My Gut’s in
JEOPARDY!
o FLY L
ast November, I took my ten-year-old to Atlanta overnight to audition for Kids’ Jeopardy!, but the only thing that wound up in true jeopardy was my stomach. I’ve blogged about that problem already, so I won’t go into great detail here; suffice it to say that it started with about three too many donuts that Friday morning, but was made worse by turbulence, airport food and a tight schedule – three things
I’ve never been able to handle. The Jeopardy! aspect started the previous month, when Christopher took the online test – a series of 30 written questions, with 20 seconds to type in each answer. Several days later, they invited him to the next round of auditions. Kim and Matthew had plans that Saturday, so it was just us two. This made for good bonding time, but Christopher and I are the wrong members of the family to
send anywhere with deadlines – we tend to get distracted by shiny things and interesting food. That’s why we ate dinner at the Carvel counter before we even left RDU. We also thought it was pretty cool that Hartsfield had a Moe’s, so we grabbed a second dinner before setting foot outside that airport. The lesson I learned was that a Carvelanche with M&Ms plus lots of turbulence plus a greasy quesadilla equals an uncomfortable ride in the hotel shuttle. But I put on a brave face while I pointed out the Atlanta skyline to Christopher, who regaled me with his knowledge of it. We’d booked a room at the Peachtree Plaza Westin, which he informed me is the tallest hotel in the western hemisphere. I was surprised to hear that Atlanta holds that honor rather than a larger city, but I learned years ago not to question my son’s knowledge of trivia. Plus, he reminded me that the word “hotel” is an important qualifier – other cities have taller buildings, but no hotels that tall. (I would later find out why this is a good idea – it’s too hard to sleep that far up.) He also told me that Atlanta’s entry is dwarfed by the record-holder across both hemispheres – a building in the United Arab Emirates. He thought it’s in Abu Dhabi, but admitted it could be Dubai. After I lifted my jaw from my chest, I pointed out an imposing building topped with a columned structure that looked vaguely Greek. He told me yes, it reminded him of the Parthenon. Once we checked in, we took the express elevator to our room on the 65th floor, my ears popping the whole time. But at least it didn’t make my stomach hurt more – that didn’t happen until we walked into our room, where one wall was a floor-to-ceiling window. A 64-story view is not the best thing for an acrophobic (Christopher taught me that word) with an upset stomach, so I stayed back while he ran up and leaned into the glass to look straight down. Not trusting a curved pane of ¼-inch-thick glass, I heroically made my way close enough to grasp the back of his shirt while he stared at the street below (and I stared at the floor). Once he looked up long enough to check out the room, Christopher asked for the bed closest to the window; I told him I’d consider it if we could just return to the lobby for a bit. This was another mistake, as the first thing we found there was a display on the hotel’s window replacement project. I’d forgotten about the tornado that swept through Atlanta in 2008, causing structural damage to buildings like the one where I was expected to sleep that night. It had swayed no more than two feet, they assured me, but many windows were broken – and they wound up replacing all 6,350 of them. I wondered how dry the glue was on the one in our room, and told Christopher he wasn’t allowed to sleep in the bed closest to it, after all. But we managed to live through the night, celebrating with a breakfast buffet before the audition. We walked into a ballroom full of proud parents and Poindexters, each of us sizing up
