H C E E P S E H T F O T R A P Each part of speech explains not what the word is, but how the word is used. In fact, the same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next. The next few examples show how a word's part of speech can change from one sentence to the next, and following them is a series of sections on the individual parts of speech.

Is a word formed by joining parts two or more older words.

A clause is a group of words containing a subject and verb

Is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of a sentence.

Is not complete sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause.

Is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. It describes, identifies or gives further information about noun.

Is used as a subject or an object. Is used in the same ways as a noun.
