This means that the adjustment of hearing aides is now done all on computer at Oregon Hearing Health Service rather than manually as they once were. Matheny and son keep themselves busy with the wide variety of hearing services they offer, from hearing tests and evaluations to hearing aid use, repair, sales, and servicing. They also carry several types of earplugs for a variety of uses. Matheny believes so much in his own product that he is also a consumer. The staff members at Oregon Hearing Health Service go out of their way to accommodate their customers, which includes being flexible in funding options. They accept most major insurances as well as Medicaid, and are willing to work with people when funding may be a challenge.
He explained, “If people don’t qualify for insurance or [certain] prices, we can work with just about any budget.” But their desire to help people goes beyond their stationary location on Market Street. Like few providers or health services are known to do today, the Matheny father and son duo schedules time to help residential facility members 55 years old and up with any hearing needs they may have. It’s clear the connection with the community is as important to Matheny as the quality of the service his company provides. You can almost hear him light up as he jovially explains, “We go to different retirement places and help them out. They just get on the phone and say ‘Dan the hearing man’s here, come on down,’ although now they say ‘Dan the Hearing Man, father of Sam the Hearing Man, is here.’”

But Baird explained, “We don’t have a website [that we sell through] because it’s next to impossible for a company our size to compete with Amazon and the others.”
He went on to explain, “We do sell online but it’s through other sites, so we’re kind of invisible.” What that all means for customers is that the bulk of this dedicated business is conducted in the same way it started over 30 years ago, face-to-face with the patrons that support it.

f there is one word that can summarize the journey of Albany’s J&J Electric, it would be change. The business that has remained in its original location on Southwest 22nd has seen the passage of several decades, interior design stylings, and opportunities on a grand scale. Opened by Jim and Jean Marquis, the once-cozy store began as an electrical contractor shop, even hosting its own electrician. Although the latter can no longer be found there, what customers will find is an
expanded building that houses a diverse inventory of quality products. As the years have passed, the company has remained solely within the family. It’s now owned and operated by the next generation, with Jim and Jean’s son Larry Tomlin and his wife Marge. These days, the business prides itself on its wide selection of lighting fixtures as well as residential lighting. dubbing it the “Disneyland of lighting.” It’s an accurate description, with the light casting rainbows off shiny chandeliers and various shapes and styles of classy fixtures adorning walls all throughout the store. There is something special about the imagery of so many beautiful lighting options arranged in such a way. Of course, the home decor, clothing, gift, and jewelry pieces that are carefully inlaid within the whimsical arrangement certainly grab the eye. Ownership is not the only necessary adjustment that J&J has endured. So, too has it experienced the dramatic shift in lighting products as changes such as the introduction of LED lights affected the lighting market. As it became less common to carry
products made domestically, J&J has worked to keep its selection made in the United States whenever possible. The company takes pride in the hundreds of different manufacturers that its customers can choose from, both in store as well as online. The website j-jelectric.com offers 300,000 light fixtures alone, but if customers can’t find what they’re looking for the company offers the option of a specialty order. As members of the community,
Larry and Marge have made long-lasting contributions to the town. They are particularly proud of doing the lighting for the Evergreen Hospice building. It not only has supported many other families over the years, but the Tomlins as well: Larry’s mother received Evergreen’s wonderful care in January before she passed. The Tomlins also have a spe-
cial place for SafeHaven Humane Society, having hosted several events for them over the years. Last December J&J had an event to donate 20 percent of its sales for the day to Safehaven. During that day, two rescue dogs were brought to the store to mingle; one of the dogs found his forever home with a customer. Aptly named, JJ the dog is proof that the legacy of this store is not simply about a business, but the people and the community it serves.
J&J Electric has been on Southwest 22nd in Albany since its founding, but the business has changed to meet the changing requirements of customers over the years.
