It’s time to plan activities for summertime

In less than two months, mid-valley students will be out of school, and parents will wonder how to keep their kids busy until the next school year begins. Looking for outdoor events, camps or sports? We’ve got you covered. Information you need to know about summer youth activities can be found in “Summer in the City.” We’ve included descriptions of what dozens of organizations in Linn and Benton counties offer for preschoolers, elementary students, teenagers and even adults. We’ve also added some information this year about activities in Marion County. Whether you’re interested in acting or summer camps, reading or crafts, there’s something for everyone. ALBANY PARKS & RECREATION 2016 Summer Camps

Albany Parks and Recreation Camps are back for another exciting summer filled with incredible games, swimming, wonderful adventures, and wacky fun! It is a great way to keep your child physically active and engaged during the summer months while building their social interaction skills. They’ll enjoy a wide variety of fun-filled themed camps including games, sports, arts, crafts, and more! Most camps will visit the COOL! Pool a couple of afternoons for water fun. Many of our camps include field trip adventures, fun guests, and funny skits for the kids to enjoy! Check out the exciting places we’ll be visiting. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, but each child needs to bring their own lunch. Your child will also receive a camp t-shirt. Let your child’s summer journey start here as they reconnect with old friends and make new ones! To register call 541-9177777 or print out the forms on line and bring them in to the Albany Parks and Recreation office. Classes are $127 for in city and $168 for out of city for a week of adventure and fun. All classes are for ages 6 to 11 and held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Locations will be announced. Registration: Registration for any of the following programs can be done by phone, mail or in person at the Albany Parks and Recreation office, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. To register call 541-917-7777. The parks department also offers many volunteer opportunities for teens and adults. Volunteers are needed to assist with day camps, Fun in the Park, or at events like River Rhythms PreConcert Art and NW Art & Air Festival. Contact Lynne Smith at 917-7771 for more information. Things to Know Before You Go! Children must wear their camp t-shirt on field trip days!` Scholarships are available. Please contact us for more information. Weekly schedules are tentative and subject to change. Children should bring a swim suit and a towel on pool days. Maximum ratio of staff to children is 1 to 10. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, but each child needs to bring their own lunch. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Reach For the Stars When I grow up, I want to be…What parent doesn’t want their child to dream big dreams and reach for the stars? They can be anything they want to be. This camp will help your future president, doctor, or teacher learn all the possibilities! We’ll visit the OSU Vet School, take a peek at the Fire Department, tour the Police Station, and get a cool bird’s eye view of a restaurant. In between the field trips, crafts, and games, they’ll drop in at COOL! pool for a couple of afternoons in between exploring all the options! Dates: June 27-July 1 Camp Champs “If you play it, they will come!” Bocce ball, volleyball, kickball, pickle ball, and bowling…we are playing it all! Have your camp champ join us this week as we learn all about sports and make dreams come true. Get your child up, active, and discovering that that each of us really is an All-Star! We’ll party in the pool on a couple of afternoons, bust a move with Zumba, as well as make a visit to Lakeshore Lanes. Dates: July 5-July 8 Follow the Fork Your young chef will explore playful and imaginative recipes as they learn to make everything from Stromboli and enchiladas to jam pinwheels and more! Your campers will “follow the fork” as they play fun food relays and compete

at food trivia. Campers will prepare foods, learn valuable tips, practice food prep skills and learn about food safety. They’ll even decorate their own chef hat! Every top chef knows that good food and being physically active are essential to keep the apron fitting so we’ll make a couple of visits to COOL! Pool. Dates: July 11-July 15 Mission Possible! Calling all future secret agents! Disguises, cracking codes, and solving crimes are just the beginning as your child joins other top agents at this camp designed to train the best of the best. The mission is possible with help of our campers! Learn how to be stealthy, sneaky, and observant as we aim to solve the mystery of the week. We’ll visit the Police Department for tips on all the spy skills you need and we’ll take a dip or two in COOL! Pool as we take a break from our crime cracking! Dates: July 18-July 22 It’s a Jungle Out There We’re on the lookout for the furry, the feathered, and the fantastic this week as we explore the world in search of animals of all kinds. If your child is an animal lover, they’ll want to join us in a fun-filled safari adventure. Explore the wild and learn about different animals. We’ll visit Safari Sam’s, the Safe Haven Humane Society, and spend a couple of afternoons at COOL! Pool! It is five great days of wildlife fun, crafts, games, and

more! Dates: July 25-July 29 Taste Buds There’s no need to have a kitchen nightmare when your little chef tries his or her hand with culinary creations! If your child loves making a mess in the kitchen and can’t wait to be the next top chef, this is the camp for them! They’ll tickle their taste buds while cooking up something special with pals. From pizza pinwheels and cheese cake bites to other fabulous food delights, your child will gain an introduction to basic cooking techniques, food preparation, and kitchen safety…all while having fun with friends! We’ll decorate chef attire, create unique recipe holders, and play food games. Every sweet tooth knows you have to stay physically active, so we’ll spend a couple of afternoons at COOL! Pool. Dates: Aug. 1- Aug. 5 Ocean Commotion Explore all the wonders of the water! Under the sea, down where it’s wetter, down where its better…your child will explore the depths of Davy Jones locker and discover the fascinating life that exists in the ocean. We’ll swim in COOL! Pool a couple of afternoons, play water games, do sea crafts, sand crafts, and more! We’ll set sail for the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport and enjoy a day of fun! Join us as we make a commotion in the ocean!

Dates: Aug. 8 – Aug. 12 Mad Science Experiment, discover and invent… your young Einstein becomes a topnotch scientist this week! Test tubes bubble while the mad scientists work! They’ll explore the excitement and create weird experiments, make a volcano or two, and get caught up in the magic of science and engineering. Lab coats are not required, but your child should dress to get messy! The discovery will continue with hands-on activities and a field trip to the OMSI. A couple of afternoons will be spent splashing it up at COOL! Pool. Dates: Aug. 15 – Aug. 19

YOUTH BRITISH SOCCER CAMP

Albany Parks and Recreation is proud to partner with Challenger Sports to bring one of the largest and most popular camps in the USA and Canada to the City of Albany. Having fun has never been easier! British Soccer Camps provide players of all ages and abilities with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international experts. Each day includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical

practices, small-sided games, coached scrimmages, and a daily tournament. Equally important, the Challenger coaching staff provides your child with lessons in respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship, and leadership. Albany Community Pool offers water aerobics (shallow) from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and deep water aqua jogging from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Cool Pool offers river current classes from 11 a.m. to noon Monday through Firday and 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Recreation Swims Recreation swims are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Children ages 6 years and younger must be accompanied in the water by an adult. COMMUNITY POOLS Albany Community Pool

Albany Community Pool’s water temperature is 84 degrees. Some of our amenities include an iceberg to climb, log runner, a rope swing, diving boards, slide, and basketball hoops. We are a six lane 50-meter facility ranging from 3 feet to 12 feet in depth. Swim Lessons Albany Community Pool will be offering American Red Cross Youth Lessons this summer for children ages 3 years and up. Registration and session dates will be listed below. COOL! Pool

Location: 705 Railroad St. S.E., Albany Information: 541-917-7751 This summer at Cool! Pool will be our 11th summer of fun with swim lessons, recreation swims (including our popular Parent/Tot swim, where parents may bring their children 6 and under), family swims, lap swim, water aerobics. Cool! Pool is also available for private rentals and birthday parties. We have a large “Zero-Depth Entry” play area with water up to 18 inches deep. This area contains a playground style play structure. Another feature of Cool! Pool is our Lazy River. This is an oval shaped area of water 3 feet deep with a current which gently pushes guests around in the oval. The River area is not only used for recreation swim times, but is also the location of our water aerobics class. Participants in this class receive the added benefit of the current pushing against them, adding resistance. Cool! Offers a rectangular area with maximum depth of 4.5 feet, where guests have the opportunity to play basketball or just swim and enjoy themselves. This area is also used during our lap swim for fitness swimming.

The area of the pool which stands out tallest is our big, twisty slide. With a lifeguard in the catch basin of the pool, children of all ages and heights are able to ride our slide, with big smiles on their faces. Albany’s carousel & studio is a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to building a traditional carousel in Albany’s downtown historic district. Albany Regional Museum

Located in historic downtown Albany, the Albany Regional Museum welcomes visitors with monthly events and changing exhibits. CAMPS 4-H Summer Camp

Our theme is “Solve the Mystery… at 4-H Camp.” Camp will be filled with exciting activities and lots of fun! Swimming, archery, adventure swing, canoeing, crafts, skits and nature activities will go along with theme-based activities throughout the week. Some classes will also focus on different LEGO building techniques such as mosaics and sculptures. And we end every class with time for creative play … the kids always enjoy the extra opportunity to modify their “model of the day” or create something new with the giant piles of LEGO Bricks we bring. Campers will also learn how to magnify, diminish and redirect force to move objects at different speeds and in different directions. This camp is loads of fun and learning for budding builders. Linn-Benton Community College Community Education presents a new Summer Program for Youth and Teens. Locations include Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon and Sweet Home. Make Your First 3D Video Game Develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of game play, and story telling. Each day they will rotate between two studios, working with two experienced art teachers. Corvallis School District Food Service Department will be offering free meals at eligible sites around Corvallis, Philomath and Adair Village, often in conjunction with other programs such as Boys & Girls Club, Parks & Rec, KidSpirit and Osborn Aquatic. This program is open to all children 18 years of age and under, regardless of household income. All children need to do is show up at any designated site and time to receive a meal. All meals must be eaten on site. All food is prepared fresh daily and transported to the various locations to be handed out at the assigned times. Meals contain all of the nutritional components to meet or exceed state and federal nutritional standards. Also, much of the produce used is locally sourced.
