Preston Singletary is a Seattle artist descended from a Tlingit clan in southeastern Alaska.

The Tlingit are one of the Native American tribes located on the Pacific Northwest Coast and extending from southern Alaska to Oregon.



Singletary's work is imbued with the sophisticated and vibrant artistic traditions of the Northwest Coast.

Is glass a solid or liquid material? To this question, which has been discussed with zeal during the last decades by experts in the area, has now been given a new answer: "Glass is a state outside thermodynamic equilibrium (a state in which thermal, chemical equilibria and mechanical occur simultaneously) and noncrystalline matter, which seems solid at a short time scale, but which continuously relaxes towards the liquid state ".

Another alternative and more detailed definition is the following: "Glass is a state outside the thermodynamic and non-crystalline equilibrium of condensed matter, which exhibits a glass transition." The glass structures are similar to those of supercooled liquids (LSE). and they relax spontaneously in the direction of the state of LSE, their final destination, for infinitely long times, is to crystallize. " The proposals for these new definitions of the material are by Edgar Dutra Zanotto, professor of the Department of Materials Engineering of the Federal University of SĂŁo Carlos (UFSCar) and coordinator of the Center for Research, Technology and Education in Vitreous Materials (CerTEV) -one of the Centers for Research, Innovation and Dissemination (CEPIDs) funded by FAPESP-, and John Mauro, professor of the Department of Engineering and Materials Science of Penn State University, United States, and published in an article published in the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids.

"There are a number of definitions of glass, but most contain serious errors, many definitions explain that glass is a solid, and others that it is an isotropic material [whose properties are the same in different directions], but many glasses are not. "Zanotto said.

"That's why we decided to conduct a critical and condensed review of the state of the art on glass and show that they have a structure very different from that of solid materials, since they

continuously relax and crystallize," he explained.

The initiative to propose a new definition of glass arose during an inaugural class entitled "Glass Myths", which the researcher dictated during the commemoration of the centenary of the Society of Glass Technology (SGT), held at the University of Sheffield, in United Kingdom, at the beginning of September last year.

The referred class, called Turner Memorial Lecture, is organized by the English university since 1966 and has had names such as Sir Harry Kroto (1939-2016), Nobel Prize in Chemistry of 1996 for the discovery of fullerenes (allotropic forms of carbon ), Sir Alastair Pilkinton (1920-1995), inventor of the float process, used worldwide in the manufacture of flat glass, and Larry L. Hench (19382015), inventor of bioglasses.

Zanotto, the first Brazilian who is invited to dictate this inaugural class, made during his presentation precisely the question about whether glass is a solid or liquid material.

This question resulted in a heated discussion with various scientists who were present among the public, especially with Arun Varshneya, professor emeritus of Alfred University, United States, known as "the guru of glasses" and author of one of the books on most read glasses in the world.

Based on this discussion, Zanotto subsequently initiated an exchange of e-mails with Varshneya and began to write an article tending to demystify the idea that glass is a solid, as the Indian researcher himself based in the United States maintained.

"There are innumerable evidences described in dozens of articles that show that glass has characteristics very different from those of solids," said Zanotto.

One of these characteristics, according to the researcher, indicates

that the glasses have a structure very similar to that of the liquids from which they are formed.

Another characteristic indicates that these flow (deform) spontaneously with the passage of time and by a minimum pressure, which may be less than the action of gravity. Meanwhile, the crystalline solid materials are only deformed by applying an external pressure inversely proportional to the temperature.

The lower the temperature, the greater the tension that must be applied to a solid crystal to deform it, Zanotto compared.

"On the other hand, any positive pressure or voltage other than zero is enough for a glass to flow at any temperature," said Zanotto. "The time it takes to deform depends a lot on the temperature and the chemical composition."

"If the temperature at which the glass is subjected is close to zero Kelvin [the absolute zero] it will take an infinitely long time until the material is deformed, but if it is heated, it will begin to flow," he said.

The third characteristic that differentiates glass from a solid material is that at the end of its existence it ends up crystallizing, while a glass, for example, since it is already in a solid state, it does not flow or crystallize. Based on these three characteristics, Zanotto and Mauro suggest that glasses could be defined as frozen liquids: materials with the structure of a liquid that they were frozen without crystallizing by cooling them below a certain temperature, called the glass transition temperature.
