Green

Initiatves from Midwest Mountaineer ing Midwest Mountaineering continues to be a green friend to the outdoor community.

We donate 10% of our pre-tax profits to outdoor groups with environmental or wilderness preservation goals. This year we gave our grant to the Free Forest School, gear to help connect kids and the outdoors. The “Green Line” light-rail connects downtown St. Paul with downtown Minneapolis. The U of M West Bank stop is just 1/2 block from our front door. The “Blue Line” Cedar Riverside stop is just 3 blocks from our door. The environment wins when you ride the rails. Try it. It’s fun! The solar panels on our roof continue to supplement our energy use. We have switched to all LED bulbs.. We are a Clean Energy Partner with Arcadia Power. Many building improvements have earned us an “Energy Star Certification.” Our product selection features gear and clothing made by some of the most energy efficiency minded companies in the world. Merino wool and more sustainably-sourced down than ever are examples of products that are and always have been great green choices. Our free coffee which we offer evey day to customers is fair trade and organically grown. We have a Venturing Crew for boys and girls 14-20 years old. Its primary focus is climbing. Look for them at the popcorn or Saturday morning hotdog booth at the Expo. We subsidize employees who use public transportation and we pay employees to ride their bikes!

A l o n e a t t h e To p - Climbing Denali in the Dead of Winter

Lonnie Dupre

Arctic explorer and climber Lonnie Dupre became the first to summit Denali (aka Mount McKinley) in January. It’s known as the most difficult peak in North America. 12/18/14 Dupre flew to basecamp. With winter winds regularly exceeding 100-miles per hour, temperatures dropping below -60º F, and just six hours of sunlight each day, January is a formidable time on Denali, whose elevation of 20,320 feet makes it North America’s highest mountain. Dupre reached the summit at 2pm (AKST) on January 11, 2015. Only nine expeditions, totaling 16 people, have ever reached the Denali summit in winter, and six deaths occurred during those climbs. Of these previous winter expeditions, four were solo, but none was in January, the darkest and coldest time of the year on the mountain.

Lonnie has 25 years of polar expeditions under his belt, most recently the first successful solo summit of Denali in January 2015, #3 in Outside Magazine’s 2015’s Most Badass Adventures.

Accomplishments: + Completed the first west to east, 3,000 mile winter crossing of Canada’s famed Northwest Passage by dog team + Achieved the first circumnavigation of Greenland, a 6,500 mile, non-motorized journey by kayak and dog team

+ Pulled sleds on skis from Canada to the North Pole twice achieving over 68 million impressions worldwide on issues surrounding climate change

+ Accomplished the first solo winter ascent of Alaska’s Mount Denali (20,340ft.) in January

+ Alpine Ascent of Kyajo Ri (20,295 feet) in Nepal

Saturday, November 17, 1pm UofM Hanson Hall, Room 108

Lonnie will give a multi-media presentation on his winter solo Denali climb. Immediately following the presentation Lonnie will be signing his new book. Alone at the Top Climbing Denali in the Dead of Winter published by Minnesota Historical Society Press.

A 12,000 km bike ride from Cairo to Cape

Tom Lais Tom Lais is a bike advocate who has traveled five of the seven continents by bicycle.

The first thing people seem to ask about when they hear about a bicycle tour across Africa, from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa is: “Was it safe?” The very idea for this 12,000+ kilometer trans-African bike ride took Tom Lais so far outside of his comfort zone that he was compelled to take on the challenge. Part of what motivated Tim was his total lack of knowledge about Africa, and the fact that he was somewhat frightened by the undertaking.

Saturday, November 17, 11:45am U of M Hanson Hall, Room 108

Our Mission: Build the best product. Cause no unnecessary harm. Use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.

But cycling hasn’t exactly been a lifelong passion. Starting his cycling career in earnest at age 50, his cycling career changed in 2015 when he took his first serious bike tour from Anchorage to Mexico City. This great, challenging trip, however, wasn’t quite long enough. So he took on a more challenging ride from Cairo to Cape town in 2017. Needless to say, he’s learned a lot about himself — and the world — by seeing it “at the speed of bike”. At Age 65 he has not slowed down, and is planning to explore Lapland in 2018 and South America in 2020.

In August and September of 2018 two gents from Minnesota embarked on a three-stage trip dubbed ‘The Ode to MN,’ a tribute to the natural splendor of Minnesota. Using gear made in Minnesota, the trip began with a bike tour from St. Paul to International Falls, MN. From here the two canoed the Voyageurs’ Highway through Voyageurs National Park and the BWCAW to Grand Portage State Park, MN. Upon arriving at Lake Superior, they traded their paddles for backpacks and headed south to Duluth, MN via the Superior Hiking Trail. The final stretch saw them return to their bikes, cycling back to St. Paul, MN. Join Steve and Eli as they speak about their trip, their focus, their ups and downs, and what it’s like to create an expedition right out of their own backyard. He has a particular affinity for the outdoors: His award-winning book “State of Wonders” brought a keen eye to the abundance and diversity of Minnesota’s natural beauty.

Freelance writer Melanie Radzicki McManus and Star Tribune photojournalist Brian Peterson set out in early June 2018 to take on the Superior Hiking Trail, thru-hiking south to north and its terminus on the Canadian border. Over a six part series, McManus and Peterson reported back on the adventure in words and visuals, and also relevant topics: from the efforts to protect the resource to the people they encountered, to nature’s mysterious hold on us. McManus, Peterson and Bob Timmons, a Star Tribune outdoors editor, will talk about the planning and execution of the adventure series Feeling Superior, and share tales from the trail.

Pete Marshall from Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness will take you back to some of the earlier battles over dams, logging, flights, motors, and mining and explore how one of our nation’s most beautiful pieces of land is also the most controversial. Pete Marshall is the communications director for Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, as well as the program manager for Midwest Mountaineering. In his younger days he paddled over 8000 miles through remote regions of Canada.

Ice Climbing World Cup – Competition and Culture - Kendra Stritch Ice Climbing World Cups are unique and gymnastic climbing competitions that take place on large, overhanging outdoor structures of ice, plywood, and plastic. Gold medalist Kendra Stritch will share travel and competition stories from 7 years of travelling to China, Korea, Switzerland, Italy, France, the USA, Romania, and Bulgaria. Each competition structure and local culture provide unique challenges for the world cup family of athletes as they literally fly around the world. Kendra is the first American to win a UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup, which has taken her around the world with a community of international athletes exploring cultures and climbing areas.

As backcountry skiing explodes in popularity across the country and the world, Superior Highland Backcountry, a recently formed group that advocates to expand and protect BC skiing opportunities in Northeastern MN, has just submitted a special use permit to the Superior National Forest for the Midwest's first designated public backcountry skiing area, the Moose Mountain Glades Project. It is the first step and cornerstone in fulfilling a vision of a hut to hut trail system along the North Shore, complete with downhill glades, connecting trails and overnight huts. Rory will present this vision, share what the Superior Highlands has to offer the skiing public and his experiences skiing much vertical of the Shore. Rory Scoles is Founder and Director of Superior Highland Backcountry (superiorhighlandbc.org), owns and operates Lutsen Recreation, Inc., a full service ski shop and lives off-grid in Finland, MN. You might have heard about wilderness therapy, but what is it? By immersing individuals in nature and focusing on skill-building, wilderness therapy treats developmental trauma, abuse and a variety of other conditions. In this presentation Rei will discuss his experience working for New Vision Wilderness, and how a combination of therapy dogs, an intense clinical approach and wilderness can help individuals to heal. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Rei has been working in education for the past 14 years. A move to Chicago and a job at an insurance company prompted him to get closer to nature, so he moved to the north woods of Wisconsin to work in wilderness therapy.
