billion new fan connections, and 16 billion new profile views recorded in 2011. “And the numbers show no signs of slowing down,” White said. “That is a staggering amount of activity that can be tracked faster, and more accurately, than ever before.” But

he had words of warning: “In a world that moves faster every day, I think that the music industry must always remain hypervigilant. For example, the consumer experience afforded by Spotify, Rdio, Mog etc. was a huge leap made last year, but with major artists withholding streaming rights, it threatens to disrupt the entire experience.”
HE INAUGURAL midem festival starts tonight in the Chapiteau Croisette, a custom-built 3,500-seater marquee situated in the car park of the famous Palm Beach nightclub. The new event features three nights of concerts from international stars and up-and-coming artists, and is open both to delegates and the general public. Tonight’s festival line-up features Imany, Skip The Use and Selah Sue performing

Tonight’s line-up includes Canadian and indie acts at Morrison’s Irish Pub, a showcase of Austrian music, Austrian Music Box, at Sparkling, a Jamendo night in the Black Pearl, yet more indie acts at the DaDaDa, and Chris Assaad is performing at the Fnac store on Rue D’Antibes.

Saturday 28 January 2012
The new music ecosystem Bruno Crolot, Reed MIDEM’s new director of music markets, has been charged with shaping midem to the new music ecosystem — which, he said, “is broader than the industry itself”. He explained the strategy
MIDEM has been radically restructured. Why? THE IDEA was to challenge each and every part of midem, to check that it was still relevant to the music business and still delivering value to its customers. The new midem had to reflect the new music ecosystem, which is broader than the music industry itself. That meant keeping music as the driving force of the show — its fuel — while reaching out to new communities of non-music technologies, brands and artists. A good example are the social-media companies, which are bringing great tools to the music industry, allowing it to better engage with its audiences and grow artist awareness. We also addressed brands, which now stand as real business partners for artists and labels, using their tracks in marketing campaigns. Last, we built a content programme for those we call ‘artist-entrepreneurs’, signed or unsigned. These artists want to learn how to drive their careers, engage with their fans, and understand the new monetisation models. Targeting all these communities has been a real challenge, as they are outside the core music industry that we have served for decades. Meanwhile, we did not want our long-time customers to feel midem was moving away from them, and from music. The feedback has been very good from all the segments that we now include in
the midem community. Nearly 250 artistentrepreneurs are attending as delegates, with brands, agencies and iconic companies also taking space at this year’s show. Who, for example? Nokia is both a sponsor and an exhibitor this year, which has not been the case for some time. Amazon, Spotify and Omnifone have also taken space, whereas in the past they have been present only as conference speakers or visitors. A very positive sign regarding the core business is that Warner Music and EMI Music are reinvesting in midem. Both have office space on the exhibition floor in order to hold meetings inside the Palais. Is live music centre stage? Live music is definitely a priority. We also want midem to be much more of a city experience, with concerts all over Cannes. On the live scene, this year’s big innovation is the inaugural midem festival, taking place in a 3,500-seat venue next to the Palm Beach. It’s produced by the French promoter Alias and features three great acts a night on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. And for the first time, this midem event, which is free to delegates, is open to the paying public. Then there is midem off, a programme of over 70 gigs taking place in bars around Cannes, where emerging acts will perform for both midem delegates and the public.
We are also organising a Taiwan Night, showcasing among others Mayday, one of the biggest bands in the region. In addition, we have the gala Classical Night — again, open to the public. We wanted something fresh and so we have joined forces with Harrison Parrot, the classical-music management and artistpromotion organisation. The night will be hosted by 2011 BRIT Award-winner Alison Balsom, the British trumpeter, and will also feature Behzod Abduraimov, and Mari and Hakon Samuelsen. What guided your choice of artists? For the midem festival, we wanted to position the concerts around indie, poprock and electronic. We also took into account the kinds of artists local people would be willing to pay to see. That’s why we have included French acts, such as Skip The Use, Brigitte and Orelsan, alongside emerging international artists, such as The Ting Tings, 2manydjs and Selah Sue. For midem off, we worked with our customers, many of whom were looking for exposure for their artists. What has changed in terms of the exhibition? We have moved most of midem to the best exhibition space in the Palais — the Riviera Hall and the Lerins. Here, there are three new zones: the D2F Camp, where artist-entrepreneurs can meet with music
decision-makers; The Innovation Factory, dedicated to technology; and The Hub, where networking events will take place. Then there is the fourth edition of the midemlab competition, which has proved a great launch platform for many successful start-ups, including Soundcloud, The Echo Nest, Next Big Sound and Songkick. This year we will have 30 finalists pitching projects in three categories: Music Discovery and Recommendation; Marketing and Social Engagement; and Direct-to-Consumer Sales and Content. Following the success of last year’s midem Hack Day, we’ve expanded this event to include 30 developers, designers and hackers, tasked with creating new musicrelated apps in just 48 hours. For brands and agencies, we’ve created the first midem Marketing Campaign Competition in partnership with Contagious. The results will be presented during Visionary Monday, which will provide delegates with a look into the future, focusing on how to engage with audiences in a world connected by music. And we’ve lined up some inspirational thought leaders for the conference programme, including Saatchi & Saatchi’s Kevin Roberts, Coca Cola’s Wendy Clarke, Rovia’s Mikael Hed, Facebook’s Dan Rose, GogaOM’s Om Malik and DJ Mark Ronson. It’s an exciting and eclectic line-up that reflects the positive changes that have gone into midem 2012.

The new-look midem is welcoming delegates from a wider number of industry sectors than ever before. As midem 2012 was set to open, a number of key figures from the different sectors answered the question: What’s your tip for surviving and flourishing in the new music ecosystem? Bas Grasmayer, head of information strategy, Zvooq Listen! There are a lot of preconceived notions about how to do business as an artist or label. I think in this non-linear, interconnected environment it’s essential to place yourself in the middle of your fans and listen so that you can understand them — just like you understand the friends you’re in touch frequently. The best opportunities come from being connected and understanding. That’s how you get people to spend money on you to please themselves — as opposed to getting them to buy your CD as a type of artist-supporting charity
Doug Scott, president, Ogilvy Entertainment
Seth Jackson, managing director, [PIAS] Media Don’t presume the brands will pick up your bill. Do engage directly with creative technologists. Make sure you have some young bright sparks in your team — and listen to them when they talk crazy future talk
Simon Wheeler, director of digital, Beggars Group Focus on the music, if the music is good enough you have a chance to do some business, if the music is not good enough you will most likely fail. If anyone presents something that sounds too good to be true, it probably is

For artists: don’t rest on your laurels. You need to always be developing your art and a variety of revenue sources. Don’t assume that how you make a living today will be how you make a living tomorrow. Nimbleness is key
For Coke, our mandate for music activation is that it must be new, innovative and delivering an experience that neither Coke or our partners can do without the other. Our key goal is to ensure shared value for all constituents, so making sure that wherever our brands and music come together, great things happen. That requires us to take a different approach, collaborating with established and emerging artists to create breakthrough content and experiences that can be shared by consumers around the world … Ian C Rogers, CEO, Topspin The answer to this question is much longer than we have space or time for here so I’ll pick one: Your cost structure has to be in line with the new ecosystem, not the old. Follow the lead of labels like Secretly Canadian who have a low-cost model not reliant on radio

BlueVia hacks out niche in rara.com sets sights on labels revenue-generating APIs T
B
LUEVIA is sponsoring midem’s 2012 Music Hack Day as part of a yearlong drive to publicise its range of API-based services, which include a virtual credit card that enables micro-payments on platforms. “We launched the public beta of BlueVia in March 2011 and we are currently busy building awareness by becoming involved in events such as the midem Music Hack Day,” said Tom Curtis, BlueVia developer and marketing manager. “In the music sphere, our API [application programming interface] for online payments is particularly useful for people who don’t have a credit card, especially on the Android OS, where otherwise you have no way to pay for purchases.” The second midem Music Hack Day brings together 30 developers from around the globe, who have 48 hours to conceptualise, collaborate on and construct a brand-new generation of applications. For artists, labels, managers and delegates, the Music Hack Day offers a chance to become involved in an exciting area of new technology, as well as offering them the opportunity to propose hack ideas. In the lead-up to the event, the best ideas were shortlisted by the Music Hack Day organisers. Those selected to go forward are given the chance to pitch their ideas directly to the hackers, who are drawn from a range of disciplines and companies.
BlueVia’s Tom Curtis: “building awareness”
HE LICENSING team from Omnifone, the UK-based cloud-music service provider, is out in force in Cannes, seeking more content for its various digital-music operations, including rara.com, the new international streamedmusic service. Launched in December, rara.com has already hit the music-industry headlines. “We are now at midem to engage with existing and new label partners, and talk to them about our marketing programmes to build the rara.com brand,” said Gareth Carter, rara.com’s director. Already present in 20 countries, including several major European markets, the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Singapore, subscription-based rara.com offers more than 10 million tracks from the majors and
some independents. The songs can be played online via PCs and on smartphones. However, Omnifone, which licenses the music for the services it powers, including rara.com, is reported to be still negotiating with Merlin, the global agency representing the digital rights of independent labels. Merlin complained in the media that Omnifone launched rara.com without acquiring the necessary license for independent repertoire. It argued that this was shortsighted, as independents are estimated to represent one-third of the global music market. The UK artist Adele, for example, currently the world’s biggest single recording artist, is signed to the independent music company Beggars Group. “We’re working closely with Merlin to resolve any licensing issues,” Carter added.

Kaas in Cannes
France’s biggest international female star is set to release a new album and embark on a 45-country world tour. And today she’s at midem...
A
FTER a career stretching back to 1987 and LP sales of close to 20 million, Patricia Kaas is back with an album of covers of the songs of France’s other female icon, Edith Piaf. France’s biggest international female star will be presenting one of the prizes at the NRJ Music Awards tonight, as well as holding a press conference at midem tomorrow. Under the title Kaas Chante Piaf, the singer has put together a collection of 25 of her favourite Piaf songs, including several that audiences might find surprising. “There are quite a few songs that people know, but I also chose a few — like Les Blues Blanches, T’es Beau, Tu Sais and Avec Ce Soleil — that are very special to me, and some that also lend themselves to a bit of theatricality,” Kaas told the midem News. “The aim is to produce a seamless spectacle, with scenes from her life running through the performance to complement the songs. On a personal level, what I intend to do is to express myself and my experiences through her songs, but at the same time, I really want to shine a light on her and what her life was like.” Her previous LP Kabaret (2009) showed that Kaas has grown to become an all-round performer, but it was the release of her autobiography L’Ombre De Ma Voix at the beginning of 2011, as well as starring in the film Assassinee, that have had the profoundest effect on the singer’s current direction. “Putting together the autobiography meant that I learned certain things about myself which I can draw upon, but having to play the part of a mother whose child is killed in Assassinee was really hard,” Kaas said. “The role is very dark, and staying true to the character was a genuine challenge. But those two experiences gave me the courage and confidence to take on Piaf’s songs.” Kaas will be promoting the new LP with a series of press appearances over the next month, followed by 10 concerts in 10 capital cities — including London, Paris, New York, Seoul, Moscow and Montreal in November this year, followed by a 45-country world tour and the release of Kaas Chante Piaf in 2013.

IMZ’s Patay looks to social media to bring new business to classical
C
ELEBRATING yet another year of partnership with midem, global audiovisual music and dance association IMZ will be showing previews of 400 new musical programmes during the event. “We’ve now been working in partnership with midem for 28 years, and we are excited to be presenting so much new audiovisual programming in the form of three- to five-minute clips, in order to provide an overview both of what’s new and also what is coming up later in the year,”
IMZ secretary general Franz Patay, said. Alongside the screenings, Patay is also keen to see how the market shapes up for IMZ’s 170+ members, who work predominantly in the classical sector. “It will be interesting to see how much business is generated by our presence here, and of course I am hoping that the rights holders, distributors, producers and composers that we represent make a lot of good deals,” Patay said. “On a personal level I am also very keen to explore ways to grow our au-
dience using the power of social networks, and to find new ways to generate income, because there hasn’t really been anything new happening for classical music in this area for some time. Even though there are artists like (violinist) David Garrett who make great use of the digital world, the majority of artists still need to adapt to it.” Adaptation is something that Patay also hopes to see among the non-classical audience: “We already have a programme of open-air events to promote classical music and culture, but to really get people to understand it, you need to show them that it’s all about emotions, that it’s not boring,” Patay said. “And I’m very interested in finding ways to use new media to do that.”

GERMAN pavilion
Ministers add voice to German Way of Music REFLECTING its status as Europe’s biggest recorded-music market, Germany is making its presence felt at midem 2012. With 61 exhibitors from across the industry spectrum, the German Pavilion offers a one-stop shop for those interested in the latest repertoire, catalogues, productions and videos from the third largest music market in the world. Adding weight to Germany’s midem presence are several high-proďŹ le political and industry ďŹ gures, including Bernd Neumann, minister of state to the federal chancellor and federal government commissioner for culture and media; HansJoachim Otto, parliamentary state secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology; Dr Harald Heker, CEO of GEMA; and Dagmar Sikorski, president of DMV, the German music-publishers association. The pavilion — branded as The German Way Of Music — will play host to a GEMA and DMV reception on Sunday afternoon, attended by minister Neumann. GEMA is also hosting a lunch on Monday, at which state secretary Otto will make the opening speech. The German Pavilion is co-organised by the Ministry of Economics and Technology, the German trade-fair association AUMA and DMV.
New rules needed for copyright in the digital age, GEMA’s Heker says

curtain rises on midem 2012. “The use of digital content still occurs much too frequently at the expense of the artist — in other words, the people who made the internet attractive in the ďŹ rst place,â€? Heker said. He added that “new rules of the gameâ€? are needed for the handling of IP in the digital age: “The administration of copyrights increasingly has to do with use across borders. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to create both new forms of co-operation between societies and a reliable legal framework.â€? Heker welcomed the proposal for a EU directive to set common regulations for the administration of copyright, which is expected to be adopted early this year. “It should simplify the cross-border administration of copyrights in the online area and make it possible to create European ‘copyright brokers’,â€? he added. From GEMA’s viewpoint, Heker said such a legal framework would be a valuable instrument — and not only because it would lay the foundations for fair competition and greater legal protection. “It would also be conducive to the legal online market, be favourable for the development of licensing models capable of meeting future demands, and anchor the role of societies in a changing environment to a new, sustainable foundation.â€? He added: “Without a European initiative, copyright owners cannot expect appropriate compensation in future for the use of their works on the internet.â€?
VALERY Gergiev, artistic and general director of the legendary Mariinsky Theatre, is said to be the world’s busiest conductor — and he is certainly one of the most feted. But the Russian maestro has nonetheless found time to drop into midem to address delegates at today’s IMZ Networking and Welcome Cocktail. Gergiev’s visit is a ďŹ tting start to midem 2012, one of the highlights of which is a classical programme focusing on new talent from around the world. Gergiev comes to midem with Mariinsky Theatre recording company EuroArts.

Vinyl does the business for Bertus
Joe Cocker on the cover of the midem news, 1977
VINYL might be considered obsolete in the digital age, but Netherlands-based Bertus Distribution, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, believes the format is set for a renaissance. Via its label Music On Vinyl, Bertus recently clinched a deal to release vinyl classics by Joe Cocker, Tom Waits, Queens Of The Stone Age and Bob Marley among others recorded by Universal Music. The Music On Vinyl label has already released more than 400 titles in the two years since its launch. So 40 years after starting its business, when vinyl ruled the music-distribution landscape, Bertus is once again generating revenues from the format. “Although many wholesale or distribution companies have stopped trading in vinyl, the volumes have increased a lot in the past two years,” said Andre Huizer, sales and acquisition manager of Rotterdam-based Bertus, who has been attending midem for 20 years. “It’s not only the older consumers who are buying it again, but younger people are also discovering it.” He continued: “We’re getting more requests from companies interested in releasing their products, old and new, via Music On Vinyl. So we’re convinced it’s not hype, but a rediscovered format.”

ILLE Hillekamp, CEO of German music publisher Grand H Music, said that ever since GEMA started collecting royalties from clubs and discotheques about four years ago, publishers like him have benefitted. Royalties from disco-pop music have compensated for the slow decline in physical music sales over the 35 years he has been attending midem. Since he first started coming to Cannes in 1978, Hillekamp said the number of record labels to which he could license his master recordings has declined. “I used to have 25 labels that I could approach but, in the last 10 years, I’m happy if I can find six,” he said. However, he continues to thrive because performing-rights royalties from radio and public venues have, in contrast, soared. Grand H Music songs have been international disco-pop hits thanks to German act Die Atzen, and his sub-publishing deals with US companies representing interna-
tional stars — including Rihanna, Katy Perry and Taio Cruz. “I’ve been very lucky to have these artists appearing regularly in the top 10 in the GSA territories,” Hillekamp said.

Gresham recalls 40 years of music and friendship
D
AVID Gresham has been coming to Cannes for 40 years. But the founder of South Africa’s leading independent record company still remembers the positive impact his first years of attending midem had on his music business. “I shall never forget the vibrancy or the friends in the industry I have made since 1972,” he said. The founder of The David Gresham Entertainment Group recalls signing a worldwide deal with Carrere Records for the album Stingray, recorded in the 1970s by the rock band of the same name. “I have strong memories of the signing to Carrere Records and seeing the act charting in ma-
jor territories,” he said. Since then, Gresham has seen the positive influence of digital technology on the global industry — and the damage inflicted by digital piracy. Gresham started out as a DJ and was, in 1969, the only South African DJ to be allowed to interview John Lennon. “As a drive-time DJ, I was composing songs, but they received no interest from artists,” he added. “That literally forced me into producing the first track on my own.” The legendary Zomba Music Group co-founder Clive Calder, who was EMI Music’s A&R manager at the time, picked it up. “He released it for me and it was an instant top-five smash,” Gresham said.

Organic Funk strikes chord at Disneyland

ACKSTAGE Productions is at midem to spread the word about Organic Funk, described by company founder Steve Thomson as “musical purists with something to say and a pure, raw way of saying itâ€?. Blending contemporary rock with a funky groove and a hint of retro, Organic Funk is fresh from their ďŹ rst European tour, which culminated with a concert at Disney Village Paris. Backstage recorded the per-

A TV special is also being planned around the event. “The ‘concertmentary’, as we like to call it, features a collection of the band’s own material, plus cover songs from the Disneyland Paris event,â€? Thomson said. “It’s designed to entertain, while giving the audience an inside look at the band’s musical and social inuences.â€? The DVD is available through The Orchard.

‘Music is the great winner’ in Radio France/SPPF pact
R
ADIO France and the French phonographic producers’ association SPPF have signed a landmark agreement that will see Radio France host shows on its website that were previously broadcast on its radio service. The agreement permits Radio France to provide a download service of the catalogues of the independent acts and labels featured in its programming.
Listeners will be offered an on-demand service of unlimited streaming and podcast downloads, lasting for one year after a show’s original transmission. “Music is the great winner in this agreement,” said Jean-Luc Hees, directorgeneral of Radio France, who stressed the deal is “fully consistent” with Radio France Group’s new-media strategy. He added: “We are the first radio group to be able to offer our music program-
ming via unlimited downloads for a year.” “On behalf of independent producers, I welcome the signing of an agreement that will allow Radio France to develop its digital offering through the rich catalogues of SPPF members,” said Jerome Roger, general manager of SPPF.

IMPEL breaks the £1m barrier IMPEL — the initiative launched at midem two years ago to simplify the way in which independent publishers license music to digital services in Europe’s complex multiterritory market — has collected more than £1m (€1.19m) in royalties since its launch. Aimed at publishers with Anglo-American repertoire, IMPEL was instigated by the UK collecting society PRS For Music, which is participating in Tuesday’s Authors’ Societies panel The Cloud… Is It Just A Licensing Issue? Its aim is to give independents as much clout as the majors when licensing music to digital-music stores. Now, IMPEL’s roster of publishers comprises 16 independents, including Bucks Music, Truelove Music and Eagle-i Music in the UK and Netherlands-based Fintage Music. It also clinched its first US-based member, Spirit Music Group in New York, in January. “The important online monies we have re-

Bopler and Bubble launches further MXP4’s game plan M
XP4, the social music gaming company, is launching two new social music games at midem — Bopler Tap Tour and Bubble Music. “Bopler Tap Tour represents a major step
in the development of MXP4’s social music gaming portfolio,” said MXP4 CEO Albin Serviant. “It invites players to tour the world by playing music games city by city. Users get to experience ‘playing live’ to a

crowd of fans as they progress in the adventure, gather more fans and unlock bigger venues in which to play.” The game allows players to move up the music ladder through a series of ‘gigs’, sharing with and competing against their friends via Facebook. Using the same format as previous games, the new edition gives users access to a vast back catalogue of music, including hits from LMFAO, David Guetta, Far East Movement, Gorillaz, Fall Out Boy, Tiesto and Robbie Williams. As a result of MXP4’s global partnerships with leading labels and publishers, a catalogue of hundreds of licensed tracks is, for the first time, legally available in a social gaming format. Bubble Games is already the most popular and fastest growing online game destination on Facebook — and Bubble Music is the latest addition to the family, with MXP4 adding its trademark twist of music integration to this popular game. “The growth of the Bopler brand through the creation of this new game, Bopler Tap Tour, and the addition of Bubble Music, one of the most successful online games of its genre, confirms our leadership in the new social music game category,” Serviant said. He added: “Confidence in our brand continues to grow as music labels and pu-

Spinlet set to make a big noise in Africa
T
HE LAUNCH of Spinlet, Africa’s latest digital distribution service, which debuts this February with more than 200,000 tracks, is being celebrated on Monday with a Spinlet-hosted showcase of African music. Spinlet Night, which takes place at the DaDaDa, will feature two of Africa’s hottest hip-hop stars, Naeto C and Paul G, as well as the rising soul and R&B star Sesu. Headlining the event is the renowned DJ Jazzy Jeff, who will be playing songs from the Spinlet catalogue, including tracks from Ice Prince, P-Square, 2face Idibia and Tiwa Savage. Spinlet is supported on the most popular smartphones and is available for free download via Android Market, Blackberry Store and the Symbian platform. “We have partnered with an amazing catalogue of artists, mobile carriers, payment providers and brands to ensure our users get a quality music experience,” said Spinlet founder and chief operating officer Sami Leino. “We are confident that users and artists alike will agree that this is what sets us apart as Africa’s top mobile music application.” With 3G networks in many of Africa’s main cities, Spinlet is initially targeting urban consumers. “We will also be focusing on university campuses, where there are wifi networks and serious concentrations of
potential customers,” Leino said. He added: “In the lead up to the launch, our Lagos office has been conducting a survey and I’m delighted to say that people are

very excited about Spinlet. And perhaps most importantly, the reactions to the user interface have been very positive.” Ǜ load services operating in South Africa. But in most of the countries in which it is launching, Spinlet’s main competition comes from pirated CDs sold on street corners. “We are the only service dedicated to working against piracy with structured deals in the artists’ favour,” said Spinlet CEO Eric Idiahi. “We want to create value for our users and revenue for the artists.” Spinlet’s Sami Leino: “a quality music experience”
