Dahlia Hill is located at the corner of Main Street and Orchard Road in Midland. It was created in 1992 by Charles Breed and Bill Fisher with Breed providing 1,700 dahlias and Fisher contributing 200 yards of topsoil. Today more than 3,000 dahlias are planted with over 200 different varieties labeled and arranged along the pathways. The Hill is maintained by The Dahlia Hill Society of Midland, a nonproﬁt organization created in 1998 to preserve and maintain the garden. At the top of Dahlia Hill is an art gallery featuring original designs in cast paper and bronze. All revenue from sales is used to support the maintenance and operating cost of the garden. An annual tuber sale, open to the public, takes place the last two Saturdays in May from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hill. Flowers begin appearing in July and continue until the ﬁrst frost. The museum includes rotating exhibition galleries and a permanent hands-on science exhibition, The Hall of Ideas, combining elements of science, technology, history and art. Visitors are directed through a geological history and formation of Michigan’s natural resources on Level One; an examination of people’s use of natural resources on Level Two; and a consideration of the relationship between art and science as well as a challenge for the future on Level Three. a combination of archival and multi-purpose facilities in a campus setting close to downtown Midland and the Pere Marquette Rail Trail. The Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center houses the Dorothy Dow Arbury Midland County History Gallery, offering hands-on interactive exhibits where you can “talk” to Midland’s founders, visit Main Street of a century ago and see vignettes of its history. The building also has a research library and an archival collection of Midland County artifacts from its early days to contemporary times. The Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum uses multi-media exhibits and audio and video to provide a look at the birth of The Dow Chemical Co. and the evolution of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The 1874 Bradley Home is a historic house museum offering a glimpse of the everyday life of an early Midland family.

MATRIX:MIDLAND MATRIX:MIDLAND brings world-renowned guest artists, concerts and professional entertainment throughout the year to the Midland Center for the Arts. The MATRIX:MIDLAND Festival is an annual event in early summer celebrating the arts, sciences and humanities. Attractions: Midland Community Center The Midland Community Center is an operating unit of the Greater Midland Community Centers, Inc. The MCC is located at 2205 Jefferson Ave. The Midland Community Center provides recreational, social and personal development opportunities for individuals and families. Activities include: Aquatics The MCC has the Oasis featuring Spraytopia, which includes a recreational pool with water slide, preschool water table, heated whirlpool and an outdoor state-of-the-art spray park. Aquatic program offerings include swimming lessons; lifeguard classes; competitive Dolphins swim team for youths ages 6-18, a range of aquatic ﬁtness classes including Aqua Zumba and those designed for seniors and Aqua Therapy. The MCC also offers a variety of summer camps where kids can learn how to do synchronized swimming, be introduced to competitive swimming or just have fun at the wacky water camps. Athletics The MCC has three full-sized gymnasiums, two squash courts, 13 racquetball/paddleball courts,

Program offerings include court sports and tournaments; adult basketball leagues and drop-ins, youth basketball leagues, clinics and camps; volleyball — youth and adult classes; gymnastics — beginning through advanced for all ages and special classes for preschoolers; table tennis; badminton and pickleball. The MCC has a 23-foot-high climbing wall that is customized to include 15 sections with two to three different climbing routes on each section. Programs are offered from novice to expert. The athletics department also offers a variety of summer camps for preschoolers to teenagers. Camps are offered throughout the summer in full day and half day programs. Curling A new Curling Center opened in the fall of 2008 on the Midland

Community Center campus. The Curling Center offers curling league play for adults and youth, classes and rink rentals from November through March. This facility also is available for rentals. Dance The center has two mirrored dance studios. Programs include a variety of styles from beginning to advanced are available for students ages 18 months through adult. Dance classes include: tap, hip hop, ballet, ballroom and belly dancing. Dance and music productions take place annually before live audiences. All studios are available for rental. The West Midland Family Center is located 14 miles west of Midland on M-20. The public is invited to come for a visit, tour the facility and learn ﬁrsthand about WMFC. WMFC is a human services and recreational facility dedicated to the enhancement of family and individual strengths. It serves 10 of Midland County’s 16 townships, providing individual and family counseling, parent education, emergency assistance for clothing or food, childcare, afterschool and summer programs, preschool programs and family support services. WMFC is host site for Kinder Kare, a state certiﬁed childcare center available to all children up to the age of 12 years old. It provides two fullday Great Start Readiness Preschool (GSRP) classes for 4-year-olds. Additionally, it partners with North Midland Family Center to provide one full-day class at the North Midland site; with the Chippewa Nature Center to provide a Great Start Readiness component within the CNC’s Nature Preschool and with the Bullock Creek schools and the Midland County Educational Services Agency in the implementation of Great Start Readiness Preschool programs at Bullock Creek Elementary. Additionally, WMFC in collaboration with the Midland County ESA and local funders provides a traditional half-day preschool class for 3-yearolds. WMFC provides after-school opportunities for students in grades K-8 and their parents. These programs provide fun activities, interest development, parental education and focus on strengthening the parent/child bond. WMFC has a summer program for youth and teens. Registration takes place in the spring, and at this time the program is closed for enrollment. Children have a wide range of adventure,

The North Midland Family Center provides programs and services for individuals in the north Midland area that promote social, emotional, intellectual and physical well being. The center, an operating unit of the Greater Midland Community Centers, Inc., is located adjacent to the Mills Township Park complex at 2601 E. Shearer Road, just east of Sturgeon Road. The NMFC offers a variety of programs and services, including: • State licensed childcare for children 6 weeks to 12 years of age.

The Freeland SportsZone is a 100,000-square-foot facility providing opportunities for athletic recreation, community wellness and a center for community gatherings. The gymnasium can accommodate six basketball courts and four volleyball courts and has an indoor track circling it upstairs. A fitness room overlooks the gymnasium and gymnastics facility. Some stations offer built-in individual televisions and iPod adapters for entertainment. Two aerobics rooms, with bamboo flooring, and a specialty training room, are upstairs to accommodate activities such as hockey, football training on artificial turf, general aerobics, spinning classes and other activities. A community room seats about 300 people, has a kitchen and can be used for gatherings, dinners and banquets, as well as informational seminars by MidMichigan Health. The two main locker rooms and eight individual bathrooms have showers. The entrance lobby has a big screen TV and Wi-Fi connection, plus tables and chairs. The Midland area grief and loss support groups are free services provided by the Midland Catholic parishes, Memorial Presbyterian Church, MidMichigan Hospice, Angel Blessings and Heartland Hospice Services. The three Catholic parishes host an adult group recovery process that is Christian in focus and open to all. Meetings take place throughout the year at one of the parishes. Blessed Sacrament Parish also offers an eight-week group recovery process for adults of any faith in the process of divorce. It takes place annually from September to November. The sanctuary of the Bertha E. R. Strosacker Memorial Presbyterian Church took on the look of a warehouse in mid-March. Colorful blankets brought in by parishioners covered the pews to protect them. Hundreds of boxes and wooden boards of all shapes and lengths lined the center and side aisles and piled up in the chancel. But the mood was festive as about 30 volunteers showed up to help unload two separate semi truckloads of organ components for the church’s new $1.3 million pipe organ.
