After the excesses of the festive season, it comes as no surprise that many want to turn over a new leaf. But whilst everyone else struggles to stick to their New Year’s Resolutions in the cold and damp northern hemisphere, why not give yourself a fighting chance by embarking on your own Robinson Crusoe adventure on the Isla de Coco. Armed with a tent and the bare minimum of belongings, you’re in for the trip of a lifetime. With temperatures soaring to 88°F, sandy beaches and vast views of the crystal clear waters of the Pacific, this is a camping trip with a difference. There are even rumours of buried treasure hidden away on the island, meaning you could be in for a very prosperous New Year indeed! “When I was 10 years old I began sketches of the island I one day might buy. From the gestation of that idea to its fruition when my business law firm took off, I spent some time observing islands in order to pick the location which would suit me best. Cocos is a beautiful haven of huge ancient trees, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Its warmth and the stability of both the Panama and US dollar currency made it even more attractive. For me, part of owning Cocos is about the preservation of nature and rainforest which is why questions about

development and making money from the island seem so alien and wrong. The island has taught me many additional skills including survival, gathering drinking water, cooking outside and building fires, etc. I like being active all day, exploring the rainforest, swimming and then sleeping long and hard at night. I visit my island regularly sometimes with my five children. We camp. I like silence, being alone, being close to nature, rising with the sun and cooking over an open fire. I explore the rainforest, swim in the sea and regularly hunt for the reputed buried treasure.”
“Despite my metal detector the USD 60m Lost Treasure of Lima has not been found. Yet when I last looked out at my five children through the dragonflies and the head-high grass, I thought: for us to own this, to be here, alone, quiet and together is all the treasure that one might want.” Susan Singleton - Solicitor, London, U K (w w w. s i n g l e l a w. c o m )

Simply oozing with Seychellois charm, Frégate Island is an exclusive island resort where the smiles of the staff are almost as bright as the African sunshine. The New York Times recently announced that Frégate is home to the world’s most beautiful beach, but with seven stunners to choose from, we want you to be the judge of that! There’s more to Frégate than just its beaches, however. The crystal clear waters simply beckon snorkelling and scuba enthusiasts to discover the kaleidoscopic marine life, whereas the popular nature trails provide a unique opportunity to spot an array of equally colourful bird life. “Worked up an appetite after all that exploring? You’re in capable hands with Frégate’s new executive chef: “We draw our inspiration from the island itself - with fresh fruit, vegetables, aromatic herbs and local spices growing in the plantation as well as wild around the island, the possibilities are endless.
I work by the motto ´anything, anytime, anywhere,´ placing your desires very much of the forefront of my work. Whether on the beach or up in the jungle canopy being serenaded by the gorgeous fairy tern, after your culinary creation is complete, all that’ s left to do is savour an intimate dinner amongst great company.”

Traditionally the time to start the much-loathed task of spring-cleaning, the month of March is rarely greeted with a smile. This year, things are set to change. Step away from the feather duster and join us on the next stop of our island-hopping tour, where we’ll be swapping spring-cleaning for spiritual cleansing at the Huvafen Fushi Spa Resort. For unparalleled relaxation, treat yourself to a massage from the skilled hands of the spa team. Choose from traditional treatments, unforgettable underwater experiences or magical crystal packages and undergo a personal transformation this spring. Relax, rejuvenate and recharge in the magnificent Maldives. “If celebrity patrons are an indicator of a hotel ’s popularity the Maldives super-lux Huvafen Fushi is about as hot as it gets. George Clooney popped in for lunch last month, Kate Moss partied in her Ocean Villa, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes booked in a massage during their honeymoon, Alexander McQueen had left when I arrived and when I left the island, Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana and John Galliano were set to arrive (separately). My day was busy, yet I did nothing. I snorkeled,
I tanned, I read, I snorkeled again, and I booked myself in for a massage. Famously, the highest point in the Maldives is only four meters above sea level, so perhaps its not surprising that the Huvafen spa is underwater, something totally exclusive to this resort. I chose the Maldivian monsoon ritual massage and it defies description. All I can say is that I don’ t think I will ever be able to top the experience. Incredible is an understatement.”
“Waking up in the Maldives is something everyone should experience before they die. Incredible is an understatement.“ Billy Tikos, The Cool Hunter – www.thecoo l h u n t e r.n e t

Occupying a tiny island just off Sri Lanka, this light, airy villa was built in the 1920s by the eccentric tea magnate, Count de Mauny. Subsequently home to a host of literary luminaries, this extraordinary villa is nothing short of a traveller’s dream. With elegant colonial furnishings, countless verandas and a stunning swimming pool, Taprobane Island is both a journey back in time and a journey to another culture. Located only 180 metres from the mainland, this little gem offers the unique opportunity to discover the real Sri Lanka. Trips to the nearby temples are a must. Similarly, no southern Sri Lankan adventure would be complete without exploring historic Galle. We recently caught up with the owner of this wonderful private island, Mr. Geoffrey Dobbs, to find out just what it is about Taprobane that makes it so special. “Well, where shall I start? The food, staff, the eccentric arrival, the pool and the sense of history that surrounds the island all count to the magic of this little gem. There’s a wonderful sense of
seclusion too - two and a half acres of sheer tropical fantasy with nothing between it and the South Pole. The Conde Nast Traveller magazine summed it up well by describing Taprobane as ‘ an impossibly romantic island villa eccentrically accessible only by wading through the sea.’ Further than that, you’ll just have to try it for yourselves!”

Far removed from the stresses & strains of the daily grind, you’ll fall in love with the slower pace of life on this inviting island. From the comfort of your cosy lodge accommodation, you’ll enjoy clean, crisp ocean air & Pacific panoramas indeed, the only sound to wake you from your island reverie is the gentle rolling of the waves outside. With goats, sheep & even friendly llamas roaming around, every day is an adventure. As well as being a great destination to spend a relaxing vacation, Forsyth Island is also the perfect place to spend a special occasion, as loved-up guests Taylor Robinson and Casey Ketterling recently informed us: “What a wonderful place to spend part of our honeymoon! In the time we were here, we paddled out to the bird preserve, chased dolphins, caught blue

cod, and dived for abalone or paua. We swam across the Allen Straight (Casey in a record 4 minutes) and biked around the island (almost - we came back when we reached the wood shed). Our time here was absolutely fabulous and we hope to come back soon. Thanks to Jan & Peter for the great food and company and to Vladi for having us! ”
“For me, a private island is not a status symbol, but a pharmacy for the soul. Balancing my television commitments with family life isn’t always easy, so when looking for a holiday, it’s important to me that my kids come first. Forsyth Island provided the perfect place to relax with the people most important to me - my family.” Jorg Pilawa, Famous German Television Host

The ideal destination for a special occasion or some well-deserved relaxation, the unspoiled beaches of the South Pacific’s best kept secret are truly unforgettable. A tropical paradise surrounded by a vast, turquoise lagoon, Tavanipupu has a history as colourful as its landscape. Originally a coconut plantation under the control of the Norwegian Captain Svenson, the island was later taken over by an English interior designer in the 1970s. Since then, the island has been transformed into an incredible vacation resort, attracting distinguished clients from all over the world - including a certain blue-blooded couple from England. We contacted current island owner, Pamela Kimberly, to find out more: “In one of the most amazing things to ever happen to this humble isle, the down to earth and entirely charming future king of England came to stay with his beautiful Kate, a true princess if ever there was one. We were going to put a pea under her bed but soon realized she would have found it in an instant! One of the guests put it very well: “It’s real.” Tavanipupu is an island where the staff paddles to
work in dugout canoes and have never eaten in a restaurant or experienced most of what the modern world takes for granted. It is as untouched as any place in the world where you can sleep in a kingsized bed and have a fridge in your room. No aircon, but that’s ok, if William and Kate are happy to stay in a room without air-con, there’ s no reason to put off the adventure of a lifetime!”

”No cars, no pollution and yet so close to town. I particularly enjoyed the island’ s fantastic wildlife with red deer, eagles and other rare birds. It was well worth a week at Stora Rullingen!”
Take advantage of those long summer days and improve your handicap on this former Viking stronghold. Boasting 6 tee-off points, the fabulous unstructured golf course on Stora Rullingen is the perfect place to get back in to the swing of things. Alternatively, undertake your very own Viking adventure. Set sail from one of the two private docking areas and explore the calm waters of Lake Mälaren. With excellent sailing conditions, endless sunshine and mile upon mile of water waiting to be discovered, this could be the fishing trip of a lifetime. Secure your catch of the day & head back to the island, before relaxing in the jacuzzi ‘til the sun finally dips below the horizon. The island is as popular with private guests as it is with larger business clients. The excellent sporting facilities and the unspoiled Swedish natural surroundings make Stora Rullingen the perfect location for a team building exercise with a difference. Indeed, we recently caught up with a CEO who hired this magnificent island for precisely that reason. Recommended to Ms. Colson by a host of island owners in the US, it’s clear to see that Stora Rullingen has built up quite a reputation over the years. As well

as being able to finally spend some quality time with her many departments and their respective managers, Ms. Colson spent her time in Sweden fishing, swimming & exploring the cellars of Stora Rullingen during a wonderful wine tasting experience. Of course, no trip to this incredible island is complete without hitting a golf ball or two, and Ms. Colson and her team had great fun getting acquainted with the island’s stunning course.

Our next island hop takes us across the North Sea to Scotland, just off the shores of the Mull of Kintyre. Home to a farm, a public house and even a picturesque lighthouse, this rural retreat is perfect for watching the ever-changing coastal scenery. Remote, yet close to the mainland, Glasgow Airport is less than an hour away by helicopter. Throughout August, however, we recommend extending your journey on to the Scottish capital, affording you the perfect opportunity to discover the Edinburgh Festival. The best place to catch a glimpse of Britain’s best up-andcoming comedians, a trip to the famous Fringe will have you laughing all the way into September. Owned by a Swedish family and a property developer, Sanda has recently undergone an impressive transformation that has brought the island into the 21st century whilst still retaining its unique rustic charm. We recently caught up with the island owners, and it was with a great deal of pride that they told us about the luxurious comfort and fine dining of the Sanda Island Hotel and Restaurant. Using only the very best of Scotland’s local produce, the food
“I like the pure nature of Sanda Island. The coast is wild and rough, and, because nobody lives here on a permanent basis, we see a great deal of animal life. We see puffins, seagulls, wild sheep and even seals, who come to Sanda Island to breed during October and November.” Michi M e i e r, I s l a n d O w n e r

here is second to none. Particular favourites are said to be the fresh seafood and, somewhat bizarrely, the eggs! Indeed, around these parts, it’ s a well-known fact that HRH Princess Anne regularly sails by to pick up a box of Sanda’ s finest ovate produce. After a hearty meal, you can choose to retire to one of the high-standard rooms, each offering fabulous furnishings and traditional Scottish styles or you can explore the island itself, strolling from the beautiful lighthouse to the magnificent St. Ninian Chapel - a popular wedding destination.

This Ibizan island, however, couldn’t be further removed from those ubiquitous Balearic beats. Free from mass tourism of San Antonio and Ibiza Town, the exclusive private island of Tagomago is the perfect place for anyone who wants to wind down and get away from it all. Boasting an impressive sauna, an expansive pool and shelter from the prying eyes of the press, Tagomago is luxury itself. With incredible facilities and plenty of space to unwind beneath the Ibizan sun, it’s no wonder that Real Madrid star and former World Footballer of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, chose this island as his luxury summer retreat. Ronaldo and his partner, Irina Shaykhlislamova, were only too happy to spend a relaxing week on this beautiful island. Far away from the cheers of the fans and the flashes of the cameras, Tagomago represents peace, relaxation and nature - the perfect place to reflect on a successful season. Between sunbathing on the spacious terrace, barbecuing on the beach and enjoying romantic sunsets from the stylish lounge areas, the Portuguese soccer star took the time to tell us his thoughts about Tagomago: “It was a pleasure to be there - it’s like paradise. Thank you very much!” Cristiano - the pleasure is all ours!

Deep in the heart of Nova Scotia, overlooking the vast Ponhook Lake is the enchanting Hunt Island. Boasting mild temperatures all year round, it’s Canada - but not as you know it. The charming log cabins and acres of unspoiled wilderness remain, but whereas many Canadian islands witness a noticeable drop of temperature in October, Hunt Island enjoys a spectacular Indian Summer. Experience an explosion of colours this autumn and get wet and wild in the warm waters of Ponhook. From burnt orange maple trees to beaming blue skies and onto the soft glow of the lake itself, Hunt Island is a veritable explosion of colour - a spectacular spectacle of nature that is guaranteed to take your breath away. “Hunt Island is the perfect place to forget about the stresses and strains of the office and to concentrate on what really matters - family. We had a great time with our three kids, taking part in a whole array of sporting activities that would otherwise have never crossed our minds. From swimming to fishing and from kayaking to simply taking long,

relaxing strolls through the autumnal landscapes of Nova Scotia, our holiday on Hunt Island was the perfect tonic. The wonderful Kejimkujik National Park was also close by, but to be honest, we had all we needed on our little island. The kids can’ t wait to travel out again, and neither can I!”

If you want to experience America this Thanksgiving, make sure you experience Nautilus! “It is a unique adventure to have a private island yet be close enough to the mainland should any needs arise while enjoying luxury and privacy. Nautilus was the perfect place to enjoy two weeks on a private island. We’re keen sailors and enjoyed rediscovering some of our favorite places in Penobscot Bay. Nautilus’ great location, made it relive the fun

of our sailing days in Pen Bay - we cruised the area almost every day! With my boat safely moored and in the substantial dock, we returned to our island just in time to catch some rays before enjoying a spectacular sunset by the magnificent infinity pool every night.”

Still dreaming of a white Christmas? Why not put an island-hopping adventure in Guana on your list to Santa and swap the snow for the beautiful white beaches of the British Virgin Islands? Book yourself a Christmas to remember or start as you mean to go on and see in the New Year in style on this incredible island. Only a short journey away from the vibrant “Old Year’s Night” celebrations on Jost van Dyke, you’ll enjoy gorgeous weather, impromptu boat-hopping parties and spectacular firework displays echoing around the bays. Whether you choose to make the most of the carnival-like atmosphere on the mainland or you prefer the intimate surroundings of Guana Island’s palm-fringed beaches, one thing’s for sure - you’re guaranteed to start 2014 with a smile on your face. “Guana Island is the most beautiful place I have ever worked for. Our guests can relax on one of our 7 beaches or explore 850 acres of island on one of our popular trails. Due to the maximum number of 36 guests its feels always like you are alone in your own little paradise. We often receive VIP guests on Guana Islands - the stars from Hollywood particularly like the privacy and natural beauty of our little island. Why else would they keep coming back?”
31 “Laid back luxury between lush vegetation and stunning wildlife.”

Wherever your journey takes you this year, make sure 2013 is one to remember Traditionally the reserve of the rich and famous, the much fabled round-the-world trip has, if anything, gained in cachet amongst the super wealthy, with the younger generation in particular choosing to define itself not so much through what it owns, but through what it does. A recent study by the Boston Consulting Group only confirmed our suspicions - today’ s modern millionaires are less about assets and all about adventures. Join u s o n
These days, however, you don’t need a six-figure salary to join the jet set. In that spirit, allow us to take you on a round-the-world trip with a difference, stopping off at some of the most unique islands the world has seen. Calling in at a whole host of regal resorts and sensual spas, this calendar is your one-way ticket for everything from American adventures to Robinson Crusoe retreats. Wherever your journey takes you this year, make sure 2013 is one to remember.
