The Saginaw Civic Center, today known as The Dow Event Center, was built in 1972 by the City of Saginaw. The Civic Center was composed of three main parts: Wendler Arena, Heritage Theater and Unity Hall. The center offers area residents hundreds of entertainment, sports, cultural and educational opportunities annually. Acts who have performed at the center in the past include Elvis Presley, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Reba McEntire, Smashing Pumpkins, Kid Rock, Diana Ross, Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Les Miserables, The Nutcracker Ballet, Rent and Riverdance. The Garber Management Group purchased an Ontario Hockey League team in early 2002. The team was named the Saginaw Spirit and Wendler Arena became its new home. More than 30 home games are played by the Saginaw Spirit in Wendler Arena every year, adding another dimension to the event center. The Dow Chemical Co. of Midland was awarded naming rights to the facility in September 2004. The agreement was mutually beneficial — Dow was able to support a worthy community endeavor and the event center was given an internationally recognized name to help draw performers and shows. Attractions: West Midland Family Center Family is at the heart of the West Midland Family Center. WMFC is located 14 miles west of Midland on M-20. The public is invited to come for a visit, tour the facility and learn firsthand about WMFC. Visitors will come to understand the needs of this rural region of Midland County and how those needs are addressed daily by the family center’s staff with the help of the many community donors. WMFC is a human services and recreational facility dedicated to the enhancement of family and individual strengths. It regularly serves individuals from 10 of Midland County’s 16 townships. Individuals and family members can access a multitude of human services including: individual and family counseling, parent education, emergency assistance for clothing or food, childcare, afterschool and summer programs, preschool programs and family support services. The family center’s programs are facilitated by professional staff members and are educationally-based and socially appealing. WMFC provides services to help eliminate family stress including many programs to assist parents with the challenges of raising a family. WMFC also offers summer programs for youth and teens. Program registration takes place in the spring, and at this time the summer program is closed for enrollment. Our “Sunsational” Summer Program runs for seven weeks every summer with youth and teens grouped according to age. Through the generosity of our partner, Bullock Creek Schools, younger children (those entering kindergarten through those entering second grade) meet at Floyd Elementary. All the older children meet at WMFC. Children have a wide range of adventure, fun and educationally-based, hands-on learning activities from which to choose. At the WMFC site, swimming in the outdoor pool is a favorite choice. For an additional fee, children may participate in the Sunrise program in the early morning before summer program activities get underway or stay for the Sunset program after summer program activities conclude. The WMFC provides teen leadership skills development opportunities through The Dow College Opportunity Program. This program was founded in 1989 to help break the cycle of poverty and lack of higher education in the outskirts of Midland County.
