In 2020 we released a call for contributions for SUBTITLES - a zine navigating our relationship with subtitles and media consumption growing up in diaspora. The idea for this zine was inspired by our team’s collective experiences as migrants-of-colour with encountering media through different filters of translation and language. Whether it be local news, karaoke, a favourite foreign indie film or a cheesy two-hundred episode drama, subtitles have had the ability to bridge understandings between ourselves, our family and our connections to home. As a result, we received a plethora of essays, screenshots, illustrations, and more. We hope you enjoy this zine, and give a special thanks for Shivani Narsai for putting this together!
