The endless possibilities of LED
LG Electronics’ Michael Mclewee shares his insights on the success and future of LED commercial displays.
Most people now agree that LED has overtaken traditional projector or LCD videowall technology. There are many reasons for this, including price and reliability, but there are other exciting drivers behind the product’s success. Unlocking creativity with LED.
The beauty of LED is its versatility. Its modular design gives designers and architects the freedom to create digital canvases of any size or shape. It is perfect for fitting into areas that might otherwise have been passed as dead spaces before. For example, big areas behind receptions or even within lift shafts. LEDs can be curved, wrapped around 90-degree corners and even incorporated into the building fabric itself including floor and ceiling. The possibilities are endless.
Lifelike images Whatever content you are putting through an LED you are able to achieve a very accurate reproduction of the image. They produce colours that are lifelike and of cinema quality and deliver real experiences that make their environments more enticing both indoors and outdoors. These screens really grab the attention of passers-by.
A more environmentally friendly option LEDs are a more environmentally friendly product than LCDs. Their typical life span is about two and a half times longer. There are also servicing and repair benefits. LEDs can be repaired down to component level and serviced at the modular level, whereas LCDs would typically need to be replaced in their entirety.
Bringing the office experience to life People have become so used to working from home that offices now need to be an exciting space. I have spoken to corporate clients who have used LED as a way of attracting people back into the workplace by turning them into engaging, aesthetically pleasing spaces that help with productivity and teamwork. So, we are seeing LEDs used in receptions, foyers, and customer-facing areas to make these spaces more attractive. Increasingly, we are seeing a lot of adoption in meeting spaces for 6 or more people. LCD screens typically do not top 110 inches, but people want bigger, more lifelike screens. LEDs can be much larger and deliver more interactivity, presenting participants with life-sized people during video meetings. LEDs can really make meetings immersive in this way. Having a larger screen means that there is more viewable area for sharing detail and LED is also a non-reflective and non-glare technology, so it is easier to look at.
An immersive future for LED I predict that we are going to see an increase in the use of LEDs in public spaces, such as retail and airports, and there will be a lot more interaction with other types of technology such as Virtual and Augmented Reality.
The automotive industry is a good example of this emerging trend. They are turning their showrooms into immersive spaces for their customers. People can interact with LEDs by choosing their vehicle and then customising it, selecting the trim and finish, and have that life sized car appear in front of them, made to their own specifications and designs.
The immersive capabilities of LED have obvious benefits within industries that make use of simulation. VR and AR is already used in esports and gaming, but we are seeing adoption for corporate events, virtual productions and training environments for a stand-out experience. Again, the versatility of LED allows you to create much more of an immersive space.
