REMEDIAL ARCHITECTURE

The challenge presented by EUROPAN 15 Spain takes place in a degraded industrial settlement in Oliva. Just in between the urban area and the agricultural landscape. Claiming for ideas to become productive again. Our approach is clear. We state that vulnerable spaces should be consider a integral part of green infrastructure under the territorial strategy of Valencian Community. As so, the steps to repopulate “El Rajolars” takes into account pre-existent structures as ruins, now part of the landscape. The intervention is based on reorganizing the existent elements always with the philosophy of “I would prefer not to” from Bartleby.

The research covered a theoretical approach to the main issue “Climate Change”. From the perspective of the impact of architecture. After a multiple scales analysis, cities result as the main subject to be addressed. Taking Caracas as example, the project approach went from the metropolitan scale. Where the main challenges and opportunities where a identify. Creating a plan to reuse the industrial settlements inside the city fabric trapped by its growth. These new green patches will act as filtering organs of the city, generating resources and absorbing waste. Furthermore, One of the industrial settlements was selected as an exemplary action including one recycling project for an obsolete building. Intensive mix complementary uses allows to keep buildings in motion most of the day, which reduce land use by taking more advantage of less square meters. The key is adaptation. The research was awarded with an outstanding mention and a recommended for publication with offers from the Venezuelan committee for the conservation of the industrial heritage (CVCPI).

REMEDIAL ARCHITECTURE the Research is extensive and includes a masterplan for the city and a local urban plan for the industrial settlement selected.

REMEDIAL ARCHITECTURE

It is the search of symbiotic coexistence with the ecosystem where it is located. It provides its context with self-regulation capabilities. Absorbing impact and reducing the load on the environment.

WATER COLLECTION PRODUCTION OF ENERGY The building has a installed capacity of Producing 2.565 MWh daily with the use of 668 solar panels. Equivalent to the average consumption of 610 inhabitants. Also, 216KWh daily from wind energy.

URBAN AGRICULTURE The sunniest façades of the building (North-west y south-east) are protected by a skin made for agriculture. It is made of 6840 trays that can host, for example 27.360 plants of black beans. Equivalent to 1,8 Ha land with an average production of 1,4 Tons of beans per year.

Besides reusing gray water for irrigation, it is collected on average 1.825.600 L of rain water per year.

STRUCTURE By using laminated wood and reusing an existing building, it is saved to the atmosphere around 9.5 million of kilograms of CO2. This would be released to the atmosphere by a similar building with concrete structure. This CO2 is equivalent to the pollution of driving 2974 time the earth diameter by car.

NATURAL VENTILATION The building is designed to control the inner environment automatically. All ventilation is 100% natural and passive (No air conditioner) except for the auditorium and basement. This saves 296.4 KW of energy.

A low budget progressive project which started with the renovation of a former stables. Located in the mountains of Serra Calderona national park. The principle was to keep the materials local. Also to adopt a functional mindset. The owners wanted a space where they were not worried about scratching or breaking things, so durability and simplicity were a must.

The owners also wanted to do must of the job by themselves. This is the main reason of its unfinished status. Nevertheless, this add the challenge of designing not just the architecture project, but also the electricity, data, water and sanitation. Moreover, the building project and the management of the construction budget and the works.

The context Bucolic pine forest in the interior of Serra Calderona national park, near to Valencia, Spain. The stables where build in the former sowing beds. Located in a isolated area surrounded by old agricultural landscape and Mediterranean forest.

The stables The former stables to be transformed into a house had two separate room oriented north, one for each horse. A living are with a kitchen and a small bathroom oriented south-west and a exterior cover terrace on the south-east.

The Project 70sm apartment separated into two main areas. Oriented north the night are with 2 rooms. At south the day are with the Livingroom and dinning. At the east side a functional strip with all the water services (kitchen and bathroom) supported by the east wall where the main water connection reach the house. The bathroom location responds to the norther location of the septic tank.

The psychology of Howard Roark is a synthesis of Rand thesis about “the virtue of selfishness” and “objectivist Epistemology” Roark is an Architect and marble worker which radical ideas about the integrity of his work drives him to take terrorist actions to protect his creations. We have taken this character and we have placed him in a contemporary context. Replacing his background as a marble worker with pottery. His house-Studio is the result of recycling an abandoned industrial brick furnace.

El Rajolar and the brick Furnaces It is decadent brick industry settlement in Oliva, Spain. It offers a variety of typologies of buildings where the most interesting is the furnace. Always paired with a chimney, the furnace is a mass of masonry, rocks and soil which hide a set of parallel vaults inside. In the life cycle of the industrial buildings these structures overpass the surrounding warehouses for their robustness. The nature of Furnaces is to preserve inner temperature. This is achieved by high thermic inertia of its materials. Making it a perfect building for Mediterranean weather. keeping it passively cool on summer and preserving the heat during winter.

Design of the studio-House The focus of this assignment was to design, on detail, one of the spaces of the house. In this particular case the Studio. We chose to keep the clay and bricks as the main material and use it in its different stages. Also the preexistence of collapses in the inner vault was exploited to create 3 courtyards, one of them used as bathroom for the public areas of the house. To consolidate the collapses, a concrete frame is used. To allow the light to enter inside the vaults, and, at the same time, to separate interior and exterior spaces the chosen material was glass bricks.

Hakadaday prize is a makers and inventors award based on a open source community. For this edition, several NGOs where invited to propose a challenge for the community. Each challenge would be a separate competition. We selected to work with FieldReady, an NGO which builds solutions in site for locals during and after natural disasters. The challenge proposed was to create an affordable open source UV flashlight to curate adhesives for industrial use.

Design challenge Create a shell for the electronics, capable of been easily printed and assemble. Moreover durable but also possible to disassemble and replace or fix its parts. The design is all joined by printable looks using compliant mechanisms. This allows to reduce the amount of pieces and to simplify the final product. Thus, all the pieces of the UVA match with each other by pressure or by rotation. No glue or screws are needed. The design also need it to be ergonomic and easy to operate.

Graphic design Evolution of the logo for the project. Part of the tasks related to design was the creation of an image for the brand. A revolution on asyncronous learning As an academy designer in the European Patent Office, my first task was to prepare a feedback for the first course taken by patent examiners. The results inspired me to propose a new project related to new ways of learning. Such non precedent project takes the learning and training experience to a virtual reality adventure game. A reality created for a future learning metaverse.
