submitted by Cynthia Sturtevant After the winter we have experienced, it will feel good to get outside and give the house and grounds a good sprucing up. Below you find a handy checklist. To help you with your list, check out Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce’s member list at www.midmainechamber.com to find the business that can help you. Exterior Winter can be tough on roofs, chimneys, windows, foundations, gutters, and decks, to name a few. Binoculars will work great to inspect your roof and chimney for damage or vegetation.  Roof  Chimney  Exterior Walls Interior We have all heard and even done our share of Spring Cleaning. Throw open the windows and give the house a cleaning and airing out. Don’t forget to check your air conditioning units for good working order. The filters should be changed and the hose connections checked for leaks.  General Cleaning  Air Conditioning  Attics (any critters?)  Basements (cracks?) Outdoors The temps are up (finally!) and the sun is out. Roll up your shirt sleeves and get busy!  Lawns  Decks & Patios  Outdoor Furniture  Grills Home Improvements After completing your spring chores, it is now time to think about home improvements. Maybe this will be the year you add that fire pit, pool, or beautiful new garden. Perhaps you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen or bathroom. Don’t dismay! We have people that can help with that, too!  Landscaping  Renovating/Remodeling a Room  Painting  Energy Efficient Windows Enjoy!

Small Business Week honors local business Submitted by Jennifer Olsen, Waterville Main Street Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, Waterville Public Library Business & Career Center, Waterville Main Street, KVCOG and TOCmedia invite you to join Small Business Waterville to celebrate National Small Business Week. In addition to weeklong local events, US SBA is honoring one of Waterville’s own. Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced this year's Small Business Person of the Year winners from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A panel is currently reviewing all the packages and a national winner and two runners-up will be selected and announced at a future date. The national winner will be recognized as the 2015 National Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration this year in Washington, D.C., May 8. "It is my pleasure and honor to announce the 54 winners. Competition was extremely keen across the nation for these prestigious awards. I couldn't be any prouder than recognizing these outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners, they represent the backbone of our economy. Small businesses created nearly 2 million of the roughly 3 million private-sector jobs generated in 2014. More than 7 million of the 11 million jobs created during our recovery have been generated by startups and small enterprises," said Contreras-Sweet. Our contender from MAINE: Loyal Biscuit Co.! Since 1963, National Small Business Week recognizes the critical contributions of America's entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. Continued on page 6

Literally, there is about a two hour window when the bulk of the attendees arrive. Parking, security, bathrooms, routes/pathways, etc. all must be considered. I know what we experience with the Taste of Waterville; I can’t imagine it on that scale. Much of it is staffed by club members and other volunteers who are extensively trained, which brings me to my next point – customer service. I’ve never experienced anything like it in my life. Diane’s Travel Agency is a well-established professional agency that has provided travel arrangements for the discriminating traveler for 40 years. Diane Roderigue opened at her new location at 197 Main Street Waterville in September 2013, and is a lifelong resident of Waterville where she has had the privilege to raise her three daughters. Her career in the industry began in 1975 before travel agents had access to the Internet. Reservations were made over the phone, tickets were handwritten, and airline prices were found in tariffs. Keeping up with industry changes has been exciting. She considers the Internet a great resource, but it can’t be compared to the personal service she can provide. The tour operators that she deals with will price match any package found on the Internet. With 40 years of knowledge, she understands the intricacies of the system, and can help you take full advantage of them. She will get you the best price on airfare, car rental and hotels. She’s the expert in making sure you get there! The most rewarding aspect of her job is keeping clients happy by “paying attention to detail and providing the best service possible.”

She also loves being part of a community where she can connect with friends, clients and other businesses. Part of having a successful business is having a close working relationship with reputable tour operators and consolidators. She has completed the educational programs and successfully passed online exams for the following companies: Un-Cruise Adventures, UniWorld River Cruises, Hotel Excellence by Marriott, Sandals and Trafalgar. The past few months have already taken her to St. Moritz Switzerland, a UniWorld River cruise to Venice & the Gems of Northern Italy, and most importantly, Framingham to visit her new granddaughter, Adelynn. Next on her bucket list is a South African safari, and a Viking River cruise on the Danube with a Prague extension. The travel business is all about relationships….it’s not what you know, but who you know that counts. Diane’s Travel is a one-stop shop for today’s traveler. Call or stop by to book the vacation you’ve been dreaming about. Take a river cruise on the beautiful Danube River and travel throughout the fascinating history of Eastern Europe. In every port, join complimentary shore excursions and immerse yourself in the culture, lifestyle and distinct beauty of the city. Every tour is led by a knowledgeable English-speaking guide.
