It’s time. You’ve been doing the same old thing for too long. Seriously, why do the kids get to have all the fun? This year, recapture what you used to love or take up something completely new. YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO BE IN A ROCK BAND – REALLY When John Kozicki was a kid, he used to have to take piano lessons like every other kid he knew. He hated it. But those lessons would be fuel for a future business, Music & Rock School in Apex. “With piano lessons I was essentially learning how to play a typewriter; when you see this note written on the staff, you press this key on the piano,” says Kozicki, owner of the school and also one of its instructors. “There was never any explanation as to why or how to apply what I was learning.” A few years later, as a teen, he picked up the guitar and loved his lessons, returning each week with a hunger to learn more. “I think the biggest differences were in the application,” Kozicki says. “My teacher asked me about the music I liked; he encouraged me to start a band with my friends, which I did immediately. Being in a band taught me how to apply everything I was learning in my lessons, and it was fun.” “I studied business in college and even after graduation I continued to live a double life,” continues Kozicki. “By day, I worked office jobs; at night I was playing shows and still touring on the weekends. Playing and performing music live, in a band setting, was simply the most fun I had ever had.” That experience led him to open Music & Rock School in 2009, which offers lessons but also opportunities to perform so
that students of all ages can apply what they learn. “Since opening, I’ve compared music to sports – lessons are like practice, performances are like games,” says Kozicki. “You wouldn’t join a team and go to practice every week, but never play in a game. Music shouldn’t be any different. But the majority of studios only offer weekly lessons, with no additional programs and very few Karen Campbell performance opportunities.” Apex mom Karen Campbell had one of her three sons enrolled in guitar at Music & Rock School when she had a realization. “One day it sort of dawned on me; I wish I could go and do half the cool things that they get to do. And that’s when I got up the nerve to approach John about learning a song of my own.” Campbell, who gives art lessons to kids who are tracked out, felt a little guilty at first. But she thought about all her kids got to do. “Suddenly, I didn’t feel guilty anymore, just a sense of
