Welcome to Corvallis!

By Mary Pat Parker Located in the Heart of the Willamette Valley, Corvallis, Oregon offers year round culinary, cultural and outdoor adventures, making it the perfect place for your next getaway. Surrounded by fertile countryside with locally owned, nationally known wineries and plenty of biking trails in and around town, we are home to creative chefs with a decidedly local bent and amazing brew masters all right here for your enjoyment, we invite you to visit Corvallis. In addition to the wonderful foodie, craft beer and wine scene, Corvallis has a thriving arts & culture community. We have great artists, photographers, musicians and performing artists all here for taking in. Home to Oregon State University primarily known for its’ research, the 400 acre main campus in Corvallis includes an Historic District and is among 41 Best School Buys in the 2013 edition of “The Fiske Guide to Colleges.” We know the presence of the University contributes to the City’s happening vibe- a place fueled by curiosity and innovation. With a vibrant downtown and a beautiful waterfront, we invite to come for a visit and stay for a while!

From the Mayor On behalf of Corvallis’ nearly 60,000 residents, we are so pleased that you have chosen to visit our community, whether for business, pleasure, or both. Although Corvallis has earned national recognition for a number of its attributes, we are particularly proud of its recent recognition as the top city in the country in innovation. Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, writing for the journal PloS ONE, did the math and found that Corvallis led the nation in patented inventions as well as economic output, personal income and preventing violent crime. You'll also find that Corvallis is an easy place to navigate. The downtown and University neighborhoods are highly walkable, and the city has been named one of the nation’s most bicycle-friendly. I encourage you to explore the many unique, locally-owned shops, restaurants,

art galleries and other attractions as part of your visit. Stroll our lovely Riverfront, which features a lively Farmers' Market on most Saturday and Wednesday mornings and a central fountain perfect for peoplewatching and cooling off on a warm summer day. Just blocks from downtown, you’ll find Oregon State University with its historic campus and a host of activities yearround. Whether your preference is Pac 12 athletics, notable lectures, music or theatre performances, or a visit to the OSU Beaver Store for a keepsake from your visit, OSU can meet your needs. Corvallis’ location in the heart of the Willamette Valley also means you are just minutes away from a multitude of other recreation opportunities. Pack a picnic and visit the picturesque wineries located throughout the region. You’ll find friendly people, award-winning wines and spectacular scenery. Or, try a day hike through the McDonald Forest, Finley National Wildlife Refuge or other beautiful settings just outside the city limits. The city
also hosts a variety of festivals, fairs and other special events throughout the year. Be sure to stop in at the Corvallis Visitor Center, 420 NW 2nd Street, and chat with an expert on things to see and do in Corvallis. As you get to know this highly livable college town, perhaps you’ll find yourself wondering about Corvallis as a place to live or do business. The influence of a major research university, thriving sectors of high tech, agribusiness, biosciences, and green energy, and an educated workforce result in a solid local economy. In fact, Forbes magazine ranks Corvallis among its top 20 Best Small Places for Business and Careers. Our local Chamber of Commerce or staff at the City of Corvallis can provide additional information about doing business here. As your stay with us ends, I hope you’ll agree that Corvallis is a very special place. Thanks for your visit; please come again soon! Warmly, Julie Manning, Mayor

or a town of this size, there is no shortage of cuisine options available. Chef and owner Kimber Hoang of Magenta, serves up different foods of Southeast Asia using organic local produce and meats into her seasonal menus. Big River offers a wide variety of healthy menu choices that utilize ingredients found in and around the Willamette Valley and from the Oregon Coast- which is only an hour away. del Alma brings fresh vibrant flavors of Latin America, while Aqua focuses on serving up steaks and seafood in imaginative ways. More casual atmospheres can be found at several local breweries, namely Block 15 and Flat Tail Brewing. American Dream Pizza features gourmet pizzas, hand rolled crusts, homemade pizza sauces and an amazing array of cheeses and toppings. Just upstairs is the Crowbar who takes pride in mixing tasty cocktails using their liquor infusions and freshly muddled juices. Many restaurants in town serve local wines for just the right pairings- but you can also go out to several of the sixteen wineries that comprise the “Heart of Willamette Valley Wineries” and have some

By Mary Pat Parker & Marci Sischo Wineries Home of many locally owned & nationally known wineries, the Heart of Willamette Wineries invite you to come sip and come savor all of their flavors. These boutique vineyards enjoy some of the most favorable grape-growing conditions in the Willamette Valley and the wine makers will gladly tell you their stories. This is part of what makes wine tasting here is so much fun. Mostly family owned, these stewards place equally high value in producing quality pinots and other varietals while being completely committed to sustainable practices. The tasting rooms are set in beautiful countryside with plenty of opportunities to picnic, relax and explore. Breweries Five different breweries make their homes in Corvallis. Block 15 pairs their amazing beers, made with organic base malt, imported specialty malts and Northwest hops, with excellent, locally-sourced food and makes both following strict sustainability practices. Flat Tail Brewing has won several awards over the years and their sports bar atmosphere makes it a fun place to watch a game. Sky High, Mazama Brewing and Oregon Trail Brewery housed in the Old World Deli all offer great venues and brews. In addition Continued on page 22 w w w. v i s i t c o r v a l l i s . c o m

Benton County may be best known for its wine and microbrews, but our distilleries are making news, too. We’re home to Four Spirits Distillery, known for its small-batch vodkas and brand new bourbon whiskey, and Vivacity Spirits, which specializes in a super-smooth vodka made from local organic corn.

hether you are a birding or biking enthusiast, you can find it all in and around Corvallis. Bird lovers will appreciate the care that the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge has taken to provide a winter habitat for migrating Dusky Canada geese. With over 5000 acres of protected land, visitors can view these nomadic fowl in the winter months and explore other native species that call the refuge home year-round. Other birding hot spots in or near Corvallis include the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area, Chip Ross and Avery Parks, Mardi’s Meadow, the Jackson-Frazier Wetland and Beazell Memorial Forest. The Corvallis Audubon Society offers frequent birding field trips on foot and on bike. Speaking of bikes, did you know that Corvallis has over 60 miles of biking and hiking trails throughout town and into surrounding countryside? Not only does the City of Corvallis maintain a network of paved paths, Corvallis and Benton County parks provide a variety of paved and unpaved trails that provide easy access to beautiful natural areas. Ask for a trail suggestion at one of the many bike shops or at the Corvallis Visitor Center. Your off-road adventure begins at Bald Hill Natural Area where you can set out on a variety of adventures. Three separate parking lots lead to paved trails branching along the base of the hill and several miles of dirt and gravel trails that circle and climb to the summit of the hill, as well as
connect to the Fitton Green Natural Area. You’re liable to see deer, coyote and many species of birds. Is it “city riding” you prefer? There are twenty miles of paved multi-use paths in town and there are many roads in the area that offer wide shoulders and light traffic. Depending on the route you choose you can experience rolling hills, local agriculture or - if you’re up to it - go for a challenge up Sulpher Springs Road or the impressive climb to Marys Peak. Marys Peak is the highest point in the Coastal Range at an elevation of 4,097 feet, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Cascades or the ocean. If you’d rather explore on two feet instead of two wheels, we’re pleased to tell you there’s more than fifty great hikes nearby. You can choose a walk through town and tour two distinct historic districts, alley art and stroll along the riverfront, or you can explore the great outdoors at nearby Peavy Arboretum, the gateway to the McDonald Research Forest. Make sure
to visit the astonishing Starker Forest only minutes from town, too. Additional hiking information is available at our Visitor Center. There are plenty of opportunities for other outdoor adventures as well. Make sure to check the resource section in the back of this guide for information on where to access the river for boating, swimming, fishing or for nearby golf courses, gardens, covered bridges and more. My name is Bill Dion-Watson and I’m an account representative for Peterson Cat. I consult with government agencies on large equipment purchases. Traveling is very important to maintain exceptional customer service throughout my sales territory, so I'm out of town quite a bit. I use the Eugene Airport because it's just so convenient. After a long trip it's nice to just walk off the plane, get into my car, and in 10 minutes I'm home. Fly Easy,
