ummertime and the living is, well, stressful—vacation plans to finalize, activities to keep the kids occupied now that they’re out of school, getting in shape for pool season – you get the idea. Check out our tips for making the most out of those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.
BUILD A BETTER BEACH BOD
Whether the goal is to tighten and tone or shed those extra pounds you put on over the winter, Life Time Athletic and Work , at GreenStreet or CITYCENTRE, can help you get ready for your closeup. The athletic club at both locations feature dedicated studios for group fitness, cycle, yoga and Pilates programming as well as a full menu of nutrition-focused meals at Life Cafe. Meanwhile, Orangetheory Fitness at Century Square in College Station offers month-to-month memberships to fit your lifestyle and fitness goals. The unique workouts from rowing to cardio to strength training are designed to deliver results fast.
WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM
One way to cool off this summer is to try one of the artisanal ice cream cones at Lick Honest Ice Creams in Century Square and East River opening later this year. Each batch is hand-churned in-house with no artificial colors or flavors, high fructose corn syrup or preservatives. Make time to walk into the heavenly scents of fresh cooked waffle cones at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at CITYCENTRE.
GET READY FOR SANDAL SEASON
There’s nothing quite like the Deluxe Spa Pedicure from Galleria Spa Salon Boutique, at Century Square in College Station. The 90-minute service includes the basics like filing, buffing and trimming but also a warm cleansing footbath, foot and leg massage, exfoliation, hydrating mask and a paraffin dip designed to leave feet feeling smooth and silky. Pure bliss. To really make sure you’re ready for Beach Season, make sure to try the multitude of services at the CITYCENTRE Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center
HIT THE BEACH IN STYLE
Why wear last year’s bathing suit when there are so many new styles to choose from? Grass Stains at Century Square in College Station will be stocking a small selection of bathing suits for the first time this summer. While you’re there, pick up a tote bag perfect for stashing everything from sunscreen to shades. Or check out the one-piece suits and crocheted bikini tops and bottoms at Urban Outfitters, CITYCENTRE.
TREAT YOURSELF
Nothing beats a little retail therapy when you’re stressed out, but you don’t have to break the bank to indulge yourself. At Merge Boutique, Century Square, you’ll find trendy clothing and accessories all under $50, while Kendra Scott , both at Century Square and CITYCENTRE, has a selection of affordable earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces, charms, and chains. You really can find anything your retail therapy is craving at CITYCENTRE with furniture finds at Z Gallerie or West Elm , fun accessories at Lily Rain , Brahmin , or Altar’d State, athletic gear at lululemon , Nike, or Epic- Cycles, and much more.
SUMMER IN THE CITY
Can’t get away this summer but long for a great escape? Plan a stay-cation at The Moran , CITYCENTRE, where modern style meets world-class service with amazing shopping, dining, and experience options just outside your door. Slow it down out of the city by booking a room at The George, the newest luxury hotel at Century Square in College Station. With a focus on gathering friends and family, the hotel includes large community lounge areas, an expansive porch, a craft cocktail bar, a restaurant and a wine bar.
CATCH A MOVIE
With blockbuster season upon us, there’s no better place to catch a flick when the kids are driving you crazy than Star Cinema Grill at Century Square. The dine-in movie theater not only offers first-run film releases but also an extensive menu and a full-service bar with a wide selection of beer, wine, and spirits.
HEAD INSIDE TO BEAT THE HEAT
For family fun, get out of the heat and into the air conditioning at Bowl & Barrel at CITYCENTRE or 810 Billiards & Bowling at Green Street
SLOW THINGS DOWN
The mission at Sweet Paris Creperie & Café in Century Square and CITYCENTRE is to usher guests away from their daily hustle and bustle and transport them to a unique and delectable dining experience, no passport needed. After tasting many versions of “la crêpe” around the world, from street carts to fine restaurants, the owners just knew they had to bring the international staple home.
GIVE MOM A BREAK
Too hot to cook? Why not take the whole family to kid-friendly Hopdoddy Burger Bar at Century Square in College Station or CITYCENTRE in Houston? The hand-cut fries doused in chili queso are to die for, but the sweet shakes—we’re looking at you, Oreo Cookies ‘N Cream—are not to be missed.

Houston’s Premier Food Hall
Welcomes Three New Concepts
By TM Studio
Finn Hall, Houston’s premier food hall, is comprised of eight independently operated eating establishments and a full elevated bar in the center of the hall. With a nod to European food halls where quality, experience, and atmosphere reign above all else, the beloved hall continues to attract the next generation of diverse, and high-profile restaurants.
“As the ultimate Downtown destination for food lovers, we are excited to welcome new and delicious flavors to Finn Hall,” said Miranda Cartwright, General Manager of Property Operations at Midway. “We are thrilled to enter the new year with the addition of unique selections of diverse cuisines and continue enhancing Finn Hall’s dining experience.”
Fire Noodz , a spicy noodle shop, is making its debut at Finn Hall. Created by Chris Nguyen, Sonny Nguyen and Mark Tiu, Fire Noodz is the first venture since the owners left Oh My Gogi. At Fire Noodz, guests will experience spices and flavors and enjoy fiery signature menu items including Thai curry ramen and fried cheesy fire balls. Fire Noodz officially opened in February 2023, and will be open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Chef Reginald Scott is bringing the flavor to Finn Hall with the addition of The Smoke , a fast-casual BBQ restaurant specializing in smoked meats, vegetables,
and delectable sides. Some signature menu items at The Smoke are 48-hour brined smoked chicken wings, a jumbo turkey leg, Peyton’s pickles, and the Smokey Bowl as a vegan option. The Smoke had its grand opening on February 5, 2023 and its operating hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The owners of Craft Burger, a fan favorite specializing in gourmet all-natural burgers at Finn Hall, are bringing Carol Kay’s , a first-to-market concept to Downtown’s premier food hall. Shannen and Stacey Tune’s new concept incorporates southern and Caribbean cuisine. Carol Kay’s offers smothered biscuits and gravy, cornbread beef hash and eggs, jerk chicken, curried chicken rice bowls, quinoa salmon bowls, and more. Carol Kay’s opened in February 2023 and operates Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fire Noodz, The Smoke, and Carol Kay’s will neighbor other independently operated dining establishments at Finn Hall, including Craft Burger, Papalo Mercado, Pizza Zquare , Maui Bento, Greenway Coffee , Swallow’s Nest and Cranky Carrot Juice Co. Finn Hall also offers a variety of seating and server options including the bar, semi-private booths, a full-service communal seating area, and outdoor patio, allowing visitors to grab a coffee, cocktail, or food and enjoy in a vibrant environment.

Midway’s Intentional Design Draws Eyes to Houston and Beyond
Midway's Executive Vice President shares the design strategy behind your favorite properties.
By Andrew Paul
David Hightower knows the level of your interest in Midway properties. Literally.
“Most people don’t really care a whole lot about what’s going on beyond 20 feet above them,” the Executive Vice President with nearly 45 years in the industry confides. “They’re more interested in the space they occupy.”
That sense and respect of space is what makes Midway’s approach to mixed-use properties unique. Be it CITYCENTRE, Century Square, GreenStreet, or any of their upcoming projects, Hightower and his colleagues work to create unique, inviting places for Texans to live, work, shop, relax, and most importantly, enjoy.
“It’s the spaces people occupy,” stresses Hightower. “We want to make that an enjoyable and inviting experience. A pretty experience.”
Accomplishing this, however, requires far more consideration than the kinds of decorative flowers and plants that dot Midway’s thoroughfares—although they certainly have those. Hightower explains that he and the company's many stakeholders, “spend a great deal of time looking at the environment in which a project is situated,” he says.
Take, for example, Houston’s East River development—Midway’s upcoming, 150-squareacre mixed-use destination scheduled for completion later this year. Located in one of the oldest working class regions of the city, Hightower explains East River will pay homage to that history, taking into account the “gritty, industrial flavor” of what was, at one time, the upper end of Houston’s original shipping channel.
That history—generations of multicultural,
blue collar families living and working together—will be reflected in East River’s property. And being equivalent to 65 blocks of downtown Houston real estate ensures there is plenty of space to do so.
“We want a new, urban community that is open and inviting. We want all our surrounding neighbors to come and enjoy being here,” Hightower says. “We’re not going to build this little walled city in the area. We’re going to open it up and honor the old city street grid pattern.” He goes on to explain that combining both an area’s history and modernity comes naturally to Midway. “It’s a passion, and it’s not something that somebody is forcing us to do.”
That said, the business is not without its challenges. One of Hightower’s roles at the company involves managing all the different design and architecture teams, coordinating and collaborating to ensure an optimal final design that blends workspaces, homes, recreation, and retail opportunities. “There’s a lot of coordination, a lot of communication, between design teams to ensure there’s a seamless transition from one space to the other,” he says.
Hightower likens the role to being the conductor of one large orchestra composed of individual, complementary sections of musicians. “It doesn’t always happen,” he says with a laugh. “Occasionally someone drops their music and they get messed up. But that’s just part of what we do.”
Looking forward, Hightower is excited at the prospects ahead for the entire East River Midway team, including realizing an idea over six years in the making. In 2017, Hightower and his associates almost landed the opportunity to redevelop Houston’s historic ConocoPhillips building complex, but fell short. Last year, however, the chance reappeared, and Midway wasted no time in leaping to action. Soon, plans will be underway to transform the space into a new mixed-use property with untold possibilities, all while maintaining the historic integrity of the space itself.
“That’s the kind of thing we look for today. We’re not cookiecutter builders,” says Hightower.
“We truly look for unique opportunities that maybe a lot of people say they don’t have time to mess with it.”
In the end, Hightower explains, Midway is always about our relation to spaces, and what they can mean for our lives. “It all comes back to the people, and creating a really remarkable place that they want to come back to again and again,” he says. “Or they want to live in!

Spring into Fitness
By Kate Hull
Whether you’ve hit pause on pumping iron lately or maybe just slacked a bit on your spin class schedule, don’t fret. Gone are the days of ho-hum exercise antics that didn’t leave a lasting impression. At Midway Districts' cutting-edge fitness favorites, you'll find tailored training from the experts and total body wellness, setting you on the path to keep your physique and mind in tip-top shape. Even better, there are plenty of spots to find stylish gear to help you on your fitness journey. Get ready for a new you and a fitness regime that finally feels true to your actual lifestyle.
We’ve all tried to jump-start a new fitness plan, only to let it lose its luster along the way. Luckily, we've stacked the roster with group classes, pristine gyms, fitness centers, and wellness havens ready to help you unlock your potential from a class at Orangetheory Fitness at Century Square to the all-encompassing wellness center Life Time at GreenStreet and CITYCENTRE and everything in between and more.
The secret? For Randi Poullard, a studio leader at Life Time GreenStreet in the heart of downtown Houston with more than a decade of fitness experience, the key is finding community. And when in doubt, ask the experts. “Join a community!” she says. “Small or large group training is a great way to find people with similar interests that will help hold you accountable. Starting something new— especially joining a new team—can be intimidating. If the first class isn't the one you enjoyed, try something else!”
Life Time GreenStreet is a 56,000-square-foot athletic club that offers something for every kind of sweat session from exclusive yoga and Pilates to weight training and spin classes. It is also home to some of the top trainers in their field, like

personal trainer Cory Danna, ready to craft a personalized plan based on your needs. For Cory, crafting a routine that sticks and delivers results is all about giving yourself grace and deciding to take the leap.
“Every journey started with a first day and built from there,” he says. “It becomes more routine with time.” Cory recommends seeking out what classes or fitness type best suit your interests. Love to spend the weekend busting a move? Find a high-cardio dance class to get your blood pumping. All about those weights? Opt for strength training mixed with yoga.
And behind a solid regime is a trainer. “A trainer will provide you a personalized plan based on your specific goals and needs through science-based assessment, but where they really shine is accountability and education,” Cory says. “A personal trainer will act as your fitness professor, strongest ally, and biggest cheerleader.”
Nearby at Memorial Green, innovation is the name of the game. There, the future is no doubt now. The Hack Anti-Aging, Wellness, & Movement is celebrated for its cutting-edge approach to wellness and is Houston’s first Biohacking Studio, a type of fitness regime that uses science and technology to lead your body to its most optimal human performance. Dive in with personalized private training with oneon-one mobility sessions, or Pulsed Electro-
magnetic Field (PEMF)Therapy, Vasper Therapy, Hydrogen Therapy, Dry Sauna, and more.
Fitness is not one-size-fits all, and to keep things interesting and ensure a total body experience, make sure that your fitness focuses on all modalities, from weights and hitting the trails at Buffalo Bayou Park to yoga, stretching, and meditation.
“Taking care of your body is just as important as working it out,” Cory says. “Yoga and Pilates provide the support that we need to be as mobile and stable as possible to ensure that we can continue in fitness for a long time.”
A good trainer can keep you motivated, but when you need an extra boost to get that workout done, Cory says to put on your favorite workout outfit. “It's amazing the difference and motivation you feel in a new set of training apparel!” Cory says.
Cory’s must-have is the Ten Thousand shorts, heralded as the only training shorts you’ll ever need, designed by and for athletes. For Randi, lululemon is a must. “The Scuba half zip hoodie, Free-to-Be bra, and Wunder Train High-Rise tights are a staple of mine whether I am training, running, biking, or hitting the yoga mat,” she says.
You’ve got the gear, the trainer, and the great plan. Now go “have fun!” Randi says. “And remember to give yourself grace.”

There’s still time for that bestie brunch, but this season make way for me time .

16 DISTRICT by Midway
Okay, Y’all.
Time for some real talk. My own social calendar is too much to manage, let alone trying to coordinate with my friends, partner, and kids schedules. It can all be exhausting. So, guess what? I am done. (But take a breath, bestie. We are still on for that brunch date next Sunday, promise.) I am not nixing my entire social calendar. I am talking about reclaiming my own “me time.” It’s time for a solo date. Party of one. Me, myself, and I. I am taking myself out this spring, and I don’t have to go far. Midway District’s Memorial Green is setting the scene for a solo date to remember.
Before I plan the perfect date, let’s set a few things straight. “Me time” is important! I don’t mean to always go alone—but it’s not the most radical thing to want to fly solo on occasion. It’s self-care, after all, and I am here for it. Steps away from my front door in Memorial Green, I have access to a bucket list of my “treat yourself” favs. I am turning that list into an action plan—bucket list, no more. Follow along and find some inspo of your own.
The roster of shops, dining, and spas at Memorial Green reads like the perfectly curated date itinerary, and spoiler alert: it is. The biggest question is where to start and what to do next. Since this day is all about focusing on my best self, Clean Juice is my first stop. Its claim to fame is more than just an organic juicer. This quaint spot’s menu is chock-full of smoothies, light bites, and, of course, delicious juice to keep your body feeling good and satisfied. I opted for the Green Bowl paired with a coffee-lovers smoothie fav, the Coffee One.
Next up? A self-care duo a la Thrive Drip Spa followed by The Lash Lounge. Whenever I hit Thrive Drip Spa, I tend to go for the tried-and-true Hydrate Drip, but today I booked a Beauty Drip that generates a healthy glow and improves my skin complexion. Youthful glow? Absolutely. And since this
date is all about what makes me feel like my best self, I knew the team at the Lash Lounge would help me feel confident with a set of eye-catching lash extensions.
I am pulling out all the stops on this solo date, and diving into self-care from head to toe. Cue Isle Pedispa . While there, I made a mental note to bring my girls back for a group event. I picked the Isle Pedicure plus a salt scrub and, since this is a special occasion, finished with an Isle Manicure. This spot is extra cute and cozy; all I wanted was to make it last and soak up every bit of relaxation. While popping around to all my favorite spots was exactly what the wellness guru ordered, if I want a day only spent at the spa, I’m always up for Life Spa and Café just down the road at CITYCENTRE. With delicious health food, top-of-the-line treatments, and total care services, it’s a must-do, no matter the reason.
With my morning and afternoon filled with a deep dive into self-care mode, happy hour is now calling my name. It’s easy to be transported to a quaint European city street with a sip of the unique wines available at Memorial Green’s newest hot spot, VinSanto, opened in 2023. A crisp glass of anything they are serving up is just the ticket before perusing LAM Bespoke or booking an Uber and hitting more shops at CITYCENTRE. The day was so memorable, I decided to treat myself with something to remember it by. After strolling through Anthropologie , Madewell , and my favorite boutiques, I couldn’t resist Kendra Scott ’s Lee Gold Drop Earrings in iridescent drusy. Swoon.
Choosing where to close out the day with a bite to eat was, without a doubt, the hardest decision of the day. The top-notch dining around every corner at CITYCENTRE and back home in Memorial Green is hard to beat. There was a restaurant for any craving, but I decided to keep the self-care train going and grabbed a salad from Bellagreen , then headed to The Moran Hotel to check out what they had going on that day. The unmatched night-life events and atmosphere at Fireside was speaking to me to close out the perfect day. This was a solo date for the books, and I barely skimmed the surface of where to go and what to see. It’s official: The solo date is now a regular occurrence.

From Orange Grove to the Vineyards of Napa
Aggie Undergrad Shares Wine at Century Square.
By TM Studio
When you get Hunter Ham talking about wine, it’s hard to believe he hasn’t been working in the industry for decades. The sommelier at PORTERS Dining + Butcher didn’t know much of anything about wine when he moved to College Station from Orange Grove just a few short years ago to start school at Texas A&M. Now, he curates a wine list with well over 200 bottles for one of the finest restaurants in the Brazos Valley.
“I grew up in a family where you kind of have to pay your way, take care of yourself,” Ham says. “I didn’t work my first year of college, but after that first year, my parents said, ‘Get a job.’”
Ham found his first restaurant job in College Station at a spot that ultimately didn’t make it through the shutdowns of the pandemic. As the situation around the country improved, he landed an opportunity to serve as a waiter at PORTERS and found his calling.
“I befriended my boss, Nick Frobenius,” Ham says. Frobenius was running the PORTERS wine list at the time. “He introduced me to wine and the stories that are behind it.”
The stories surrounding the ancient beverage are part of what began Ham’s love affair with wine.
“Wine is a very beautiful thing,” Ham says. “It’s history, it’s culture, it’s a social connection for those who enjoy it.”
This social connection is another reason Ham finds serving and teaching about wine so fulfilling.
“I’ve met so many incredible people, heard so
many incredible stories, and it all started with wine,” he says. “It really connects people.”
It’s of course a pleasure to recommend fantastic wine off the expansive PORTERS list to aficionados, but Ham really loves introducing wine to folks who may be intimidated by the number of choices out there.
“There’s always a place to start,” Ham says. In fact, Ham says sommeliers love newcomers to wine. “If you come over and tell a somm, ‘I want to get in to wine but I don’t know where to start,’ that’s the best thing I can hear. Let’s go on this journey together.”
Between voracious wine knowledge reading, traveling to Napa, and working at PORTERS, Ham remains an Aggie student, focusing his studies on Geographic Information Science & Technology (GIST). This might seem a long way from wine sipping, but when asked, Hunter Ham has a plan to bring it all together.
“I want to own a company eventually that uses GIST land surface mapping to build vineyards,” Ham says. “One day I’d like to own my own vineyard.”
In the meantime, go let Hunter Ham pour you a glass of wine this Spring at PORTERS. He’ll be sure to have a recommendation.

White Burgundy Chardonnay. Most wine drinkers are no doubt familiar with Chardonnay. It’s one of the world’s most popular grapes and varieties. Burgundy, in France, is where the varietal originates, so a white burgundy is a special way to enjoy Chardonnay. This is a great easy drinking wine for long luxurious afternoons on the patio. Enjoying some white burgundy with east coast oysters is an experience that is hard to beat. For those who prefer an American grown option, try Sauvignon John's crisp, unoaked Chardonnay.

Chianti comes from the small Tuscany region in Italy. A beautifully complex wine, made from the Sangiovese grape, this high acid wine is great to pair with any food for dinner and works especially well with spring menus. Self-Care Spring is Here
Simple changes to your routine to bring out your best self yet.
By Kate Hull
Spring is in the air, and with it comes a palpable pull to start anew. Rebirth, rejuvenate, restore; whatever you want to call it, let’s focus that springtime energy inward with a little extra self-care this season to last through the year. And while we are here for that splurge facial (book it!), let’s talk day-to-day self-care. That one-note daily routine may need a shakeup.
From sunup to sundown, add these simple self-care-minded tips into your day for a boost in your self-image, self-worth, and overall well-being. Yes, yes, and yes!
NIX THAT NOISY ALARM
We are all guilty of hitting snooze one too many times on that loud, blaring alarm to jolt us out of bed. It’s time to sound the alarm on noisy wakeups. The National Institute of Industrial Health in Japan found that waking up with a loud jolt increases your heart rate and blood pressure and can increase overall anxiousness. Start your day a bit more gently with a light-based sunrise alarm and soothing sounds from smart sleep device companies like Hatch to ease into the day.

BUT FIRST, WATER
Don’t panic, no one wants to take away your oat milk latte or daily cold brew. This spring, however, lean into hydration and sip a glass of water before the caffeine. Sleep is a dehydrant and study after study points to the wellness benefits of intaking water first, like helping with overall hydration, digestion, and even boosting your energy. Make this your new self-care routine, and set out your favorite chic cup and mug each night before bed, ready to remind you to sip and savor the morning. Anthropologie’s wide selection of monogrammed, embellished, and lustered glasses are the perfect gift to your new hydrated self. Or try the Stanley Adventure Quencher at Urban Outfitters to keep that water cool all night long.
Where to find it: Anthropologie, Z Gallerie, Urban Outfitters, West Elm , Sur la Table, Paper Source, Altar’d State at CITYCENTRE.
WRITE IT DOWN
Whether to write down big moments, celebrate successes, manifest goals, or show yourself a little love, journaling is not just for
teenage diaries. One study found that for individuals with anxiety, journaling helped boost overall self-esteem and well-being, while others have found it lowers stress. Carve out ten to twenty minutes daily, weekly, or whatever fits your schedule to celebrate you. Start with listing three things you are grateful for each time and see where the pen takes you. We’ll bet it brings some added joy and maybe even a little more self-love. Here for that! Let your journal showcase your personality. Florals, bold colors, or chic leatherbound notebooks, let your vessel speak to your style.
Where to find it: Find chic pens, notebooks, and journals at Lily Rain or Paper Source in CITYCENTRE.
BREATH IN, BREATH OUT
You’ve got your fitness routine dialed, you’re hitting the gym and checking in with your trainer. (And if you’re not, turn to page 12 for some fitness routine reset inspiration). You’ve got your body right, it’s time to get your mind right. There’s a reason your Apple watch is cueing up a minute of breathing exercise to add calmness to your day. It helps! The Mayo Clinic found that meditation and breathing work can do everything from increase creativity, patience, and selfawareness to reducing negative emotions and managing stress. And it can be done anywhere at any time. If you’re new to quieting your mind, a variety of apps are at your fingertips to learn the calming practice. Or dive into meditation techniques with a Be Meditation class at Life Time GreenStreet. The sixty-minute class focuses on anapana, a word that refers to observation of your natural breath and works to relieve mental stress and improve concentration.

TURN OUT THE (BLUE) LIGHT
We all know sleep is important, but to end your day and ensure you’re getting the most restful, rejuvenating shut eye, turn off the blue lights and disconnect from your phone and screens. Staring at your phone, which gives off a blue light, can stunt your body’s natural ability to create melatonin and get some needed z’s. Instead, thirty minutes before you’re ready for shut eye, separate your phone from your bed and read a book, meditate, and let your body get the best rest possible. Don’t worry, you won’t need it for that pesky alarm anymore. Of course, the best thing you can do to improve sleep is to make sure you have a great mattress or sleep accessories to help, no matter what kind of sleeper you are.
Where to find it: Lovesac, Tempur-Pedic at CITYCENTRE
Opposite page: Boost your energy, aid digestion, and begin the day hydrated by drinking water first thing in the morning.

Going Green
Up your juice and smoothie game.
By Kate Hull
Delicious and nutritious—that’s the mantra we are channeling for all of our meals this year. We are leaning into the wholesome, nourishing power of foods and ensuring they are not only packed with nutrients but loaded with good flavor. Gone are the days of self-deprivation. Hello, tasty goodness! Cue the smoothie and juice recommendations.
Juices and smoothies have long been celebrated as a top-notch way to kick start your day with veggies, fruits, and healthy vitamins, while keeping you full until your next meal. And they are! But ensuring they check a few extra boxes can help get the most out of your nutritious drink of choice.
Liz Moody, the host of The Healthier Together podcast, author, and online content creator, says now it’s all about the metabolic benefits—which means maintaining a healthy level of blood sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol, and blood pressure. The days of the all-fruit juice or smoothie that throw your blood sugar out of whack and leave you hungry an hour later are no more.
“There has been a lot of research about how things like sugar impact our blood sugar and overall metabolic health,” she says. “In the days of the all-fruit smoothies, you weren’t having that lovely longer blood sugar curve effect.” Now, she says, this is changing.
Liz looks for the metabolic health trifecta when ordering her go-to drink. For her, this means a smoothie with fat, fiber, and protein. To ensure your smoothie fits the bill, look for an offering with hearty greens in the mix like spinach or kale for micronutrients and fiber. For fat, add in healthy fats like avocado, chia seeds, flax seeds, or your yogurt of choice. “These healthy fats keep you satiated longer,” she says. And to get that protein fix, hemp, protein powder, and even nut butters are a great addition.
When opting for a juice, Liz recommends leaning toward the freshest juice possible that is heavy on the veggies. Once the juice is made, the nutrients are oxidized, and you lose some of that nutrient-packed benefit. And, unlike a smoothie that can have everything your body needs for a balanced meal, a juice isn’t a meal. Make sure and opt for other food pairings with your juice to keep your diet balanced. “I would [drink juice] with an actual meal so I am getting the nutrients as a bonus, not a substitute,” she says.
And while that extra cacao or peanut butter in your smoothie might feel like an indulgence, Liz has another approach worth considering. “I don’t view anything as an indulgence because I don’t think anything is off limits,” she says. “Go for the trifecta, and make sure it is something you are always enjoying,” she says. “Wellness is a tool. The second it isn’t helping you live your happiest life, it’s no longer wellness. If you are suffering through your smoothie, what can you add to make you excited to consume it?”
It’s not always feasible to make your own juice from home. Going to the grocery store takes time, and having to balance the amount of time it takes to meal prep in your schedule with the expiration date of all the ingredients takes extra mind power. Luckily, there are fantastic spots all across the Districts where you can get a tasty, nutritious juice or smoothie fix. Visiting Juicewell , Clean Juice , Life Cafe , and Cranky Carrot are great spots to make sure you’re getting the nutrients you need, while also enjoying a delicious treat.

What does the zodiac have to say about what’s in store for you this year ?
By TM Studio
ARIES
March 21 to April 20
Mercury (the ruler of the lungs, arms, shoulders, small intestine and respiratory system) is your health planet. Word to the wise: Watch your weight until May 17 when Jupiter is in your sign. Aries also benefit from regular Life Spa face and scalp massage, tension-relieving shoulder massage and foot reflexology that alleviates stress caused by anger or fear.
TAURUS
April 21 to May 20
Your sign rules the neck and throat, which is why it’s important to schedule regular neck massage or craniosacral therapy at Galleria Spa Salon Boutique at Century Square to relieve tension in those areas. Find ways to relieve stress and anxiety (meditation can help) from June 5 to October 9 and watch what you eat (healthy choices when possible).
LEO
July 21 to August 21
Leos love to have fun, but burning the candle at both ends can take its toll. The good news is that Saturn, your health planet, changes signs this year, vastly improving your health and energy. To improve heart health (your sign rules the heart), find ways to alleviate stress and anxiety. Cultivate a positive attitude and make regular foot massage a part of your routine. Try Isle Pedi Spa or Anthony Vince Spa to keep you feeling your best.
VIRGO
August 22 to September 22
Pluto has been in your 5th house for the past two decades, but as it moves into your 6th house from March 24 to June 12, expect major changes in your health regime. Yoga or Pilates can keep your spine in alignment, while any faith-based practice can keep anxiety at bay for worry-prone Virgos.
SAGITTARIUS
November 23 to December 20
The Archer’s planet of health and work is Venus, and your scents are carnation, jasmine and myrrh. Try aromatherapy options at Sephora or Life Spa . Your idea of perfect harmony is organization, and your greatest virtues are honesty and generosity. Focus on your health from May 17 on, paying attention to emotions that cause stress. Regular massage relieves tension that tends to collect in your neck and throat.
CAPRICORN
December 21 to January 19
With Pluto in your sign for most of 2023, your health should remain fairly stable and periods of stress should pass quickly. Practicing Yoga or Pilates is recommended as is regular massage of arms and shoulders. Take-charge Capricorns may also sense that change is in the air from the way they dress to the way they see themselves. Embrace it by browsing the selection at Free People movement clothes.
GEMINI
May 21 to June 20
Pluto is your health planet, and while you’re feeling relatively well this year, it’s always a good idea to take precautions. From March 24 to June 12, make sure to support your ankles when exercising. Geminis also benefit from regular neck and shoulder massage, back and knee massage and foot reflexology that targets sore spots. The Hack at Memorial Green can get you back on your feet.
CANCER
June 21 to July 20
Cancers are all about feelings so the key to finding balance is to keep a handle on your moods. LifeStance at Memorial Green can offer comprehensive mental health to keep you from falling prey to negative thought patterns and try not to be over-sensitive when engaging with others. Jupiter is your ruling planet in health and work, and from May 17 when it moves into Taurus, relieving tension in the neck and shoulders is recommended.
LIBRA
September 23 to October 23
For Libras, self-reliance and independence are crucial to finding balance. From March 8 on, pay attention to the spine, knees, teeth and bones. Kaviana Dentistry at Memorial Green offers general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry, all ways to connect your mental and physical well being. Cultivating a spiritual practice can help you achieve a mind/body/ spirit connection crucial to physical and emotional wellbeing, while scents like almond, violet and rose are soothing.
SCORPIO
October 23 to November 22
There’s a lot you can do to improve your overall health this year, especially if you concentrate on vulnerable areas. Mars, your health planet, rules the muscles so make regular exercise a part of your daily routine. Meditation can also relieve stress that taxes the adrenals. If you’re paying attention, your body will tell you what it needs.
AQUARIUS
January 20 to February 18
The Water-Bearer, known for its intellect and tendency to challenge power on a daily basis, has two longterm stressful planets in alliance with their sign in 2023. Pay attention to your health after May 17 (a faithbased practice or meditation can help relieve anxiety). Choose foods that nourish, and take your time to savor the experience.
PISCES
February 19 to March 20
As Saturn moves from Aquarius into Pisces starting on March 8, you could find yourself pushed to the limit. Slow down and take time off when you need it. Rest and relaxation are equally important to Pisces during this transition, and since your sign is ruled by the feet, regular foot massage can restore flagging energy. The good news? The stars are aligned in your favor if getting into shape is on your agenda.
