CROSSING CONTEMPORARY CULTURES
We are proud to exhibit artists such as Angki Purmandono, Entang Wiharso, I Gusti Ngurah Udiantara/ Tantin, Maria Indria Sari and Prilla Tania, all of whom have exhibited with us for ‘Closing the Gap’. We are deeply honoured to exhibit these artists again, along with Farhan Siki, Gusmen Heriadi, Heri Dono, Ichwan Noor, Krisna Merti and Tintin Wulia, who have happily agreed to join the project. These individuals are 11 of Indonesia’s leading contemporary artists, who have mastered their respective crafts, ranging from painting, sculpture, installations to new media. They have been recognised worldwide as cultural representatives of Indonesia, from where they began to stamp their artistic mark and capture the curiosity
of the wider art world. In the few years or months that we have known them, we have been touched by the way they have used their success and influence to continually inspire and help their fellow Indonesian artists achieve their goals. MiFA’s primary mission is to bridge the gap between Australia and the rest of the Asia Pacific region, via that most nebulous yet universal concept, art. Within this mission, we seek to build stronger ties with one of our closest neighbours, Indonesia. We believe in nurturing relationships with artists beyond invisible national boundaries in order to build mutual trust, and to recreate the artistic community that they have established in their own society. ‘Crossing Contemporary Cultures’ goes beyond physical borders. Whilst in tangible terms, we are bringing in artwork from another country, in intangible terms, we are presenting the personal story of each artist – 11 artists with 11 different stories. Their individual experiences form contemporary Indonesia.
we experience in Australia. Media and consumerism, women’s struggles after childbirth, questions about our sense of identity and community. Most importantly, as a multicultural society, Australians of different backgrounds can readily relate to the struggles for independence and reform. Despite our different upbringing and environments, our thoughts and experiences share essential similarity, and when we share stories, we are touched by a sense of surprising familiarity. Contemporary Indonesian art is highly personal. Beyond the artists who are participating in this exhibition, we have learnt that the majority of Indonesian artists are deeply connected to their heritage and their country, and have made a collective and unintentional goal to voice their experiences and share the environment that they live in.
By listening to their story, we slowly realise how the social and political issues are not so different from what

CROSSING CONTEMPORARY CULTURES
‘Crossing Contemporary Cultures’ aims to cross the borders between two art worlds – Indonesia and Australia. From MiFA’s 2011 exhibition entitled ‘Closing the Gap’ curated by Bryan Collie, we were first introduced to the empowering work of Indonesian contemporary artists and from there planted the seeds of a growing relationship. In the past 2 years, we have embraced not only Indonesian contemporary art, but their inspiring and flourishing culture.
