a look at MORRISVILLE

TheWelcomeMat RDU International Capping 15 years of Growth

There is a universal response from passengers who approach RaleighDurham International Airport for the first time. “I’m from Southern California and the beach, so when we flew in we had never seen so much greenery,” said Mindy Hamlin, the spokeswoman for the Morrisville-based airport. “It is a calming experience. We hear that from so many people, that it is so beautiful.” That’s the view from 5,000 feet. On the ground, the airport will cap 15 years of construction in early March with the opening of Terminal 1, which has often been referred to as the Big Blue Box.

The hammering will stop this spring, creating an opportunity for those involved in the planning to sit back for the first time in more than a decade and admire what has been a virtual whirlwind of upgrades to an airport community filled with anxiety and trepidation when American Airlines moved its Southeast hub out of the area in 1994. “Our former airport director (John Brantley) says the AA hub was one of the best things that happened to us and is often perceived as one of the worst things to happen to us,” Hamlin said. “But it actually turned out to be a good thing. They put us on the map … but it also coincided with tremendous growth in the region. So when American de-hubbed it became very clear that the demand for air service was still here.” At the time, the Air Service Development Team embarked on a sales pitch for the airport and the area, convincing airlines that demand remained strong in one of the nation’s most desirable places to live, and where Morrisville and its surrounding business community was thriving.

“So we saw tremendous growth,” Hamlin said. “And in 1999 when Southwest Airlines came on board it changed the playing field even more, giving us even more competition with a low-fare carrier. It allowed us to emerge from being a hub to having nine airlines that offer service with very competitive prices.” Airport traffic peaked in 2007 at just more than 10 million passengers, then the economic downturn hit. Still, RDU International has hovered around 9 milllion-9.2 million passengers per year. “This is not unique to RDU,” Hamlin said. “Travel is down, airlines are merging and they want to be profitable, so they are cutting seat capacity.” However, in 2012 United Airlines added non-stop service to San Francisco and Delta Airlines increased its service to LAX. “We’re seeing some much-needed additions,” Hamlin said. And renovations. For the old timers, there are no longer Terminals A, B and C, but Terminal 1, which is nearing the end of a $68 million facelift, and Terminal 2, which was completed caryliving.com | 19

On the same day, In all the States By Kate Turgeon

Sarah Hale and Thanksgiving Did you ever unwittingly name your child after a great American whose name you had never even heard? Yeah, me neither. Okay, maybe I did. When our daughter was born my husband and I decided on the name Sara-Hale, Sara for his grandmother and Hale for my grandparents. It’s one of those double names that Southerners and people who want to really pack a punch into a first name are fond of. When our Sara-Hale was about five years old a friend gave us a children’s book titled “Thank you, Sarah.” The friend, who stumbled onto the book in a store, mentioned how neat it was that we named our daughter after the woman who, get this, saved Thanksgiving. Until then I thought pilgrims, Native Americans and large boats were responsible. After all,

Thanksgiving had been a holiday since that famous harvest feast in 1621, right? Wrong. We read the book and discovered that Sarah Hale (first name Sarah, last name Hale) was responsible for lobbying to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. The daughter of a disabled Revolutionary War veteran, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale was a mother of five, a widow and a writer, too. She began her professional career as editor of Ladies Magazine, a journal published in Boston by the Rev. John Blake and later published by Louis Antoine Godey under the name Lady’s Book. As history tells it, she was the first female magazine editor. And she made her mark on American history by writing. caryliving.com | 37

3rd Annual APEX JAZZ FESTIVAL

WAVERLY ARTISTS GROUP OPEN HOUSE

3rd annual DOWNTOWN BOUNTY

Dog Day in the Park is an annual event hosted by Doggie Village and the Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department. On September 21st, this year’s dogs and their people had fun at the newly opened Suggs Farm Park, a sprawling farm located behind Womble Park. More than 20 vendors participated.

On September 27th the Waverly Artists Group held its monthly open house. The open house featured many new pieces of work and a “world” selection of hors d’oeuvre and great music. Waverly Artists Group Studio & Gallery is located at 302 Colonades Way, Suite 209 in Cary.

Live music fans in the Triangle enjoyed the 3rd Annual Apex Jazz Festival on September 21st in Downtown Apex. Some of the area’s top jazz and blues acts performed on 11 stages. This pub-crawl event has become a favorite for area jazz, blues, and live music fans.

On September 14th the 3rd Annual “Downtown Bounty” got underway in Fuquay-Varina downtown. Local farmers, restaurants, civic groups, churches and downtown merchants came together to celebrate a day of Downtown Bounty in the historic Varina shopping district. Four Oaks Bank received Best Presentation for Brunswick Stew Cook-off during the event.
