Midwest Mountaineering is pleased to host the legendary Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an international competition featuring the world’s best films and videos on mountain subjects.

Each year, a pre-screening committee selects 30 to 40 finalists. An international jury then determines the best films and awards prizes in eight categories: Grand Prize, Climbing, Mountain Sports, Mountain Environment, Mountain Culture, Short Mountain Film and Feature-Length Mountain Fiction. Audience members decide the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

Topics will include the variety of tasks, the training and resources provided to the volunteers, and the experiences of a volunteer.

Mike Bastyr has 28 years of Boundary Waters experience and was a volunteer Wilderness Ranger this summer. Cathy Quinn is the Recreation and Wilderness Specialist for the East Zone of the Superior National Forest. She previously served as a Wilderness Ranger for more than 20 years in the BWCAW. They allow you to go just about anywhere and can be used in less than ideal snow conditions. Come to learn more about this fantastic way to explore the outdoors in winter.

Matthew Davis lives in Detroit Lakes, MN where he works as the MN & ND Regional Trail Coordinator for the non-profit North Country Trail Association. He is an avid hiker, skishoer, mountain biker, and also a long-time trail volunteer.

Paddle for Progress Waterway Jay Gustafson

Learn how to capture beautiful landscape photos whether you use a mobile phone or a DSLR as your camera! In this presentation, Sarah will give some tips and techniques for shooting landscape and nature photographs that you can put to use on your next trip or even your own backyard.

Yosemite has over 750 miles of trails which make for some great backpacking.

Some areas are better than most. This presentation is focused on showing you the different areas of the park, and what you need to know for a successful hike.

Permits, food storage and the use of public transportation will be some of the subjects discussed.

Join Waterway Jay as he recaps the 2018 season of Paddle for Progress, a 2 year 4,300mi journey to raise awareness of the water quality crisis in Minnesota. Jay has solo canoed 30 of the 34 state water trails mapped by the Minnesota DNR and will discuss how his project began, what he has learned about our rivers, and the current state of water in Minnesota. Jay will share stories, photos, and ideas for how individuals and groups can become involved with the needed solutions to protect and preserve our water.

Sarah Ehlen owns and operates Glacier Photo Guides, which specializes in teaching landscape photography for all skill levels in Montana’s beautiful Glacier National Park.

Jay Gustafson is a former IT Business Analyst with a passion for water in Minnesota. In 2016, Jay paddled the Mississippi River from source to sea and discovered the irresistible call of the river.

In June 2017, Gustafson quit his job of 10 years to begin, Paddle for Progress. After canoeing full time through October, 2018, Jay took a job with Northstar Canoes. Jay is very excited to turn his passion for water quality and canoeing into a full time career in paddle sports.

The Southwest region of the United States is one of Rod and Sharon’s favorite getaways! This presentation will recommend hikes in the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Valley of Fire, Sedona, The Wave and Red Rocks.

Rod and Sharon took their own advice and did a quick getaway to the SW. Not only was it easy, fun and relaxing, buy they took several new photos to add to their presentation. They will talk about trails, what to take, permits and where to stay. The recommended hikes are also spectacular throughout the year.

John Muir Trail Kim Fishburn The John Muir Trail is one of the premier trails in the world, covering 211 miles of some of the finest mountain scenery in the US, starting in Yosemite Valley, and ending on top of Mt Whitney.

This remote region at the end of the Andes is home to Cape Horn, Tierra del Fuego and the expansive Torres del Paine National Park - and includes the iconic Monte Fitz Roy, the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier, and more.

View jaw-dropping images of the region’s incredible natural beauty from a variety of both active Patagonia expeditions and luxury Patagonia vacations, and will also offer practical advice on traveling through this area of rugged wilderness and cultural intrigue.

Self Supported Foot Crossing of the Red Lake Peatland Jason Husveth Join Jason Husveth on a never before attempted summer crossing and exploration of the Red Lake Peatland, the largest patterned peatland system in the Lower 48.

Besides showing some great pictures from the trail we'll talk about obtaining permits, how and where to do food drops, food storage along the trail, and transportation options getting to and from the trail.

Jason will present slides, ground and drone video, and tales of his team's selfsupported 43 mile foot crossing of one of Minnesota's last tru wilderness areas over two days in August of 2017. Peatland ecology, plant communities, botany and rare species will be presented. Gear, strategies, failures, and lessons learned will be discussed.

Jason Husveth is a professional restoration ecologist, botanist and veteran endurance athlete with a fascination for Minnesota's vast wetlands and unexplored wilderness areas.

Hiking and Via Ferrata in Dolomites Rod & Sharon Johnson National Geographic Adventure Magazine lists hiking and climbing the Via Ferrata in the Italian Dolomites as one of the world’s top adventure travel destinations. Hiking in the Italian Alps is “civilized hiking” - you don’t have to carry a tent, sleeping bag, stove or food.

You can enjoy great food and wine on a scenic terrace after a long day of hiking.

Kimimanjaro is called “Every Man’s Everest”; Rod calls the Via Ferrata (Iron Way) “”Every Man’s El Capitan!”

Via Ferrata consists of steel cables and ladders that you clip into to ascend or traverse the rock face. Rod and Sharon will share photos from their trip - hiking, huthopping and climbing Via Ferrata in the Dolomites.

They will hand out resources on how you can create your own Dolomite adventure!

Thru-Hiking the Great Plains Trail Luke “Strider” Jordan This is a story of adventure and discovery on the first-ever thru-hike of this newly established resource. Stretching for 2200 miles across rolling grasslands, through rocky canyons and over forested ridges, the Great Plains Trail aims to be America’s next great adventure. Follow along as Strider traverses this trail from the desert of west Texas to the Canadian Border, in an attempt to raise awareness and generate support ofthis great resource, highlighting the greatest history and scenery of the Great Plains.

Luke Jordan grew up on a farm in central Minnesota on the outskirts of the Minneapolis suburbs. During his college years he started getting into backpacking and volunteered on trail construction crews for the Superior Hiking Trail. In 2012 he graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in Natural Resources, and immediately after attempted a thru hike of the North Country National Scenic Trail. He succeeded, and became the 4th person to successfully thru-hike that trail.

Kilimanjaro Innocent Lyimo Accessible to beginning trekker/climbers, Kilimanjaro is a must, taking you through the mists of equatorial jungle to reach the snows and breath-taking views from the summit.

Our ascent of Kilimanjaro can be considered a trek since the terrain, while steep at times, is covered in trail all the way to the summit. Participants can leave their ice axe and crampons at home; the only ice you will see is the bizarre ice cap that rises abruptly out of the moonscape surrounding the Crater Camp.

From the necessary equipment to physical preparations, Innocent will offer firsthand experiences and expert advice to assist you in planning a successful climb to the "Roof of Africa".

Born and raised on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, Innocent first climbed to the summit of Kilimanjaro at the age of 15. Innocent now has over fifteen years of experience both as mountain and safari guide in Tanzania.

Innocent is the founder of Destination Tanzania Safaris (detasa.com), a company based in Tanzania with an office in Minnesota. He oversees all the operations and marketing for DETASA in the USA and at the same time continues to guide groups on Kilimanjaro and safari in Tanzania.

Alongside his work, Innocent enjoys many other outdoor activities and has a dream of climbing all seven summits in the future. He and his wife Karen have two young daughters and live in southern Minnesota.

Restoration and Hiking the Powwow Trail in the BWCA Rod Markin In 2011, the BWCA Wilderness’ 30+ mile Pow Wow Trail was utterly destroyed by the Pagami Creek fire. Campsites were obliterated; the trail’s tread burned beyond finding. Since the fire, avid volunteers have been unrelenting in their tireless efforts to re-establish this historic and scenic trail. Rod will share a photolog of before and after the fire, along with the efforts and successes of re-establishing the trail, as well as hiking this historic trail.

Rod is a lifelong hiker/backpacker, with treks in New Zealand, Chile, South Korea, and Wrangell Mountains (AK), as well as many mountain states and the BWCA. He is a volunteer and past president of the Boundary Waters Advisory Committee – a grassroots, volunteer organization that advocates for and clears hiking trails in the BWCA Wilderness.

T The PolyMet/Glencore mine is the first sulfide mine ever proposed in Minnesota, and it would serve as the snowplow behind which any other dangerous mines would follow. PolyMet has obtained state and federal permits, but WaterLegacy and other groups are fighting back. Dave Pagel and Rick Kollath began climbing together as college students in the 1970s in Duluth.

Together, they dreamed of conquering the Eiger’s North Face, Switzerland’s infamous “Wall of Death”. They trained for the climb at home and abroad, even visiting the Eiger for several aborted attempts. This is a story of climbing obsession, a lifelong friendship, some unique motivation, and two climbs of the Eiger, made 26 years apart.

Soloing the John Muir Trail Michelle Schroeder

In August and September of 2018 two gents from Minnesota embarked on a three-stage trip dubbed ‘The Ode to MN,’ a tribute to the natural splendor of Minnesota.

Backpacker Magazine named the John Muir Trail the Best Trail in the World in 2010. It is a 221-mile trail from Yosemite Valley to Whitney Portal. Michelle will discuss her September 2018 solo trip and share stunning photos. She will share information on how to prepare for the JMT, the extensive logistics from travel to mailing resupplies, food storage, when to go, permits, and more.

Using gear made in Minnesota, the trip began with a bike tour from St. Paul to International Falls, MN. From here the two canoed the Voyageurs’ Highway through Voyageurs National Park and the BWCAW to Grand Portage State Park, MN. Upon arriving at Lake Superior, they traded their paddles for backpacks and headed south to Duluth, MN via the Superior Hiking Trail. The final stretch saw them return to their bikes, cycling back to St. Paul, MN. Join Steve as he shares about their trip, their focus, their ups and downs, and what it’s like to create an expedition right out of their own backyard.

This is a celebration of wilderness, innovation and adventure in our great state.

Midwest Mountaineering manager Steve Schreader grew up in the Twin Cities metro area and has been an avid outdoors enthusiast since he was five. In addition to his love for all things Minnesotan, he has recently entered the world of mountaineering. Having summitted Mt. Rainier in 2018, he has his sights set on an attempt on Denali.

As backcountry skiing explodes in popularity across the country and the world, Superior Highland Backcountry, a recently formed group that advocates to expand and protect BC skiing opportunities in Northeastern MN, has just submitted a special use permit to the Superior National Forest for the Midwest's first designated public backcountry skiing area, the Moose Mountain Glades Project.

It is the first step and cornerstone in fulfilling a vision of a hut to hut trail system along the North Shore, complete with downhill glades, connecting trails and overnight huts. Rory will present this vision, share what the Superior Highlands has to offer the skiing public and his experiences skiing much of the vertical of the Shore.

Citizen-Diplomacy Adventure on the Russia-America Frontier Paul Shurke Arctic adventurer Paul Schurke is best known for having retraced (with Will Steger in 1986) Robert Peary’s 1909 dogsled expedition to the North Pole. In addition, Paul retraced Ernest Shackleton’s traverse of South Georgia Island on the 1914 “Endurance” expedition to Antarctica, took his dogs through Svalbald, Greenland, and of course, northern Mn. When not adventuring in the polar regions, Paul operates Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge in Ely, Minnesota. He is an author and outdoor educator who received the “Explorer Award” from the International Center for Exploration, the “Adventurer of the Year” from Outside Magazine and the "Environmental Hero" award from the Wilderness Society.

Hugh Smith is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, a photography instructor, and published photographer.

He is a world traveler and has been to all seven continents and nearly 100 countries. While not photographing or traveling, Hugh works as an Anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

The World's Best Crag: Climbing in the South of France Sevve Stember Lavender fields stretch as far as the eye can see. This is where Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Matisee, and other Impressionist painters chose to spend their creative life. It also, happens to be home to some of the best limestone sport climbing in the world. Ceuse has been touted as "the Best Crag in the world".

Whether or not you agree, the point is that it is absolutely phenomenal climbing in a picturesque setting.

In this talk, you'll also learn about the climbing in the impressive Verdon River Gorge. Information covers: detailed overviews of climbing, lodging/camping, food beta, etc. for Ceuse and the Verdon River Gorge.

When not adventuring in the polar regions, Paul operates Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge in Ely, Minnesota. He is an author and outdoor educator who received the “Explorer Award” from the International Center for Exploration, the “Adventurer of the Year” from Outside Magazine and the "Environmental Hero" award from the Wilderness Society.

Sevve Stember is a mountain athlete that hails from northern Minnesota. He's practically Canadian. As a boy, he has fond memories of nordic skiing with his father in subzero temps, hiking in the Canadian rockies, and climbing trees on his parents acreage. Depending on the season, you can find him skiing, trail running, or climbing.

Join Namaste Treks & Expeditions guide Steve Tickle as he discusses and shows photos from all aspects of the Khumbu (Everest) region and the choices you have in making your way to Mount Everest Base Camp.

There are four distinct valleys that wander through the Khumbu region of Nepal.

With each offering its own special and unique qualities and views different from the others. From the gold standard route up the Khumbu Valley to the high passes of the Thame and Gokyo valleys, there is a route for all abilities. Trekking, climbing and guiding in Nepal for the past 15 years has made Steve one of the most respected guides in the Nepalese Sherpa community.

In January 2019 Ben Weaver and Jay Petervary rode the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon on fat bikes.

A poet and songwriter Ben Weaver travels by bike using his tools to unify communities through performance and conversations on the land. Jay Petervary is an accomplished ultra endurance race veteran and remarkably innovative cyclist. This unique trip sought to use poetry on the trail at -40 below to forge relationships between the dog mushing and winter cycling communities.
