CULTURAL C E N T E R MASTER DIPLOMA

DIPLOMA THESIS The city is growing and gradually expands its boundaries. An increasing number of new housing projects affected by the increase in the number of potential users of public space. Among these areas should be highlighted the shortage of space and sports facilities. Seeking the best location I found the area between the housing estate in Ludwinow District. I decided that this is the right place to create an alternative to the crowded Vistula Boulevards. At the same time, the proposed solution is a natural extension, the extension of these Boulevards and flood Zakrzowek. You should definitely mention the planned many years of investment in the area namely the relief channel, which is to protect against water a thousand years. The channel was already designed by the Austrians in the years 19041906 as part of the waterway Oder-Vistula-Drniestr, but World War I and the subsequent history of this part of Europe effectively stopped this investment. However, became a major task of this channel is to drain flood waters outside the very center of old Krakow. The channel is to be run from the mouth of the river Oriole to Pychowice its length will be about 4 km. The total width of the channel is to be 100m (not the water in the canal). The decision to build the channel has taken the mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski. Construction of the channel requires a place 4 bridges, construction cost is a few hundred million, the city will apply for EU funds for this purpose, if all goes well this 2015 Cracow uprising island. The construction of this channel will create excellent conditions for passenger shipping. The city is becoming more and more closer to the river (created new hotels on the Vistula River, is planned within the water tram transport) is an example of Cracow (if this channel formation) will encourage other cities to return to the river.

ROOFTOPS? Why not. I n t e r n a tional C o n t e s t a

Roofs are spaces on the way of desertification. Do the rooftops deserve any usage? This competition requires a functional and architectural consideration of any kind of roofs (flat roofs, sloped, gabled, rooftops... on towers, houses, blocks, urban centers ...)The management of the space, usage, program or other new possibilities, are the main factors. The main purpose of this contest is to cultivate proposals that offer an alternative on urban renovation, tapping into the observation and consideration for the life in Cracow from the prospective of youth. Much time is spent integrating everyone’s opinions in the current process, and the current method of urban renovation, though has beautified the city and offers better living space, it has also destroyed the possibility of preserving localized living experience. COLABORATION: Anna Ostrowska, Karol Ornatowski

N O W A H U T A A L L E Y OF ROSES

The most representative part of what was to be "the ideal socialist town". Its "main square". Sadly, despite great potential to become a focal space to visit (imposing social realist architecture and unique urban planning and history behind it) it is still kinda forgotten by the Mayor and City Council of Krakow. Still, full of people in summertime. Surprisingly, the site is more popular amongst foreigners (wanting to learn about unique model communist town) than locals (who still hold, quite understandably, bad as sociations with communism times). It probably just needs attention, investement, renovation and some funky ideas. COLABORATION: Anna Gulinska, Rafal Jaskowiec

Zakopane is a lovely town situated at the foothills of themajestic Tatra mountains. It has a population of 30,000 inhabitants. The unusual location of the town, hidden between a gentle range of Gubaluwka and the rocky Tatra summits was a decisive factor in its career as a tourism centre. As early as at the end of the 18th century Zakopane, a small and remote village located at the southern end of Poland, started to attract the first summer holidaymakers. The visitors arrived mainly from Cracow in horse carts, often carrying various domestic equipment, which they couldn't find in the modest highland peasant cottage. In 1889 Zakopane obtained the status of a health resort attracting patients suffering from tuberculosis. When, in 1898 the construction works on a railway track were finished, the first train from Cracow reached the town. This resulted in a rapid increase in the number of tourists from 1600 in 1898 to over 10,000 in 1900 (over 3 million at present).

The housing units share the urban and rural vision of the project . They have double orientation enabling cross ventilation and view. The houses are organized by means of a central core of bathrooms that divides them into day and night spaces. The daytime areas face the inner plaza and have large windows to profit from the valuable sunlight in Asturias, while the night areas, with more controlled openings and equipped with blinds, face the city. The housing units were generated adding up consecutive 2.60 meters modules , providing one, two, three and four bedroom units, thereby responding to the multiple types of apartments required. The terrace, one meter deep, is presented as a visual and spatial extension of the apartment. It is intended to serve as an exterior gallery made of wooden planks bordering the entire inner perimeter of the building.

This construction on the platform resembles a large table with ten legs. Three areas are created within it, divided by two white boxes that do not reach the ceiling, containing the stairs and service spaces. The central space is the living area, and the dining room has a large white table. On one side, closer to the swimming pool, is the kitchen, and on the other side

The house is situated in Burow, a village that lies in vicinity of Krakow, Poland. The site is placed on a south slope that is gently descending towards a valley, one of the characteristic features of the regional landscape.

M U R A L S S T R E E T ART

Murals are not like other paintings. They have a different purpose, a different kind of effect on the lives of those who see them. They are public art in the best sense, because they are actually created in public, with the community looking on.
