ARCHERY HUT

hen you walk into The Archery Hut in Lebanon, the store is filled wall to wall with everything one could need for bow hunting. With Owner John Stone’s expertise, just about any question could be answered about the sport. Forty-two years ago John and Wilma Stone started The Archery Hut out of their Lebanon home. Since then they have expanded their home to include an upstairs which houses the store and a 19-lane indoor bow range behind the house. The Stones moved to Lebanon on Nov. 6, 1970, to be closer to Wilma’s parents. “When we moved here, we realized there was no place in the Willamette Valley to get archery gear.” John said. John was also working in the sheet metal industry when the couple opened the store. “Since then I have retired from my real job,” he said. In 1986, the Stones added the store over the carport. “I saw what happened to my friend’s store in California. When he moved out of his house and into a store, the cost of rent brought him down,” John said. “This was the smartest economic decision. I don’t have to go somewhere and I don’t have to worry about rent.” John has been bow hunting since he was a boy. “All I ever do is bow hunting,” he said. “I love being out there and being close to the animals.” John has hunted all over the world and shot many different types of animals including cougar, deer and elk, but his most thrilling hunt was hunting the cape buffalo in South Africa in 2010.

Wilma and John Stone opened “The cape buffalo kills more people than lions, leopards and all the rest of the animals down there,” he said. “It is very intense. If he doesn’t take kindly to that arrow, he will be there in a heartbeat. They weigh about a ton and their horns will be on the ground headed your way.” The Stones had an acquaintance killed about two years before John went over. “I only wanted one and I got him,” John said. “He was on my bucket list.” John is also a NAA Level 3 coach. He gives lessons to anyone who wants to learn. “If you buy your equipment from us, you get an hour of free lessons,” John said. Otherwise lessons are $50 for an hour. Lessons are broken up into half hour sessions. “Most people are extremely tired after a half an hour, so we send them home to work on the skills they have learned and have them come back for a second half hour lesson in a couple of weeks.” One of his customers bought a bow and six arrows. Just a couple of days later he was back in the shop with bent arrows.

The Archery Hut in their Lebanon house in 1974. Since then they have expanded. The store is now located above their house and a 19-lane indoor range behind their house.

“We straightened the arrows out for him and took him to our range where we taught him how to properly use his bow,” John said. “That season he went out and shot an antelope, 5-by-5 bull elk and a 4-by-4 black tail.” John has had kids as young as 5 come in for lessons. “Archery is a family sport,” said Wilma. “Anybody of any age can get into it and you don’t have to be better than anyone else.” The Archery Hut is located at 190 Crowfoot Road in Lebanon, and is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. They are closed on Sunday. For more information about the business, you can call them at 541-259-2697, email at archeryhut@centurytel.net or go to archeryhut.com.

HOMEGROWN GARDENS

ooking for something for your garden? Home Grown Gardens has it all — and they are bigger than they look.

The 1.3-acre Corvallis business has several varieties of plants and flowers from small house plants and seasonal flowers to large fruit trees. The store also has a focus on organic and sustainable garden products, and earth friendly solutions. “We don’t have a lot of chemicals,” said Jeff Cope, one of the owners of Home Grown Gardens. Cope runs the business with his wife, Donna, and son Opie.

Formerly known as the Corvallis Nursery, the business was owned by Carol and Mary Knolls in the 1960s. They ran it as a seasonal store. In 1997 it was purchased by Eric Helpenstell and the name was changed to Home Grown Gardens. The Copes bought the nursery in 2007, changed it to a year-round store and expanded the variety of plants available to customers. The Copes produce about 30 percent of all the plant material that goes out to their customers. Copes’ horticulture experience goes back 40 years including landscape contracting, urban park management, botanical garden management, adjunct faculty in the horticulture program at a community college and certified arborist. The Copes came from California. When Jeff and Donna decided to move, they invited Opie to move with

them. Since moving to Oregon, Donna and Opie have learned on the job and become plant experts as well.

The crew crew at Home Grown Grown Gardens from from left Kurt Dellwo, Gardens Tim Dale, Opie Cope, Donna Cope, Jeff Jeff Cope, Sharon Sharon New and Krista Brumbaugh.

“Opie has really focused on the shrub buying and production part of the business. Anymore when I have a question, I go to him,” Copes said. “We are nursery people now.”

and landscaping construction crew to help with projects off site.

When they moved north, they had to relearn what plants grow best in a wetter climate.

“The projects are very personal for the people we are doing them for,” he said.

“My favorite plant in California was the jacaranda tree, but in Oregon it is the hosta,” Cope said. “Lemon trees grow down in California all the time, but up here they are considered exotic. It’s just a different climate.”

Copes said that people from all over Oregon go to his store because they know he has what they need.

Recently the Copes have extended into the landscaping business. “Customers came in asking for services in their personal gardens and it has evolved over time.” Copes said. The business now has a landscaping maintenance

“We serve south Corvallis and south into Junction City,” he said. “We have customers that come to us from all parts of Corvallis and even Albany. We have become a destination nursery for customers in Salem, Eugene and parts of the coast. Our customers say we’ve got the best quality plant materials. We pride ourselves in that and it makes us feel good.”

FISHER FUNERAL HOME

In the community for

By Amanda Nowacki | Mid-Valley Media Group

more than a century,

lthough it began as a dual business dealing in both furniture and funerals, Fisher Funeral Home is still going strong after 104 years. The company was originally a funeral home and furniture business called “Fisher-Braden Furniture and Undertaking” and was located on Third and Broadalbin, where the Two Rivers Market is now. It was opened by Abel and Mary Fisher, and their children, E.C. Fisher and wife Hazel, and Ethel Braden and husband Sam.

Fisher Funeral Home is known for its ivy-covered building in downtown Albany and its friendly staff.

A

“They were furniture builders and undertakers,” said Wally Ordeman, one of the current owners. “It was a normal occurrence for furniture makers to be funeral directors since they made the caskets.” When the funeral home and furniture store separated, it is believed that the Bradens stayed with the furniture store

and the Fishers stayed with the funeral home. It was in 1922 that the funeral home moved into the current building. E.C. and Hazel had two daughters: Martha and Alice. Alice married John Summers, who was active in the business until he passed away. Martha married Walter Kropp and they stayed with the business. Martha and Walt had two daughters: Alice and Mary Kropp. Alice married Dan Ordeman. Dan passed away in 1997. Alice Ordeman is still at Fisher Funeral Home and has worked there since the early 1950s. Her sons, Tom and Wally Ordeman work beside her as well as Tom’s wife, Denice, and Wally’s son, Perry. At one point Fisher Funeral Home had offices in Brownsville, Halsey and Jefferson. “Over the years we have served generations of families helping them take care of those things they need,” Wally

said. “We create relationships with these families. The most rewarding part of our careers is the gratitude of the people we have helped in very traumatic times in their lives.”

Fisher Funeral Home has tried to be progressive through the years to serve their families, but there are a few traditions they keep to help their families.

Throughout the years, the Fisher Funeral Home staff and family have also tried to serve the community civilly through service clubs, boards, commissions and volunteerism.

“We are always answering our own phones at night. We rarely use an answering service,” Wally said. “We also have someone at the door during services to greet people. It’s small touches like that that are pretty remarkable this day in age.”

All of the Ordemans agree that it is extremely rewarding to know that they have made an impact in a very tangible way when people are hurting.

Because Fisher Funeral Home has been established for so long, it has built relationships with hospice, police, hospitals and the community.

“Humor is a big part of this environment,” Wally said. “When people are grieving, some people handle this with humor. Everyone handles grief in a different way. We can’t be afraid to not only cry with families, but laugh with them as well.”

many times over the years how he could work with his family every day.

Over the last 100 years things in the business have changed.

“For us, it works.” he said. “We all have our own specific roles, but the same goals.”

When Alice started working at Fisher Funeral Home during her high school years, every family had a night or two of viewing, service with a casket in a church and every service had a procession to the cemetery with a reception to follow.

Alice is asked why she hasn’t retired after more than 60 years in the business.

As Tom Tom and W Wally, ally, the next genera generation tion began, things started to change to less traditional. “People’s “People’s decisions are not as faith based as they used to be, be,”” Wally Wally said. “They are now now reflections reflections by how how the person lived and ho how w the family sa saw w them.” There are also more pre-arrangements and pre-fundings done as well as more memorial serservices and celebrations celebrations of life. Wally Wally has been asked

“Why would I retire?” she asked. “I love my family and we work well together.” All of the Ordemans say a key factor is communication. munication. “We “We are talking to each other about specific specific needs of the family from little things to things,” Wally Wally said. big things,”

“We have managed to maintain this business family business through some of the very trying times of the world such as World War II, the Great Depression and Vietnam. We were affected by the some of the same things these families have faced but we have still found the victories in what we do,” Wally said. Wally said they wouldn’t be where they are today without the staff they have had. “Throughout the years we have had embalmers, funeral directors and support staff that that have have helped us tremendously tremendously.” .”

The Story of

In the fall of 1979, we transformed an old funky cafe into a handcrafted veggie restaurant. Our menu was limited and our patrons sometimes forced to imitate sardines because of our lack of space, but each year we added more delectables to the menu and more “Normalites” to the venue. In September of 1984, we enlisted the help of many friends to take down everything but the front wall of the restaurant and created in its place our long planned dream — a larger kitchen(!), more seating space, an upstairs and a beautiful outdoor dining area. Changes still occur as needs and new ideas surface. We now serve a fine selection of NW Wines, Beers, fresh juice, Margaritas & cocktails. Keeping the dynamic energy alive keeps the restaurant growing.

Furniture For Yourself... 115 Come Discover Blackledge Furnitur Years! We’ve Been Furnishing Oregon Homes Since 1901

The exterior of Blackledge Furniture, Second Street between Jefferson and Adams, circa 1905.

We’ve never been just about furniture. Since 1901 we’ve been about the way you live!

During the 1940’s the selection of furniture was expanded by the addition of new lines of merchandise. This firm sold well-known products such as Atwater Kent radios, Hotpoint appliances and Drexel Furniture.

We don’t believe in talking much about the

past, but may we take a few minutes and reminisce with those who have been here many years, with the hopes that it will be of interest to later arrivals to review a little of the history on this occasion of our 115th Anniversary. Founded in 1901 by O.J. Blackledge who had recently arrived from Iowa with his family, the small store soon expanded from new and used furniture to include wallpaper, musical instruments, paint and even undertaking, as was quite common for furniture stores at that time.

The old Montgomery Ward store, where Blackledge Furniture is currently, circa 1928.

The Store was remodeled and enlarged in 1923 with the construction of a new store just to the south of the original site. The store grew through the 1920’s and went successfully through the depression years by developing one of the largest paint departments in the Willamette Valley. The interior of Blackledge Furniture in Corvallis, circa 1903.

In October of 1970, the firm moved to its newly remodeled store at 2nd and Jefferson. The renovated department store building gives the firm almost 35,000 square feet of sales space with a large adjoining warehouse and service area. The new store permits greater emphasis on the fashion aspects of home furnishings through room-like groupings and an expanded selection of quality merchandise lines. Customers enjoy browsing through the store for new decorating ideas.

We at Blackledge Furniture

recognize the importance of properly selected home furnishings. Our professionally trained staff is ready to help you with your home furnishings selection.
