LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

W

elcome to the first issue of MidPointe’s system-wide quarterly programming guide. This publication is designed to provide a single source for all the exciting events happening at your MidPointe Library System. We hope you will find many opportunities to enjoy the diverse array of programming available at all of our locations! On page 12, you can find information about Innovation Pointe, MidPointe’s new makerspace. Located in MidPointe Library West Chester, this space and all the equipment located within, along with its highly trained staff, are devoted to giving everyone in the region a place to create, make and innovate! We can’t wait to see what our patrons design and craft with the tools now at their fingertips. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This publication is designed to provide a single source for all the exciting events happening at your MidPointe Library System. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As we enter into 2020, we can’t help but reflect on the last decade of milestones for MidPointe Library System. From introducing lendable eBooks, to opening new locations in Monroe and Liberty Township, the progress of the last 10 years has made Library materials and services more accessible to everyone in our service area. This needed growth and ability to adapt to changing technology has been a direct result of voter approval of a .75 mill property tax levy in 2010, and its renewal in 2015. On March 17, MidPointe will return to the ballot with a potential renewal of this levy. This is not a new

tax, yet does provide the funding necessary to keep your Library fiscally stable and able to provide the materials, programs and services that have become essential to our patrons. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It is our pleasure to serve the residents of MidPointe Library System and we want you to be delighted with the services, resources and events we provide to the community. We hope to see you attending frequent events, borrowing many print or digital items available for checkout and using the numerous services (passport processing, test proctoring and free meeting rooms to name a few) available to our patrons. Sincerely,

Travis Bautz Executive Director MidPointe Library System

RENEWAL LEVY INFO O

n March 17, 2020 a renewal levy for the MidPointe Library System will be on the ballot. Making up nearly 40% of the Library budget, levy funding is used to maintain services, hours and materials, continue to provide up-to-date technological and digital resources, and sustain programming like the many events featured in this guide. With current funding levels, the MidPointe Library System is able to provide over 197,000 cardholders with a myriad of resources, materials, services, and programming, including: An Available Collection: MidPointe offers a collection of over a half million items, and partnership in the SearchOhio lending consortium gives patrons access to over 16 million items from across the state. In 2018 over 2.2 million items were checked out. The average cost to the owner of a $100,000 home is $23.85 a year (less than the cost of one hardback book).

Diverse Programming: In 2018, MidPointe offered over 5700 programs – you can find a sampling here in this program guide! These are as varied as yoga class and technology instruction for adults, to storytimes (page 2) and early literacy book clubs for children. The Library’s Summer Reading Program, which promotes literacy for all ages, celebrates year-round learning with 12,000 participants annually. Library Access To All: MidPointe’s influence expands well beyond the buildings. Librarians visit childcare facilities and community centers to engage young people in the joy of reading. The Bookmobile makes stops at over 20 different local schools a

month (page 13). Educators are able to stock their classrooms with books as a result of MidPointe’s “Teacher Collections.” The MidPointe Outreach Services Department delivers materials to over 200 patrons who are unable to physically visit the Library due to advanced age or disability.

LEVY FUNDS WILL: Maintain services, hours and materials at all MidPointe locations. Continue to provide up-to-date digital resources to the public. Sustain Library programming for kids, teens and adults.

Sensible Growth: Additionally, levy funding has allowed for needed expansion of services throughout the MidPointe service area. These include: opening new libraries in Monroe and Liberty Township to close two geographical service gaps, renovating an empty building to right-size the MidPointe Library in the City of Trenton, re-introducing Bookmobile service to provide both school and community stops, and launching a makerspace within the footprint of MidPointe Library West Chester to serve as a creative S.T.E.A.M. space for children and a business incubator for adults (page 12). Renewed community support would be carefully used to continue serving the public and maintain MidPointe’s current level of service. Additional information regarding the renewal levy can be found at www.MidPointeLibrary.org.

nnovation Pointe, the new makerspace within MidPointe Library West Chester, is now open as a hub of creativity in eastern Butler County. Serving as a S.T.E.A.M. space for young people, and a small business incubator for adults, Innovation Pointe is the first public makerspace in Butler County. A S.T.E.A.M. space for young people and a small business incubator for adults. __________________________________________________________________________________

The equipment is ready for use and staff are on hand to assist with training (see more info below). Badging classes and programming will launch soon. We can’t wait to see what you create, make and innovate! Innovation Pointe is a “Do-it-Yourself” learning center where patrons of any experience level gain practical skills through hands-on learning. WHAT IS BADGING? Badging is a training process that certifies a patron to use equipment. Think of it like earning a merit badge—you learn a skill and then demonstrate your learning to earn your badge. HOW DO I EARN A BADGE? This depends on the type of equipment. Some equipment (button maker, digital conversion equipment, laminator, large flat heat press, sewing machine and soldering iron) requires less training. For these pieces of equipment, you must complete

“Competency Badging” which includes watching or reading provided material and demonstrating basic skills. To utilize equipment that is more intensive or complex (3-D printer and scanner, laser engraver and cutter, sublimation machines, vinyl printer, Cricut and embroidery machine), you must complete “Beginner Badging”. This entails attending a staff-led training and then demonstrating use and safety procedures. See an Innovation Pointe staff member to sign up for badging.

LIBRARY ON WHEELS

A

fter a thirty-year hiatus, MidPointe brought back an old friend, the Bookmobile, in 2018. This 30-foot bus, stocked with library materials, now visits over 20 local schools a month, as well as making appearances at community stops and special events. The Bookmobile is just part of the Library on Wheels department that oversees much of MidPointe’s outreach to the community. The Library on Wheels team also manages MidPointe’s home delivery service which provides Library materials to those who cannot physically visit the Library due to advanced age or disability. This department also provides Library programming for 15 retirement communities throughout the service area, with over 300 participants a month!

Fearn is a Library on Wheels patron and this past November, we delivered a cake and flowers (as well as her usual books), to celebrate her 107th birthday! She was kind enough to share her early memories of the bookmobile and what the library has meant to her through the years. Fun fact – Fearn is 3 months older than the MidPointe Library System!
