Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival Tour (formerly known as Radical Reels) Different films than the November Banff Film Festival

U of M, Willey Hall Auditorium

Saturday, April 28, 2018

7:30 pm

The Banff Mountain Film Festival (held annually in Banff, Alberta Canada from late October into early November) accepts over three hundred mountain films into its competitioin, the top fifty or so are screened throughout the festival. Every year the films feature a range of styles and themes, including climbing, skiing, kayaking, biking, adventure, culture and the environment. So many action films were being submitted to the film festival that they could not fit into the regular screenings, resulting in the creation (in 2004) of the hugely successful evening presentation, formerly known as Radical Reels.

Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival Tour trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1S1No9JL4k The Film Tour travels each Spring – specifically featuring the dynamic, high-adrenaline films from the festival and complements the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour that travels in November. The focus is on sports such as skiing, climbing, kayaking, BASE jumping, snowboarding and mountain biking. Now you don't have to journey to Banff each fall to see these exciting films! Radical Reels Tour contains high-adrenaline short films from all outdoor sports.

Canoe, Kayak, and SUP Auction

Why Sell Your Canoe, Kayak, or SUP at this Auction? There is not a better place in the USA to sell a used canoe or kayak than this auction. Located right in the heart of paddling country in Minneapolis, nearly a thousand buyers attend this auction looking to purchase a boat!

We expect over 200 boats!

Saturday, April 28th, 11am on the grass across the street from Midwest Mountaineering Big-Top tents

RAIN or SHINE!

As a seller, you have an option to set a minimum selling price for your boat. If you choose to do this, you will be charged a $20 fee when you drop your boat off. If your boat sells, the $20 fee will be refunded and your only charge will be a 15% commission. Past auction results show that over 90% of all boats meet or exceed any minimum prices established. You will also be able to receive payment for your boat shortly after the buyer makes payment at the auction. Ok, so you have decided to sell your boat at the auction. Here is a great, quick tip that will help your boat bring top dollar: tape a note on the boat describing where you used it, how long you have owned it, how it performed or tips for the new buyer. Put the note in a plastic sheet protector if it is raining. Still have questions? Please feel free to call auctioneer Tony Elfelt of AAA Auction at 763-421-3044. He will answer any additional questions you may have.

How to Buy a Canoe, Kayak, or SUP at this Auction?

World’s Largest Canoe, Kayak, and SUP Auction! Sell your canoe, kayak, or SUP at the

Seller sets minimum selling price. No fees if not sold!

To

Sell

Your Canoe, Kayak, or SUP.... Bring canoes, kayaks, and SUP’s between 7:00 and 10:00 am to the Outdoor Adventure Expo tent entrance on 3rd Street. Auction Staff will be on hand to help unload your canoes, kayaks, or SUP’s.

Buy

To a Canoe, Kayak, or SUP... Inspection at 10:00 am Auction at 11:00 am (Rain or Shine) All buyers will need a bidding number. Bidding numbers are free.

Terms: Sellers: If sellers choose to set a minimum selling price (a reserve), they will be charged a $20 reserve fee when the boat is dropped off. If the boat sells, that $20 fee shall be reimbursed to the seller. A 15% commission will be charged if the item sells. Sellers will be paid by check on the day of the auction shortly after the purchaser pays for the boat.

Buying a boat at the auction is easy. All you need to do is show your photo ID to the auction staff and you will receive a bidding number and a tip sheet explaining how the auction works. Bidding numbers are free. The auction starts at 11:00a.m. and the preview hour is from 10:00 – 11:00a.m. We recommend that you arrive by 10:00a.m. so you will have enough time to preview all the boats. Buyers can pay with a Minnesota check, cash or credit card. Still have questions? Please feel free to call auctioneer Tony Elfelt of AAA Auction at 763-421-3044. He will answer any additional questions you may have. If you need help determinining what type of boat is best for your needs, bring an experienced friend, or do your homework early. Look for generalities, not necessarily specifics. A great Brand X boat might show up. It could be the perfect boat for you! You will need to know if its hull design fits your paddling style. Consult the current manufacturer’s websites or catalogs. A good one is Wenonahcanoe.com. Click on Resources under Wenonah Canoes and Current Designs Kayaks. They offer generic hull design discussions. Sorry, the Midwest Mountaineering staff, are not available during the auction. We are in the tents selling the new boats and new accessories!

Buyers: Get your free bidding number at the auction. Simply show auction staff a driver's license or proper identification. Buyers shall pay a 10% buyers premium (13% for credit card payment) for all purchases. For example, if buyer purchases a canoe for $500 an additional $50 shall be added to the purchase price. Sales tax also applies. All boats must be picked up by 2:30p.m. after the auction. Boats are the responsibility of the owner during the auction, and of the new owner as soon as the auctioneer says “Sold!”. Don't forget to bring tie-down equipment to transport your purchase, or buy a rack on sale! Additional terms: Cash, Minnesota check or Visa / Mastercard / Discover / American Express accepted. AAA Auction and Midwest Mountaineering are not responsible for accidents. No property shall be removed from premises until paid for. Any statement made by the auctioneer on the date of the auction takes precedence over printed matter. Auctioneers have the sole discretion of selling auxiliary components as a unit or separate, and reserve the right to forbid or remove any and all persons from participating in the auction. All boats are sold "As Is." Contact Tony Elfelt of AAA Auction ID #2710089 at 763-421-3044 if you have further questions.

Midwest Mountaineering will donate 10% of its auction profits to help rebuild the closed Superior Hiking Trail Split Rock River bridge. www.OutdoorAdventureExpo.com

25% off all Helium Jackets during the EXPO!

We donate 10% of our pre-tax profits to outdoor groups with environmental or wilderness preservation goals. This past summer, you our customers, voted where we should donate our money. The lucky winner was the Superior Hiking Trail Association. They used a $3,300 grant to help restore the trail north of Grand Marais where flooding had caused bridge washouts. “Linking people with nature,” their motto, is one we can all stand behind. Thank you for voting! The “Green Line” light-rail connects downtown St. Paul with downtown Minneapolis. The U of M West Bank stop is just 1/2 block from our front door. The “Blue Line” Cedar Riverside stop is just 3 blocks from our door. The environment wins when you ride the rails. Try it. It’s fun! The solar panels on our roof continue to supplement our energy use. We have switched to all LED bulbs.. We are a Clean Energy Partner with Arcadia Power. Many building improvements have earned us an “Energy Star Certification.” Our product selection features gear and clothing made by some of the most energy efficiency minded companies in the world. Merino wool and more down than ever are examples of products that are and always have been great green choices. Our free coffee which we offer evey day to customers is fair trade and organically grown. We have a Venturing Crew for boys and girls 14-20 years old. It’s primary focus is climbing. For more information, look for them at the popcorn booth or Saturday morning boat auction hotdog booth at the Expo.

St. Croix & Namekagon Rivers — The Enduring Gift

Craig Blacklock will show photographs from, and talk about his adventures in creating his newest book, which celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. To capture these images, Craig kayaked every mile of both the Namekagon and St. Croix Rivers, gathering images from the water and along the shoreline. He then returned to photograph with a drone mounted camera, bringing us views of the watershed never before seen. Seen together, Blacklock’s photographs mimic the experience of kayaking and camping along the rivers. The book is cinematic in its approach, with grand, double page spreads of vast riverscapes, and dozens of details of flowers, ferns and wildlife.

Mondale, who as a senator, co-sponsored the Act. Blacklock’s photographs are included in many collections, including the Tweed Museum of Art and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Rediscover North America Expedition

How do you even begin to think about canoeing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean? Well, this massive canoe trip had its origins on the Hudson Bay in 2012, when Winchell Delano and three others finished a 2600-mile canoe expedition across Canada’s Northern Territories. At that moment, the feeling of accomplishment seemed outweighed by something else. He wasn’t sure what. Bu by the time that he returned to work in November of 2012, it was pretty clear. The journey wasn't over yet - it was just on hold. Something bigger was brewing. On a flight from Salt Lake City to Minneapolis, Winchell and Adam Trigg started to talk about future canoe trips across Canada. Adam joked aloud: "We could just start in the Gulf and paddle up the Mississippi..." They both laughed, but at the same time, loved the idea because it seemed to perfectly juxtapose nature and culture, the wilds of Canada and the more densely populated United States. The result? Six guys paddled 245 days through twelve states, three provinces and two territories by way of sixteen rivers to cover a total of 5,230 miles across the US and Canada. The best part? The people we met and kindness we were shown. This presentation is the story of those 245 days.

Saturday, April 28 - 3:30 pm U of M Humphrey Center - Cowles Auditorium

Wi n c h e l l De l a n o Winchell Delano is a paddler from Saint Cloud, Minnesota who has paddled over 10,000 miles through remote regions of Canada. In 2012, he was part of the Trans-Territorial Expedition, 2,600 mile canoe journey that lasted over 130 days and crossed Canada west to east, all above the 60th parallel. After the trip, he began planning an even longer trip. The result was the much-publicized 5,200-mile Rediscover North America Expedition which was successfully concluded in September, 2015. He has degrees from Gonzaga University (BA in 2007) and the University of Kansas (MA in 2011), both in Environmental History.

A l o n e a t t h e To p - Climbing Denali in the Dead of Winter

Lo nnie Dupr e Arctic explorer and climber Lonnie Dupre became the first to summit Denali aka Mount McKinley in January 12/18/14 Dupre flew to basecamp. With winter winds regularly exceeding 100 miles per hour, temperatures dropping below -60º F, and just six hours of sunlight each day, January is a formidable time on Denali, whose elevation of 20,320 feet makes it North America’s highest mountain. Dupre reached the summit at 2pm (AKST) on January 11, 2015.

Pedal to DC:

A Book Tour to Save the Boundary Waters

Amy and Dave Freeman Covering 1,750 miles and crossing nine states, authors and National Geographic Adventurers of the Year, Amy and Dave Freeman are biking from Ely, Minnesota to Washington D.C. this spring to promote their new book, A Year in the Wilderness, and continue their efforts to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, one of our country’s most precious and expansive Wilderness areas.

The Freemans traveled roughly 3,000 miles by canoe and ski with sled dogs, visiting about 500 lakes, rivers and streams throughout the year. That's 365 days exploring and documenting the Wilderness with the purpose of keeping America's most visited wilderness area in people's consciousnesses throughout the entire year. They used their adventure as a platform to educate others about the threat posed by Twin Metals and other sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed near the BWCAW. Diverging from the typical expedition approach of traveling from point A to point B, the Freemans entered the wilderness with the intent to bear witness to all the seasons in the biggest wilderness area east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades. They learned to slow down and closely observe what was going on around them– from metamorphosing of dragonflies to the wanderings of a wolf pack. They were out there as ice formed on the lakes and then melted again. They saw the forest awaken and birds return. If you love the Boundary Waters or wild places in general, if you're curious about the latest developments in the fight to protect the BWCAW watershed from copper mining, what the Freemans witnessed, how their relationship fared, lessons they learned, or practical tips for doing an expedition of your own, this presentation and short film are a must-see. With collaborative support from the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters and Milkweed Editions, the Freemans will take their story, as told in their recent book A Year in the Wilderness (Milkweed Editions) to new audiences as they pedal to the nation’s capital. The Freemans will tow a canoe behind their bikes, which will serve as a reminder of the wilderness they have pledged to protect. The canoe is also a petition for citizens to sign to show support for protecting the Boundary Waters from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining.

Amy and Dave Freeman are the authors of A Year in the Wilderness, a project chronicling their yearlong adventure in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to protect the Boundary Waters from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining. The Freemans’ expeditions have taken them over thirty thousand miles by canoe, kayak, and dogsled through some of the world’s wildest places, from the Amazon to the Arctic. National Geographic named them Adventurers of the Year in 2014 and their images, videos, and articles been published by a wide range of media sources from the CBC, NBC, and FOX to the Chicago Tribune, National Geographic, Outside, Backpacker, Canoe and Kayak, and Minnesota Public Radio. They also run the Wilderness Classroom, an educational nonprofit organization that introduces children to wild places and unique cultures.

Camping Top Secrets with Cliff Jacobson

If you’ve ever been to the Boundary Waters and competed for campsites on a popular lake, fussed with fire on a rainy day, slept in a wet tent or been bugged by bugs, bears or rodents, this fast-paced session is for you.

This whirlwind seminar focuses on camping tricks that only the experts know—practical things you won’t find in ordinary camping books or videos.

You’ll learn how to get away from the crowd, choose essential gear, and stay dry when it rains all day. We’ll check out equipment that works, and that which doesn’t. Included is a brief description of the UTM (Universal Trans Mercator) system of navigation, and Boundary Waters Canoe Area maps that utilize this system. Also, recommendations for tripping with teenagers. Based on Cliff’s book, Boundary Waters Canoe Camping, 3rd Edition.

Learn how to stormproof your tent, inexpensively waterproof your sleeping bag; sleep comfortably on a bad site; make a one match fire in the rain; stay dry in an all day rain; purify silty river water; waterproof and pack your gear so it will stay dry in rain or a capsize. Based on Cliff’s book, Camping’s Top Secrets, 25th Anniversary Edition.

240 miles through Moab:

The extremes of an ultra-marathon

There are experiences that define one’s life and stand out boldly against the mundane and tedious repetition of daily existence. At age 67, Michael Koppy found such an experience on an amazing 238-mile ultra marathon through the desert of southern Utah: The Moab 240. Both a spiritual journey and an adventure of a lifetime, Michael will share his moment by moment experiences during his 82-hour run that took him through the rock-laden desert trails, to high-altitude vistas and back, all while wearing a twenty pound pack. You’ll get a first-hand account of what it’s like to be sleep deprived yet somehow muster the will and energy to keep moving. Learn what it means to get a “reset” and how techniques in mindfulness can improve your running, or really, anything you do. With over 150 photos taken during the run, Michael will bring you on an unforgettable journey through 238 miles, a distance that is increasingly being called the new “100”.

Michael Koppy Michael Koppy started running seriously between his junior and senior years in high school, logging 1000 miles that summer, or 13 miles per day. Since then, he’s ran about twenty marathons with a PR of 2:49. Koppy finished the Minnesota Border to Border twice, setting a course record the second time. He has set course records in the MN Border to Border race and age group course records at 50 mile and 100k distances while avoiding overuse injuries. In 2017, at age 67, he finished 22nd out of 144 starters in the Moab 240, a 238 mile race.

Steve Schreader Steve Schreader, our canoe roundtable moderator is a Minnesotan whose passion and enthusiasm for the outdoors was fostered over hundreds of trips in Minnesota’s famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. When he’s not paddling he loves to ski, climb, and backpack. Steve is currently a manager at Midwest Mountaineering.

Expedition Canoeing Roundtable Discussion Panel Peter Marshall, Cliff Jacobson, Kevin Callan, Bob O'Hara, and Steve Schreader For all you paddlers who have spent the winter hunched over maps and guidebooks, itching to turn your dreams into adventures, this roundtable discussion is for you! For the second year in a row, we’ve brought together a panel of four of the most well-known wilderness canoeists to help answers your questions. The panel includes two of the most respected authors on canoe craft, Kevin Callan and Cliff Jacobson, as well as Bob O’Hara, who has been traveling to remote waterways in the Arctic for almost fifty years, and Peter Marshall, who has undertaken some of the longest and boldest expeditions in the north. All four have earned their knowledge from a lifetime of experience, and, of course, mistakes.

Peter Marshall Peter Marshall has been on two expeditions that have lasted over 120 days. In 2012 he was part of a four man crew that paddled 2,600 miles from Alaska to the Hudson Bay, which won the Canoe & Kayak Magazine's 2013 Expedition of the Year Award.

That doesn’t mean they’ll agree with one another. Luckily, Midwest Mountaineering’s Steve Schreader will be there to moderate this somewhat opinionated group of paddlers.Come with your questions, or better yet, email your questions ahead of time to sschreader@midwestmtn.com. Expect a wealth of wisdom (maybe even humor) vital for your next canoe adventure.

Birding in Honduras Wilmer Fernandez This presentation will showcase various opportunities for birding and adventure travel in Honduras, as well as local conservation efforts to preserve habitats in the country. Honduras offers several habitat types, from rainforest, pine-oak forest, mangrove, sandy beaches to cloud forests. That diversity in ecosystems explains the huge variety of birds; nearly 800 species have been observed in the country. Honduras is just a short flight from the US. Good infrastructure, ecotourism lodges, a new field guide, and local guides make it a good place to get introduced to tropical birding.

Kokopelli

What’s New?

Jackson Coosa FD - Pedal drive systems are all the rage for kayak anglers looking to keep their hands free for casting, or boaters who like to occasionally use their hands for activities like photography and birdwatching. After years of developing and perfecting, the Jackson Coosa FD (Flex Drive) is finally here.

Wilderness Systems Tsunami - The newly redesigned Tsunami maintains the sleek, modern deck lines of its predecessor, while features have been added to improve the paddler’s experience. Two removable mesh deck bags make for convenient storage pockets, while an under the deck storage area provides another alternative for staging your favorite beverage or snack. A longer waterline enhances speed and efficiency.

Kokopelli Packrafts - Adventurers are taking Kokopelli rafts on backpacking trips, or strapping a Kokopelli raft to their bikes (or strapping their bikes to their Kokopelli rafts) , and exploring the outdoors in a whole new way! You can even store a packraft in the trunk of your vehicle in the event that you come across that perfect body of water that’s just begging to be paddled.

Grey Duck Paddleboards - Grey Duck is a Minnesota company focused on bringing quality Paddleboards to outdoor enthusiasts. Rob Bossen, owner and operator of Grey Duck, lives right here in Minneapolis, and his composite boards provide efficient, easy to paddle hulls with eye-catching designs. We’re happy to have this local brand represented at Midwest Mountaineering!
