Carmen Lozar The Museum and the glass. "The Museum and Glass" is the title of the conference that, for some time now, I have prepared to spread the knowledge of our Museum and its collection; of the figure of our Honorary President Javier Gómez; of the differences between glass and glass, the types of glass, their origins and diffusion, their composition, the different glass techniques, the techniques of their manufacture, the extraction of glass and its coloring.

About a year ago we offered this activity, among other types of conferences, to the Senior Center in the neighborhood of Loranca, in the Madrid municipality of Fuenlabrada, as we knew the availability of a large room within its facilities and a powerful projector for the reproduction of our slides. When it seemed that the offer had been deposited in the trunk of the memories, we received a call from a person in charge of the Center showing their interest in our proposal and calling us for a meeting. In this meeting I explained in a detailed way the content of the conference and we agreed that they would propose a date to do it after examining their agenda of activities. So last March 30 in the morning and with the assistance of some twentyfive people, I was able to develop the content of the conference about our Museum and about glass in general. After the talk, the President of the Center suggested that I discuss with the people in charge of the rest of the Senior Centers in the municipality of Fuenlabrada the possibility of holding the conference in each of them and of scheduling guided visits to the MAVA.
It seems that after trying for so long to spread the knowledge of our Museum and the culture of glass in general, the seeds that we We have not had much success with this offer, since have been spreading with great interest begin to only one Association of germinate. women and one of Health have echoed our offer. A whole mandate was necessary for it to be stained with the preconstitutional shield that presides over the skylight of the main staircase of María Pita's palace, leaving that place. A large crane is located on one side of the City Hall to prepare the fasteners that allow operators to remove these glasses. The action, which will culminate in the coming days, was scheduled to take place in 2017, by then 60,500 euros were reserved in the municipal budget, which were not spent until now, after many meetings and files that delayed the work.
Finally it was decided to change the preconstitutional eagle by the current shield of Spain. The performances, curiously, are carried out by the same company that had already installed it there in 1955, when the stained glass window was created, which in a few years, despite being a relatively recent work, was cataloged and protected by Patrimonio. The firm of stained glass Maumajean -founded in 1860- is still active, restoring and creating new pieces. Among his works, for example, there is a stained-glass window of the Cathedral of Seville and the dome of the Palace Hotel, in Madrid.
Among other things, it took several months to determine what was to be For weeks, protections put in the place of that have been placed on shield. María Pita's main

staircase. In the skylight tests were made and a transparent part was removed. Now they have to remove the dozen pieces that make up the shield and replace them with new ones. The withdrawal of that symbol was an old demand of collectives such as the Committee for the Recovery of Historical Memory. According to Manuel Monge, representative of that entity, they tried it without success 15 years ago. In 2009 there was a new attempt but the six experts of the special commission did not agree, there was a tie of positions and the shop window finally stayed on the site. Until now, it will be finally retired.

If we want to understand this type of work we have to go back to the third quarter of the 19th century, when, favored by the invention of the elevator and probably influenced by the regency of Queen María Cristina of Habsburgo-Lorraine, a new concept of mansion Many families of the upper bourgeoisie, especially Madrid, abandon their old singlefamily houses to build modern buildings of six or seven floors, with the idea that parents can live close to all their descendants, in large independent apartments of more than five hundred square meters each one.
Information obtained from the Museum.
Finally, the stained-glass window of the Maumejean House is already placed, after a meticulous cleaning and conservation work by the master glassmaker Alberto Cascón. We take this opportunity to inform you that four new stained-glass windows are now on the way to form part of the Museum's Collection. Pieces that we assure

It has 2 meters, 17 centimeters high x 90 centimeters wide, decorated with transparent geometric crystals and a simple frieze with grotesque motifs.
These houses were communicated by two stairs of common use, one of service and another main one that always included some elegant elevator of wood, glass and iron.
The type of stained glass window that occupies us served as a luminaire, to fill the access landings with the natural light of the patio.
Our stained glass comes from a house in Madrid, The stained glass window located on the corner between Zurbano and was signed by the Maumejean workshops in Fernando el Santo streets. 1896.

The political class relies on them depending on the situation experienced at a given time: some were given facilities, others were denied; they demanded direct or indirect compensation, such as the contribution of free labor. The compensations were destined to defray the public expenses. The poorest schools obtained small concessions, but the richest schools "were pressured by the rates that were established on luxury, and which were charged in the original centers of production". We have the example of Alejandro Severo (2nd century AD) who imposes a fee on the wool, glass craftsmen, furriers, coachmen, silversmiths, goldsmiths and other artisans to be able to dedicate the money that was obtained to the maintenance of popular hot springs. It has been tried to assign to the hereditary tradition of belonging to the schools the sufficient motive to be able to
prevent some craft sectors from abandoning the family tradition due to a possible crisis in their production and commerce.
attributes to them the responsibility of the violent acts that took place in Pompeii in the course of a gladiatorial spectacle, in 64 AD.
Artisanal schools emerged as free associations, but over time gradually transformed into associations more dependent on control by the State, and may become imperial bodies in late Roman times. The emperors used them to achieve popular consensus.

Eight years after its closure due to economic infeasibility and management problems, the artistic sanctuary of Eduardo Chillida in Hernani (Gipuzkoa) will reopen on April 17. There is no better place to look at the work of the most universal Spanish sculptor of the twentieth century. Goodbye to the curse of Chillida Leku. Welcome to the father's house. betting on it - to reopen the doors of this magical place located in the municipality of Hernani (Gipuzkoa) and 15 minutes by car from the center of San Sebastian. It is the legacy of the most universal Spanish sculptors of the twentieth century: 40 largescale works (iron, steel, granite) deployed by the 11 hectares of green grass, oaks, beech and poplar, and half a hundred works of medium and small format installed in the hamlet of the sixteenth century, an amazing container of stone, wood and glass, a sculpture in itself.
The old dream of San Sebastian sculptor Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) and his wife, Pilar Belzunce (19252015), once diluted in the perfect storm of political swings, family misgivings and economic unfeasibility, takes again body.

Pedro Ciga Mayo and Dorotea Fernández Morales bought the Manor in 1898. They were two people with great economic resources, committed to their environment, and lovers of nature and culture. The Modernism, in peak at that time, fitted perfectly with their way of being. With their drive and determination they formed a rich heritage of great variety, from the historic garden to the Aizkolegi telescope, based above all on nature, technical innovations and the enjoyment of the environment. The Government of Navarre, through the Directorate General of CultureInstitution Príncipe de Viana, has restored the rich set of modernist stained glass that partially closes the marquee attached to the chapel of the old Señorío de Bertiz, and that today sees the light of day. first time after remaining 30 years in store waiting for its restoration. The project has been directed by Violeta Romero, restoration technician of the Historical Heritage Service, and carried out by the specialized companies Harri (d) ura and Vitrales Mikel Delika. It has had 33,000 euros of budget.
As of 2011, the Directorates General of Environment and Culture of the Government of Navarre began to take the first steps of this complex and ambitious intervention. We must bear in mind that it has also been necessary to structurally rehabilitate the wrought iron canopy attached to the hermitage, a task carried out by the initiative of the Bertiz Natural Park.
A large marquee of modernist aesthetics was added that was partially closed to the exterior by a large stained glass window, signed by the Casa Mauméjean de San Sebastián in 1908.
Its structure presented alterations caused by the oxidation of iron, with water leaks and problems of biodeterioration.
In 1949, Pedro Ciga bequeathed the Lordship of Bertiz to Navarre, with the requirement of conserving it without changing its natural characteristics. It was declared a natural park in 1984.

Among the many reforms and constructions that were undertaken, was that of the Baroque chapel, designed in 1907 by the San Sebastian architect Luis Elizalde.
The temporary exhibition "La luz de Bertiz" brings us closer to the restoration process of the great modernist stained glass window, as well as to the varied set of historical stained glass windows that the Bertiz Natural Park preserves in the palace, chapel and Aizkolegi palace.
Modernist stained glass
In the second half of the 19th century, stained-glass windows became an art perfectly integrated into architecture and its most innovative proposals. Art Nouveau was brewing. The stained -glass window appears as an inseparable language of the value conferred to the ornament, the treatment of light and the lightness of the architecture of iron.
This development of the art of stained glass is perfectly reflected in the The 26 panels of the now refurbished Señorío de Bertiz, given that it houses, window (13 superiors of almost two in very little space, a wide variety of meters in height and 13 inferiors of styles and techniques of stained glass, smaller size) show an allegory of the Bertiz's stained glass windows bring fostered both by the enthusiasm of the seasons, with an idealized us closer to different artistic styles Ciga-Fernández marriage and by the representation of the landscape of the developed at the beginning of the 20th mastery of the house Mauméjean. region and its variations, through century: historicist movements inspired This prolific artisan workshop was one different female figures , one at each by the Renaissance or various of the introducers of the art nouveau end. examples of Modernism. stained glass window in the Iberian They constitute one of the most This heritage has reached our days Peninsula. eloquent examples of figurative and is the protagonist of the exhibition. In the glass of the pyramid of the Louvre Museum, which turns 30 years old and has become another emblem of Paris, there are no longer scars of the controversy caused by its avantgarde design in the middle of a neoclassical palace.
The project consisted of providing a large lobby that gave access to the different wings. "For that purpose, the pyramid was like evidence," says Lang, who recalls that the first time he saw the glass monument was not surprised.
It is not the first time - recalls in conversation with Efe Jack Lang, the Socialist minister of Culture who promoted the project in the 80s - that a great monument arouses the blind fury of the purists before going to swell the payroll of the symbols of Paris.
When the model was leaked in 1984, the attacks intensified. "They criticized me, but many wanted to weaken the president," says Lang, who appreciates the controversy: "It allowed us to popularize the project, explain it better, tell that it was a more profound reform."
The Eiffel Tower or the Pompidou Center suffered the same initiatory ritual that this work underwent, which the Chinese architect Ieoh Ming Pei turned into the entrance door of the largest museum in the world.
"They told us that we were murdering a palace from the time of Philip Augustus," recalls Lang, who convinced President François Mitterrand to carry the project through thick and thin. It was not easy, recalls the former minister, an icon of culture during Mitterrand's time and now head of the Arab World Institute in Paris. "But we had to do it, because it had become the symbol of our willingness to make culture a priority," he says.
The press was angry with Mitterrand, whom they accused of wanting to become the "first pharaoh" of France. The minister then recalled that it was the cultural supplement of the newspaper "Le Figaro" the most combative. But that opposition, far from intimidating the president, gave him more strength. "He liked controversies, like me, now, for example, I miss them a lot," he says.
The result was a polyhedron of 1,000 square meters of base, more than 21 meters high supported on a structure of 95 tons of steel, a chassis of 105 tons of aluminum and covered with 673 diamonds of a specially The pyramid, which attracted all composed glass to preserve its criticism, was the central element transparency with Over time. of a profound transformation of the museum, something Architect Chien Chung Pei, who stagnant, lending one of its collaborated with his father on wings to the Ministry of Finance design, now remembers that "the and another area to a parking lot. problem was political, not www.amigosmava.org
architecture." The pyramid, he says, solved all the challenges. It allowed the museum to have a single entrance, avoided touching the facade of the former royal palace and, in addition, responded to the desire of Mitterrand to "have a structure as light as possible, almost aerial." The current director of the museum, Jean-Luc Martinez, maintains that "from the first moment it was a success, it gave the impression that it was always there, that it was not a dressing". Before the pyramid, Louvre received about two million visitors annually. Last year exceeded 10 million. "This increase has to be appreciated by the pyramid, visitors from all over the world come to see at the same time a monument of the history of France and an exceptional collection." From that alchemy between both is born the success of Louvre ", affirms Martinez. Lang savors with pride that his bet has surpassed well the three first decades of life: "For me, the real triumph was when, once finished the work, the director of the supplement of 'Le Figaro', Robert Hersant, called me to ask If I could celebrate the anniversary of the magazine under the pyramid, it sounded like surrender to me and I said yes. Nowadays, new technologies for the treatment of glass provide new ways to use this material in architecture. Applied indoors, specifically in retail stores, glass in its different textures, colors, and levels of transparency can allow the display of certain products, hide private areas without obstructing the passage of light, and attract the attention of customers as points focal, among many other uses. The commercial stores always present some percentage of mystery. In its cabinets, carefully selected products are exhibited, but the rest is suggested to be discovered by the client. Textured glass can generate these effects, and it is even possible to mix different textures in a single project to deliver an even more attractive and complex result. Using curved double-glazed glass, the Adidas Factory Outlet project, designed by Wulf & Partner, is almost completely wrapped in textured glass, covered with a thermal coating called Azur, which improves its performance and incorporates a bluish tint.
Through it, the light diffuses evenly throughout the interior, hiding the direct views and functioning as a soft background for the products presented. Indoors, the wines of the Knickerbocker Hotel Bar, designed by Gabellini Sheppard Associates, appear mysterious behind a translucent, textured and "watery" screen, which varies its color and brightness depending on the elements located behind it. By incorporating glass with backlighting systems, commercial spaces can attract the attention of potential customers in a creative way, as well as potentially contribute to the urban environment.
In the case of the Standard Dome Blu Dot Showroom, a 70-year-old building has been remodeled and incorporates a diffuse glass screen that attracts views and blocks moisture. Its brilliant upper 'volume' helps to delicately illuminate nearby public spaces. Glass can be part of the identity of a space, incorporating reflected, recorded, painted, fixed or changing colors through dichroic systems. The color, added to the lighting, can highlight even more the presence of a brand, and thus attract the gaze of passers-by.
By varying its tone in its extension, the saturated pink glass used in this store located in In the Pier 17 South Street Row Hotel, New York, designed Seaport project (2017), designed by Gabellini Sheppard by SHoP Architects & R.A. At first glance they look like simple glass sculptures, but when you see them in different angles, they show multiple and amazing images. They are the works of Thomas Medicus an artist specialized in creating anamorphic sculptures with glass strips. Either when you see the rotating sculpture or when you walk around the piece, you see fragments of images and each turn of 90 degrees, it presents a new image that
is assembled and then dismantled again. According to the Austrian artist, creating these works is not easy because for each side of the sculpture requires a couple of images, and always need to fill exactly the same space so that when you look at the sculpture, the other image has to be exactly behind the one in the foreground and vice versa. After deciding on the images, the detailed versions of them are drawn on paper, then they are

Once the strips are painted, begin to assemble them. Each finished piece reveals four different images. It should be noted that it may take up to a year to complete each of the sculptures, but the effort is worth it, because their works are simply amazing.

The most advanced Spanish technology in the field of glass processing ovens will be at the service of the first transformer in the sector to turn Tvitec into an international benchmark in the manufacture of high performance curved glass. Hornos Pujol firm, based in Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Barcelona), and Tvitec, based in Cubillos del Sil (León), have signed a commercial collaboration agreement to launch the highest quality curved glass solutions in the world market of the building. Pujol will exclusively design an EVA and HST laminate oven measuring 12 x 3.21 meters for Tvitec. This is the HST + LAM Multichamber Super Jumbo model, capable of operating at the same time with two 6-meter cameras. Pujol will apply the latest technology and its I + D + i programs in the manufacture of this double line of laminated curved glass so that the new Tvitec plant can supply the most cutting-edge products both technically and aesthetically for the construction of singular projects. The manufacture of curved pieces will allow Tvitec to attend globally all those architectural projects in which the envelopes of large constructions usually combine the use of flat and curved units. Tvitec has relied on the technical and professional expertise and over 100 years of Horjões Pujol to reach the maximum levels of quality and productivity demanded by its customers farmers, engineers, builders,

It's ok right?". Barbeito is the second generation of a company 60 years old, and that was reinvented with a crisis that forced her to decide between death (stay) and life (transformation).
-In our growth process we are committed to being leaders in technological developments. We wanted to give our customers innovations that allowed them to differentiate themselves in the market. Two large Spanish groups, Pamesa and Cosentino, have also designed outstanding projects. The Valencian Pamesa, first tile producer in Europe, is investing 15 million to install panels in 70,000 square meters of surface, with 13.24 MW of power; the Almerian Cosentino (world leader in quartz surfaces) and, in the absence of global data, it is known that it will have a power of between 10 and 40 MW.

Investments The Villafranca glass plant is one of the largest consumers of electricity in Spain. With the eight-megawatt photovoltaic power that will be located on its roof, it will obviously not cover all of its energy needs, but it will represent a significant part of the total energy cost. According to the project, what generates from next year thanks to the photovoltaic plant can account for 12% of the total annual bill of the Extremadura glass factory. The group has invested more than 12 million euros in recent years only in sustainability, particularly in the purchase of more environmentally friendly technologies. Furnaces, for example, are highly energy consumers, although in the last 25 years this consumption has been reduced by more than half.
TODAY it was just over a year ago that Barbosa & Almeida will be able to produce up to 500 million more bottles a year with the expansion of its factory in Villafranca. The construction of a third furnace and two more warehouses has meant the investment of 40 million and the creation of 80 more direct jobs. In addition, it will invest another 25 million for the in-depth remodeling of the first existing furnace. To that investment budget are added the 5.5 million for the installation of photovoltaic panels along the roof of the factory, an initiative for what it calls reducing the environmental footprint.
