WELCOME TO THE SUNNY SIDE OF EUROPE

The Iberia Peninsula has a long and diverse history as the crossroads between Europe and Africa. Many empires have ruled the region, from the Phoenicians to the Greeks, Romans and Visigoths, leading to the Moorish conquest. Catholic monarchs ruled here, followed by the Fascist regimes of the twentieth century, finally evolving into democracy: republican in Portugal, and a monarchy in Spain. The wine legacy of the Iberian Peninsula reflects the region’s deep and diverse cultural and geographical history. Ancient and modern sensibilities exist side by side in this glorious part of the world, offering the opportunity to taste small production wines in regions that are, surprisingly, rarely visited. Each sub region contributes its own part to the Iberian story, but there are always common threads that tie everything together.

VINHO VERDE

THE REGION

V

inho Verde is produced in Portugal’s largest wine region, located in the northwest of the country and bordered at north by the river Minho and at west by the Atlantic Ocean. Intense precipitation and mild temperatures throughout the year contribute to the region’s “green atmosphere” that inspired the wine name: Vinho Verde direct translation is Green Wine! From this unique region comes a unique white wine extremely fresh, young, light, and aromatic that suits all kinds of occasions as it matches perfectly seafood, fish, salads, and even sushi.

In recent years, the quality of Vinho Verde has improved tremendously due to the continuous training and renewed enthusiasm amongst producers. The traditional method of growing vineyards on top of trees and pergolas has been replaced in many parts by modern and wired rows that allow grapes to become healthier through increased sunlight and breeze exposure. Nine sub-regions compose Vinho Verde DOC, all named after towns and rivers: Monção and Melgaco, Cávado, Lima, Ave, Basto, Sousa, Baião, Amarante and Paiva.

8

www.wineberia.com

VINHO VERDE

Monção and Melgaço are located in the northern part of the Vinho Verde region, a place with lower rainfall and higher temperature when compared with the rest of the territory. In this microclimate, Alvarinho is the most popular grape variety, producing a full-bodied dry wine with a complex and fresh aroma reminiscent of citrus fruits and peaches. Travelling south, you will find the sub-regions Cávado, Lima and Ave that produce a very fresh and aromatic wine, often with a scent of citrus. Main grape varieties used here are Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura. Basto, Sousa and Baião sub-regions also produce dry light wines with rich flavours and mineral presence in tasting. Finally, Amarante and Paiva are the sub-regions known for their fresh, young and highly aromatic red wines.

BEYOND WINE

Life itself is a journey, and Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal, is a great starting point to explore this beautiful region rich in history, culture and nature. In 2012 Guimarães was crowned the European Capital of Culture, and in the same year, the neighboring city of Braga was considered the European Capital of Youth. The area offers abundant cultural relics, colourful festival processions filled with contagious excitement, rich gastronomy and ancient manor houses that recently have been converted into hotels. Outdoor Activities

In a region where Nature rules, there is an abundance of outdoor activities to choose from: watersports, such as rafting in Gerês or kite surfing on the magnificent coast that stands west. Take in the refreshing scenery of the beaches on the coastline, the mountains coated in lush green vegetation, recovered manor houses, the awe-inspiring blend of traditional monumental and modern architecture, rich gastronomy and never ending festivities.

Festivities One of the outstanding features that make Guimarães irresistible to tourists is the festive atmosphere that hangs over the city permanently, that helped the city to conquer the status of European Capital of Culture in 2012. The streets of Guimarães become agog with festivities as crowds of people participate in the pilgrimage of S. Torcato during the 1st Sunday of July, where the colourful allegorical displays and processions depict scenes from the Saint’s life. And on the 3rd of May in Barcelos, you can also participate in the pilgrimage dedicated to the sacredness of the Lord of the Crosses.

L

and of the famous Port wine, Douro is also producing world class dry reds, whites and rosés due to the talent of the local winemakers that have learned through times to bring out the best of a unique region recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage. Located in the northeast of the country surrounded by mountain ranges, the famous terraced vineyards along the Douro River are a result of the human effort in producing quality wine under very challenging conditions. The schist soil increases even more the producer’s difficulties, but it is also a key element in providing the sugar and colour concentrated musts that origin the distinct taste and aroma of the region’s wine. For centuries, Douro growers have been focused in producing highly acclaimed fortified Ports, but in recent years, the region is also being recognized for its red and white wines. This is the reason why two individual DOCs are located in the same area: Port and Douro’s unfortified wines. The sub-regions of Douro are divided in Baixo Corgo at West, Douro Superior at East and Cima Corgo in the centre, all of them with distinct altitude and sun exposure.

• Baixo Corgo (west) is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean with higher precipitation and moist that helps to fertilize the soil and create the perfect environment to produce not only Port but also table wines;

• Cima Corgo (centre), where the weather can be described as Mediterranean, grapes have higher sugar concentration, perfect for the vintage production; • Douro Superior (east): the summers are extremely hot and contribute to the production of fortified Moscatel, sparkling and white wines (mainly in highlands);

PORT WINE CELLARS Port is produced from grapes grown and processed in the demarcated Douro region. The wine produced is then fortified by the addition of a neutral grape spirit known as aguardente in order to stop the fermentation, leaving residual sugar in the wine, and to boost the alcohol content. The wine is then aged, often in barrels stored in a Lodge (meaning "cellar") as is the case in Vila Nova de Gaia, near Oporto before being bottled and shipped to various markets around the world. Most of the port lodges date back to the 1700´s and 1800´s and they are supremely charming with old cellars, vintage casks and great views over the river. You will discover the many pleasures of port today, tasting the main port wine styles including White Port, Ruby, LBV, Tawny and Vintage Port.

THE REGION

T

his region is located in Beira Litoral between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountainous Dão region. The climate is considered maritime with mild temperatures, rainy winters and cool summers. Despite being a hilly region, the majority of the vines are planted on the flatter lands where the soils are typically sandy or clay-limestone, each one influencing the style of wine produced. The red grape variety Baga, usually planted in clayey soils, is considered Bairrada’s ADN, giving the wine intense colours, fruity aromas and longevity. However, in recent years, the well-known international grape varieties such as Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir have become popular and coexist with the local ones. White wines are produced from a mix of local and international varieties planted in the region’s sandy soils that deliver the wine a delicate and aromatic character. Bairrada has a great heritage of sparkling wine production by the traditional, bottle-fermented method, a practice that has been developing and increasing in the 21st century. Currently, the region accounts for around 65 percent of the country’s production of sparkling wines.

THE REGION

his wine region is located north of Lisbon city, an area where the traditional and international varieties mingle and enable a tremendous range of wines from the citric and floral whites to the elegant, aromatic and tannin rich reds. Due to the Atlantic influence, the weather is mild with fresh summers and soft winters. Airstream is a strong feature near the coast where the vines are wind-stressed and hard pressed to ripen their grapes, while inland, the mountain ranges offer protection to the vineyards planted on the slopes. Since the nineties, Lisboa has made important investments in the vineyard redesign achieving a new status in the winemaking panorama in recent years. The region that was formerly known as Estremadura is now known for its great price per quality ratio.

Lisboa wine region is composed by nine Denominations of Origin: in the south Colares, Bucelas, Carcavelos, in the centre Óbidos, Torres Vedras, Lourinhã, Alenquer, Arruda and in the north, Encostas d’Aire. In the south part, Colares is considered a “small jewel” (bellow 10.000 bottles/yr) where Ramisco grapes are planted on vines that snake along the limestone soil and sandy dunes to reach for protection against the aggressive ocean winds.

Survival in this extreme environment generates wines with the ability to age well reaching a great balance between fresh acidity with high tannins. Also in the south area, the Bucelas Denomination of Origin produces exclusively white wines from Arinto grapes highly appreciated since the 16th century by UK drinkers. In the central area we find the region’s best DOC wines as a result of important investments made in vineyard modernisation and grape variety selection. Alenquer stands out with some of the region best red wines recognized as aromatic, elegant, rich in tannins and capable of ageing well in bottle. White wines are considered citric and fresh. At north stands Encostas D’Aire, the region’s largest Denomination of Origin known for a multitude of varieties: Baga, Aragonez, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Arinto, Malvasia Fina and Fernão Pires. The impact of this interesting mix is visible in the wine profile that has gained more body, colour and intensity in recent years.

THE REGION

A

lentejo is considered one of the biggest and well-known Portuguese regions due to it’s rich, fruity and easy drinking wines, produced under a very hot and dry climate with wide sun exposure throughout the year. Naturally, the most pleasant time to visit Alentejo is April or May, when the atmosphere is still green and aromatic, just before the intense heat of the summer months. The region is made of extensive plains with mountains only in the northeast, where the countryside becomes greener and the air cooler. Soils are low on fertility, made of granite, pink marble, schist and limestone, which provide the conditions to obtain an enduring and resistant vine. Landscapes mingle with the vines and cereal crops; an ever-changing canvas of colour from intense green towards the end of winter to the deep ochre tones during the final months of summer. The eight sub-regions that compose the Denomination of Origin can be divided into three main groups.

45

www.wineberia.com

ALENTEJO

• Borba, Évora, Redondo and Reguengos that produce smooth, harmonious, very easy-drinking wines; • Portalegre, where the vines are planted on granite slopes of the São Mamede mountain range with its own fresh microclimate; • Vidigueira, Granja-Amareleja and Moura that are impacted by a significantly hotter climate and poor, limestone-based soils. In a region where red wine is king, the main grape varieties used are Roupeiro, Arinto, Trincadeira, Castelão, Aragonez, Antão Vaz and Alicante Bouschet. Besides the DOC sub-regions, Alentejo also has many regional wines that can incorporate grape varieties beyond those predicted in the strict DOC wines legislation, such as Chardonnay, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon.

BEYOND WINE The plains that extend as far as the eye can see start close to the river Tagus. While to the north, the pace is set by the green of the flatlands, further south the landscape combines with the sun, the heat and a slower pace of life. To the north, the pastures of the marshlands; in the vast interior, unending flatness, and fields of wheat waving in the wind; at the coast, wild, beautiful beaches waiting to be discovered. The vastness of the landscape is dotted with cork oaks and olive trees that withstand time. Here and there, you find a walled town, such as MarvĂŁo or Monsaraz, or an ancient dolmen to recall the magic of the place. Around the hills, low, whitewashed houses stand on small knolls, castles evoke battles and conquests and the yards and gardens witness the Arab influences which shaped the people and nature.

THE REGION

D

enomination of Origin Rías Baixas is renowned for the Albariño grape, an indigenous variety that produces some of the world’s foremost white wines. Located in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, the DO was formally established in 1988 and Albariño has always been the flagship of this coastal region. In Rías Baixas’ unique climate, Albariño shares the same mineral-rich soils and cool climate as the world’s other renowned white wine-producing regions, including France’s Loire Valley, New Zealand, and the Rhine region of Germany. Often referred to as Green Spain, the hillsides of Galicia are covered in mist that shroud granite castles, vineyards and manor houses. Mother Nature does not grant an emerald landscape without a price: high rainfall. The region’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean brings a cool maritime climate with ample rain, and more importantly, abundant sunshine during the critical growing and ripening season for Albariño. This ensures wines with good natural acidity and balance, and a characteristic aromatic profile that makes Albariño from Rías Baixas a sensory delight. Even accounting for rain, Rías Baixas’ more than 2,200 hours of sunshine per year are more than enough to develop the luscious ripeness of fruit in most vintages.

54

www.wineberia.com

RÍAS BAIXAS

According to local legend, the Rías Baixas are the traces left by the fingers of God’s hand, when after creation he rested for a moment in Galicia. Whatever your belief, the beauty of the landscape inspires divine feelings. Rías Baixas is Galician for “Lower Rias,” and refers to four estuaries – Ría de Muros y Noia, the Ría de Arousa, the Ría de Pontevedra, and the Ría de Vigo – located on the southwestern coast of Galicia, Spain. The Rías Baixas are arms of the sea that mix fresh and salt water to sustain perhaps the world’s richest maritime life – and also contribute to the distinctive geography of the region.

www.wineberia.com

RIBERA DEL DUERO

THE REGION

I

n North-Central Spain, we find the Ribera del Duero region, surrounded by deep valleys from the mountains of the Sistema Ibérico and winding all the way to the Portuguese city of Porto, where the Duero (there called the Douro) empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Travelling upriver into Spain, these valleys become even steeper, with high altitudes bringing more sun exposure during the day, along with cooler days and evenings. The longer, cooler growing season contributes to the complexity of the resulting wines, however with temperatures and weather in general being so much more unpredictable in the mountains, there are years in which the grapes have little chance of ripening fully. Throughout history, it is a region that has been ravaged by war. Snugly nestled between the mountain ranges of the Sierra de Guadarrama and Sierra de Gredos to the south, and the Sierras de la Demanda and Sierra de Cantábria to the north, there is evidence of Roman presence as well as of Napoleon’s War of Independence and El Cid’s lifelong battles in support of Spanish unification. Ribera wines are primarily made from Tempranillo, and are full bodied and modern in style, very similar to Rioja although slightly more rustic. Having been grown in higher altitudes, the wines exhibit more

63

www.wineberia.com

RIBERA DEL DUERO

complexity than the inland wines of Rioja, with higher acidity and tannins that allow them to develop with age. Known for its top quality Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, you’ll find the wines to be mostly single varietal as opposed to a blend, and will be classified with the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva to denote their aging processes and oak influence. Another major difference between Ribera del Duero and Rioja is that you’ll find more American oak influence in Rioja, while Ribera wines tend to use more French oak. This results in a different texture and flavour profile, the Ribera wines are more polished and modern in style, possessing the flavour characteristics of vanilla and exotic spices like clove and cinnamon.

THE REGION

R

ioja is located along the banks of the Ebro River, and its wines have been praised for centuries, with documents dating to 1650 that were entered into law to protect and ensure the quality of the wines produced there. The allowed grape for red is Tempranillo, which can be blended with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano, Maturana Tinta and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. For whites, Viura is the main grape, followed by Malvasia, Garnache Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Blanca and Turruntes of Rioja. We also find Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo. There are three distinct regions within Rioja: • Rioja Alta is characterized by its higher elevation, which result in a shorter, cooler growing season. Wines from Rioja Alta have a brighter fruit character and are lighter bodied; • Rioja Alavesa wines are more full-bodied than those of Rioja Alta and often have higher acidity and tannins; • Rioja Baja is the hottest and driest area of the Rioja, and potential alcohol can be very high. Flavour profiles of these wines may tend toward prune, leather and raisin due to the high heat in the growing season. ► ► ► Click here for wine & Food experiences near Rioja

Gastronomy Along the rivers of La Rioja, you’ll find orchards that supply the ingredients for the region’s tasty vegetable dishes. Cardoons, artichokes and borage are used in preparing tasty vegetable stews and the rich green pastures support cattle breading that provide top quality meat used in sumptuous delicacies such as Cameros, a mix of chopped lamb grilled in dry shoots from the vineyards. Despite being located inland, fish is a major component of the menu here, particularly cod. Traditional grandma recipes are still very popular, being served coupled with patitas (potatoes), manitas (pig’s trotters), embuchados (stuffed meat), patorrillo (stew made with lamb innards), and snails. Desserts are never missed after a tasty meal: Soto, located in Cameros, is reputed for tasty marzipan delights and Arnedo’s fardalejos are a reminder of the Arabians times from the past. THE REGION

T

he Mediterranean Coast region encompasses the entire eastern coast of Spain from Andalucía in the south to its border with France in the north. A wide range of wines are produced here, from excellent Cava and fragrant whites to deeply coloured, earthy and dense reds. The Mediterranean Sea moderates the temperatures here, allowing for a more even climate year round. Priorat is one of the oldest winemaking regions that has enjoyed a modern reinvention. The high altitude terraced hillside slate vineyards are home to old vines of Garnacha and Cariñena, often blended with French varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The slate soil here is very unique, and looks like broken chunks of chalkboard strewn over the hillsides. Called ‘llicorella’, it is easy to see that harvesting and tending the vines can’t be an easy task. The same could be said of the work the vines themselves must do, their roots having to dig deep to find the water and nutrients they need to thrive. The region has a high reputation for quality wines of distinctive character, and some of Spain’s hottest young winemakers have found the recipe for quality at an affordable price. ► ► ► Click here for wine & Food experiences near Priorat

BEYOND WINE Priorat can take you back in time to the days when the Moors occupied these lands around Siurana. Here, you’’ll discover the legend of the Moorish Queen's Last Leap: Queen Abdelazia preferred to throw herself off the cliff with her white stallion rather than be taken by Christian troops. Mining in the Siurana river valley has also left a rich industrial heritage and the most important site can be found in the village of Bellmunt del Priorat where you can spend a day out at the underground levels of the Eugènia led mine, now a museum.

THE REGION

J

erez is located in southwestern Spain and belongs to Andalucía province where the vineyards have been planted for ages. Historically, this war-torn part of Iberia has been under Moorish and Islamic rule, which at times have forbidden winemaking and anything related to alcohol.

Over half the region is planted to Jerez (sherry) varieties of Palomino, Pedro Jimenez and Moscatel, grown on the rugged and limestone-rich desert terrain (the chalky white soil is called albariza), though the mountains offer the opportunity for more variety in winemaking style. Though there are some very good white table wines made here, the region is better known for its dessert-style wines. Like Port, sherry is a fortified wine, meaning that extra alcohol is added to bring its alcohol content up to around 16 percent volume. After the grapes are harvested in early September, they are crushed to make a still white wine that is aged for about two years before being put through the criadera and solera system. In this process, the sherries of different years are blended to ensure that the finished product is of consistent quality.

Few things can beat sherry as a pre-meal aperitif. Ever since Sir Francis Drake ransacked the port of Cádiz in 1587 and made off with 3,000 barrels of sherry, the British have been addicted to the sweet nectar, and have become its main international customers. Interestingly they favour the so called “cream” sherry, to which sugar or grape juice is added as a sweetener, while Spaniards prefer the bone-dry, crystal-clear fino. Note that sherry can only be produced in one place, the area lying between Jerez de la Frontera, Puerto de Santa María and San Lucar de Barrameda in the province of Cádiz, an area that holds more than 10,000 hectares of vineyards.
