User Persona
Chirag Murthy Age : 24 Software Engineer Chirag has joined work at google, bangalore and stays 4 kms away from the campus. His timings are not fixed and sometimes ends up working late hours and miss the company bus service. He carries his laptop and I-pad in his bag, to his workplace. His parents suggested him to buy a nano, but he prefers to buy a bicycle for daily commuting to his workplace in the busy urban traffic.
Key areas Storage Safety Traffic Day and night ride
Storage was found to be the primary concern for most of the city riders. Users prefered to carry their bag over shoulder as they did not consider the back carriages secure enough to carry their expensive laptops or other belongings. User may prefer to carry their belonging in front of them where they can see it even while riding.
Vidhya Mohan Age : 18 12th std student Vidhya lives 5 kms away from her school in Delhi and use her sister’s old ladybird bicycle to commute to school and tution afterwards. She wants to go for a new bike which is stylish and suits her personality. She carries a couple of books, cell phone and i-pod in her bag daily. She doesn’t like to carry her bag on the back carriage because she has to frequently look back to check if it is safe. So she always carries her bag on her shoulder while riding in the busy city.

SURF PAD Brief :
To Design a SurfPad for THULE for safe transportation of surf boards and can fit both square and wing bar, also should be easily mountable without removing the load carrier feet, and to design a suitable packaging which allows a tactile product confirmation and understanding.
Collaborators : Benjamin Pedrick Daniel Dakoda Tsiuri Okoropiridzi Sahar Fish
Surf Pad Design TED - MINT 2014
The Brief
Surf Board
Surf Pad Cross bar
The current Thule surf pad in the market, shown above is made of a cylindrical foam with a slit, wrapped inside a nylone fabric. It requires the load carrier feet to be removed to slide it over the bar and is secured in place by tightening the chord on either side around the bar.
THE BRIEF : Thule square bar
Thule Wing bar
1. Universal solution to fit both Wing and Square bars. 2. Easy to mount withut removing the load carrier feet. 3. Enable safe transportation of surf board. 4. Packaging to allow tactile product confirmation and understanding. 5. Brand visibilty on the Product. Load carrier feet

Concept failed in usability parameter
Final Concept The final concept uses two sets of zipper rails on either side of a fabric coated foam sheet to fasten it over square and wing bar respectively using a reversible zipper.
MATERIALITY Material Inspired from the wetsuit used by surfers , which uses fabric caoted Neoprene foam and heavy duty zippers fasteners. This concept has the potential to relate the product more to surfing.
Surf Pad Design TED - MINT 2014
Final Design and Packaging
Surf pad mounted on square bar
Packaging using nets to allows the customer to touch and feel the material which is same as the wet suit he use for surfing, this connects him to the product quickly.
Surf pad mounted on wing bar

Final Prototype and Exhibition
Scored 5/5 in the final evaluation. Feedback from THULE : “ Our favourite. Wise choice of Material - feels relevant for surfing related product. Product is easy to use and looks good on both Bars

The Product Body
Vettikko is an innovative, simple, lightweight dispenser for a 1â€? wide sello tape designed to simplify the tiring process of ďŹ nding the end, cutting and pasting the tape, which the user has to go through while using a sello tape. Vettikko can be mounted over the sello tape, unlike the conventional table top dispensers widely available in which the tape has to be mounted over the dispenser. Once mounted vettikko can be used till the tape is complete.

Prototyping and Testing
A cad model of the concept was designed in SOLIDWORKS and was used with the rapid prototyping machine, which made a 3d model of the concept by fusing layers of composite powder. Resin coating was also given for a good finish. The blade was prototyped using a flexible strip cut out from a can. This prototype was then tested on a 1 sellotape. All the renderings were made using KEYSHOT.

Research - Visit to Kanpur Blind School User Persona’s
Insights * Blind children takes one month to become familiar with a new environment. * They require Assistance during initial period. “Athletic” Himanshu
* They Create mental map of the space by counting the number of steps.
Age 6, fully blind Day Scholar
* Doors, windows, stairs, walls, water cooler, taps, the sounds they hear..etc are their reference points while navigating.
“I am in the first standard and I have a lot of friends. Everyday my dad drops me in the school . I know every nook and corner of this school. I run around and hardly ever fall. We play cricket and I am one of the best players in school. I play better than Kohli. I have my own phone and has all the latest songs in it. I also help navigate the students who have lost their way. I am much cautious outside the school compound and uses my guide cane.”
* They loose their sense of orientation very often. * They face difficulty in identifying obstacles and when any changes are made to space arrangements they are familiar with.
A study of existing navigation aids for blind.
“Cautious” Ravinder Age 12, fully blind, Hosteler.
“Responsible” Geetha Partially blind Maths Teacher
I have just moved into this new school and hardly know any place. I find it difficult navigating in this new environment and most often depends on my friends. As I am not using my cane inside the compound, I lack confidence too. I identify places recognizing the doors, pillars , windows , water cooler etc. Initially I used to count my steps for navigating from one place to other. I’ll also start running around soon.
I have been teaching in this school for the past 7 years. These kids are fun and at the same time naughty. They know every nook and corner of this school and even jump from one terrace to other but we advice them to use their cane while outside the campus. The newly joined kids take time to learn the place and we need to assist them during the initial days.

Brainstorming, Task flow and Final Concept
New orientation to the next reference point is given.Once th user aligns to new orientation next no. of steps is given
Gives an initial sense of direction and orientation, number of steps to next reference point Gives alert about the stairs and also the number of steps
A simple application based on footstep counter and compass available in mobile phone, which can be used by both blind and sighted person for navigaion. The application enables the sighted user to record map for an indoor space and upload to a server, which can be accessed by the blind. blind Video call connects the blind to a volunteer for guidance in case of emergency.
