Fresh flower winners are family-owned businesses Lisa satayut for the DaiLy News

Adapting to the needs of different generations is just one reason why two familyowned flower shops continue to flourish in the community. Lil Pear Tree and Smith’s Flowers tied for the best place to buy fresh flowers in the Midland Daily News’ annual Readers’Choice competition. The owners of both are deeply rooted in the community and have managed to defy the depressing family business survival rate. Catering to both young, old When Gwen Malone, the second-generation owner of Lil Pear Tree, relocated last year, she decided to ditch the old flower cooler in exchange for one that customers could access themselves. “That’s the first thing that changed,” she said of the one-block move to 222 E. Main St. downtown Midland. Instead of ordering an arrangement of fresh flowers, Malone noticed younger customers enjoyed creating their own design. Now customers, if they want, can pick and choose from the self-serve cooler to create their own fresh flower arrangement. Mark Smith, the third-generation owner of Smith’s Flowers, 2909 Ashman St., noticed younger customers gravitated towards a simpler, but yet higher-end arrangement where less is more. Smith said older customers mostly stick to traditional flowers like daisies, carnations and baby’s breath while the “younger, more hip” customers go for newer varieties that have been developed through the years. “Rather than five dozen carnations, they (younger customers) spend the same amount on higher-end flowers,” Smith said. Family ties Both Malone and Smith grew up watching their parents run the family business. Smith’s grandfather, Rolland Smith, opened the flower shop in 1948, making it Midland’s oldest family-owned flower shop. It was later taken over by Smith’s dad, Donald Smith. After Donald retired 10 years ago, it was handed down to Mark Smith, who has worked at the shop since he was a child. Only 12 percent of family businesses survive into the third generation, according to the Family Business Institute. Smith’s daughter also works at the store but the verdict is still out on whether she will someday take over, making it a fourth generation business. Only 3 percent of businesses continue into the fourth generation. Gwen Malone’s parents, Joyce and Rich-

At nine years old, she was old enough to work at the shop but was mostly tasked with sweeping the floors. Malone couldn’t wait until she was older and “tall enough” enough to wait on customers. About 30 percent of family businesses survive into the second generation. While there has been some talk of one or both of her daughters taking over the business someday, Malone said she wants them to follow their own path, even if it means leaving the family business. But that doesn’t mean her children aren’t required to help out. Malone’s oldest daughter recently received her driver’s license and is now making deliveries. “It’s a rite of passage in our family; once you get your license you start making deliveries,” Malone said of her daughter. Both Smith and Malone would like to thank their customers for the support through the years.

Pinecrest named “Best Assisted Living Facility” JohN keNNett jkennett@mdn.net

After being named “Best Assisted Living Facility” for the Daily News Readers’ Choice Awards, Pinecrest Farms has taken another significant step in its remarkable turnaround. “We’re going to provide good care of your mother, father, sibling,” said Pinecrest Administrator Joe Blewett. “They’re going to have good care, we’re going to provide social interaction and you can go back to being a family again. We’re going to take on the burden of care giving and the logistics that have hampered families as people age.” Blewett was hired this past January for the adult care facility located at 413 N. Homer Road. “I came in and listened to the staff, residents, to the county staff, Midland County Board of Commissioners and DHS board,” said Blewett. “I just collectively took all the information and slowly, but surely implemented one thing at a time.” One of the initial changes was to the administrative structure with the hiring of Business Manager Robert Maxwell and Director of Nursing Ronda Cunningham. “It is not a structure that we just pulled out of the air,” said Blewett. “It is what I’ve worked with in the past. Our business manager can focus on the revenue side of things: budgeting and ordering. Then Ronda, who has over 30 years of experience, has been able to come in and give the staff the support they need and the residents the care they need.” As the Daily News sat down with different residents, it was evident they were pleased with the care. “(Blewett’s) leadership has meant a lot to me,” said threeyear resident Jan. “I’ve very pleased that he is here. When he came on I’ve realized how

much easier my life could be.” It was very evident the comfort level that Jan had with Blewett as she teased him. “I would change a few rules, but my vote only counts 49 percent. Joe has the other 51 percent. But, Joe cut all the rules in half. So, he is working on it,” joked Jan as she turned and gave Blewett a light-hearted, sly glance. Six month resident “Gin” Didier agreed. “I like the people, especially Joe,” she said. “He took us on a trip to Great Lakes Loons game. I get to go to Big Boy once a month. One of the staff takes you and sits with you.” Pinecrest sits on 160 acres of land with a campus that offers multiple outdoor recreational opportunities in a setting just five miles west of downtown Midland. “I think the grounds are outstanding: the countryside and the forest and the pond and the birds and animals,” said Jan. “The stars at night, you can see the lights, there are not city lights. During the day it is quiet.” In 2010, the county built a new facility, with private rooms and semi-private rooms. The complex includes a common area with a pool table and a large-screen television, Internet-connected computer, library and large aquarium. “I like the fact that you can move around and go where you want to go,” stated Beverly Wentworth, a one-year resident. “It’s a nice place. Everything is clean and well cared for.” The results have been impressive with a census around 53, which is a significant increase over the 44 on Jan. 14, 2014. “We’ve got a lot of different church groups coming in. There are golf cart rides, outings, like the Great Lakes Loons, fall color tour.

We try to keep it a healthy, safety first and we try to keep it a fun atmosphere for the staff and residents,” said Blewett. “With all the dice players, we have a new game table and pet therapy through Dr. Isaacoff. He is a certified chiropractor in the area.” Partnering with local organizations has been a key. Kiwassee Kiwanis sponsored a Kentucky Fried Chicken day in July. The Chippewa Nature Center has come in and done some presentations for us. Bringing music into Pinecrest has been the staff of The Toni and Trish House along with The Sunshine String Band and the Lighthouse Orchestra. National Honor Society students have visited Pinecrest for presentations. “During the interview process what a lot of people wanted to see was not just marketing and P.R. but education of what this great facility is and the county millage and helping people understand what it is,” said Blewett. “So, that has been my goal. I’ve been graciously hosted by churches, service organizations, just connecting with people throughout the community and help educate people. We’re trying to build as many partnerships as we can.” The highlight of the summer was the Pig Roast where Pinecrest hosted over 200 residents, staff and people from the community. “We anticipated 125 people and had over 200 people to that,” said Blewett. “I’ve empowered and challenged the staff to come up with new ideas. One of the staff shot actual fireworks off. So, we had a Fourth of July celebration.” For more information on Pinecrest call: (989)832-6634 or visit: co.midland.mi.us/ PinecrestFarms.aspx

Looking for a mouthwatering burger? Head to Ruby Tuesday in the Midland Mall. Voted “Best Burger” by Daily News readers in the Readers’ Choice contest, the restaurant offers their signature burgers in a simple, fresh, American dining atmosphere.

“Everything is made fresh here, everyday,” said Midland Ruby Tuesday Manager Joe Laisure, who has been at the Midland location for two years. “Everything is cut fresh that day for the burgers: tomatoes, lettuce.” Tops on the list of burgers for the chain that has almost 800 locations nationwide is the pretzel burger, which comes in four different choices: spicy jalapeño,

with pepper jack cheese, jalapenos and chipotle mayonnaise; bacon cheese with applewood smoked bacon, melted cheddar cheese, and bacon mustard mayonnaise; portabella crispy onion, a duo of portabella mushrooms and Swiss cheese, served with chipotle mayonnaise and crisp onion straws; and a black and blue See “Burger,” Page A7

Hopkins now works alongside his grandson, who shares first and last name. They enjoy working side by side and feel that this is a great example of how Irish’s is important across the the spread of generations, both in the clientele and staff. “I started cutting hair in 1960,” Hopkins (senior) said. “We just try and do the best we can and always treat everyone the same.”

Servinski Sod Service voted best snow removal Matthew wooDs mwoods@mdn.net

Anyone who lived through the last Michigan winter is sure to appreciate prompt, thorough service from their snow removal professionals. And with the reputation Servinski Sod Service has earned over the years, it should be of no surprise to see them the winner of the Readers’ Choice Award for snow removal in the Midland Area. “We’ve been at it for 47 years,” said Joe Servinski. “We take care of our customers.” Servinski said the company is currently running about 30 units during the snow season, and they manage to keep all of these teams busy when the snow flies. During the particularly brutal snowfall this winter, the owner said his crews worked tirelessly to keep businesses and residences as accessible and safe as possible.

“We did that for a while,” Servinski said with a laugh. Servinski said a lot of his business comes from word of mouth, especially when the snow flies and people see the Ser vinski crews clearing pavements all over town. “We have no shortage of inquiries for work,” Servinski said, laughing. One customer with a lot at stake when the snow begins piling up is the Midland Mall. Operations manager Dan Irvin said the mall and the many businesses who use the parking area have come to depend on Servinski’s snow removal expertise, especially over the course of this year’s brutal weather. “The service is top notch,” Irvin said of Servinski’s Sod Service snow removal work. “The quality of their work and their responsiveness is just superior.” Irvin said when he sees the snow begin to fall, he knows it won’t be long before

the Servinski equipment will be along, making the parking area safe and accessible for customers. “Joe is a great guy to work with and he and his crews are very professional,” he said. “He does a great job.” Irvin said one more thing about Joe Servinski and his services that has kept the Midland Mall a long-time customer. “ When the man ( Joe) shakes your hand, you know that he is going to follow through on something,” Irvin said. “That is something I really appreciate.” When asked what he thought was the key to maintaining a successful business, Servinski didn’t hesitate with his answer. “Service and quality,” he said. For more information about their snow removal operations, along with their year round services, give Servinski Sod Services a call at (989) 835-4810 or visit them on Facebook.

Helping clients with issues has Smith & Co. CPAs on top Pati LaLoNDe for the Daily News

Since 1998 the staff at Smith & Co. CPAs, have been resolving financial problems for their clients. “We are honest with our clients,” said Paul Card, staff CPA. “We talk to them and try to help.” The staff offers help for a variety of financial issues, from accounting on a monthly, yearly or daily business to tax problems for both businesses and individuals. They do it well, say readers of the Midland Daily News, voting this firm best CPAs in the

annual Reader’s Choice Awards. “We are very grateful for our clients for the support they’ve given us,” said Card.“They keep coming back. We’re also grateful for the privilege of being in business in Midland.” Clients come back to the office at 110 E. Grove St., for a variety of services offered by the Card,Wayne Smith and staff accountant, Debi Horswill. “It’s a great honor to be selected,” said Card. “I know there are a lot of CPAs in Midland, and it’s really wonderful that people would think that much of us to vote for us.” Smith & Co. will help guide

customers through the frustrations of dealing with the IRS. “We try to ease issues,” said Card. “If there are problems with the government, we contact the government and try to resolve the issues by finding out what our clients need to do and get them the best resolution to go forward and hopefully minimize their taxes.” But that is only a portion of the financial services offered. Bayside Home Care strives to provide continuity of care Lisa satayut for the Daily News

You won’t find a revolving door of contracted staff at Bayside Home Care. The in-home caregiver agency goes the extra mile when it comes to protecting their elderly clients, which means only employing the most competent, reliable and caring one-on-one staff. For the first time Bayside Home Care, 5103 Eastman Ave., was chosen as the best home care agency in the Midland Daily News’ annual Readers’ Choice competition. All home health aides are employees of the agency which means they undergo an extensive screening process, are bonded and insured. This also means that clients won’t have to worry about who is going to show up at their doorstep to help out on any given day— it will always be the same caregiver.

The business, owned by Gary and Kim Vogel, opened six years ago after the couple saw a need in the community for an agency that could provide continuity of care. “We had a need in our family and we never found the standard of care we needed … it created a spark in my wife and me,” Gary Vogel said. Caregivers are matched with clients and meet beforehand to discuss concerns, and also to see if the two are a good fit. “We can make changes until we find the right fit,” Gary said. Besides continuity of care, Vogel said the employees, dubbed the “Bayside team,” work to build relationships with clients based on respect. Caregivers always refer to their clients using their last names. The agency offers a variety of services including meal planning and preparation, transportation, errand running, light housekeeping, medica-

tion reminders, help with bathing and assistance with bill paying. Gary said it’s the staff that sets Bayside Home Care apart from the rest. “There’s no way this (award) would have been possible without our caregivers, office staff and our administrator Michele Belson. We really work as a team,” he said. The agency also was recently recognized by the national quality management program, Home Care Pulse, after clients and family members of clients were anonymously surveyed. The positive feedback earned the agency the best in-home care honors for 2014. Bayside Home Care provides services in Midland, Bay City and Saginaw counties. It’s not only the human staff,

that gets raves from clients, but also the resident greeter, Zeke. Great Hall successfully adapts to growing needs of community Lisa satayut for the Daily News

With a changing clientele and twice as many weddings, the Great Hall Banquet and Convention Center has adapted quite well to the growing needs of the community through the years. “When we started we had a lot of fraternal organizations and conventions,”

said Mike Dunn, general manager. The 30,000-square-foot convention center took top honors in the 2014 Midland Daily News’ annual Readers’ Choice competition for the best reception hall/ banquet facility. Besides an influx of weddings, the facility has become a popular venue for high school proms. Providing personal event

coordinators and highly trained service staff keeps customers coming back to the facility, located at Valley Plaza Resort, 5121 Bay City Road. “It’s neat we are getting a lot of weddings from young women who attended prom there five or six years ago,” Dunn said. “We also see families with their second or third child getting See “Banquets,” Page A13

Brad Vander Vliet, of Park Place Homes, was awarded the Readers’ Choice award for best Realtor.

Vander Vliet picked as top real estate agent toNy LasCari tlascari@mdn.net

Real estate agents are hard working people, including this year’s Midland Daily News Readers’ Choice top pick Brad Vander Vliet of Park Place Homes. “I have a lot more respect for Realtors now than I did prior to being one,” Vander Vliet said. “They are real hard working folks.” With five years in the industry after a career with Midland Public Schools, he said he enjoys putting a variety of skills to work for his clients. Vander Vliet helps people buy and sell properties, and also handles property management. He puts in at least as many hours into his work now as he did as a school administrator, he said. “I’ve really enjoyed what I do,” he said. “The biggest aspect is helping folks.” Sometimes his work includes some counseling buyers on what types of homes they can expect within their budgets and helping to narrow down what they want in a property.

“I think that’s part of the satisfaction of being a Realtor: Not only defining what they want, but seeing it through to the end,” Vander Vliet said. “I think that’s part of the satisfaction of being a Realtor: Not only defining what they want, but seeing it through to the end,” Vander Vliet said. It also means being available when clients are able to meet. “I think you have to be willing to be available to folks,” he said. “With a lot of people you work with in real estate, the times they’re free to work with you are not normal working hours.” Real estate is also about building trusting relationships. Much of Vander Vliet’s work is in property management, which involves working with property owners and tenants to keep both happy. “I think you have to be

willing and able to deal with a lot of different folks and personalities,” he said. Vander Vliet was surprised to be the Reader’s Choice winner, and he credited Park Place Homes for training and guidance that has helped him succeed. “I really feel I owe the recognition to the company I work with and for,” he said. “It’s an honor. A surprising honor, but it tells me that I’ve been doing some things right and have some supporters out there. That’s always gratifying.” Coming in second in the category was Denise Schneider of Ayre/Rhinehart Realtors. Third place was a tie between Ashley Bromley and Carol Ostergren, both of Ayre/Rhinehart Realtors.

Gardai named best attorney keLLy DaMe kdame@mdn.net

Attorney John G. Gardai aims to educate clients on estate planning and other matters, and that willingness to explain and answer questions has earned him a Readers’ Choice award. Gardai earned his law license in 2008, and began his practice. In 2009, he moved the law office of John G. Gardai, PLC, to its present location at 4604 N. Saginaw Road, Ste. L. He specializes in estate planning, landlord/tenant, real estate, business organization, contracts and other general civil matters, as well as at times working on an appointed basis in Bay County child neglect matters. “I l i k e w o r k i n g w i t h people, sitting down and explaining things to them,” Gardai said, adding that means making the legalese into plain English. Sometimes, all the legal jargon can be overwhelming. “There are very few people who have an understanding of estate planning,” he said. The majority of people really only need a will and power of attorney, rather than a trust. Gardai begins with a standard explanation of the process and what is necessary, then ensures clients understand by answering their questions. “I just had a client who needed two or three session to do that,” Gardai said, adding another client wanted to go line by line through the paperwork to understand the document. “Anybody can just fill in the blanks on a will,” but he wants to make sure clients understand the point behind the blanks.

Fun Fact: Delcie Glazier hadn’t even so much as enjoyed the benefits of a massage before deciding to attend school to become a massage therapist. As is turns out, she was made for the healing work, and has been voted the best in the Readers Choice awards for the second year in a row. Glazier has been an independent massage therapist at the Magnifique Salon & Spa, 605 E. Wackerly St., for six years. Her independent status means she owns and runs her own business, with her own hours, locations, insurance, products and client base. She pays rent for the space at the salon and is in charge of her own marketing. “It’s really nice to do that,”

After learning at the Rising Spirit Institute of Natural Health — where her massage instructor kept asking if she’d done this before — Glazier returned to Michigan, and later earned her credentials as an esthetician. “I love it,” she NEIL BLAKE | nblake@mdn.net said of her work. All in the family at Maple Hill Nursery Beth BeLLor for the Daily News

Maple Hill Nursery is a family affair, and Chuck Servinski wouldn’t have it any other way. “What’s great is I’ve been able to work with my dad for 27 years,” said Servinski, who owns the nursery with his father, Leonard.

The nursery garden center has Laura Ashley garden accessories, Corinthian Bells and Music of the Spheres chimes, Sloggers garden sandals and boots, Hestra gloves, the largest selection of Melissa & Doug children’s activities north of Detroit and much more. The outdoor sculptures include a dog with angel wings and a fountain with a pink ribbon

of tribute. “The thing we hear most from people is it’s so nice to have such a variety of quality things to choose from,” Servinski said. “They know we’ll have the better quality things. That’s what we’re known for.” He recently retur ned from a garden décor show in Atlantic City, the fourth show each year he attends

to evaluate products for the nursery garden center. He and wife Michelle make all the selections and also go to a Christmas show in February, garden décor May and furniture in June. “We saw a lot of things, but if it doesn’t mix with what we’re doing it doesn’t m a k e s e n s e ,” h e s a i d . “Everything we take on we try to make sure ties into what we do.” Soon there will be more than 100 artificial Christmas trees in the space, from $99

to the “really high end” of $3,000. Following that will be a major expansion. “Next summer we’re going to double the size,” he said. “We’ll have pretty close to 10,000 square feet devoted to outdoor living.” One room will be devoted to fountains, grills and furniture. There will be about six times the current selection of pottery, which already is impressive, and about 30 patio sets on display. The nursery itself will see a boost

as well, with another 30 percent of plants and two more poly houses. In the store in front, the Melissa & Doug line will grow and there will be murals added to the walls. People don’t have to wait that long to see something n e w, t h o u g h . T h i s f a l l , Servinski will be adding Three Birds Casual teak furniture, to supplement the currently offered Alfresco Home, which is owned by a See “Nursery,” Page A21

couple of brothers. “They’re really picky about quality,” he said, noting the cushions are made from umbrella-grade material. “That’s the thing with this stuff, it lasts forever.” Originally the business was about 95 percent landscaping, 5 percent other aspects; now it’s more like 60-40. “About the last 15 years is where it’s been the big transformation,” he said. The change came about from “just the demand. Our customers wanted it.”

Outdoor cooking is another demand he feeds. The Weber display includes not just grills but accessories such as stainless steel fish turners, rib racks and pizza stones. Fervor grills will be added next year. Maple Hill also has Fornetto pizza ovens with price tags of $1,500 and $1,800. “We’re limited in what we can get; we can only get 16 a year,” Servinski said. “It’s for the person that’s the diehard outdoor cooking guy. Anything you can bake in an oven, you can do in it.”

Word of mouth travels far for two alteration shops Lisa satayut for the DaiLy News

Word-of-mouth, honesty and “pickiness” have the owners of two suc cessful alterations shops working night and day. While one is ready to expand, the other is looking to sell. Cheryl Lanphierd, the owner of Cheryl’s Altera-

chased the alterations shop from her mentor, Marilyn Butcher (not related), who taught her everything she knows about sewing and alterations. Some nights she is lucky if she gets to sleep for more than four hours before picking up the needle and thread again. Lanphierd, who works out of her home about five miles west of Midland off M-20, gets busier every year, and

her work space is getting cramped. “I’m looking to expand by adding on to our house,” she said. But, the extra work and expansion doesn’t mean she will hire help anytime soon. “I a m ve r y p i c k y a n d probably would not hire someone else if it has my name on it,” Lanphierd said. Lanphierd learned the art of sewing as a young child from her grandmother and mother. She opened her shop in 2005. While 90

percent of her business focuses on wedding gowns and bridal wear, she also provides steaming services, wedding dress cleaning and preservation and even transforms wedding gowns into christening gowns. As one size does not fit all. Butcher works her hardest to custom fit her customers—even if it means being completely honest. Aristocut leads in Best Beauty Salon category toNy LasCari tlascari@mdn.net

Aristocut Salon and Spa was named top Beauty Salon in the Midland Daily News Readers Choice contest. Debbie Ham, salon manager, said customer service and consistency set the salon apart from others in town. Located at 4811 Swede Ave., Aristocut has a full range of services, including haircuts, styling, color, highlights, perms, massage, facial, pedicure, manicure, waxing and more. Ham said the salon’s owners keep it updated. “It’s clean and friendly,” she said. “We’re friendly people. We do good work. There’s not one of us here that doesn’t. We’re familyfriendly.”

NICK KING | nking@mdn.net

Aristocut was awarded the Readers’ Choice award for best hair salon. Consistency is one benefit of the salon, which has a few stylists with more than 20 years experience at Aristocut, Ham said. Ham has worked there 26 years and has enjoyed forming friendships with her long-time clients. “We always have the regulars every week,” she said. “I know their families inside and out. There are people

I’ve done for 26 years, and their families are like my family.” Including both salon and spa services, Aristocut employs 20 people, and everyone gets along well, Ham said. “It makes coming in to work better,” she said. Ham thanked Aristocut’s customers for their Readers Choice votes. “It took us by surprise,” she said of the win. “Thank you so much for voting for us. We appreciate it and we are very grateful we have you for customers.” Aristocut always welcomes new customers to check out the salon, Ham said. “Stop in and take a look around,” she said. “Come meet us.”

Mattress selection an important part of your life Pati LaLoNDe for the Daily News

It’s a fact – people spend about a third of their lifetime sleeping – making the mattress one of the most important items in the house. Picking that mattress isn’t as easy as picking out a new sofa. There are questions to be answered and a test drive – so to speak.

“We ask them the way they sleep,” adds Kathy Kilbourn. “If they sleep on their side they need more padding to support the arch of the waist. We look at age (of the customer).”

With a combined 62 years in the business, Dan LeViere,

owner of Dan Dan the Mattress Man, and Kathy Kilbourn, who

    8

owns Tri-City Furniture with husband Lee, know the questions and the answers to a good night’s sleep. Bright-eyed and bushytailed from a good night’s sleep, readers of the Midland Daily News agree, offering both businesses the nod for best place to buy a mattress. There is no high pressure to buy at Dan Dan the Mattress Man, with locations at 802 Ashman, Midland, and 1322 E. Pickard Road, Mount Pleasant, and Tri-City Furniture, 135 W. Midland Road,

Auburn. It’s all about treating customers like family. “People know what they like,” said LeViere. “Our approach is to question you on your needs and what mattress will suit you best.” “We ask them the way they sleep,” adds Kathy Kilbourn. “If they sleep on their side they need more padding to support the arch of the waist. We look at age (of the customer). The older you are the more support you need, good support, in the

arch of the back.” Snoring is taken into consideration as well. Once those questions are answered, it’s off to give the mattress a try. “The mattresses are in the upper part of the business,” said Kilbourn. “We invite them to lay down and try them. We narrow it to what feels good.” That isn’t an easy task, since both offer full lines of mattresses that come in See “Mattress,” Page A27

varying firmness, memory foam, air beds, sided, unsided, padding on both sides, padding on one side, and commercial – all made in the USA, and many made in Michigan – delivered to the customer’s door. In the end, says LeViere, the best mattress is the one that makes you feel good when you wake up in the morning. Hopefully that will be for many years to come. “Typically mattresses have a 20-year warranty,” says Kilbourn, “But there are so many issues with health, allergies, dust mites, all different things getting into bed, they should be changed out every 10 to 12 years. Bodies needs are changing and needs different

things over time.” Loving what she does, Kilbourn says it’s the feedback she gets from customers that make her day. “I see people in stores and they tell me, ‘I was able to get a good night’s sleep,’” she laughs. “I’m shocked (about the award). It’s really cool.” LeViere agrees. “I think it’s great,” he said. “It shows our customer service is the best. We appreciate each and every customer.” Kilbourn also offers a tip on keeping that mattress in good working order – change it around four times a year. The first quarter, flip it, second quarter switch toe to head, repeat.

Alex’s Railside offers friendly atmosphere JohN keNNett jkennett@mdn.net

Providing superior customer service is the top priority for Bob and Cindy Long, owners of Alex’s Railside Restaurant. And that customer service has been recognized in the Daily News Readers Choice awards by readers as they voted the family-style eatery as the restaurant with the “The friendliest service.” “Our whole basis with the restaurant is customer service,” said Cindy. “Our philosophy is: ‘Any restaurant can put out good food, but if you don’t have the good customer base, you are not going to get those customers coming back.’ When we bought this, we decided that we were going to make it a business that people felt welcomed, friendly as if it was their own home.”

That customer service is not just a top priority for the Longs, but for the entire staff. “We’ve got excellent employees,” said Cindy. “We work as a team. Any employee that I hire I tell them that, ‘We’re only here because of the customer. If you put out bad service, that re f l e c t s o n y o u r w a g e s.’ We always like to hear back from customers, whether it is posit i v e o r n e g a t i v e. We c a n n o t change unless we know.” T h e c o m b i n a t i o n o f g re a t ser vice and homemade food has drawn customers from all around the state to the restaurant at 201 W. Saginaw Road in Sanford. “We have a very devoted clientele. Over the 10 years our business has expanded not only from Sanford and Midland, but from Bay City, Saginaw, Merrill, Houghton Lake and the Detroit area,” said Cindy. Bob agreed.

“Fifty to 60 percent of our customers come back 3 or 4 times per week,” he said. “We have a lot of vacationers coming north and they stop in. On a holiday weekend it is nothing to see six or eight campers or boats in the parking lot.” T h e re s t a u ra n t h a s g r ow n into a family atmosphere. “We make it a point to know customers by name. We know when they have lost family members or family members are ill. We love Sundays because we’ll seat people and then all of a sudden they are across the restaurant talking to another table. It’s like they saw people in church, but didn’t get a chance to talk to them. Sundays are our social hours here,” laughed Cindy. Being in a resort town and close to Sanford Lake, fish is the signature item on the menu. “We have perch, walleye and cod. We grill it. We tr y to get

more on the healthier aspects of it. We will sometimes serve salmon,” said Cindy. Expect to stand in line on the weekends as the restaurant is a ver y popular place. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, Alex’s offers a breakfast buffet. Saturdays, diners can take advantage of specials that offer an entree, drink and salad bar for $12. Sundays feature a family-style meals. “On Saturday we do about 200-230 people from noon until close on the special,” said Bob. “Sunday we’ll have a familystyle meal, something like turkey with dressing and we make all of our turkey here. It is not processed. Another week, we may have pot roast with carrots. Sunday morning we’ll do a r o u n d 4 0 0 p e o p l e. Su n d a y night we’ll do about 250.” But, its the fish that is the popular choice. “Last year we went through

over 600 cases of perch, 600 cases of walleye and close to 470 cases of cod,” stated Bob. “It is not over battered. It is lightly breaded, almost like it doesn’t have breading on it.” Bob and Cindy have been working together for 10 years now after purchasing the restaurant from Alex Martin. Cindy does the books and is responsible for the hiring of the front staff and scheduling. Bob, who had previously worked for t h e Te x a n re s t a u ra n t s a l o n g with being in the construction industry, oversees the kitchen staff. Hours for Alex’s are: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. To contact Alex’s call: (989) 687-2880. “We’re into our winter hours right now,” said Cindy. “In the s u m m e r, w e’re o p e n u n t i l 9 p. m . b e c a u s e w e’re a re s o r t town.”

DouMel offers more than just trees Beth BeLLor for the Daily News

Doug Cook knows there are lots of places people can buy Christmas trees. That’s why DouMel Tree Farm always has offered more. “Offer more than just a Christmas tree, offer an experience,” said Cook, who’s half the namesake of the farm along with his father, Melvin, who died in 2010 and loved the Christmas season. DouMel offered wagon rides from the very beginning, Cook said, setting themselves apart from parking lots and chain stores. “Just the last five years we’ve started to add these touches on the side,” such as trains, mountain scenes and a ski slope in the warming barn. Last year, murals were added to the walls. The farm will have its traditional opening the day after

“Offer more than just a Christmas tree, offer an experience,” said Cook, who’s half the namesake of the farm along with his father, Melvin, who died in 2010 and loved the Christmas season. Thanksgiving, offering Fraser fir, corkbark fir, Korean fir, concolor fir, blue spruce and white pine. “You know when you come out to our farm, our trees I think are very high quality,” Cook said. They are cut every three to four days for freshness. Some varieties, such as Korean fir, are brought in from land he has on the west side of the state and only available as precut, but others offer a “cut your own” option. The Korean fir’s needle is white on the underside, he said, and offers customers an unusual option. “Just trying to do something different than the next guy on the street.”

The corkbark is native to the West Coast and a cross between concolor and Fraser. “Their trunk, you push on their trunk, it’s almost like cork,” he said. “It’s a silver blue fir, kind of a medium needle.” He wasn’t able to offer corkbark last year because it suffered frostbite on Mother’s Day, but the crop is OK this year because of the warm spring. “We’ll have a great year, we’ve had a pretty damp summer,” Cook said, noting the tougher winter was hard on trees four years and younger. “This year’s larger tree crop looks pretty good.”

Bear is tops in disaster clean up keLLy DaMe kdame@mdn.net

Bear Water Restoration has been in the business since 1995, and has become established as the best of the local best by winning another in a long line of Readers’ Choice awards. The full-service restoration company has been winning top spots in the contest for the last decade, owner Walter Kienbaum said. This year’s recognition is for best disaster clean up. When asked how Bear began, Kienbaum explained his father was an insurance claims adjuster for 42 years. “My d a d w o u l d a l w a y s complain about other companies taking advantage of insurance companies,”

“I work with every spectrum of people you can imagine,” he said, calling that fact one of the most rewarding things about his job. “I’ve been very blessed. I’ve met thousands and thousands of people over the years.” Kienbaum said, adding he founded Bear on the basis of business ethics and morals. “For us, I love water restoration,” he said, adding the company does a lot of fire and smoke restoration work, which is mainly building. The water restoration work is a labor of love for which Kienbaum uses his biology and chemistry degrees, as well as trade

secrets. “We basically arrive at the scene and extract water out and apply scientific principles to dry out,” he said. He has designed his own machine for the job, and uses an antimicrobial that lasts for 10 years once it is applied. “I’m one of the few who are using the product,” he said. He explained the chemicals bond to the

molecular structure of the surface so it can’t be wiped off. “A lot of science goes behind what I do,” Kienbaum said. “It takes a lot of love.” His workers also have been around for years — some for 14 or 15. “I take very good care of my employees,” plus it doesn’t hurt that the job is fun and every day is

something new. Kienbaum said it is inevitable that when the company first reaches a job site, clients use the workers’ first names — a major feat since three guys are all named Dave. By the end of the job, a level of familiarity has been reached, including the use of nicknames; the three Daves are known as Ponytail, Super Dave and Speedy. Since the inception of Bear, Kienbaum has been in homes and businesses all over town, and in a pretty big territory spanning north to West Branch to south to Birch Run, and as far west as Blanchard and Mount Pleasant. He makes it a point to visit every site, and has worked with all kinds of people, from doctors and

lawyers to those with special needs. “I work with every spectrum of people you can imagine,” he said, calling that fact one of the most rewarding things about his job. “I’ve been very blessed. I’ve met thousands and thousands of people over the years.” Bear handles all aspects of disaster clean up, with Kienbaum also owning accompanying carpet cleaning and building businesses as well. “I do everything in house,” he said, pointing out no work is subcontracted out. “I go to every job and make sure they’re all going smoothly,” he said. Stacker’s Grill is the place to go for breakfast in Midland Matthew wooDs mwoods@mdn.net

Mi d l a n d h a s s p o k e n , and this year’s choice for the Best Breakfast Spot in town goes to Stacker’s G r i l l , 4 3 1 2 N . Sa g i n a w Road, a nice little eatery that serves up breakfast and lunch seven days a week. O w n e r Ti m Ho h w a r t said he is very pleased with the award, and the fact that his customers keep coming back for more. “We have great customers. We are really appreciative of the support we get,” he said.

Hohwart and his wife Wendy opened Stacker’s Grill in the spring of 2006, and the couple have continued to offer their homestyle, made to order and fresh ingredient fare to the Midland area for the better part of 10 years. Although cooking and the restaurant business runs in Hohwart’s blood, his path to the world of dining was not the career he originally sought. “I had a good job and l o s t i t 3 0 y e a r s a g o,” Hohwar t said. “I swore I would never work in a restaurant and five years later, I bought my first one.

I was 25 years old.” Hohwart also owns and operates Tim’s Tony’s on Center Road in Saginaw, famous for their rendition of an area favorite, the steak sandwich. “We actually have customers who will drive between the two restaurants,” Hohwart said. Stacker’s Grill recently celebrated its 8th anniversary in May, and Hohwart said the successful run of the business is due in large part to items made to order, along with a commitment to keeping his customers happy and well fed.

“We pretty much cook to order,” Hohwart said. “We don’t pre-make things, so everything is really fresh.” A s f o r w h a t St a c k e r’s G r i l l h a s t o o f f e r, t h a t depends on the mood of the customer. “We do serve breakfast and lunch no matter what the time of day,” Hohwart said. When asked what customer ask for the most from the breakfast menu, Hohwar t said the clear choice is the Original Stacker’s Super Scramble. “Scrambled eggs, chopped ham, bacon, o n i o n s , g re e n p e p p e r s

Pinecrest Farms

and topped with shredded, blended cheese,” he said. “It is very popular.” And of course, Stacker’s Grill offers a full lunch menu. “I think two of the favorites we have for lunch are our giant steak sandwich and or half pound made to order burgers,” Hohwart said. The owner said a few changes are in store for the eatery later this year. Hohwart said the staff is working on a new menu that will keep favorites w h i l e i n t ro d u c i n g n e w dishes. He said a remodeling operation in on the

horizon this year as well. If there is one suggestion Hohwart and crew hear on a regular basis at the restaurant, it isn’t about the food, or the service. “People keep asking us to stay open later,” he said, laughing. Currently, the restaurant is open 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Hohwart said he looks f o r w a rd t o m a n y m o re years of serving the community. “Midland has been very good to us,” he said. “There are a lot of nice people here.”

W h i c h Cra f t Ta p ro o m has just celebrated its one year anniversary a week ago. Now, the pub that sells craft brewed beers from the state of Michigan has been named Best Brew Pub by Daily News readers Choice awards. Amazing Deli’s menu promises ‘the best sandwich you’ll ever eat’ steVe GriffiN for the Daily News

That’s what Jeff DeVaney set out to create 16 years ago when the Davison resident and restaurant veteran decided to open a deli in Midland. Daily News readers must find the claim solid: they voted Amazing Deli ‘Best Deli’ in the Readers’ Choice poll. DeVaney, settling into a chair after a recent noon lunch rush, said he opened Amazing Deli in 1997 on Eastman Road, near the Midland Mall. He moved downtown, to 134 East Main Street, about five years ago, remodeling a space that had housed the LaSalle Café and other businesses. “I like the downtown area,” he said of the revitalized neigh-

borhood. “It’s been good for us.” ‘Us’ is a staff of six or seven, a team with a family feel, DeVaney said. Manager Kevin Haggart and assistant manager Cheryl Wood have each been with him six to eight years. Over time DeVaney gently sculpted the business, trimming what had been a list of 35 sandwiches and 15 subs. He dropped subs; “so many places have them,” he said, and focused on sandwiches, plus soups, four kinds of salads, and specialty hot dogs built on high-quality Koegel franks, he said. DeVaney calls the keys to deli success “good product, and good customer service.” There are several ways to enjoy your sandwich: carryout, delivered (“I think we’re about the last ones in town

with free delivery,” Haggart said), or you can settle in among the sports jerseys and other décor, in one of about 40 seats, for a downtown dine-in experience. One more option? Catering. DeVaney said customers can order standard trays, or his staff will assemble one to order – sandwiches, large salads, combinations, plus chips and cookies, for parties, tailgate events and other gatherings. Soups are a mainstay, especially as the weather cools. “We sold out today,” said Haggart, “and it was a double batch” of white chicken and chili soup. As fall settles in, there’ll be two soup choices daily, one of them vegetarian. Customers seeking gluten-free options can choose

between regular gluten-free wraps and spinach wraps. A sandwich wrapped in lettuce is another option, for those avoiding breads. Pretzel buns were recently added, available with any sandwich. And the name? As he was putting together plans for his deli, DeVaney said he “just thought it was amazing food, so I went with ‘Amazing Deli.’” Daily News readers find it an apt name. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Contact Amazing Deli by phone at 989-8377278, by fax to 989-837-7280, on Facebook at facebook. com/amazing deli, or at their web site at www.amazingdeli.net.

At times we have discovered a significant (and potentially dangerous) general health problem, detected during an eye exam, that otherwise was not detected. Patients in our office will not receive a 10-minute eye exam. Our examinations are scheduled for at least 30 minutes, which allows our patients time to have their questions answered and their concerns addressed. . . when a patient arrives at the office they are greeted by a friendly, familiar face,” Buckingham said. The cases in Southworth Jewelry are a mix of the very latest and the very old, and Dave Southworth likes it that way. He h a s t h e n a m e s p e o p l e expect to see, such as Seiko and Add-A-Pearl. But he has others that are harder to come by: Barnett Davis, Rego, AllisonKaufman out of Los Angeles. He likes the colored stones, lifting out a smoky quartz pendant surrounded by small orange sapphires and diamonds. Nearby is a fat light blue teardrop topaz, carefully set so as not to hide the stone. Jewelry trends are impossible to pin down, Southworth said. “They come and go so fast.” They don’t matter to customers, either, he noted. “ When they come in, they know what they’re looking for.” He doesn’t offer credit and he

Mom, in the dining room: “Did you take out the trash?” Dad, in the living room: “I have plenty of cash. What do you need money for?” What? I don’t want any money.” “Why did you ask for it?” “What did you say? You’re mumbling again.”
